Low Latency And Energy-Efficient Hotword Detection Based On Mouth Movement, D Shin Jul 2023

Low Latency And Energy-Efficient Hotword Detection Based On Mouth Movement, D Shin

Defensive Publications Series

Devices that provide virtual assistants that respond to spoken queries monitor the user’s speech to detect a hotword to trigger the virtual assistant application. However, hotword detection requires some components of the device to be always on which make such devices power hungry. Always-on microphones are a problem especially for small devices such as hearables that have a small battery. This disclosure describes techniques that gate hotword detection with a lightweight neural network that estimates mouth motion signatures using signals from a low-power, always-on inertial measurement unit (IMU). Because the IMU has lower bandwidth than microphones, signals generated by the …

Use Of Data From Physiological Sensors For Automatic Labeling Of User Sentiment, N/A Jul 2023

Use Of Data From Physiological Sensors For Automatic Labeling Of User Sentiment, N/A

Defensive Publications Series

Mobile devices and wearable computers can detect a variety of events to automatically trigger actions. However, it is hard to determine the level of user satisfaction with such automatically triggered actions. This disclosure describes techniques, implemented with user permission, to determine a user’s reaction to automatically triggered actions. Upon the execution of an automatically triggered action, sensors on a wearable device are utilized to measure physiological parameters such as changes in heart rate, blood oxygen concentration, blood pressure, etc., and/or mechanical movements. Physiological and movement data are used to automatically generate ground-truth labels for a triggered action based on the …

Determinants And Predictors Of Smoking-Related Weight Concern In Smokers Participating In A Community-Based Cessation Program, Cheri Kilmurray Jul 2023

Determinants And Predictors Of Smoking-Related Weight Concern In Smokers Participating In A Community-Based Cessation Program, Cheri Kilmurray

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Background: Concern about weight gain is a barrier to smoking cessation, but determinants of post-cessation weight concern have not been adequately evaluated in the context of community-based cessation programs. Methods: Baseline data were analyzed from a cessation trial of 392 adults randomized to physical activity (PA) or general wellness counseling as adjunctive treatment for cigarette smoking. Outcomes were 1) Use of smoking to control weight (“control”) and 2) Willingness to tolerate weight gain without returning to smoking (“intolerance”) using validated instruments. Independent variables were self-reported PA and perceptions, socio-demographics, psycho-social measures, smoking behavior and perceptions, diet, and body mass index …

Development Of A Covid-19 Vulnerability Index (Cvi) For The Counties And Residents Of New Jersey, Usa., Remo Disalvatore, Sarah K Bauer, Jeong Eun Ahn, Kauser Jahan

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

The coronavirus disease 2019, or COVID-19, has impacted countless aspects of everyday life since it was declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organization in March of 2020. From societal to economic impacts, COVID-19 and its variants will leave a lasting impact on our society and the world. During the height of the pandemic, it became increasingly evident that indices, such as the Center for Disease Control's (CDC) Social Vulnerability Index (SVI), were instrumental in predicting vulnerabilities within a community. The CDC's SVI provides important estimates on which communities will be more susceptible to 'hazard events' by compiling a …

Study On The Self-Repairing Effect Of Nanoclay In Powder Coatings For Corrosion Protection, Marshall S. Yang, Jinbao Huang, Hui Zhhang, James Noel, Yolanda S. Hedberg, Jian Chen, Ubong Eduok, Ivan Barker, Jeffrey D. Henderson, Chengqian Xian, Haiping Zhang, Jesse Zhu

Chemistry Publications

Powder coatings are a promising, solvent-free alternative to traditional liquid coatings due to the superior corrosion protection they provide. This study investigates the effects of incorporating montmorillonite-based nanoclay additives with different particle sizes into polyester/triglycidyl isocyanurate (polyester/TGIC) powder coatings. The objective is to enhance the corrosion-protective function of the coatings while addressing the limitations of commonly employed epoxy-based coating systems that exhibit inferior UV resistance. The anti-corrosive and surface qualities of the coatings were evaluated via neutral salt spray tests, electrochemical measurements, and surface analytical techniques. Results show that the nanoclay with a larger particle size of 18.38 µm (D50, …

Dataset For: A Coupled Lagrangian-Earth System Model For Predicting Oil Photooxidation, Claire B. Paris, Ana C. Vaz, Robin Faillettaz Jul 2023

Dataset For: A Coupled Lagrangian-Earth System Model For Predicting Oil Photooxidation, Claire B. Paris, Ana C. Vaz, Robin Faillettaz

C-IMAGE data

The explosion of the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil drilling rig on April 20 of 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico resulted in an uncontrolled oil spill from 5000 feet below the sea surface, requiring an extraordinarily rapid response. A decade ago, the technology to model oil spills from the deep ocean did not exist. A few oil models are now capable of forecasting the 3D transport and fate of the oil from such blowout. An important limitation in estimating the fate of the oil is, still today, the lack of spatially explicit photooxidation model parameterization. Weathering of oil near the …

Tragic Fate And History In Thomas Hardy's "The Return Of The Native", Tristan Pageze Jul 2023

Tragic Fate And History In Thomas Hardy's "The Return Of The Native", Tristan Pageze

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

This thesis explores the operation of the tragic in Thomas Hardy’s The Return of the Native by taking as a starting point the formalist approach to the genre of tragedy, before extending its definition to encompass the key concept of tragic conflict. This thesis argues that Hardy’s tragic vision takes for object human history, and especially the effects of new, unveiled knowledge on the human psyche, thus locating the root cause of tragedy in these contingencies. This continuum between individual action and the larger historical causes that shape it is expressed via the narrator’s discourse, and the discrepancy between his …

INTRODUCTION: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by communication difficulty and social deficits. The current treatment employs the use of psychosocial therapy and medication as well as alternative treatments. This is a pilot study that assessed whether participation in judo improved behavior and social skills in children with ASD.

METHODS: Twenty-four students from the Riverside Youth Judo Club were included in the study, after obtaining consent from their parents to participate. Inclusion criteria included participation in judo classes for more than one month and diagnosis of ASD and/or a developmental disability. Parent(s) of the children signed a …

How Do Pedestrians Perceive The Safety, Comfort, And Usefulness Of A Walking Space? An Exploratory Study Of Pedestrian Perception, Amanda Rifqa Marisa, Achmad Hery Fuad Jul 2023

How Do Pedestrians Perceive The Safety, Comfort, And Usefulness Of A Walking Space? An Exploratory Study Of Pedestrian Perception, Amanda Rifqa Marisa, Achmad Hery Fuad

Smart City

Car-oriented development has brought several negative impacts on human quality of life. Therefore, it is necessary to pay more attention to walkability as one of the essential aspects of it, especially in the urban area. In the meantime, most research on walking and walkability still overlooks the role of the pedestrian's perspective in examining walkability. Hence, this research tries to fill the gap in walkability research by exploring the pedestrian perspectives on the safety, comfort, and usefulness of walking space as the three overlapping aspects between walkability and walking needs. This research took context in Suryakencana, Bogor City, Indonesia. To …

Implementation Of An Efficient Bayesian Search For Gravitational-Wave Bursts With Memory In Pulsar Timing Array Data, Jerry Sun, Paul T. Baker, Aaron D. Johnson, Dustin R. Madison, Xavier Siemens

Pacific Faculty Work

The standard Bayesian technique for searching pulsar timing data for gravitational-wave bursts with memory (BWMs) using Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling is very computationally expensive to perform. In this paper, we explain the implementation of an efficient Bayesian technique for searching for BWMs. This technique makes use of the fact that the signal model for Earth-term BWMs (BWMs passing over the Earth) is fully factorizable. We estimate that this implementation reduces the computational complexity by a factor of 100. We also demonstrate that this technique gives upper limits consistent with published results using the standard Bayesian technique, and may …

Interpreting The Administrative Procedure Act: A Literature Review, Christopher J. Walker, Scott Macguidwin Jul 2023

Interpreting The Administrative Procedure Act: A Literature Review, Christopher J. Walker, Scott Macguidwin

Law & Economics Working Papers

The modern administrative state has changed substantially since Congress enacted the Administrative Procedure Act (APA) in 1946. Yet Congress has done little to modernize the APA in those intervening seventy-seven years. That does not mean the APA has remained unchanged. Federal courts have substantially refashioned the APA’s requirements for administrative procedure and judicial review of agency action. Perhaps unsurprisingly, calls to return to either the statutory text or the original meaning (or both) have intensified in recent years. “APA originalism” projects abound.

As part of the Notre Dame Law Review’s Symposium on the History of the Ad- ministrative Procedure Act …
