This study explores the development of 3D scanning workflows focused on transforming raw scan data into high-quality, application-ready digital models. While scanning technologies have advanced significantly, the processes required for cleaning, reconstructing, and optimizing data remain complex and underrepresented. Through a series of applied case studies, this research examines geometry processing, AI-assisted texture enhancement, small artifact scanning workflows, and the integration of LiDAR with 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS). Each project emphasizes the decisions, challenges, and techniques used to move from raw capture to final output, highlighting the importance of adapting workflows based on object scale, material properties, and intended use. …

In addition to these health issues, Gender-Based Violence (GBV) continues to be a serious epidemic where survivors cannot safely seek assistance due to social shame and unequal power dynamics. The 71 North Partnership Studio located in Northern Illinois University’s Founders Memorial Library has developed a prototype Vespa simulator featuring an interactive Virtual Reality (VR) game and reactive elements. A previous Mechanical Engineering Senior Design team developed the system and improvements after its original development were sought after over the course of the current school year. The system consists of a stationary bike that allows the rider to lean left and right, which in turn causes their in-game character to turn left and right accordingly, simulating the effect of riding a Vespa scooter within a VR environment. Stamped steel paint can openers are simple tools but still require sufficient strength for the end user and low material consumption for the manufacturer. The goal of this project is to optimize the stamped design of a paint can opener by reducing material cost while maintaining structural rigidity and device performance. This was achieved in part by simplifying the tool’s geometry so that an equation for the mass could be developed analytically and checked against the simulation’s outputs. In a world defined by acceleration and constant connectivity, this thesis examined how individuals experience attention, silence, reflection, and meaning within digitally saturated environments. Contemporary digital culture shapes not only how we communicate, but how we attend, reflect, and process experience. When stimulation becomes continuous, the temporal space necessary for sustained interior reflection shifts, altering the conditions under which individuals process emotion, tolerate silence, and construct meaning. This study examines how the rise of AI-generated media influences public trust in audiovisual communication. As artificial intelligence technology advances, they have become capable of producing highly realistic images and videos that challenge traditional assumptions about the credibility of audiovisual media. This research uses a qualitative visual content analysis to compare AI-generated and authentic audiovisual content shared on social media platforms, specifically on platforms such as Instagram and Facebook. U.S. higher education institutions (HEIs) consistently invest in evaluating existing communication practices and creating new strategies to increase their enrollment and degree completion rates, with recent efforts motivated by predictive trends of an enrollment cliff among traditional first-year student populations. The Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) estimates that due to declining birth rates during and after the 2008 Great Recession, the nation’s number of high school graduates will peak in 2025, followed by a significant decline through 2041 (WICHE, 2024). The persistence of the digital divide continues to limit equitable access to information, despite widespread advances in digital communication technologies. This study examines the role of broadcast radio in influencing consumer behavior and facilitating information dissemination among underserved populations. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research synthesizes qualitative and quantitative findings to analyze patterns of access, trust and media engagement. Results indicate that radio remains a highly accessible and trusted medium, particularly within communities with limited digital access, and that its influence is strengthened through localized content and parasocial relationships with in-air personalities. Dandy Walker Syndrome is a rare congenital brain malformation in which the cerebellum does not fully develop. The cerebellum is responsible for controlling movement and balance and is located at the back of the brain1. Clinical symptoms associated with this syndrome include developmental delays, hydrocephalus, eye abnormalities and dental abnormalities including malformed or missing teeth1. This thesis examines how Black women are using digital media, specifically the popular social media platform, TikTok, to redefine femininity through the soft life SOFT LIFE OR SURVIVAL 2 movement. Historically, Black womanhood has been tied to strength, resilience, and survival, leaving limited space for softness and emotional vulnerability. This tends to create unrealistic expectations, and an undeniable societal pressure on Black women to perform. Despite the expansion of place-based scholarship programs across the United States, Black males from urban communities remain significantly underrepresented in post-secondary enrollment. Though these scholarships are designed to provide expanded or universal access to higher education, Black males disproportionately underutilize this financial resource. This qualitative investigation examines the lived experiences, perceptions, and contextual factors influencing Black males’ decisions regarding place-based scholarship utilization and college attendance.

The purpose of this phenomenological study is to explore how Black students at Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs) describe meaningful interactions with Black staff and how they make meaning of those interactions as it relates to building a sense of belonging. The conceptual framework for this study incorporates Strayhorn’s (2019) college students’ sense of belonging theoretical model as a foundation with Museus’s (2014) culturally engaging campus environment model as a lens for analysis of the findings.

What happens in the space between a school’s espoused mission and the enactment of that mission in the classroom? For faith-based schools—institutions whose very identity rests upon a religiously grounded purpose—this question is not merely technical but existential. While these schools publicly espouse missions centered on a religious faith, research consistently suggests that what is proclaimed on paper is not always what is practiced in classrooms. The rope-walker robot is a mechatronic system that mechanically moves along a hanging rope. When hung onto the rope, it moves forward until it senses an obstacle in front of it (in this case a monkey placard at the end of the rope). The robot uses its arms to progress through the rope, while sensors detect when it is placed on the rope (so it begins moving along the rope), and when it encounters an obstacle in front of it (so it stops moving). Our device, shown in Figure 1, is an autonomous rope-walking robot designed to travel across a suspended climbing rope. The robot waits until it is hanging from the rope, moves forward using a walking arm mechanism, and stops when it approaches the marker at the end of the course. The system is fully self-contained, with onboard batteries, sensors, controls, and mechanical components housed inside a laser cut acrylic body. Despite remarkable progress in deep learning, a major challenge remains: machine learning models often struggle to generalize to unseen domains under distribution shift. In real-world settings, data often differ from training conditions due to changes in lighting, sensor type, image resolution, and style. These differences can significantly degrade performance, highlighting the need for representations that are both robust and generalizable. This thesis addresses this challenge by developing a set of frameworks for generalization across domains in anomaly detection, deepfake detection, and vision-language image recognition. This thesis is a study on women’s religious communities, and the vernacularized traditions practiced by the women themselves from a folkloric perspective. Examining the creative and meaningful ways women find to interact with their faith on a daily basis, this thesis proposes a natural cycle of religious participation which allows the women to move between active and passive participation roles within their religious communities, and creates equitable spaces for women by relying on the communal reciprocity of the group.

This paper studies the effects of overconfidence in a lifetime consumption and savings model that allows for debt accumulation. Overconfidence, a well-documented behavioral bias, leads individuals to hold distorted perceptions of the different interest rates that they face on their savings and on their borrowings. While existing life-cycle models with overconfidence abstract from debt, I introduce a spread between the interest rates on savings and on borrowings, where the overconfident individual forms distorted perceptions of this spread. To model the actual and the perceived spreads, a continuously differentiable logistic function is utilized, and these spreads are incorporated into a standard …

Purpose: 

This study examined longitudinal changes in /ɹ/ production (i.e., the “r” sound) among 14 children aged five to seven at risk for persistent speech sound disorders (SSDs). Children at risk for SSDs show slower or atypical development of /ɹ/, yet little is known about which early patterns predict persistent difficulty, making it difficult for clinicians to prioritize caseloads and provide timely intervention. Using perceptual accuracy ratings across varied /ɹ/ contexts, we modeled growth in /ɹ/ accuracy across different word contexts and evaluated the extent to which early accuracy and changes in /ɹ/production predicted mastery at age seven.
