School of Medicine Publications

Background: Tuberculosis (TB)-diabetes is a growing public health threat in TB-endemic settings. We aimed to determine diabetes prevalence among TB patients in Greater Accra and its association with TB clinical presentation and treatment outcomes.

Methods: We enrolled 204 adults (≥20 years) with bacteriologically confirmed pulmonary TB across 14 health facilities. At treatment initiation, participants were screened for diabetes using self-report, fasting plasma glucose, and glycated hemoglobin, following standard diagnostic criteria. Baseline characteristics were recorded, and participants were followed to determine TB treatment outcomes. Associations between diabetes, baseline characteristics and treatment outcomes were assessed using bivariate and multivariate analysis in STATA. …

Audio Based Intelligence For Smart Autonomous Vehicles Using Deep Reinforcement Learning, Sweekruthi Balivada, Mansi Sanjaybhai Tanna, Meera Alpesh Dhedia, Jane Wu, Jerry Gao Apr 2026

Audio Based Intelligence For Smart Autonomous Vehicles Using Deep Reinforcement Learning, Sweekruthi Balivada, Mansi Sanjaybhai Tanna, Meera Alpesh Dhedia, Jane Wu, Jerry Gao

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Efficient Advancements in intelligent transportation systems increasingly demand multimodal sensing frameworks capable of operating reliably under noisy, unpredictable real-world conditions. This research presents a Smart Car Audio Intelligence framework that leverages Machine Learn- ing (ML) and Reinforcement Learning (RL) to enhance real-time vehicle perception, safety, and situational awareness. Unlike traditional single-modality or static audio models, our approach integrates four specialized submodules - Emergency, Alert, Environmental/Human sounds, and Accident detection models which are each optimized through a combination of Transformer, CLAP, and CRNN architectures, augmented with adaptive RL agents. The ML models achieved strong baseline performance across all categories, with up …

Preparation And Characterization Of Double-Network Composite Hydrogels With Carboxymethyl Pachymaran In Promoting Wound Healing, Haodong Wu, Xi Feng, Zhinan Mei, Wen Huang, Ying Liu

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Utilizing food-derived bioactive polysaccharides in advanced biomedical applications offers significant potential. To effectively harness the inherent bioactivity of Poria cocos, a renowned edible and medicinal fungus, we developed a multifunctional double-network composite hydrogel (CPS) via a feasible one-pot strategy. This was achieved by incorporating functional carboxymethyl pachymaran (CMP) into a matrix of food-grade sodium alginate (SA) and polyacrylamide (PAM). This formulation endows the hydrogel with excellent extensibility, rapid self-healing capabilities, and strong tissue adhesion, all while preserving the biological activity of the natural macromolecules. In a mouse full-thickness skin defect model, the CPS significantly accelerated wound recovery, achieving a healing …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Respiratory tract infections remain a major cause of global morbidity, highlighting the need for rapid and accurate diagnostic testing. This multicenter study evaluated the clinical and analytical performance of the updated NxTAG Respiratory Pathogen Panel v2 (RPPv2), a high-throughput multiplex molecular assay designed to detect 21 viral and bacterial respiratory pathogens. A total of 2,145 nasopharyngeal swab specimens, including both prospectively enrolled and archived specimens, were analyzed across five U.S. clinical sites. The NxTAG RPPv2 was assessed against FDA-cleared molecular assays and bi-directional sequencing, with contrived specimens used to supplement low-prevalence targets. Valid results were obtained for 99.7% of specimens …

The Necessity Of Adaptive Sports: Addressing Financial Barriers To Participation In Children With Spinal Cord Injuries, Megan G. Wells, Lesley Khan-Farooqi Apr 2026

The Necessity Of Adaptive Sports: Addressing Financial Barriers To Participation In Children With Spinal Cord Injuries, Megan G. Wells, Lesley Khan-Farooqi

Spring 2026 OTD Capstone Symposium

Children with spinal cord injuries (SCI) face significant financial barriers that limit access to adaptive sports, despite the physical and psychosocial benefits of participation. This capstone project aimed to address this gap by developing a comprehensive financial resource guide for families. Guided by the Person-Environment-Occupation-Performance (PEOP) model, a needs assessment was conducted through semi-structured interviews, clinical observations, and stakeholder input, revealing a lack of accessible and centralized funding information. In response, a guidebook was created that includes educational content, local and national funding opportunities, and practical tools for navigating financial aid and grant applications. The guide was piloted and refined …
