Interpolation Problems And The Characterization Of The Hilbert Function, Bryant Xie Jul 2023

Interpolation Problems And The Characterization Of The Hilbert Function, Bryant Xie

Mathematical Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses

In mathematics, it is often useful to approximate the values of functions that are either too awkward and difficult to evaluate or not readily differentiable or integrable. To approximate its values, we attempt to replace such functions with more well-behaving examples such as polynomials or trigonometric functions. Over the algebraically closed field C, a polynomial passing through r distinct points with multiplicities m1, ..., mr on the affine complex line in one variable is determined by its zeros and the vanishing conditions up to its mi − 1 derivative for each point. A natural question would then be to consider …

Creating Inclusive Classrooms With Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy, Melissa Kane Jul 2023

Creating Inclusive Classrooms With Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy, Melissa Kane

Doctor of Education in Secondary and Middle Grades Education Dissertations

This is a qualitative phenomenographic study that uses the theoretical frameworks of Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy (CSP) (Paris, 2012), Intergroup Contact Theory (Allport 1954), and Social Constructivism (Smagorinsky, 2007) to evaluate how 7th grade students at a Title I middle school in the Southeastern United States experience the phenomenon of peer relationships in the context of a CSP writing unit. Students created, peer edited, and shared multimodal “Where I’m From” (Lyon, n.d.) poems in intentionally created groups. The researcher collected data via participant interviews, participant journals, and a researcher reflection journal. Findings indicated that students developed a better understanding of …

2023 Resident Scholar Fellowship: Hsuantsen, Hsuan Tsen

Marian Fellowships and Other Sponsored Research in the Marian Library

Hsuan Tsen, a senior lecturer in the Department of Art and Design at the University of Dayton, received the 2023 Resident Scholar Fellowship in the Marian Library to continue research on visual exchanges between Japan and America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Tsen’s research explores the work artist John La Farge produced in the wake of a trip to Japan in 1886.

La Farge was successful in his day, Tsen says, but his works are relatively unknown today.

“Some of those are stained glass, which really requires one to see them in person to appreciate their full …

Speed And Terrain Impact Ground Reaction Forces During Load Carriage, Abigail C. Aultz, Eric Francis, Tyler N. Brown Jul 2023

Speed And Terrain Impact Ground Reaction Forces During Load Carriage, Abigail C. Aultz, Eric Francis, Tyler N. Brown

Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research

Load carriage leads to larger, faster vertical ground reaction forces (GRFs), and greater risk of musculoskeletal injury. Although increased lower limb flexion can help dissipate the vertical GRF, reducing injury risk, it is unclear if terrain affects limb flexion and vertical GRFs during load carriage. This study quantified lower limb biomechanics as participants walked, jogged and ran with heavy body borne load over different terrain. We hypothesize that participants will decrease lower limb flexion, but increase peak vertical GRFs as speed increases, but these changes will vary with terrain. Each participant walked (1.3 m/s), jogged (3.0 m/s) and ran (4.5 …

Ink Formulation For Sij In Extreme Environments, Jose Policarpio, Kiyo Fujimoto, Josh Eixenberger, David Estrada Jul 2023

Ink Formulation For Sij In Extreme Environments, Jose Policarpio, Kiyo Fujimoto, Josh Eixenberger, David Estrada

Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research

Conductive and bio-friendly gold nanomaterial inks are highly desirable for printed consumer electronics, energy, and healthcare. With Ag (silver) being the most commercially available ink for the Super Ink Jet Printer, expanding the library of available inks for SIJ is important. With Au (gold) being one of them. The gold is synthesized using sodium tetrachloroaurate as the gold precursor and reduced to metal gold nanoparticles by dropwise addition of sodium borohydride. After synthesis, the solvent is replaced with pure water and the gold nanoparticles are concentrated to formulate a printable ink. The synthesized gold ink met the technical requirements of …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Zn0.85Ni0.15O(Ca)X Nanoparticles With Varying Amounts Of Cinnamic Acid, Stephanie Amezcua-Hernandez, Emmaline Ellison, Clayton Kincheloe, Jerry D. Harris

Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research

Antibiotics are important in medicine and are well-known as life-saving drugs. However, bacteria are becoming increasingly resistant to traditional antibiotics. One new class of potential antibacterial agents is metal oxides, such as zinc oxide. This project focuses on synthesizing and characterizing nickel-doped zinc oxide nanoparticles prepared with varying amounts of cinnamic acid (CA). When the Zn0.85Ni0.15O(CA)x nanoparticles are capped with cinnamic acid, preliminary results have shown an increase in the antibacterial properties of the particles. The Zn0.85Ni0.15O(CA)x nanoparticles in this experiment were prepared by alkali precipitation from methanol solutions at …

Additive Manufacturing For The Rapid Prototyping Of Economical Biosensors, Alejandra Almaraz, Fereshteh Rajabi-Kouchi, Hailey M. Burgoyne, Naqsh E. Mansoor, Jessica Koehne, David Estrada

Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research

Current methods of developing wearable electronics through reductive manufacturing pose a substantial ecological footprint. To address this issue, it is imperative to investigate alternative additive manufacturing techniques. Aerosol jet printing (AJP) is a promising approach that relies on the optimization of gas flow rates and ink rheology to produce high-resolution printed structures. Implementing a low-intensity layered delamination approach to synthesize titanium carbide MXene, and further produce MXene ink, reduces environmental impact while enhancing the device performance. MXene ink yields desirable rheology, including viscosity, surface tension, density, and contact angles compatible with AJP technique. In terms of cost, ecological effect, time, …

Palestini In Peter Comestor’S Historia Scholastica, Mandee Snowden-Edmonds, Nicholas Canfield, Krystian Fichat, Karen Wadley

Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research

As participants in the Historia Scholastica Project, our obligation for the 2022-2023 academic year is the advancement of the transcription, translation and contextualization of Idaho’s oldest publicly accessible book, Peter Comestor’s Historia Scholastica. Boise State University’s manuscript was printed in the mid-late 1470s, 300 years after its original composition. Because of its wide popularity, Historia Scholastica was copied multiple times in various vernaculars and served as a biblical commentary, placing the world and events of humanity in relation to the events of the old and new testaments, from Genesis to Revelation. In order to accomplish this, Comestor utilized a …

The Folk Influences On The Piano Works Of Manuel M. Ponce, Alexandro Aguilar, Roger Mcvey Jul 2023

The Folk Influences On The Piano Works Of Manuel M. Ponce, Alexandro Aguilar, Roger Mcvey

Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research

The compositions of musicians from underrepresented backgrounds has gone largely overlooked in the core literature for piano and in academic fields such as musicology and theoretical analysis. The music of Mexican composers such as Manuel Maria Ponce, deserves to be in the standard repertoire of classical piano as his artistic merit could be compared to that of other European composers such as Johannes Brahms or Claude Debussy. Inadvertently, the field of music has missed out on rich cultural inspiration. It is important to highlight music from people of color and help expand the scope of music as a studied form …

Impact Of Knee Injury And Disease On Frontal Plane Knee Biomechanics During Walk On Uneven Surfaces, Mason D. Shaffer, Nicholas L. Hunt, Matthew V. Robinett, Tyler N. Brown Jul 2023

Impact Of Knee Injury And Disease On Frontal Plane Knee Biomechanics During Walk On Uneven Surfaces, Mason D. Shaffer, Nicholas L. Hunt, Matthew V. Robinett, Tyler N. Brown

Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research

Frontal plane knee biomechanics, in particular speed and magnitude of knee adduction motion, are implicated in knee osteoarthritis development. Although individuals are between 50% to 90% more likely to develop knee osteoarthritis after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACL-R), it is unknown if ACL-R individuals exhibit knee adduction biomechanics related to OA development. This study sought to quantify speed and magnitude of knee adduction for knee OA and ACL-R individuals. We hypothesize that OA will exhibit larger, faster knee adduction biomechanics than ACL-R, which will increase at great walk speed and over a challenging surface. Six individuals with ACL-R and 8 …

Coarse-Graining Of Anisotropic Molecules For Energy Materials Simulations, Noah Montrose, Eridani Rojas, Rainier Barrett, Eric Jankowski Jul 2023

Coarse-Graining Of Anisotropic Molecules For Energy Materials Simulations, Noah Montrose, Eridani Rojas, Rainier Barrett, Eric Jankowski

Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research

Coarse-graining--simplifying models of molecules by representing a collection of atoms with a simulation element like a sphere or ellipsoid--can significantly increase the timescales accessible to simulations without loss of structural accuracy. Spherical simulation elements are inaccurate representations of flat molecular structures, though, which are better represented with anisotropic shapes like ellipsoids. In this work we debug and extend open source software (GRiTS) for calculating the shapes and orientations of an ellipsoid representing a collection of atoms. These functionalities are useful for both validating the correctness of coarse-grained models and for training advanced anisotropic potentials that can be used in accelerated …

No Fire On The Mountain: Has Fire Suppression Caused Population Declines Of An Imperiled Ground Squirrel?, Alyssa Livingston, Courtney Conway, Eva Strand Jul 2023

No Fire On The Mountain: Has Fire Suppression Caused Population Declines Of An Imperiled Ground Squirrel?, Alyssa Livingston, Courtney Conway, Eva Strand

Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research

The Northern Idaho Ground Squirrel (Urocitellus brunneus) is listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. A prevailing hypothesis suggests that one reason for the species decline is encroachment of trees into its habitat due to fire suppression. However, this hypothesis has not been rigorously tested. Using geographic information systems and aerial imaging, I compared changes in abundance of the squirrels' populations to changes in forest canopy coverage over the past 40 years. These comparisons allowed me to test the prevailing hypothesis for the population declines of this rare species by testing the prediction that forest fire suppression …

Lipid Order In Red Blood Cell Membranes Exposed To Hypo-Osmotic Stress And Self-Inserting Pore-Forming Proteins, Aviana R. Smith, Rosey Whiting, Maryna Kucheriava, Jacob Kammer, Zhiyu Li, Daniel Fologea Jul 2023

Lipid Order In Red Blood Cell Membranes Exposed To Hypo-Osmotic Stress And Self-Inserting Pore-Forming Proteins, Aviana R. Smith, Rosey Whiting, Maryna Kucheriava, Jacob Kammer, Zhiyu Li, Daniel Fologea

Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research

The packing of lipids comprising a cell membrane, known as lipid order, has been under increasing scrutiny due to continuous findings of its biological significance. There is extensive literature detailing the changes in lipid order, and multiple temperature-induced phase transitions have been clarified. However, these experiments have not considered common external factors, such as hypo-osmotic stress and protein insertion. To fill these gaps in our knowledge, Red Blood Cell (RBC) membranes stained with membrane probes were investigated by general polarization (GP) and anisotropy (p). We evaluated RBC membranes under hypo-osmotic shock, and membranes with pore-forming toxins. Significant changes in lipid …

Automatic Tool Changing Mechanism For Industrial Robotics Arms, Carlos Rivas, Taher Deemyad Jul 2023

Automatic Tool Changing Mechanism For Industrial Robotics Arms, Carlos Rivas, Taher Deemyad

Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research

The goal of this project was to Develop a tool-changing mechanism for industrial robotic applications that could significantly undercut the cost of fabrication compared to what is currently available for the industrial market. The vast majority of tool-changing mechanisms currently available operate using pneumatics which requires the use of machining and tight tolerances to operate properly. In order to reduce fabrication costs for the tool changer developed in this project a linkage mechanism was developed that could be 3D printed.

In the 7 weeks’ time provided to work on the project the mechanical and electric components of the system were …

Developing High Entropy Alloys For Nuclear Applications, Mkari Mcdougall, Ching-Heng Shiau, Asa Monson, Brian Jaques

Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research

High entropy alloys (HEAs) were developed for their desirability of strength, hardness, and corrosion, wear, and radiation resistance. This makes them ideal for nuclear applications in advanced reactors. High entropy alloys are characterized as alloys containing at least 5 principal elements, each with an atomic percentage between 5 and 35% [1]. A process for fabrication and characterization of these alloys entails ball milling and spark plasma sintering (SPS), then characterization tools such as x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Variability In Consumption And End Uses Of Water For Residential Users, Camilo J. Bastidas Pacheco, Jeffery S. Horsburg, Attallah A. Nour Jul 2023

Variability In Consumption And End Uses Of Water For Residential Users, Camilo J. Bastidas Pacheco, Jeffery S. Horsburg, Attallah A. Nour

Outreach

Research Objective/Summary: In most large urban water systems in the US, the residential sector consumes the majority of total supplied fresh water. In a world plagued with increasing water scarcity and climate change stresses, understanding individual home water end-uses is vital to water management and conservation. We studied the end uses of water in residential homes, both indoor and outdoor to find patterns and variations in consumption over time. Results indicate a need for more efficient water fixtures, particularly toilets, and provide an opportunity to promote conservation behavior.

An Open-Source, Semisupervised Water End-Use Disaggregation And Classification Tool, Nour A. Attallah, Jeffery S. Horsburgh, Camilo J. Bastidas Pacheco Jul 2023

An Open-Source, Semisupervised Water End-Use Disaggregation And Classification Tool, Nour A. Attallah, Jeffery S. Horsburgh, Camilo J. Bastidas Pacheco

Outreach

Research Objective/Summary: Research on individual household water consumption is vital to water management and conservation approaches. Despite a significant number of papers published on end-use disaggregation tools, reproduction and further study of results on water-use behavior is difficult because the data and code are not easily accessible. In order to fulfill this need for open and reproducible tools, we present a new, semisupervised, non-intrusive water end-use disaggregation and classification tool.

Rheumatology Articles

Zoledronic acid is a bisphosphonate commonly used to treat various conditions involving bone loss. While it is generally well-tolerated, the occurrence of severe inflammatory reactions is rare. We present the case of an 82-year-old female who developed a severe immune reaction, including weakness and tenderness in her upper and lower extremities, following a single dose of zoledronic acid infusion for the treatment of osteoporosis. The onset of symptoms occurred one week after the infusion and persisted, progressively worsening over time, leading to functional impairment and the need for a walker for ambulation. Laboratory studies revealed an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate …

The Life Story Rights Puzzle, Jorge L. Contreras, Dave Fagundes Jul 2023

The Life Story Rights Puzzle, Jorge L. Contreras, Dave Fagundes

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

The life story deal is a staple of Hollywood entertainment law practice. Studios seeking to make a docudrama (a feature based on real life facts but including dramatized elements) often do so only after securing life story rights from the subject of the production. Yet “life story rights” are a fiction. No source of law vests exclusive rights in the facts that comprise the narratives of our lives. Despite popular misconceptions, neither copyright, trademark, privacy, nor the right of publicity give individuals the exclusive right to exploit facts concerning their lives. On the contrary: in the United States, First Amendment …
