Geometric Structure In High-Dimensional Representations: Theory And Applications To Language, Jiayi Chen

This thesis develops a geometric perspective on high-dimensional representations, motivated by applications to language. Rather than treating representations solely as inputs to predictive models, we view them as structured objects whose geometry encodes meaningful information. In particular, we argue that such representations exhibit organization at multiple scales: at a global level, metric and clustering structure capture relationships such as genre, authorship, and discourse; at a local level, geometric quantities such as intrinsic dimension and curvature describe how these relationships vary across the space.

Inflammation is a major driver in many aspects of recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB) pathology, including impaired wound healing, fibrosis, and potentially cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma development. Fibroblasts, as key stromal cells in the dermis, are responsible for orchestrating inflammatory responses through the secretion of cytokines and chemokines upon stimulation with IL-1α or IL-6. Suppressor of Cytokine Signaling 3 (SOCS3) functions as a negative feedback regulator of cytokine signaling and has emerged as a key modulator of inflammatory responses in immune cells and fibroblasts. On March 19, 2025, a key Turkish opposition political figure was unexpectedly arrested on what were presumed to be politically motivated charges. In response, the lira depreciated sharply. Meanwhile, Türkiye has a large and active dollar stablecoin market. Using a time series dataset of trade-frequency Tether vs. lira trading, I exploit this natural exogenous geopolitical risk-off event to investigate the response function of stablecoin traders active in Türkiye to this shock. I find that the shock is associated with a large (5.33% ) abnormal depreciation of the lira. Further, I show that the shock is associated with an abnormal widening …

Who is enlisting in Fiscal Year 2025, and what state-level characteristics are associated with military enlistment rates, service selection, and recruit quality? This study documents the geographic landscape of U.S. military accessions during a period of recruiting recovery, filling a gap in the literature by providing a current, empirical description of who enlists and from where in today’s All-Volunteer Force. This thesis examines how two decades of efforts to abolish chhaupadi have shaped the everyday conditions under which women and girls experience menstruation in western Nepal. Chhaupadi, commonly understood as menstrual seclusion, has been addressed through Supreme Court directives, national policy, criminal law, municipal implementation instruments, hut demolition campaigns, public health programming, and rights-based advocacy. DNA strand breaks are among the most critical forms of genomic damage, arising from endogenous metabolic activity, environmental stress, radiation, and diverse chemical agents. Single-strand breaks and double-strand breaks contribute to genome instability, mutagenesis, carcinogenesis, and neurodegenerative disorders. Cells rely on DNA repair pathways to detect these breaks and initiate repair. In this review, we conducted a comprehensive literature review to systematically compile and examine the mechanisms underlying small-molecule-induced DNA strand breaks. Epileptic seizures are one of the most common neurological disorders worldwide, yet accurate prediction remains a major challenge to date. Existing techniques largely rely on either electroencephalography (EEG) or neuroimaging and use a one-size-fits-all paradigm with limited personalization. Wearable physiological signals such as heart rate (HR), electrodermal activity (EDA), and skin temperature (TEMP) provide a non-invasive, real-time monitoring solution, whose seizure prediction potential is yet to be comprehensively explored. Objectives: Prospective observational cohort study at a tertiary care academic center to evaluate the post-operative use of oxycodone in pediatric tonsillectomy patients and caregiver knowledge of opioid disposal.

Methods: Pediatric patients 6-18 years old undergoing tonsillectomy were enrolled. Patients were excluded if they required prolonged inpatient care, had a history of organ transplantation, chronic pain or narcotic use, congenital or chromosomal disorders, inability to take acetaminophen or ibuprofen, and other significant medical diagnoses that could potentially alter postoperative pain management. A substantial body of evidence exists demonstrating that exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) poses a risk to human health. Data from epidemiological studies of those exposed occupationally or environmentally demonstrate adverse health risks, and these health effects are concordant with data from toxicological studies. Systematic reviews, conducted by agencies, organizations, and independent scientists that synthesize and integrate these data streams, have concluded that a range of health risks arise from PFAS exposure, including different types of cancer, especially kidney and testicular cancer, metabolic alterations such as increased liver enzymes and increased cholesterol, immune dysfunction such as reduced vaccination …

Harvard did exactly that. Corporate employers’ efforts to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) were immediately pushed to the forefront of the political battlefield. In the eyes of Republican lawmakers and politicians, DEI efforts were akin to affirmative action, and therefore unconstitutional in the wake of Harvard. In recent years, the United States has intensified regulatory oversight of cryptocurrency technologies. In August 2022, the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control sanctioned Tornado Cash, a cryptocurrency mixer, leading to the prosecution and conviction of its developers for operating an unlicensed money transmitting business. Congress also amended § 6050I of the Tax Code through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, extending cash transaction reporting requirements to digital assets. Congress knows how to draft a property requirement. There is no such requirement for a Chapter 15 debtor to seek recognition of its foreign proceeding, yet there is a circuit split on the issue. In 2005, Congress enacted Chapter 15 through the Bankruptcy Consumer Protection and Consumer Act (“BAPCPA”). The Second Circuit in In re Barnet held that section 109(a), along with its property requirement, applies in a Chapter 15 case through section 103(a), which provides that Chapter 1 of the bankruptcy code applies to Chapter 15. In May 2019, United States v. Connolly provided a benchmark for government involvement in corporate internal investigations. The decision curtailed the close, and oftentimes coercive nature of the relationship between the prosecutor and corporate counsel conducting internal investigations on a corporation’s behalf. It drew a line between the government improperly outsourcing its investigation to the target corporation and when an employee’s statements are not fairly attributable to government prosecutors, and thus not compelled. The Connolly Court ruled that statements from counsel-led employee interviews, conducted under the threat of termination, were fairly attributable to the government and thus improperly compelled.
