As a First Nations artist walking and working in collaboration with other Indigenous creatives, in this piece I explore in dialogue with my sister Sara, the reinterpretation of Beethoven's fifth symphony, seeking to address and alter the colonial narratives linked to a Beethoven sculpture accessed via a QR code. The Beethoven sculpture serves as a means for cultural reinterpretation and decolonisation through modification of Beethoven’s Fifth, Movement One. This paper is a reflection and timeline of my experience organizing a union and negotiating a contract as a student worker at Barnard College. I explored the power dynamics between student workers and college administrations, how to promote unity for progress, and why some undergraduate students are deciding to organize. I discussed the actions of the college that could stifle union organizing and negotiations, the obstacles involved in organizing, and the ways to build solidarity through awareness and coalition. I summarized the main takeaways from my experience and characterize the current student labor movement.

Strategies In Bargaining Faculty Retrenchment Provisions: Insights From Cases Of Implementing Contract Language, Gary Rhoades

In this article on faculty (and professional staff) retrenchment, based on my recent national analysis of 506 collective bargaining agreements, I delineate four strategies to negotiating the topic found in contract provisions (with more than one strategy often found in the same contract). The strategies are: Procedural (focused on due process); consultative (addressing employee involvement in deliberations); conditional (defining pre-conditions of retrenchment); and re-alignment (speaking to reversing the decades-long relative disinvestment in academic and student facing professional staff). Graduate student unionization has rapidly increased over the last decade, with almost 40% of graduate student employees unionized by 2024. Yet, little is known about how these contracts address graduate students’ academic freedom – an often-ambiguous area due to graduate students’ dual roles on campus as both employees and students. Using textual analysis of thirteen collective bargaining agreements, this study examines how graduate student collective bargaining agreements include and address matters of academic freedom and the implications this may have on graduate students’ roles on campus and in the greater campus hierarchy. This paper describes the unusual collective bargaining landscape for public academic institutions in the state of Nebraska where state legislation has mandated both pay transparency and limits to the collective bargaining process. Specifically, it explores the unprecedented 2024-2025 bargaining cycle which relied on innovative union tactics of nationwide freedom of information requests (FOIA) to reach contract agreement in the face of twelve years of administration stonewalling tactics. The case study of Nebraska is important as it provides an actual account of negotiations where state limits on collective bargaining have yet to be tested in the courts.

One Faculty, One Mission: A Unified Faculty Model For California Community Colleges, Debbie Klein

This article advances a unified, non-tiered faculty model as essential to fulfilling the mission of the California Community Colleges (CCC) system. Although the system is charged with realizing open access and educational equity, nearly 70% of faculty serve in part-time or contingent roles—often without proportional compensation, institutional stability, or meaningful participation in governance. Drawing on research demonstrating that faculty working conditions shape student learning conditions, the article argues that structural employment inequities undermine the system’s democratic promise. Developing cost-effective and active catalysts that would replace noble metals is desirable for the ammonia decomposition reaction. Hence, this thesis focuses on the development and evaluation of a 10Ni/0.75TiO2-0.25CeO2 catalyst for ammonia decomposition, a promising route to carbon-free hydrogen production. The system parameters investigated include the effect of reaction temperature (550, 650, and 750°C) and the catalyst mass (100, 200, and 300 mg) on the performance of the ammonia decomposition process. The primary objective of this work is to investigate how catalyst composition and metal-support interactions influence activity, hydrogen production, and ammonia conversion. Background: The timing of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in patients with non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) may critically impact clinical outcomes, yet the ideal surgical window remains unclear. We aimed to evaluate the association between time-to-CABG and in-hospital outcomes among NSTEMI admissions undergoing CABG.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study utilized the US National Inpatient Sample database from 2017 to 2021 to evaluate the association between time-to-CABG and key in-hospital outcomes, including mortality, cardiac arrest, cardiogenic shock, ischemic stroke, acute kidney injury, and blood transfusion rates, while assessing length of stay (LOS) and hospital charges exclusively among survivors. Ulnar stress fractures are relatively rare, particularly in the context of collegiate cheerleading. This case report explores the presentation, diagnosis, and surgical management of an unexpected stress fracture in the ulna of a collegiate cheerleader. An 18-year-old female presented with persistent, localized pain in her non-dominant arm. Imaging revealed an isolated ulnar stress fracture, an unusual finding despite participating in this physically demanding sport. Surgical intervention was deemed necessary, and a nail fixation technique was employed to stabilize the fracture. Ulnar stress fractures, though rare in cheerleading, can present unique challenges. A Warthin tumor is a salivary gland neoplasm that arises in the parotid gland which is frequently benign. This case study presents a rare instance of a Warthin tumor occurring in an extraparotid location; specifically, within the left-sided cervical lymph nodes of a 64-year-old male patient. The patient initially presented with fluctuating cervical adenopathy. Although an initial ultrasound-guided biopsy was inconclusive,  a computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a well-demarcated, heterogeneous lesion in an atypical location between the parotid gland and the sternocleidomastoid muscle. Times of uncertainty and rapid change can negatively impact academic health centers (AHC) in complex ways, creating challenges for leaders. These include policy uncertainty, financial instability, workforce stress, reputational risk, operational disruptions, and advocacy pressure. There are also potential opportunities for AHCs during this time of immense change and disruption. This perspective piece reviews the diverse negative and positive impacts of political turmoil on academic health centers. Five considerations are offered for leaders navigating times of uncertainty.

Discernment: Theology and the Practice of Ministry

Technique, efficiency, and measurable outcomes typically govern contemporary Western approaches to evangelism. Such approaches presume a thin account of the gospel, a punctiliar understanding of conversion, and an instrumental view of the church’s witness. This article argues that these assumptions represent not merely pragmatic missteps but theological distortions. Drawing on Scripture, historical theology, missiology, and practices of Christian initiation, I contend that evangelism is best understood as ecclesial witness oriented toward the moral formation of persons and communities under the reign of God.
