Investigating The Role Of The Fascia In The Development Of Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (Fop), Liv Nevo
Honors Scholar Theses
Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a rare genetic disorder that primarily affects connective and muscle tissues. It is characterized by heterotopic ossification (HO), which is the formation of bone tissue where it does not normally form. HO can be triggered by physical trauma, infection, inflammation, or stress. The formation of HO leads to impaired muscle function and reduced patient quality of life. Concurrently, the loss of muscle function indicates there is an impairment in the ability of the muscle to regenerate effectively. The most common genetic cause of FOP is an arginine-to-histidine substitution within the type I bone morphogenic protein …

A Comparative Analysis Of Two Play-Based Upper Extremity Training Programs In Improving Arm Motor Function In Children With Hemiplegia, Kara Borkowski
Honors Scholar Theses
Cerebral Palsy is one of the most common causes of childhood motor disability. Children with cerebral palsy often experience impaired movement, posture, and balance (Vitrikas et al., 2020). A key factor in the success of upper extremity training for children with cerebral palsy is the frequency and intensity of therapy sessions (Jackman et al., 2020). However, these sessions can be expensive, time consuming, and often difficult to fit into home routines. These limitations have led to an increasing exploration of the effects of caregiver-led programs, bridging many of the gaps these barriers create. The efficacy of a play-based training program …

Exploring Stem Cell-Based Approaches To Ameloblast-Like Cell Development: Progress And Limitations In Enamel Formation, Ava L. Abruzzese
Honors Scholar Theses
Enamel is one of the most critical structural components of the tooth. As the outermost layer, it serves as a protective barrier, shielding the underlying dentin and dental pulp from physical trauma and mechanical forces. The formation and mineralization of enamel are regulated by specialized cells known as ameloblasts. Once enamel maturation is complete, these cells undergo apoptosis. Consequently, enamel lacks the capacity for natural regeneration after damage or erosion, which can result from various environmental factors. When enamel is compromised, current clinical interventions focus on preventing further deterioration rather than true regeneration. These approaches include the use of remineralizing …

Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)
Pain is a common symptom across all areas of nursing care, yet it is often undertreated in skilled nursing facilities, particularly among residents receiving rehabilitation services. Pain in this population may result from a variety of causes, including musculoskeletal conditions, wounds and pressure injuries, neuropathic pain, and chronic illnesses. A review of Minimum Data Set (MDS) reports and resident pain reports from the short-term rehabilitation unit revealed a concern of disparity. Long-term care residents demonstrated strong quality indicator scores (9.21 out of 10), while short-term stay residents scored significantly lower (2.76 out of 10). This discrepancy raised concerns about pain …

Csbsju Ash Tree Maps, Trevor Barton
Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)
Ash trees in MN are recently susceptible to the invasive species of Emerald Ash Borer. These insects burrow into native MN ash trees, lay their larvae, and significantly harm or kill the trees. MN native ash trees are not equipped to deal with this invasive species and rather need to be chemically treated to save the trees. These maps depict the GPS locations of the ash trees on CSBSJU campus proper. Trees were mapped by hand with a Garmin GPS device while size, health, and value to campus assessments were recorded to pair along with the maps in a separate …

Unveiling The Biochemical Pathway Responsible For Ankyloglossia (Tongue-Tie) By Tracking Enzymatic Activity Of Apoptosis Pathways, Becca Ringstad
Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)
Ankyloglossia (Tongue-tie) is a condition that is caused by failed cellular degeneration leading to a short lingual frenulum. This short lingual frenulum tethers the tongue to the bottom palate of the mouth and leads to problems, including breastfeeding for infants, depriving them of important proteins that build the gut microbiome, strengthen the immune system, and fight off antigens. If left untreated, it leads to problems with speech articulation, airway development, and obstructive sleep apnea. Treatment involves a frenectomy, which is the release of the short lingual frenulum using surgical scissors or a laser. Ankyloglossia can occur with conditions such as …

Keeping Track Of Time: Does Formal Education Of Temporal Symbols Refine People's Ability To Perceive Time?, Alyssa Gabrielle Smith
Keeping Track Of Time: Does Formal Education Of Temporal Symbols Refine People's Ability To Perceive Time?, Alyssa Gabrielle Smith
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
While many studies find a relation between symbolic and nonsymbolic numerical abilities (e.g., Chen & Li, 2014), whether this relation is causal has been questioned. For example, does learning symbols refine nonsymbolic abilities (i.e., Refinement Hypothesis)? One study found that as children gained proficiency in their verbal counting abilities, their nonsymbolic numerical acuity increased (Shusterman et al., 2016), thus supporting the Refinement Hypothesis. As studies have found similar processing for numerical and temporal abilities (e.g., Walsh, 2003) and a similar relation between symbolic and nonsymbolic timing abilities has been found (e.g., Hamamouche & Cordes, 2020), it begs the question of …

Two Glands, One Problem: Navigating Fertility Treatment In Concurrent Nonclassic Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia And Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, Paul Meram, Mary Show, Elliott Gappy, Ajaz Banka
Conference Presentation Abstracts
Background: Nonclassic congenital adrenal hyperplasia (NCCAH) caused by 21-hydroxylase deficiency is generally a milder variant of congenital adrenal hyperplasia characterized by partial enzyme activity and variable increases in adrenal androgen levels. Patients presenting with such a condition may present in adolescence or adulthood with symptoms such as acne, hirsutism, irregular menses, and infertility. These symptoms often overlap with those of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), creating challenges in differentiation and management. It is critical to differentiate between PCOS and NCCAH in females of reproductive age, as hyperandrogenism treatment depends on the underlying cause, such as adrenal, ovarian, or a combination of …

Internalizing Diasporic Peoples: How Do We Keep Native Hawaiians Connected?, Kallie P. Kaaihue-Paopao
Whittier Scholars Program
In the attempt to better understand the grounds for the generation culture disconnect of identity in Native Hawaiians, I study the diaspora of my people. Diaspora is the dispersion of people from their native lands. I find interest in this aspect of my people because the most common studies blame our dispersion on socioeconomic status and as a Native Hawaiian that wishes to do more for her people, I want to express that while it plays a part that there is a disconnection between the social actions and reactions of Hawaiʻi’s people. Common questions that I find unanswered are, why …
