The atmosphere’s surface layer (first 50–100 m above the ground) is extremely dynamic and is influenced by surface radiative properties, roughness, and atmospheric stability. Understanding the distribution of turbulence in the surface layer is critical to many applications, such as directed energy and free space optical communications. Several measurement campaigns in the past have relied on weather balloons or sonic detection and ranging (SODAR) to measure turbulence up to the atmospheric boundary layer. However, these campaigns had limited measurements near the surface. We have developed a time-lapse imaging technique to profile atmospheric turbulence from turbulence-induced differential motion or tilts between …

The underlying mechanism(s) by which the PML::RARA fusion protein initiates acute promyelocytic leukemia is not yet clear. We defined the genomic binding sites of PML::RARA in primary mouse and human hematopoietic progenitor cells with V5-tagged PML::RARA, using anti-V5-PML::RARA chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing and CUT&RUN approaches. Most genomic PML::RARA binding sites were found in regions that were already chromatin-accessible (defined by ATAC-seq) in unmanipulated, wild-type promyelocytes, suggesting that these regions are "open" prior to PML::RARA expression. We found that GATA binding motifs, and the direct binding of the chromatin "pioneering factor" GATA2, were significantly enriched near PML::RARA binding sites. Proximity labeling studies …

Siderite (FeCO 3 ) is often assumed to precipitate from dissimilatory reduction of Fe-(oxyhydr)oxides, but geochemical and mineralogical analyses from ferruginous (anoxic, Fe-rich) Canyon Lake, USA, suggest Fe-carbonate represents a direct early precipitate unrelated to substantial oxide burial.X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy of sediment trap materials and an anoxic sediment core indicated a mixture of Fe(II) and Fe(III) in water column particulates and ferruginous surface sediments, while all Mn phases were reduced.About 60 cm below the sediment-water interface, Fe-Mn carbonates were detected by X-ray diffraction and XANES, while Fe extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra were best …

The surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) induces the aggregation of gold nanoclusters (GNCs), leading to the development of a proposed fluorometric technique for detecting thiocyanate (SCN-) ions based on an anti-aggregation mechanism. This approach is straightforward to execute, highly sensitive, and selective. A significant quenching effect occurs in fluorescence upon using the aggregation agent CTAB in GNCs synthesis, resulting in a transition from intense red fluorescence to dim red. The decrease in fluorescence intensity of GNCs in the presence of CTAB is caused by the mechanism of fluorescence quenching mediated by aggregation. As the levels of SCN- rise, the fluorescence of …

The agr quorum-sensing system links Staphylococcus aureus metabolism to virulence, in part by increasing bacterial survival during exposure to lethal concentrations of H2O2, a crucial host defense against S. aureus. We now report that protection by agr surprisingly extends beyond post-exponential growth to the exit from stationary phase when the agr system is no longer turned on. Thus, agr can be considered a constitutive protective factor. Deletion of agr resulted in decreased ATP levels and growth, despite increased rates of respiration or fermentation at appropriate oxygen tensions, suggesting that Δagr cells undergo a shift towards a hyperactive metabolic …

BACKGROUND: Traditional constraints specify that 700 cc of liver should be spared a hepatotoxic dose when delivering liver-directed radiotherapy to reduce the risk of inducing liver failure. We investigated the role of single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) to identify and preferentially avoid functional liver during liver-directed radiation treatment planning in patients with preserved liver function but limited functional liver volume after receiving prior hepatotoxic chemotherapy or surgical resection.
METHODS: This phase I trial with a 3 + 3 design evaluated the safety of liver-directed radiotherapy using escalating functional liver radiation dose constraints in patients with liver metastases. Dose-limiting toxicities were …

Study On A Strong Polymer Gel By The Addition Of Micron Graphite Oxide Powder And Its Plugging Of Fracture, Zhonghui Li, Fangping Chen
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
It is difficult to plug the fracture water channeling of a fractured low-permeability reservoir during water flooding by using the conventional acrylamide polymer gel due to its weak mechanical properties. For this problem, micron graphite powder is added to enhance the comprehensive properties of the acrylamide polymer gel, which can improve the plugging effect of fracture water channeling. The chemical principle of this process is that the hydroxyl and carboxyl groups of the layered micron graphite powder can undergo physicochemical interactions with the amide groups of the polyacrylamide molecule chain. As a rigid structure, the graphite powder can support the …

Recurrent Diffuse Alveolar Hemorrhage And Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Utilization In A Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Patient With Hunter's Syndrome., Nasreen Noor, Gene Peir, Asdis Finnsdottir Wagner, Jay Rilinger, Jenna Miller
Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
We describe the natural history of a three-month-old patient with Hunter Syndrome with hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) who developed recurrent diffuse alveolar hemorrhage (DAH) requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). The patient underwent HSCT with several complications, including veno-occlusive disease and DAH. He was managed with ECMO. Unfortunately, despite initial success he developed recurrent DAH and ultimately died. This is a novel report of this severe adverse event requiring ECMO following the use of HSCT in this rare patient population. Congenital scoliosis (CS) is the most common congenital spinal disorder caused by congenital vertebral malformations (CVMs), influenced by genetic and environmental factors and exhibiting diverse clinical presentations. Here, we identified the critical roles of Vangl1 and Vangl2, two core components in the Wnt/planar cell polarity (Wnt/PCP) signaling pathway, in vertebral development and in predisposition to CVMs in CS patients. We found that in Vangl mutant mouse models, the CVMs present in a Vangl gene dose- and gestational hypoxia-dependent manner. Our studies reveal a complex etiology of CS and its association with Wnt/PCP signaling.

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem that was addressed through this study is the declining student degree completion rate for a public state baccalaureate institution in a northwestern state over the six-year period of 2014 to 2020. The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine if completion of an undergraduate degree within six years could be predicted by the number of advising sessions a student had during degree completion. A student retention model created by Amara Atif, Deborah Richards, & Ayse Bilgin and NACADA’s academic advising core competencies model served as the framework, where student-institutional interactions through best practices in academic counseling can …

Research has indicated that school social workers employ a variety of strategies or interventions that affect the child’s adjustment in school. The psychological, physical, and social issues impacting children after the death of a parent can have long term effects on their development. However, there is a lack of knowledge regarding strategies that provide support for children’s adjustment to the grief process following a parent’s death. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to identify strategies to improve, enhance, and contribute to social work practice. The study was guided by Kubler-Ross’s grief theory, ecological systems theory, and assumptions of …

The development of instruments designed to assess student self-concept is crucial. This understanding of self-concept is based on the premise that it is a dynamic and ever-evolving construct. The concept of self-concept is initially conceived as a unidimensional structure but subsequently evolves into a multidimensional construct. The present study assesses the validity and reliability of the newly developed self-concept instrument. In Indonesia, there is a paucity of research that employs the Rasch Model to examine self-concept instruments, particularly in the context of the junior high school population. The objective of this study was to analyze the self-concept instrument using the …
