Experimental And Numerical Studies On The Compressive Strength Test Of Recycled Aggregate Concrete Using Digital Image Correlation, Bastian Okto Bangkit Sentosa, Joshua Ferdinand, Nuraziz Handika

Makara Journal of Technology

The utilization of recycled aggregate (RA) as substitute of natural aggregate in concrete contributes to the research of sustainable building construction materials. Many applications of RA have been studied worldwide. However, the application of RA with a specific range of strength and specific damage behavior requires further study. This research aims to examine the mechanical characteristics of RA concrete, particularly its load–displacement response and crack pattern, through the experimental and numerical studies of compressive strength test. Laboratory concrete waste from cylindrical sample with 30–35 MPa strength was chosen as RA. The digital image correlation (DIC) method was applied throughout the …

Decorin Suppresses Tumor Lymphangiogenesis: A Mechanism To Curtail Cancer Progression, Dipon K. Mondal, Christopher Xie, Gabriel J. Pascal, Simone Buraschi, Renato V. Iozzo Apr 2024

Decorin Suppresses Tumor Lymphangiogenesis: A Mechanism To Curtail Cancer Progression, Dipon K. Mondal, Christopher Xie, Gabriel J. Pascal, Simone Buraschi, Renato V. Iozzo

Kimmel Cancer Center Faculty Papers

The complex interplay between malignant cells and the cellular and molecular components of the tumor stroma is a key aspect of cancer growth and development. These tumor-host interactions are often affected by soluble bioactive molecules such as proteoglycans. Decorin, an archetypical small leucine-rich proteoglycan primarily expressed by stromal cells, affects cancer growth in its soluble form by interacting with several receptor tyrosine kinases (RTK). Overall, decorin leads to a context-dependent and protracted cessation of oncogenic RTK activity by attenuating their ability to drive a prosurvival program and to sustain a proangiogenic network. Through an unbiased transcriptomic analysis using deep RNAseq, …

On 'Sticky' Interior: Agglutinating As An Interplay Strategy For Building Adaptation, Verarisa Anastasia Ujung, Alya Amany Apr 2024

On 'Sticky' Interior: Agglutinating As An Interplay Strategy For Building Adaptation, Verarisa Anastasia Ujung, Alya Amany

ARSNET

This paper is an exploration into the idea of agglutinating as a building adaptation strategy. This paper examines agglutinating as a potential operation to address the interplay and affective relations between spatial elements, creating a 'sticky' interior which merges or combines these elements. The study in this paper addresses agglutination as the process of re-reading the site in evocative and productive ways, rediscovering the underlying architectural logic which generates new ideas. The study is based on a fourth-year interior architecture design studio project at the Universitas Indonesia, which focuses on various experiments in regard to the theme of adaptative reuse. …

Encoding Colour: Capturing Rule-Based Logic In Design Studio, Zafira Rahmatul Ummah, Paramita Atmodiwirjo Apr 2024

Encoding Colour: Capturing Rule-Based Logic In Design Studio, Zafira Rahmatul Ummah, Paramita Atmodiwirjo

ARSNET

This paper argues that introducing algorithmic thinking to basic design pedagogy should give prominence to the basic logic and attitudes rather than learning the computational devices and tools. This paper examines the integration of computation or algorithmic thinking into a basic design studio in architectural education at Universitas Indonesia. The integration is conducted through a colour composing exercise that comprises four major stages: identifying patterns, rulemaking, colouring-composing, and reflection. The findings from this study demonstrate how the students are utilising algorithmic thinking as the primary reason to design their colour composition in different ways and complexity. Furthermore, the students can …

Visualising Daylight For Designing Optimum Openings In Tropical Context, Dany Perwita Sari Apr 2024

Visualising Daylight For Designing Optimum Openings In Tropical Context, Dany Perwita Sari

ARSNET

With the rising concern for global warming, reducing electricity consumption and promoting daylight utilisation for healthier living conditions are among residential buildings' top priorities. The utilisation of natural light for indoor lighting, particularly in tropical countries like Indonesia, provides health benefits and improves psychological well-being. However, the current condition shows that artificial lighting still accounts for the majority of energy consumption in residential buildings and, arguably, the failure to maximise daylighting was largely due to a limited understanding of the design of openings. This paper aims to exemplify how virtualisation can assist designers through simulation tools to better predict and …

Trilogies: Lessons From 50 Years Facilitating Community-Based Health Assessments And Planning In Appalachia, Bruce Behringer Apr 2024

Trilogies: Lessons From 50 Years Facilitating Community-Based Health Assessments And Planning In Appalachia, Bruce Behringer

Journal of Appalachian Health

Involvement of community and organizational groups is fundamental to most public ventures. Most social, health, economic, and educational improvements in Appalachia have been characterized by successfully integrating community input and finding ways to encourage organizational change and collaboration.

Managing group process and related facilitation skills are fundamental competencies for public health professionals and others guiding change efforts. Groups from communities and organizations can get stalled in their deliberations; a facilitator frequently must think quickly to diagnose the situation and propose alternative approaches. Creative and flexible approaches, learned through practice experiences, can blend with theories and frameworks learned in academic preparation …

Adversity To Action: A Case Study Analysis Of Crisis Leadership, Isabelle Weatherington Apr 2024

Adversity To Action: A Case Study Analysis Of Crisis Leadership, Isabelle Weatherington

Honors Theses

This thesis examines leadership through crisis contexts. I aim to answer two research questions. (1) How do crisis management frameworks intersect with the leadership strategies and characteristics of the person in charge? And (2) How must a leader adapt their natural leadership style and characteristics according to the nature and level of the crisis at hand to ensure leadership effectiveness? To answer these, a comparative case study analysis was performed on the following cases: Winston Churchill and World War II (Case one), George W. Bush and the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks (Case two), and Thad Allen and Hurricane Katrina …

Madeline Hinton: Spatial Ability Tests and Course Performance in Human Anatomy and Physiology I Students

(Under the direction of Dr. Carol Britson)

Visuospatial perception processing is our ability to make inferences about what an object might look like from different angles just by looking at one angle of the object or by looking at a two-dimensional representation of it. This is a skill tested on the perceptual ability portion of the Dental Admissions Test (DAT), and it is also crucial for Human Anatomy and Physiology (HAP) students to be proficient in this skill in order to successfully navigate the organ …

Feminist Political Ecology In The Classroom, Ella J. Yeigh Apr 2024

Feminist Political Ecology In The Classroom, Ella J. Yeigh

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

As the effects of climate change are being felt more frequently, discussions on how to combat such a massive issue are increasingly prevalent. Finding solutions to the climate crisis requires an understanding of how mainstream economic systems have led to the climate crisis and using these same principles to get out of the climate crisis is misguided. Economic actions have inherent value biases that have real political effects. Feminist Political Ecology (FPE) as a theoretical model presents a better understanding of how values that are inherent in economic models such as reliance on efficiency, markets, and continual economic growth have …

Developing More Useful Equity Measurements For Flood-Risk Management, Adam Pollack, Casey Helgeson, Carolyn Kousky, Klaus Keller Apr 2024

Developing More Useful Equity Measurements For Flood-Risk Management, Adam Pollack, Casey Helgeson, Carolyn Kousky, Klaus Keller

Dartmouth Scholarship

Decision-makers increasingly invoke equity to motivate, design, implement and evaluate strategies for managing flood risks. Unfortunately, there is little guidance on how analysts can develop measurements that support these tasks. Here we analyse how equity can be defined and measured by surveying 167 peer-reviewed publications that explicitly state an interest in equity in the context of flood-risk management. Our main result is a taxonomy that systematizes how equity has been, and can be, defined and measured in flood-risk research. The taxonomy embodies how equity is a pluralistic and unavoidably ethical concept. Despite this, we find that most quantitative studies fail …

Gen Zers And Millennials Are Still Big Fans Of Books – Even If They Don’T Call Themselves ‘Readers’, Kathi Inman Berens, Rachel Noorda

English Faculty Publications and Presentations

Identifying with an activity is different from actually doing it. For example, 49% of Americans play video games, but only 10% identify as gamers. According to a recent survey we conducted, there’s also a small gap between reading activity and identity for younger readers: 61% of Generation Z and millennials have read a print book, e-book or audiobook in the past 12 months, but only 57% identify as readers.

And yet there was a puzzling aspect of our results: The 43% of Gen Z and millennials who didn’t identify as readers actually said they read more print books per month …

Preservice Teachers Learning To Teach In An Anti-Racist/Climate-Justice Program: Challenges And Promises, Richard Sawyer Apr 2024

Preservice Teachers Learning To Teach In An Anti-Racist/Climate-Justice Program: Challenges And Promises, Richard Sawyer

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

The global climate crisis represents the most urgent problem facing the planet, impacting social, cultural, political, economic, and environmental dimensions of life. Alarmingly, it has impacted communities of color in disproportionate ways (Goddell, 2023; Pellow, 2013). The climate crisis, along with the intertwined context of racism, places a profound responsibility on social justice teacher educators to prioritize addressing these issues in teacher preparation. The intent of the following two case studies is to explore the impact of a project based teacher preparation program focused on cultural and environmental justice on the pedagogical knowledge and practice of teaching interns at the …
