This qualitative study centers the lived experiences of U.S. Central American students at a large community college in the Southwestern United States. Guided by Latinx Critical Race Theory (LatCrit) and Garcia’s (2023) Servingness framework, the study examines how institutional structures—including classrooms, student support services, and co-curricular spaces—shape students’ experiences of belonging, access, and recognition. Grounded in LatCrit, particularly its attention to racist nativism, the study situates students’ experiences within broader racialized and migration-related contexts. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with eight Central American students and recent alumni. The construction of roads, canals, and supporting infrastructure in British India connected urban environs of power to interior peripheral spaces. The conclusion of the Second Anglo-Sikh War in 1849 saw the East India Company stand alone as the paramount power over the Indian subcontinent. A century of conquest gave way to a century of internal management. This shifted the state’s ‘gaze’ inward. Spatially fractionated radiation therapy (SFRT) using lattice radiotherapy (LRT) has emerged as a promising treatment technique for bulky, nonresectable tumors by delivering spatially heterogeneous dose distributions consisting of high-dose vertices embedded within lower-dose regions. Although early clinical experiences have demonstrated potential therapeutic benefit, widespread clinical implementation of LRT remains limited due to the absence of standardized treatment planning workflows, consistent optimization strategies, and clearly defined evaluation metrics for heterogeneous dose distributions. A modified maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) algorithm is proposed for modeling threshold exceedances with the generalized Pareto distribution (GPD). The algorithm addresses multiple issues with an approach originally published in the Journal Computational Statistics and Data Analysis (Castillo and Serra, 2015). The modified algorithm is intended to be comparatively simple to understand and implement, accurate in the handling of boundary conditions, relatively fast and reliable for most data sets, and relatively easy to transfer between computer languages by leveraging existing optimization routines.

Accurate evaluation of transverse skeletal relationships is essential for orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. Dentition may compensate for skeletal discrepancies through buccolingual tipping of posterior teeth, potentially masking underlying transverse imbalance. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between transverse skeletal width and posterior tooth angulation using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).

Nevada is considered a new “Hispanic settlement state” and “New Immigrant Destination” as the state has experienced significant Latinx population growth since the 1990s. This research addresses an empirical gap by centering Nevada in understanding Latinxs lived experiences through the taken-for-granted concept of “home” and a theoretical gap by advancing New Destinations research where moral order, economy, and region influence ethnic incorporation.

Accurate assessment of transverse maxillary dimensions and surrounding bone morphology is critical for safe orthodontic treatment planning. Orthodontic expansion should remain within the biological limits of the alveolar housing and palatal bone to prevent adverse periodontal outcomes, including dehiscence, fenestration, and gingival recession. Standard diagnostic methods, such as dental casts and two-dimensional radiographs, offer limited information about the three-dimensional anatomy that restricts orthodontic tooth movement. This study investigates how Taiwanese cultural identity is expressed in the piano works of composers Hsiao Tyzen and Ma Shui-Long, focusing on Hsiao’s Memories of Home and Ma’s A Sketch of the Rainy Harbor. While both composers are pivotal figures in Taiwan’s musical history, their approaches to integrating local heritage with Western compositional techniques differ significantly. This dissertation argues that they represent two distinct creative paths: Hsiao’s model of Romantic Nationalism and Ma’s model of Modernist Synthesis.

Most modern mammals maintain stable body temperatures (Tb) ~37ºC and high metabolic rates. Hibernators, like ground squirrels, are homeothermic during the active summer season, but are heterothermic during the hibernation season. During the hibernation season, ground squirrels follow a predictable pattern of torpor bouts interrupted by interbout arousals. Tenrecs are unusual because they are heterothermic and heterometabolic even during the active season. Previously, ground squirrel bile constituents were shown to be predictive of whether a squirrel is in the summer active or winter hibernation season. Analog frequency sampling filters (FSFs) realize a desired frequency response by interpolating a frequency response through a set of harmonically related frequency samples from the filter’s frequency response and are magnitude and phase coefficients used in the filters transfer function. FSFs can be designed to have exact linear phase which makes the FSF attractive for many applications. A FSF’s system transfer function (STF) shows that the filter can be implemented by a series connection of a comb filter and a parallel array of resonators. Temporal information extraction plays a critical role in the biomedical domain, where the ability to identify events and their temporal relationships is central to interpreting research findings. However, annotated corpora for this task remain scarce and costly to produce and the existing models developed for clinical text do not transfer well. This work bridges that gap through iterative silver-label refinement. A temporal model originally trained on news-domain data is adapted to biomedical text through cycles of automatic labeling, targeted correction, and retraining without the need for comprehensive manual annotation.

This qualitative study examined how women superintendents access and sustain the role. Grounded in Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) and using portraiture, the study explored how self-efficacy and contextual conditions shape leadership trajectories. Data were collected through interviews and analyzed by adopting narrative coding and cross-case portraits. The cultivation of self-efficacy, the accessibility of opportunities through connections, and the management of systemic obstacles influence trajectories. This study examines the design and implementation of a contextualized engineering-specific corequisite Precalculus I course and its impacts on student achievement, motivation, and sense of belonging. This study was conducted in response to decreasing national rates of mathematical readiness, the elimination of stand-alone developmental mathematics courses across multiple states and systems, and the demand for research related to effective corequisite models in mathematics coursework. A major driver of these declines is the pathogenic chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), which causes the fatal skin disease chytridiomycosis. Since its discovery in the late 1990s, Bd has been directly implicated in the extinction of 90 species of amphibians and the declines of hundreds more. The relict leopard frog (Rana onca) once ranged across drainages in southern Nevada, northwestern Arizona, and southwestern Utah. Following a decline, the species only persisted in a few geothermally influenced hot springs, which led to the perspective that hot springs were high-quality habitat. Despite increasing calls for equity and instructional leadership development, the role of the assistant principal (AP) remains inconsistently structured across schools. Research suggests that APs are frequently assigned managerial responsibilities, while access to instructional leadership experiences associated with principal preparation may vary (Goldring et al., 2021; Gonzales et al., 2022; Pollock et al., 2017).
