Open Pedagogy In Practice: Using Shareable Consultation Worksheets To Promote Equitable Research Learning, Stephanie E. Ard
Open Pedagogy In Practice: Using Shareable Consultation Worksheets To Promote Equitable Research Learning, Stephanie E. Ard
All Things Open
One-on-one library research consultations provide valuable support, but it can be challenging for students to recall everything discussed once the meeting is over. To help students continue building their skills after a session, I created a shared, editable online worksheet that captures search strategies, keywords, potential resources, and next steps in one document. Students retain access to their worksheets in Microsoft OneDrive and can choose to share them with peers, allowing the documents to function as open, reusable learning tools that support transparency, student agency, and ongoing engagement, particularly for those who may not be able to return for a …

Jumping Into The Deep End: Lessons Learned From Editing A Book About Open Movements, Abbey K. Elder, Bryan T. Ricupero, Shannon M. Smith
All Things Open
In 2023, we had a great idea: let’s make an open access book about open movements! Little did we know, this experience would change us all as we learned and grew alongside the authors who contributed to our volume, Open Movements: Recognizing Challenges and Building Connections.
Open Movements is about a lot of things: it’s about the institutional initiatives that support open scholarship, the vendors and programs that connect practitioners to the ideals of openness, and the barriers we run into when we try to communicate all that “Open” can be. Despite coming from separate institutions with backgrounds spanning …

Systems for contextual text analysis can provide results based on a user's selection but may lack transparency in their reasoning. This can be a challenge when a system misinterprets the semantic context of an ambiguous word or phrase. A described technique can address this by using a machine learning model to analyze a user's initial text selection along with its surrounding text. The model can predict an expanded, semantically coherent conceptual unit that may represent a user's likely intent. This system-generated expansion can be displayed to the user, for example, through a multi-tiered visual rendering that distinguishes it from the …

In online payment systems, even retryable transaction failures, such as an incorrect personal identification number entry, result in a failure on the payment app, requiring the user to restart the payment journey from the merchant checkout surface and contributing to transaction drop-off rates. A deferred notification strategy can be used to manage these failures. For example, upon a retryable failure, a user's payment application can signal the retryable nature of the error to the payment aggregator. The aggregator may then withhold the failure notification from the merchant for a configured time window. This approach provides the user an in-application opportunity …
Dynamic Reward Synthesis Via Contextually Weighted Objective Attribute Raters, Agoston Weisz, Roman Goldenberg, Evgeny Sluzhaev
Dynamic Reward Synthesis Via Contextually Weighted Objective Attribute Raters, Agoston Weisz, Roman Goldenberg, Evgeny Sluzhaev
Defensive Publications Series
Reinforcement learning for fine-tuning generative models can be negatively impacted by noisy reward signals from single-score automated evaluation systems, which may lead to training instability and unpredictable model improvements. A framework for dynamic reward synthesis addresses this by decomposing high-level concepts into discrete, objective attributes. By evaluating these attributes individually and weighting them based on the context of the input, the system produces a reward signal that is more stable, interpretable, and aligned with specific goals.
Predictive Computational Arbitrage And Dynamic Resource Allocation In Heterogeneous Networks, Aura Yavary
Predictive Computational Arbitrage And Dynamic Resource Allocation In Heterogeneous Networks, Aura Yavary
Defensive Publications Series
A system and method for dynamic allocation of computing resources across local and remote environments based on task complexity and resource availability are described. The approach involves evaluating an input using a probe model to determine a difficulty score and complexity tags. Based on this evaluation, the system isolates the input into individual semantic shards for processing across a heterogeneous network of computational targets. A compute bill of materials is generated to optimize cost and quality, matching specific shards with appropriate models, quantization precision levels, energy limits, and hardware targets. The architecture includes a semantic atomizer for parsing inputs, a …

Data Distillation Pipeline For Principle-Guided Personalization In Large Language Models, Hugo Lopes, Yang Zheng, Mugurel-Ionut Andreica, Jeffrey Dudek, Cheng Li
Data Distillation Pipeline For Principle-Guided Personalization In Large Language Models, Hugo Lopes, Yang Zheng, Mugurel-Ionut Andreica, Jeffrey Dudek, Cheng Li
Defensive Publications Series
Personalized large language models often exhibit defects such as the overuse of irrelevant user information, unnatural data formatting, and intrusive or repetitive name usage. These issues typically arise from a failure to prioritize relevant context or to integrate user data naturally into responses. A data distillation pipeline is disclosed to address these limitations by generating high-quality supervised fine-tuning examples. The method utilizes a “persona bank” to generate user prompts and profiles, followed by the generation of multiple responses guided by specific personalization principles. These guided responses are evaluated alongside a baseline unguided output using a side-by-side comparison. Training data is …
Harmonic Vector Equilibrium: A Unified Integer-Based Framework For Control, Navigation, And Communication On The Cuboctahedral Matrix, Olexandr Lozovyi
Harmonic Vector Equilibrium: A Unified Integer-Based Framework For Control, Navigation, And Communication On The Cuboctahedral Matrix, Olexandr Lozovyi
Defensive Publications Series
This disclosure presents an integer-based spatial and phase control framework (HVE) designed for embedded systems and actuators. The method replaces conventional floating-point arithmetic and 360-degree metrics with a base resolution of L = 27720. This metric, being the Least Common Multiple (LCM) of integers 1 through 12, guarantees exact integer division for complex mechanical gear ratios and spatial subdivisions.
The framework eliminates progressive floating-point phase drift and provides a computationally lightweight, pure-integer control law suitable for resource-constrained microcontrollers. The mathematical principle is inherently scalable to higher-precision systems (32/64-bit) for cross-disciplinary applications, including Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) spatial encoding, non-invasive neuromodulation …
Thermally Stable Multilayer Coating With A Diffusion Barrier For Interference Colors, Marco Zhou, Damon Guo
Thermally Stable Multilayer Coating With A Diffusion Barrier For Interference Colors, Marco Zhou, Damon Guo
Defensive Publications Series
Multilayer coatings used to create decorative interference colors may experience color degradation when thermally reactive metallic layers, such as copper and aluminum, are subjected to high-temperature manufacturing processes. This can cause atomic diffusion and the formation of intermetallic compounds that may alter the optical properties of the stack. To mitigate this, a separating layer, for example a thin film of niobium, can be incorporated between the reactive metallic layers during fabrication. This separating layer can function as a diffusion barrier to obstruct atomic migration at elevated temperatures. By inhibiting the formation of intermetallic compounds, the barrier layer may help preserve …
