Assessing Developmental Neurotoxicity Due To Pyrethroid Insecticide Exposure In C. Elegans, Katharine Boyd, Timothy A. Crombie

Pyrethroids are a type of insecticide widely used in agriculture and public health programs. These insecticides disrupt neuronal signaling in target insects through voltage-gated sodium channels and have been linked to cardiovascular and neurological disease in humans.The nervous system of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans is fully mapped, and specific behavioral circuits can be tested, making it a powerful model for studying neurotoxicity. Because the primary target of pyrethroids is not conserved in C. elegans, secondary mechanisms of pyrethroid neurotoxicity can be identified by testing whether specific behavioral circuits are affected.

A Split Hopkinson (Kolsky) Bar is a device used to find a material’s mechanical response under high strain rate loading scenarios (10² – 10⁴ s⁻¹) [1]. It is commonly used to simulate vehicle crashes or ballistic impacts. The novelty of the device is its size and cost of its components compared to other SPHBs on the market. The motivation is to further the capabilities on campus by providing the first dynamic material testing device.

Cosmic rays (CRs) are high-energy particles; bare atomic nuclei, with varying origins and energy levels. Research in this field is focused on identifying potential origins, understanding transport mechanisms faced on their journey to Earth, and interpreting the angular structure of incident CRs. One obstacle of this research is the trajectory modulation induced by the heliosphere during the CRs’ journey. In this work we employ a method to reconstruct the properties of CRs as they were at the local interstellar medium (LISM) by means of a nonlinear model fit to the map at Earth. The standard models for gamma ray bursts (GRBs) typically assume that shockaccelerated electrons follow a power law distribution of energies. However, this behavior is not what some gamma ray bursts show. In this project, it is suggested that the presence of thermal electrons causes temporal and spectral structure across the afterglow, which is significantly different from models assuming a pure power-law distribution of electrons. To model the afterglows, we decide on a large number of samples of GRBs from the Swift database and obtain the temporal and spectral indices at arbitrary times. Stability Analysis through Bipropellant Engine Research (SABER) is a small-scale, compressed air and propane bipropellant rocket engine designed as the test subject of a combustion instability analysis. Through various static fires at varying combustion chamber lengths, the project demonstrates that less combustion instabilities are experienced at smaller characteristic lengths.

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have become a powerful tool for studying polymers, designing new materials, and composites. Mechanical behavior in MD simulations are typically evaluated through stress-strain curves. However, MD-generated stress-strain curves are often obscured by thermal noise from atomic vibrations. This noise complicates the reliable derivation of mechanical properties and hinders objective and reproducible analysis. The noise in the stress-strain curves has been removed by using a Butterworth low-pass filter, enabling clearer interpretation of stress-strain data. First Amendment jurisprudence has significantly evolved within the past decade as the Supreme Court has expanded religious protections, further developed the Compelled-Speech Doctrine, and narrowed what public school activities are considered violations of the Establishment Clause.  There is no other U.S. Supreme Court case that illustrates these monumental shifts in First Amendment interpretation quite like Kennedy v. Foolhardy or farsighted, Americans are investing their retirement savings in volatile cryptocurrencies.  These investments, conducted largely through brokerage windows enabling plan participants to invest in options not on their employer-sponsored retirement plan menu, are increasing.  Clarity on whether and to what extent fiduciary duties apply to self-directed brokerage windows in 401(k)s is needed to protect Americans’ retirement outlooks and to equip fiduciaries with enough information to fulfil their obligations.  No agency or court has confirmed the existence of fiduciary duties relating to brokerage windows, let alone defined the contours of any such duty.  The Department of Labor (DOL) recently withdrew …

Embankment filling on weak subgrades is prone to sliding and collapse failures. Positive-negative batter pile combinations were proposed to be installed at the embankment slope toe to constrain lateral deformations, but systematic inquiries into the mechanical characteristics of positive-negative batter pile combinations are still lacking. To address the problems of low toughness and poor deformation ability of cement soil, short-chopped polyvinyl a lcohol (PVA) fibers were added to modify and toughen the cement soil in this paper, and unconfined compressive and flexural tests were conducted on the PVA fiber-reinforced cement soil with different cement contents. The results show that compared with plain cement soil, the fiber-reinforced cement soil has stronger compressive deformation capacity, a flatter descending branch of the compressive stress –strain curve, a higher residual stress level, and better compressive toughness. To address the surface distresses such as surface polishing, aggregate exposure, pitting, and unevenness in cement concrete pavement, a polymer composite modified cement mortar material incorporating both polypropylene fibers and redispersible latex powders was designed for the bonded thin overlay repair of existing cement concrete pavement. Based on the orthogonal test method, composite modified mortars with different mix proportions were prepared, and their performance indexes, including fluidity, flexural strength, compressive strength, and drying shrinkage, were tested to optimize and determine the optimal mix proportion. To reveal the effects of the number of dry-wet cycles and the material density gradient on the deterioration laws of macroscopic mechanical properties, microscopic damage mechanisms, and failure modes of foam concrete, foam concrete test blocks with densities of 800 kg/m3, 1 000 kg/m3, and 1 200 kg/m3 were investigated in this paper. Macro-micro joint tests and three-dimensional discrete element simulation methods were combined.
