Exploring The Lived Experiences Of Second-Career Educators, Kyle Avink May 2026

Exploring The Lived Experiences Of Second-Career Educators, Kyle Avink

Dissertations

School districts across the United States face a persistent teacher shortage driven by high attrition rates, declining enrollment in teacher preparation programs, and increasing demands on educators (Carver-Thomas & Darling-Hammond, 2017). Teacher attrition is especially high within the first three to five years, with nearly 40-50% of new teachers exiting within their first five years (Carver-Thomas & Darling-Hammond, 2017; Cells et al., 2023; Gray et al., 2015; Ingersoll et al., 2025). In response, many states have expanded alternative certification pathways that allow professionals from other fields to enter teaching, making second-career educators a potential solution to workforce challenges (Afacan, 2022; …

Exploration Of Expressive Prosody During Dyadic Conversation In Adults With Dementia, Kara Marie Sabanski May 2026

Exploration Of Expressive Prosody During Dyadic Conversation In Adults With Dementia, Kara Marie Sabanski

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Dementia is associated with progressive cognitive and communicative impairments that can contribute to social withdrawal and reduced quality of life. Although prior research has explored musical interventions and the use of prosodic features for early diagnosis, little is known about how expressive prosody is linked to engagement and communicative state during dyadic conversation in individuals with dementia. The present study examines different speech characteristics present in expressive prosody during conversation and explores whether these characteristics are associated with differences in conversational and behavioral engagement. Acoustic measures of pitch and speaking rate were analyzed during conversational interactions. Results indicated that prosodic …

Affective Perception Of Color In Classroom Design, Emmalyn Burns May 2026

Affective Perception Of Color In Classroom Design, Emmalyn Burns

Interior Design Undergraduate Honors Theses

The physical environment of a classroom plays a crucial role in shaping how students learn, engage, and interact with their education. This study focuses on color’s influence on well-being, focus, and overall academic experience. Many higher education classrooms still rely on a standard that implements neutral colors, which does not always align with student preferences. While prior research has shown that color can have measurable cognitive and emotional effects, its thoughtful application in university settings remains limited. Current architectural design processes often overlook ongoing user-based feedback past the pre-design phase, leaving students without input on the decisions for their learning …

Blue Waves And Razor Blades: For Large Jazz Ensemble / Big Band, Mikel Shane Prather May 2026

Blue Waves And Razor Blades: For Large Jazz Ensemble / Big Band, Mikel Shane Prather

Graduate Thesis Collection

The concept and main theme of Blue Waves and Razor Blades originally began in 2014 when I was a young composer attending Butler University for my master’s degree in composition. The idea of the piece was to use flow and motion based upon my imagining of an ocean wave crashing into the bank, sometimes moving past rocks and barriers causing slight tension. The theme and the beginning structure was created and originally titled Blue Waves. Before I could really focus on this piece, opportunities arose in Los Angeles where I started my current career in the music film industry and …

A Rare Convergence: Malignant Thymoma With Pericardial Invasion In A Brca2 Mutation Carrier With A Synchronous Breast Mass, Mahmoud Yacout, Mohammad Chisti May 2026

A Rare Convergence: Malignant Thymoma With Pericardial Invasion In A Brca2 Mutation Carrier With A Synchronous Breast Mass, Mahmoud Yacout, Mohammad Chisti

Conference Presentation Abstracts

Introduction Thymomas are rare epithelial tumors of the anterior mediastinum, accounting for < 1% of adult malignancies, with an estimated annual incidence of approximately 0.15 cases per 100,000 persons. Although often indolent, thymomas are malignant by definition and may invade locally, recur, and, less commonly, disseminate. They are classically associated with autoimmune conditions, most notably myasthenia gravis, yet their relationship with hereditary cancer syndromes remains poorly defined. Germline BRCA2 mutations are well established in the pathogenesis of breast, ovarian, pancreatic, prostate, and other malignancies through impaired homologous recombination DNA repair. However, an association between BRCA2 mutations and thymic epithelial tumors has rarely been reported. We describe an unusual case of invasive malignant thymoma with pericardial invasion in a BRCA2 mutation carrier, discovered concurrently with a synchronous FDG-avid breast mass suspicious for malignancy. Case Presentation An 85-year-old man with a history of CAD, hypertension, GERD, and prior radical prostatectomy presented with several months of unintentional weight loss and chronic diarrhea. During evaluation for recurrent appendicitis, imaging incidentally revealed a large anterior mediastinal mass measuring up to 7.9 cm with irregular margins. FDG-PET demonstrated moderate metabolic activity within the mass (SUVmax 3.8). CT-guided biopsy revealed a thymic epithelial neoplasm consistent with thymoma. There was no clinical evidence of myasthenia gravis. He subsequently underwent partial sternotomy with thymectomy. Pathology demonstrated a 6-cm type B2 thymoma with direct pericardial invasion, positive surgical margins (R1), and no regional lymph node involvement (pN0), consistent with pT2 stage III disease by the Masaoka–Koga system. Given high-risk features, adjuvant radiation therapy was initiated, with planned surveillance using PET imaging and circulating tumor DNA monitoring. Concurrent PET imaging identified a palpable FDG-avid right breast mass. Genetic testing revealed a pathogenic germline BRCA2 mutation. The breast lesion is currently undergoing diagnostic biopsy and surgical evaluation. Discussion Thymomas are malignant neoplasms with a predilection for local invasion. Type B2 thymomas carry a higher risk of recurrence, particularly in the presence of pericardial invasion or incomplete resection. Complete surgical excision remains the cornerstone of management, while postoperative radiotherapy is recommended in invasive or R1 disease to reduce locoregional recurrence. The coexistence of invasive thymoma and a germline BRCA2 mutation is exceedingly rare and raises questions regarding shared oncogenic mechanisms. While thymic epithelial tumors are not classically associated with BRCA mutations, DNA repair defects may contribute to tumorigenesis in rare malignancies. The presence of a synchronous FDG-avid breast mass in a male BRCA2 carrier further underscores the importance of comprehensive oncologic and genetic evaluation and highlights the need for multidisciplinary management in complex hereditary cancer presentations. Conclusion We report a rare case of malignant type B2 thymoma with pericardial invasion in a BRCA2 mutation carrier, identified alongside a synchronous breast mass suspicious for malignancy. This case highlights the potential intersection between thymic epithelial tumors and hereditary cancer syndromes, reinforces the importance of genetic evaluation in patients with multiple malignancies, and underscores the need for long‑term multidisciplinary surveillance. Further investigation is warranted to elucidate any causal relationship between BRCA‑mediated DNA repair dysfunction and thymoma development.

Efficient Compression Framework For Time Series Self-Supervised Learning, Brooklyn Berry May 2026

Efficient Compression Framework For Time Series Self-Supervised Learning, Brooklyn Berry

Theses and Dissertations

Time series data is perhaps one of the most broad data types that exist and is studied by diverse research fields. Recently, Self-Supervised Learning (SSL) training frameworks, the training frameworks to pre-train deep learning models without human annotations, have been proposed. Because human annotation for time series is typically associated with being costly, there is a growing interest in developing effective SSL for time series data. In SSL, the pre-trained model will often produce a time series embedding series summarized from the original time series to ensure temporal information is preserved. Although such representation can effectively capture the semantic information, …

“Sometimes I Feel That Going To College Was A Waste Of Time”: Latinas’ Lived Experiences Navigating Culture, Gender, And Marriage Post-College Degree, Nancy Peña May 2026

“Sometimes I Feel That Going To College Was A Waste Of Time”: Latinas’ Lived Experiences Navigating Culture, Gender, And Marriage Post-College Degree, Nancy Peña

Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative critical narrative study explores how Latinas navigate and make meaning of gender roles within their heterosexual marriages post-college graduation. Data are collected via semi-structured interviews with 10 Latina participants: an initial plática focus group, followed by individual interviews, and a final plática focus group for member checking. Key findings reveal that despite Latinas acquiring autonomy, stability, negotiated power, personal growth, and social development as a result of attaining a degree in higher education, overall development is limited due to heightened responsibilities, persistent gender hierarchies, continuous religious norms, and constant gender role guilt. The evidence suggests that although attaining …

Advances In Computational Methods For Sparsity-Promoting Linear Inverse Problems, Jonathan Lindbloom May 2026

Advances In Computational Methods For Sparsity-Promoting Linear Inverse Problems, Jonathan Lindbloom

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Inverse problems arise throughout science and engineering, where indirect, incomplete, and noisy observations are used to recover unknown parameters of interest. In these applications, the corresponding forward or measurement models are often ill-conditioned or underdetermined, so direct inversion is unstable and regularization is required. This thesis develops computational methods for linear inverse problems in which the unknown is assumed to be approximately sparse in a transformed domain defined by a linear, possibly rank-deficient operator, such as a finite-difference matrix, with particular emphasis on large-scale problems.

The thesis makes three main contributions. First, it generalizes hierarchical Bayesian maximum a posteriori estimation …

Insights Into Androgen Receptor Allosteric Modulation By P,P'-Dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene Binding At The Binding Function-3 Site And Site-Specific Binding Function-3 Mutations, Emanuel Aggeo Flores

Theses and Dissertations

One of DDT’s metabolites, p,p’-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE), has been classified as an endocrine disrupting chemical (EDC) due to its ability to interfere with hormone signaling by binding to nuclear receptors (NR) such as the androgen receptor (AR).

Structurally, the AR contains a ligand-binding domain (LBD) where endogenous steroids bind. Furthermore, the LBD contains a surface binding site known as binding function-3 (BF-3), which studies suggest exerts an allosteric effect on bound DHT when small, hydrophobic molecules bind.

Here, we present a study that examines how specific BF-3 site mutations and DDE binding affect steroid stability within the LBP utilizing computational methods. …

Mineral King Cabin Roof Rennovation, Leilani G. Lau May 2026

Mineral King Cabin Roof Rennovation, Leilani G. Lau

Architectural Engineering

This project explored performance-based design by analyzing and redesigning the roof for a cabin built in the 1950s and located in Mineral King Valley in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, California. The Sierra Nevada Mountains experience heavy amounts of snow during the winter season. In the winter, the cabin is unoccupied, so the performance objective was collapse prevention, rather than life safety. Since the performance objective focused on collapse prevention at a time when the building was unoccupied, the probability of failure did not need to be low, so safety factors were omitted. This approach required deeper understanding of the code …

Exploring The Role Of Video Games In Civil Engineering Education And K-12 Stem Engagement, Jillian S. Codron May 2026

Exploring The Role Of Video Games In Civil Engineering Education And K-12 Stem Engagement, Jillian S. Codron

Architectural Engineering

Civil engineering education has traditionally emphasized a linear progression from theory to application, with foundational concepts introduced in lecture before being reinforced through laboratory or design experiences. While effective for advanced learners, this approach can limit early engagement for K–12 students who may struggle to connect abstract principles to realworld engineering practice. This project examines the use of video games as interactive, feedback-driven environments for introducing civil engineering concepts and practices to younger learners in more exploratory and accessible ways.

The study pursues four primary objectives: evaluating the educational affordances of selected video games; examining how gaming experiences have influenced …

Authoritarian Bidding: Domestic Institutions And The Domestic Politics Of Mega-Sporting Event Campaigns, Zanela Denise Sygaco Bajarias May 2026

Authoritarian Bidding: Domestic Institutions And The Domestic Politics Of Mega-Sporting Event Campaigns, Zanela Denise Sygaco Bajarias

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines why some authoritarian regimes bid for mega sporting events while others do not. While existing research focuses primarily on the impacts of hosting, this paper shifts attention to the political logic of bidding itself. It argues that bidding is not merely a preparatory step but a strategic political act. Drawing on selectorate theory, audience cost theory, and research on authoritarian institutions, the study proposes that variation in bidding behavior is driven by differences in institutionalization. Authoritarian regimes with nominally democratic institutions, such as legislatures, parties, and controlled media, face broader domestic audiences and stronger incentives to demonstrate …

F.L.A.I.R. -- A Flow-Level Autoencoder For Intrusion Recognition, Joseph P. Dumond May 2026

F.L.A.I.R. -- A Flow-Level Autoencoder For Intrusion Recognition, Joseph P. Dumond

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) networks underpin critical infrastructure worldwide, yet securing them remains an open challenge. Traditional intrusion detection systems require labeled attack data for training, a resource that is rarely available in real industrial deployments. They also fail against novel threats, a model trained on known attacks has no basis for detecting anything outside its training set. This thesis presents a Flow-Level Autoencoder for Intrusion Recognition, or FLAIR, a fully unsupervised deep learning system for network intrusion detection in IIoT environments. FLAIR is built on a Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) autoencoder trained exclusively on normal network traffic. Rather …

Securing Distributed Energy Resources: A Dnp3 Master Station With Semantic Web Integration For Decentralized Der Data Sovereignty, Ethan J. Coffman

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

As current electrical grids trend toward a heavier reliance on DERs, there is a growing need to secure DER communications while maintaining data sovereignty for device owners. Previously, work by Donna Thakadipuram established the foundation for a decentralized framework using Solid by implementing a prototype that used a Raspberry Pi and a DSP to simulate Modbus traffic and upload the data to a Solid server. This thesis extends her work to simulate multiple DERs using Typhoon HIL and communicate to each device over DNP3/TCP. The system uses a Python-based DNP3 master to collect telemetry from all 12 DERs before transforming …

From Mobilenet To Repvit: A Survey Of Edge-Optimized Computer Vision Architectures, Eli A. Bosch May 2026

From Mobilenet To Repvit: A Survey Of Edge-Optimized Computer Vision Architectures, Eli A. Bosch

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

Edge-optimized computer vision is a constantly evolving field where the definition of efficiency has changed repeatedly. This thesis presents a literature survey of four recent Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) families, all analyzed through a consistent framework of accuracy, parameter count, and Multiply-Accumulate Operations (MACs), alongside a survey of five CNN and Vision Transformer (ViT) hybrid models to examine the direction of the field. It was found that accuracy follows a logarithmic curve with respect to parameter count, exhibiting diminishing returns as models scale. This suggests that architectural design contributes more to performance gains than parameter count alone. Theoretical efficiency metrics …

Performance Comparison Of A Two-Level And A Three-Level 1500v Three-Phase Grid-Tied Solar Inverter, Shawn Sproles May 2026

Performance Comparison Of A Two-Level And A Three-Level 1500v Three-Phase Grid-Tied Solar Inverter, Shawn Sproles

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

With the global switch to renewable energy sources, photovoltaic energy has become an integral source to harvest from. When solar panels convert sunlight into a DC voltage, a grid-tied inverter is needed to transform this DC voltage into an AC voltage to interface with the AC grid. The most widely used topologies for grid-tied solar inverters are two-level three-phase inverters and three-level NPC three-phase inverters. Compared to two-level inverters, three-level NPC inverters have advantages such as lower EMI, lower THD, and lower switching losses. Moreover, three-level NPC inverters are shown to have higher efficiency in low-voltage applications at medium to …
