How Much Control Should We Have Over Our Social Media Feeds?: Reflections On A Lesson For High School Students, Daniel G. Krutka, Edward Henry

This paper describes a week-long high school lesson designed to help students understand and reclaim agency over their algorithmically curated social media feeds. Drawing on Nicholas Carr's framework of media's three functions — message creation, selection, and transmission — the lesson traces how algorithms displaced human editorial judgment beginning with Facebook's 2006 News Feed. Through guided inquiry, social media diaries, and platform comparison charts, students examined how much control they have, and should have, over what they see online. Argumentation is a linguistic act marked by links, tools, and mechanisms whose primary function is to direct the utterance in an argumentative direction. Among these mechanisms are argumentative links, which relate to the concerns of argumentative theory at the linguistic level, and whose origin is attributed to both Decroe and Anscomber. These links not only have a traditional grammatical function, but also have a guiding function for the argument. This study presents an experimental investigation of the microstructure of Self-Compacting Sand Concrete (SCSC) containing recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) and fine recycled concrete powder (FRCP) under a sulfate attack. SCSC specimens were submerged and stored for one year in a sodium sulfate solution. The microstructure of SCSC was investigated using quantitative X-ray diffraction and SEM analysis performed on samples taken from both the core and surface of the specimens. Also, the impact of different percentages and sizes of recycled aggregates (i.e., varying from nano- up to micro-sized aggregates) on the microstructural properties of SCSC exposed to sulfate attack was evaluated. …

Mangroves are important coastal ecosystems that support carbon storage, coastal protection, biodiversity, and sediment dynamics. However, the variability and composition of sediments in the tropical Wouri Estuary (Cameroon) remain poorly understood. This study investigates the relationships between key properties such as moisture content, organic matter, and mineral matter in mangrove sediments of the Wouri Estuary. Three sediment cores were collected from the west (Mungo), central (Koo), and east (Dibamba) flanks of the estuary and analyzed using the Loss on Ignition (LOI) method.
