The Place We Live Which Does Not Exist is a collection of stories examining the intersection of trauma and catharsis through a psychologically manufactured underground environment. By inhabiting the perspectives of multiple characters, each story builds toward a collective reality that exists parallel to our present. As the shortsightedness of hedonistic expression is shown, the viability of escapism as panacea is questioned, exploring the ends of a society increasingly dependent on reclusive tendencies.

This dissertation is composed of three papers that examine the ways that electoral rules may provide elites incentives that cut against citizen interests. In the first, titled ``Maybe Later: Term Limits and Strategy Behind Candidate Entry," I use the context of term limits to reexamine conditions for candidate entry. I argue they reduce the number of candidates who challenge incumbents, leading to a lock-in effect. By increasing the frequency of open races, term limits incentivize potential challengers to wait for an open race. Teacher Voices In Ethnic Studies: Bridging Policy And Practice Through Educator Insights In California, Isiah Peter Iniguez

This study explores ethnic studies teachers’ perceptions of implementing ethnic studies as a required course in California. This study used both critical pedagogy (Freire , 1970) and pedagogical content knowledge (PCK; Shulman, 1986) as theoretical frameworks. Through interviews with thirteen ethnic studies teachers across California, this research uncovered the pedagogical demands, implementation challenges, and transformative potential of ethnic studies education. The findings illuminated a fundamental tension between ethnic studies’ community-centered nature and pressures toward standardization. Teachers emphasized that ethnic studies had to be rooted in community, describing powerful outcomes when the curriculum reflected students’ identities, local histories, and lived experiences. …

This phenomenological case study, employing narrative inquiry and thematic analysis, captured the first-person voice of emerging adults (ages 20–28) with intellectual, developmental, and learning disabilities to explore how experiences of risk and self-determination shaped their personal narratives, or story of self. Guided by Critical Disability Theory, Foucault’s concept of relational power, and Shogren’s Causal Agency Theory, the study challenged the systemic bubble-wrapping that denies this population the "dignity of risk" (Perske, 1972). Data were collected from six participants through semi-structured interviews, adapted photovoice submissions, and participant selfreflections. Chloroplasts are green, photosynthetically active organelles ubiquitous to the plant kingdom. Owing to their cyanobacterial origin, chloroplasts consist of three membranes: the outer envelope, the inner envelope, and the thylakoid, the latter of which is the site of the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis. Not only do the lipids that make up these membranes delineate aqueous compartments, but they also respond dynamically to developmental and environmental cues, constitute the matrix that scaffolds protein machinery, and even serve as functional components of some proteinaceous complexes. Histopathology image classification is a critical component of cancer diagnosis. However, the gigapixel scale of Whole-Slide Images (WSIs) and the high variability in tissue staining and scanner quality across medical centers present significant computational challenges. This dissertation proposes a comprehensive machine learning framework to address these challenges, bridging the gap between theoretical models and practical clinical deployment.

First, to manage the massive dimensionality and noise inherent in WSIs, this research develops a robust feature extraction methodology. Awareness, Protest, And Action: Women Science-Fiction Writers As Writer Activists, Carolyn Nolte

Following the end of World War II, science-fiction literature, which was mostly dominated by white male writers, experienced an increase in stories written by women writers. Of these postwar stories written by women, the three women writers in this dissertation imagined how their present-day experiences informed the future by exploring their concerns about humanity’s collective trajectory. By analyzing how their stories dramatize possible future social, psychological, biological, and environmental harms, this dissertation argues that these women writers’ works distinguish them as writer-activists, a concept I borrow from Rob Nixon’s work Slow Violence and the Environmentalism of the Poor.

Inspired by Quillen’s geometric approach to study group cohomology, Avramov introduced the theory of support varieties to study finite modules over local complete intersection rings. Geometric properties of the variety encode important homological information, and this theory has been a useful tool in studying complete intersection rings leading to many advances in local commutative algebra. By the work of several authors, this theory has now been expanded to encompass any noetherian local ring. Background: Elder mistreatment (EM) is a significant public health problem that is frequently underdetected and underreported. Insufficient public recognition and engagement have been hypothesized as one contributor to this underreporting; however, few data sources exist to quantify public awareness or engagement with EM at the population level.

Objective: This study examined relative internet search interest in EM compared with other forms of abuse (child abuse and domestic violence) in the United States using Google Trends data.

Energy properties of attractors in individualized non-linear dynamic systems brain models were analyzed. Namely, the minimum energy cost required to reach fixed points from the origin was found and compared between models. The purpose of this project was to determine energy cost variability within and between patients, and to explore potential correlations between energy costs and phenotypic variation such as task performance. If useful correlations are found, this framework can be used for the design of individualized neurostimulation strategies.

In a nonpayment proceeding, the landlord claimed the apartment was exempt from rent stabilization due to high rent vacancy deregulation. The tenant challenged this deregulation and the proper monthly rent. Citing inconsistencies in the apartment's rent history, including varying rent registrations and periods of no registration, the tenant moved for discovery into the regulatory status and legal regulated rent. The court found "ample need" for discovery due to these unexplained irregularities and granted the tenant's motion, directing the landlord to produce the requested information.

We propose a deep neural network based stochastic frontier model that can handle complex non-linear patterns both in the frontier and in the distribution of inefficiency term. To illustrate our methodology, we employ quarterly data to estimate the technical efficiencies of large US banks from the first quarter of 1984 to the second quarter of 2010. The mean efficiency of US banks during this time period is 89.43%. Between 2004 and 2008, the mean efficiencies of these banks are significantly lower than the overall average, with an average of 81.30%. BACKGROUND: Blood pressure (BP) control remains suboptimal in the United States despite available low-cost antihypertensive medications. Even small out-of-pocket medication costs may contribute to adherence. We determined whether $0 versus >$0 out-of-pocket costs for antihypertensive medications is associated with differences in adherence, discontinuation, BP control, and cardiovascular outcomes.

METHODS: We included veterans with newly diagnosed hypertension who initiated antihypertensive medication in the Veterans Health Administration from 2004 to 2022. A fuzzy regression discontinuity design with 2-stage residual inclusion leveraged differences in medication copay policy at a 50% service-connected disability threshold (≥50% service-connected disability: $0 out-of-pocket cost versus < 50%: $8 monthly cost). Outcomes included 1-year medication nonadherence (proportion of days covered < 80%), 1-year medication discontinuation (no medication in the final 90 days of the study year), 1-year BP control (systolic BP/diastolic BP < 140/90 mm Hg and < 130/80 mm Hg) and cardiovascular disease events (myocardial infarction, coronary revascularization, peripheral artery disease, or stroke).

Metatranscriptomic (MTX) sequencing quantifies gene expression from the collective genomes of microbial communities (microbiomes), enabling assessment of functional activity rather than functional potential. While differential expression testing is essential for RNA-sequencing analysis, current metatranscriptomic approaches have only been benchmarked on simulated data, resulting in a lack of standard practices for analysis of real datasets. Here, we use mock communities (defined mixtures of microbial cells with known properties) to quantitatively assess robustness and susceptibility of current approaches to various confounders including organisms' low relative abundance, differential abundance, low prevalence, global transcriptional output changes, and compositional effects. Hospitality and tourism firms are central actors in sustainable tourism transitions because their operations are resource intensive and highly visible to consumers and local communities. This study examines whether board-level governance mechanisms—board independence, gender diversity, a sustainability committee, CEO duality, and board size—are associated with environmental performance, and whether environmental performance is related to firm value in global hospitality firms. Despite major advances in trauma system and hospital-based care, a significant proportion of fatalities occur in the prehospital setting, often within minutes and before arrival of emergency medical services (EMS) [1]. Graduate assistantships represent early entry points into intercollegiate athletics and serve as critical sites of professional socialization. Guided by Mead’s (1934) role theory and Foucault’s (1975/1977) concept of power, this study examined how graduate assistants (GAs) negotiated their dual roles as students and employees within Division I Power Four athletic departments. Semi-structured interviews with 10 current GAs revealed how organizational expectations normalized overwork, positioned the master’s degree as a compulsory credential, and sowed imbalance that shaped participants’ identities and well-being. Findings demonstrate how GAs internalized structured constraints and reproduced organizational norms, framing overwork as a necessary rite of passage. These …

This conceptual paper examines foreign pedagogy as a critical lens for understanding how teaching philosophies, instructional strategies, and educational values travel across cultural and national boundaries. Drawing on comparative education, sociocultural theory, and postcolonial scholarship, the paper investigates the processes by which pedagogical models are borrowed, adapted, or imposed between educational systems.
