From the fifth and fourth centuries B.C., professional teachers travelled throughout Greece, teaching a wide variety of subjects from music to grammar. One subject that these sophists taught earned massive notoriety for them and, consequently, their trade: rhetoric. Within Athenian democracy, this craft of speaking well to persuade others became both valuable for those who are politically active and dangerous for demagogues. Coinciding with this emerging art of rhetoric was the emergence of Athenian tragedy. These tragedies served to speak about and encourage reflection upon their own contemporary politics and culture. The court granted the tenant's motion for summary judgment, dismissing the landlord's holdover petition. The court found that the lease lacked a conditional limitation, which is necessary to automatically terminate a tenancy upon breach, allowing only the landlord's election to terminate. Without such a limitation, the landlord's proper remedy before lease expiration was an ejectment action, not a summary holdover proceeding. Additionally, the predicate notice to cure and notice of termination were deemed impermissibly vague, as they merely restated lease provisions and made conclusory statements about breaches without sufficient detail or new allegations arising during the cure period, thus rendering …

Automatic readability assessment aims to predict how difficult a text is for readers to understand. The concept of readability has been widely studied across languages due to its significant impact on reading comprehension, leading to the development of various methods and approaches. In this study, I addressed two key challenges in readability assessment. First, I examine the performance of statistical classifiers and transformer-based models, including CAMeLBERT(Inoue et al, 2021.) with a focus on their ability to generalize under domain, genre, and stylistic shifts. This study examines how decoding temperature affects output uncertainty in a fixed-context retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) system. We define uncertainty as the semantic dispersion among repeated answers under the same fixed retrieved context, with greater dispersion interpreted as higher uncertainty. To isolate this answer-generation variability from retrieval drift, each question was paired with a fixed retrieved context, and repeated generations differed only in temperature. The experiment used nine questions drawn from a machine-learning textbook corpus, with three questions each at easy, moderate, and hard difficulty. Each question was evaluated at five temperatures (0.0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0) over 30 iterations, …

This thesis evaluates whether the core principles of the Moneyball ideology continue to predict team success in Major League Baseball in the modern analytics era. In the last two decades, the widespread adoption of advanced statistical methods across all franchises has raised the central question of whether the original inefficiencies Moneyball exploited may no longer exist. To address this, this study analyzes twenty years of team‑level data from 2005-2025 (excluding 2020), incorporating seven performance metrics historically or conceptually tied to Moneyball which include OBP, WHIP, FIP, DRS, SB%, clutch, and wins per dollar, alongside demographic controls. This project addresses the challenge of state estimation in real-world conditions by fusing data from multiple sensors using the Kalman Filter. To ensure numerical stability, we use the Joseph Form covariance update, which guarantees valid results but introduces significant computational overhead due to its complexity. To overcome this limitation, we implement a parallelized solution using custom CUDA kernels on a GPU, distributing matrix operations across thousands of threads rather than relying on sequential CPU execution. Through systematic benchmarking across matrix sizes ranging from 4×4 to 4096×4096, we identify a crossover region where GPU performance surpasses CPU efficiency. This work shows …

This survey research study investigated the perceptions of pre-service school counselors regarding the counseling needs of gifted students. Findings indicated held beliefs that were congruent with the literature on gifted students and their counseling needs. However, beliefs based on stereotyped images of gifted students were also present.

In responding to Rhode Island’s 2019 legislative call for High Quality Curriculum Materials (HQCM), this study examines how the integration of HQCM and physics content- strengthened curriculum in a teacher preparation program helps develop preservice teachers’ Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) and elementary students’ understandings of physics ideas. This project investigates a new practicum model in which preservice teachers first learn a mini-unit on electrical energy to deepen their content knowledge and then to adapt state-suggested HQCM and select appropriate pedagogies to design and implement science lessons that meet the high expectations. Comparative Inhibition Testing for Personalized Microbiota Selection

This case report evaluates a strategy for selecting optimal donor material for Cervicovaginal Secretion (CVS) transplantation. To identify a suitable match, CVS from four healthy, Lactobacillus-dominated donors was tested against a patient’s sample to observe microbial inhibition. Theoretically, effective donor material should produce a visible inhibition zone (halo), indicating suppressed growth of pathogenic bacteria. However, initial testing yielded unreadable results with no conclusive evidence of inhibition. Consequently, my study pivoted to analyze the direct effects of donor samples on the growth of specific pathogens, Gardnerella vaginalis and Prevotella bivia.

Drosophila have circadian rhythms which are daily biological rhythms synchronized by an internal clock. These rhythms regulate behavioral and physiological systems within their bodies. The endogenous fly clock—made of an oscillating gene-protein feedback loop found in central pacemaker cells in the brain— sets endocrine, locomotor, and metabolic rhythms to the 24-hour Earth day The central clock signals to peripheral clocks, setting measurable rhythms. Mutations to these clock genes disrupts the oscillator, resulting in rhythm changes. In this project, we will study how flies’ circadian rhythms and cell respiration in the brain changes with mutations to clock genes. By measuring oxygen …

The phosphatase and tensin homolog protein (PTEN) is a critical regulator of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway, which governs cellular growth and metabolic balance. Mutations in the PTEN gene are strongly linked to macrocephaly and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in humans. While PTEN deficiency is known to cause neuronal hypertrophy and metabolic stress, its impact on the< endogenous circadian clock, the internal timing system that regulates daily physiological cycles, remains poorly understood. Proper circadian function is vital for metabolic homeostasis, which may be dysregulated in PTEN-deficient models.

Tidal pools are a diverse ecosystem that are home to a wide range of important species that support our environment and marine habitats. Tidal pools along the New England coastline have been greatly affected by human activity, through direct contact with humans, as well as the increasing effects of climate change. Adapting the protocols from UC Santa Cruz Multi-Agency Rocky Intertidal Network (MARINe) and the National Park Service Northeast Temperate Network’s (NETN), we set up multi-year plots to track abundances intertidal species throughout Rhode Island.
