Since 2020, the visibility of police misconduct on social media has increased dramatically. While these specific instances have led to national conversations about law enforcement, little continues to be known specifically about how this online presence shapes college students’ perceptions of their campus police specifically. In this study, we explore how viewing internet-based, and specifically social media content, depicting police misconduct influences university students’ views of campus police. By examining perceived legitimacy of campus police in a university setting, it allows researchers to examine an environment where police serve distinct roles and interact with their constituency in a unique way. …

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the treatment and management of anisometropia with orthokeratology lenses compared to traditional spectacle lenses. The present study aimed to quantify the interocular difference in relative corneal refractive power shift and examine its association with the differential axial growth.

Methods: One hundred and two subjects between the ages 8 and 14 years old with over -0.50D of myopia and at least 1D of anisometropia were treated with either orthokeratology lenses or traditional single vision spectacle lenses. Aeroecological processes, especially powered flight of animals, can rapidly connect biological communities across the globe. This can have profound consequences for evolutionary diversification, energy and nutrient transfers, and the spread of infectious diseases. The latter is of particular consequence for human populations, since migratory birds are known to host diseases which have a history of transmission into domestic poultry or even jumping to human hosts. In this chapter, we present a scenario under which a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) strain enters North America from East Asia via postmolting waterfowl migration. Nowadays, wearable sensors such as heart rate monitors and pedometers are in common use. The use of wearable systems such as these for personalized exercise regimes for health and rehabilitation is particularly interesting. In particular, the true potential of wearable chemical sensors, which for the real-time ambulatory monitoring of bodily fluids such as tears, sweat, urine and blood has not been realized. Head-to-head comparisons of conventional influenza vaccines with adenovirus (Ad) gene-based vaccines demonstrated that these viral vectors can mediate more potent protection against influenza virus infection in animal models. In most cases, Ad vaccines are engineered to be replication-defective (RD-Ad) vectors. In contrast, replication-competent Ad (RC-Ad) vaccines are markedly more potent but risk causing adenovirus diseases in vaccine recipients and health care workers. To harness antigen gene replication but avoid production of infectious virions, we developed “single-cycle” adenovirus (SC-Ad) vectors. Previous work demonstrated that SC-Ads amplify transgene expression 100-fold and produce markedly stronger and more persistent immune responses than RD-Ad vectors …

Heightened Uncertainty And Determination: The “Trump Effect” And College Aspirations For Undocumented Students, Carolina Valdivia, Marisol Clark-Ibáñez, Lucas Schacht, Juan Duran, Sussana Mendoza

Journal of College Access

This article examines the educational experiences of undocumented high school students during the Trump administration—a time marked by the intensification and expansion of immigration enforcement practices. Drawing on 24 in-depth interviews, we find that undocumented high school students experienced increased instances of bullying near the time of the 2016 U.S. presidential elections. Our respondents also worried about the growing uncertainty surrounding immigration policies and the future of DACA. This uncertainty shaped their plans; many students felt compelled to prioritize working and delay starting college to make use of their work permit while they had access to DACA and build emergency …

I take my hat off to the 'paper-and-pencil practitioner' Peter Newby for his clever article "Opera's Not Over 'Til Arepo Returns", which I naturally assume was produced without the aid of a computer. At first sight I thought he really had beaten computer buffs to the punch. A few weeks ago I tackled this classic problem, using the Wordsworth database of 14,300 five-letter words; I gave it up as impossible!

The Springs Bulletin 1943-1949

The Springs Cotton Mill traces it's beginning to the organization of the Fort Mill Manufacturing Co. which opened a plant in Fort Mill, SC in 1888. The company went on to open plants in Lancaster, SC, Chester, SC, and Kershaw, SC. At one time Springs was the largest industrial employer in South Carolina. Springs began an association with a Brazil based company (Coteminas) in 2001 and merged with Coteminas in 2005 forming Springs Global. By 2007, Springs had ended all manufacturing in South Carolina.

The Springs Bulletin was a newspaper generally published bimonthly for Springs employees. The Bulletin offered news …
