Validity Of The Schrage Equation In Prediction Of Evaporation Rate Of Liquid N-Dodecane In High-Pressure Nitrogen Gas: A Molecular Dynamics Study, Wazih Tausif, Jordan Hartfield, Md Amin Haque, Zhi Liang

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Evaporation of liquid fuel in a high-pressure air is a process that critically influences fuel–air mixing in advanced propulsion systems. In this work, we use molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study the validity and accuracy of the Schrage equation in quantifying the evaporation and condensation rates of n-dodecane (a diesel surrogate) in air (approximated as N2 gas) with gas pressure varying from 0 atm to above the critical pressure of n-dodecane. The MD simulation results show that the evaporation coefficient (αe) is higher than the condensation coefficient (αc) at the evaporating n-dodecane surface and is lower than αc at the …

Using Machine-Learning-Based Process Map To Guide Evaluation Of Inconel 625 Mechanical Properties In Laser Foil Printing, Yu Hsiang Wang, Sung Heng Wu, Hung Chu Chiang, Pen Ning Yu, Chia Hung Hung, Ming C. Leu

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Inconel 625 is widely studied in powder-based additive manufacturing, but its processing characteristics and mechanical performance in foil-feedstock laser foil printing (LFP) remain largely unexplored. In this study, a gradient boosting regression (GBR)-based process map was developed for LFP of Inconel 625 using 32 single-track experiments. The GBR model achieved R2 values of 0.859 and 0.793 and mean absolute errors of 22.25 μm and 19.83 μm for melt-pool depth and width, respectively, outperforming second- and third-order polynomial regressions in capturing nonlinear melt-pool responses and distinguishing lack-of-fusion, conduction, and keyhole regimes. Three conduction-mode conditions with target depth-to-foil thickness ratios (D/T) …

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

On July 21st, 2015, a blast rang out from the RCE research center in St. Alban on Kennedy Island. Radiation infected the citizens in the surrounding neighborhood. For some, it gave them enhanced abilities; for others, it drained their life force. For the Elder family, it did both. After the loss of his sister, Olivia, Blaine Elder struggles with a double life. To most of St. Alban, he is known as Nightfire, the hero accountable for protecting their city. To a select few, he is Officer Elder of the 1st precinct, a man responsible for raising his …

Responsive Rigor And Strategic Care: Faculty Praxis For Holistic Student Success In The Community College, Jennifer Kelley May 2026

Responsive Rigor And Strategic Care: Faculty Praxis For Holistic Student Success In The Community College, Jennifer Kelley

Library Scholarship

This qualitative study examines how community college faculty conceptualize, communicate, and enact academic rigor and care in their teaching practice. While post-pandemic debates have positioned rigor and care as opposing forces—evident in the "Rigor Wars" that framed care as performative laxity and rigor as gatekeeping—community college faculty successfully integrate these practices to support holistic student success. This research addresses critical gaps in higher education scholarship, which has studied rigor and care separately, focused primarily on four-year institutions, and overlooked faculty perspectives on how integration occurs in practice. Drawing on a single-case study of 38 faculty members at a large Midwestern …

Primate Craniofacial Trauma And Its Relationship To Socioecological Factors, Kaitlyn Harden R. Harden May 2026

Primate Craniofacial Trauma And Its Relationship To Socioecological Factors, Kaitlyn Harden R. Harden

Anthropology Undergraduate Honors Theses

Postmortem analysis of the skeleton can reveal patterns of trauma that have accumulated over an individual’s lifetime. Patterns of trauma within a species can also provide key insights into how that species lived and reflect aspects of their socioecology and life history. Research has been conducted often on postcranial trauma, but is rare regarding the craniofacial region and has not been examined broadly across primates. To fully understand patterns of trauma in primates, rates of trauma must be compared and placed into context of a variety of socioecological factors. To do so, I examined hypotheses including that species with higher …

Preserving The Past: Exploring The Last Frontier's Ecosystem Shifts And Biodiversity Of The Tallgrass Prairies, Gisell Maldonado, Amelia Villaseñor May 2026

Preserving The Past: Exploring The Last Frontier's Ecosystem Shifts And Biodiversity Of The Tallgrass Prairies, Gisell Maldonado, Amelia Villaseñor

Anthropology Undergraduate Honors Theses

In North America, grasslands are a cornerstone of the environment. Historically, the tallgrass prairie was expansive and reached from Manitoba in Canada to Texas. Today this unique ecosystem is highly fragmented and reduced, but it remains an important ecosystem for biodiversity and cattle management. While there are many complex ecological interactions in the prairie, recent research shows that large herbivores are vital in maintaining grasslands through grazing and other behaviors that reduce woody encroachment and support nutrient cycling. Here, we examine cow and bison dietary behaviors and connect these to the ecosystem services provided by these large herbivores. In the …

Tunable Physical Color In Nanostructured Materials: Exploring Reversible Mechanisms For Active Optical Control, Matt Hughes

Chemistry & Biochemistry Undergraduate Honors Theses

Vanadium Dioxide (VO2) thin films have been grown on silicon wafers using atomic layer deposition of TDMAV (tetrakis(dimethylamino)vanadium(IV)) and H2O as precursors. A quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) measurement was used during deposition to confirm growth and resulted in a growth rate of approximately 0.6 Angstroms/cycle. X-Ray Reflectivity (XRR) was performed to confirm growth thickness and reported an approximately 30 nm thin film after 500 cycles of TDMAV precursor deposition. X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy was utilized to determine the phase of the vanadium samples and confirmed the presence of vanadium dioxide as prepared and after annealing under nitrogen …

Gender Identity, Political Alignment, And Views On “Man Or Bear” Trend Among Uconn Undergraduate Students, Erin Tumminello

Honors Scholar Theses

The “Man or Bear” debate, which became wildly popular online in 2024, asks whether someone would prefer encountering a random man or a random bear if alone in the woods. This question is meant to spark conversations around sexual and gender-based violence, and it created considerable discourse. Upon an exploration of the literature, findings include the fact that sexual violence often goes underreported among survivors, and that support of hegemonic masculinity and conservatism among men are associated with lower support for survivors. This study is meant to expand upon these findings, and to examine the ways in which gender identity …

Collaboration And Betrayal: Pius Xi And A Changing World, Nathan B. Higgins May 2026

Collaboration And Betrayal: Pius Xi And A Changing World, Nathan B. Higgins

Honors Scholar Theses

From the negotiations over the 1929 Lateran Accords to the start of World War II in 1939, the Holy See delicately navigated a turbulent diplomatic period. In the preceding century, the Catholic Church saw much of its temporal power decline as European states became more secular, and the pope lost the Papal States during the Risorgimento. Amid the decline in station, the rise of atheistic communism in Russia, Mexico, and Spain posed an existential to the Church, which Pope Pius XI would challenge during his pontificate. To confront this threat, he would work alongside Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany …

Effects Of Modifications To The Contextual Fear Conditioning Paradigm On Context Discrimination Deficits In Mice, Aditi Malpure May 2026

Effects Of Modifications To The Contextual Fear Conditioning Paradigm On Context Discrimination Deficits In Mice, Aditi Malpure

Honors Scholar Theses

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric disorder that can develop following exposure to a traumatic event and is often characterized by impaired contextual discrimination, in which fear responses generalize to safe environments that resemble the original traumatic context. Previous studies have shown that elevated stress hormone levels during traumatic learning can impair memory specificity and promote generalized fear responses. The dentate gyrus (DG) of the hippocampus and adult-born granule cells (abGCs) are thought to play important roles in contextual discrimination and memory specificity. This study used contextual fear conditioning (CFC) paradigm in mice to investigate how enhanced stress and …

Herbivory Of Phragmites Australis Along A Salinity Gradient In Connecticut Wetlands, Sydney H. Kolz May 2026

Herbivory Of Phragmites Australis Along A Salinity Gradient In Connecticut Wetlands, Sydney H. Kolz

Honors Scholar Theses

Invasive Phragmites australis (common reed) is widely distributed in New England wetlands, where it often outcompetes native plants and decreases biodiversity throughout the food web. Controlling its invasion is a priority, especially in salt marsh habitat, but current management techniques are inefficient. Leveraging natural processes may improve control strategies, but in order to do so, we must first better understand how abiotic and biotic stressors interact and affect Phragmites. This study focuses on herbivory and salinity, two factors limiting Phragmites’ fitness. I measured soil salinity and quantified the damage of three herbivore guilds (i.e. gall-formers and stem-borers, leaf-chewers, and …

Benchmarking Gaslighting Attacks Against Speech Large Language Models, Jinyang Wu, Bin Zhu, Xiandong Zou, Qiquan Zhang May 2026

Benchmarking Gaslighting Attacks Against Speech Large Language Models, Jinyang Wu, Bin Zhu, Xiandong Zou, Qiquan Zhang

PhD Student’s Publications Collection

As Speech Large Language Models (Speech LLMs) become increasingly integrated into voice-based applications, ensuring their robustness against manipulative or adversarial input becomes critical. Although prior work has studied adversarial attacks in text-based LLMs and vision-language models, the unique cognitive and perceptual challenges of speech-based interaction remain underexplored. In contrast, speech presents inherent ambiguity, continuity, and perceptual diversity, which make adversarial attacks more difficult to detect. In this paper, we introduce gaslighting attacks, strategically crafted prompts designed to mislead, override, or distort model reasoning as a means to evaluate the vulnerability of Speech LLMs. Specifically, we construct five manipulation strategies: Anger, …

Teacher-Student Diffusion Model For Text-Driven 3d Hand Motion Generation, Ching Lam Cheng, Bin Zhu, Shengfeng He

PhD Student’s Publications Collection

Generating realistic 3D hand motion from natural language is vital for VR, robotics, and human-computer interaction. Existing methods either focus on full-body motion, overlooking detailed hand gestures, or require explicit 3D object meshes, limiting generality. We propose TSHaMo, a model-agnostic teacher-student diffusion framework for text-driven hand motion generation. The student model learns to synthesize motions from text alone, while the teacher leverages auxiliary signals (e.g., MANO parameters) to provide structured guidance during training. A co-training strategy enables the student to benefit from the teacher’s intermediate predictions while remaining text-only at inference. Evaluated using two diffusion backbones on GRAB and H2O, …

We present spatially resolved rest-frame optical emission line maps of four galaxies at z ∼ 2 observed with the Keck/OH-Suppressing Infra-Red Imaging Spectrograph to study the physical conditions of the interstellar medium (ISM) at cosmic noon. Our analysis of strong emission line ratios in these galaxies reveals an offset from the local star-forming locus on the Baldwin–Phillips–Terlevich diagram but agrees with other star-forming galaxies at similar redshifts. Despite the offset toward higher [O iii] λ5008/Hβ and [N ii] λ6585/Hα, these strong line ratios remain consistent with or below the maximum starburst threshold even in the inner ∼1 kpc region of …

The correlation between the mean transverse momentum, [p T], and the squared anisotropic flow, vn2, on an event-by-event basis has been suggested to be influenced by the initial conditions in heavy-ion collisions. We present measurements of the variances and covariance of [p T] and vn2, along with their dimensionless ratio, for Au+Au collisions at various beam energies: sNN = 14.6, 19.6, 27, 54.4, and 200 GeV. Our measurements reveal a distinct energy-dependent behavior in the variances and covariances. In addition, the dimensionless ratio displays a similar behavior across different beam energies. …

The transeverse momentum ( pT )-integrated yield ratios (K*0+K*0‾)/(K++K) in central collisions show a suppression relative to peripheral collisions at the (1.7–3.6) σ level, while a thermal model without final-stage rescattering overpredicts this ratio with a deviation of (6.9–8.2) σ . These results indicate a loss of the measured K …

Vertizontal Price Competition Between Social Media Platforms, Soumya Kanta Mishra, Sumit Sarkar May 2026

Vertizontal Price Competition Between Social Media Platforms, Soumya Kanta Mishra, Sumit Sarkar

American Business Review

We model price competition between two horizontally  differentiated social media platforms, each offering basic and premium services. Users are either platform-anchored or quality-anchored. The platforms are two-sided, with users and advertisers as the two sides. We find a unique and symmetric equilibrium in the pricing game, where platforms earn revenue from both sides. As the quality difference increases, premium service prices rise, while basic service prices drop. Users are subsidized under strong network effects, but the platforms do not subsidize users if they are sufficiently differentiated. Vertical differentiation increases platform profits if sufficient quality difference is achieved for a given …
