Mentor Training Curriculum For Mentor Programs Within K-12 Public School Systems, Haley Ulland
Mentor Training Curriculum For Mentor Programs Within K-12 Public School Systems, Haley Ulland
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
To address the issue of school failure, many communities have implemented mentor programs to encourage youth academics and social growth. However, excellent mentor candidates are often hard to find and schedule. Implementing near peer mentor programs within K-12 public school systems could give the same benefits as adult mentor programs with more accessibility and mutual benefits to each party including boosted attendance, academic success, college and career readiness skills, improved social skills, and enhanced emotional well-being. Along with mutual benefits there are also qualities which make some mentors and mentor programs more successful than others including proper training and goal …

The assessment of T-cell clonality by flow cytometry has long been suboptimal, relying on aberrant marker expression and/or intensity. The introduction of TRBC1 shows much promise for improving the diagnosis of T-cell neoplasms in the clinical flow laboratory. Most laboratories considering this marker already have existing panels designed for T-cell workups and will be determining how best to incorporate TRBC1. We present this comprehensive summary of TRBC1 and supplemental case examples to familiarize the flow cytometry community with its potential for routine application, provide examples of how to incorporate it into T-cell panels, and signal caution in interpreting the results …

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) approach to malnutrition diagnosis is based on assessment of three phenotypic (weight loss, low body mass index, and reduced skeletal muscle mass) and two etiologic (reduced food intake/assimilation and disease burden/inflammation) criteria, with diagnosis confirmed by fulfillment of any combination of at least one phenotypic and at least one etiologic criterion. The original GLIM description provided limited guidance regarding assessment of inflammation and this has been a factor impeding further implementation of the GLIM criteria. We now seek to provide practical guidance for assessment of inflammation in support of the …

Perceptions Of Metabolic Syndrome Management Utilization In Relation With Patient Characteristics And Health-Related Quality Of Life, Olajide Adekunle
Perceptions Of Metabolic Syndrome Management Utilization In Relation With Patient Characteristics And Health-Related Quality Of Life, Olajide Adekunle
Pharmaceutical Sciences (PhD) Dissertations
Challenges in managing MetS include untreated risk factors and ineffective management, resulting in poor health-related quality of life (HRQoL). A significant factor contributing to these challenges is the underutilization of management services, possibly due to patients' perceptions of disease management resource utilization (PMU). Therefore, understanding patients' PMU is crucial for improving health outcomes. The study investigated PMU, explored PMU predictors, and investigated the impact of PMU and patients’ demographics on HRQoL. Using a cross-sectional design, data on perceptions of healthcare, medication, and pharmacy service utilization, prior experience with pharmacy services, demographics, and HRQoL were collected from adult individuals with obesity …
Identifying The Roles Of Mir-17 In Ciliogenesis And Cell Cycle, Ashwaq Alanazi
Identifying The Roles Of Mir-17 In Ciliogenesis And Cell Cycle, Ashwaq Alanazi
Pharmaceutical Sciences (PhD) Dissertations
Emerging evidence suggests a significant contribution of primary cilia to cell division and proliferation mechanisms. MicroRNAs, especially miR-17, contribute to cell cycle regulation and proliferation. Recent investigations have highlighted the dysregulated expression of miR-17 in various malignancies, underlining its potential role in cancer. However, the correlation between primary cilia and miR-17 has yet to be fully elucidated. The present study examines the presence of miR-17 in primary cilia. The miR-17 expression is studied in selected ciliary protein knockdown cells. Using in-situ hybridization (ISH), we identified the subcellular localization of miR-17 in both cilia and cell bodies. We confirmed the importance …
A Moment Of Failure: The Debate Surrounding The Strategic Arms Limitations Talks, Grayson R. Jones
A Moment Of Failure: The Debate Surrounding The Strategic Arms Limitations Talks, Grayson R. Jones
War, Diplomacy, and Society (MA) Theses
Following the Cuban Missile Crisis, many in the United States and the Soviet Union believed their leaders had narrowly avoided nuclear annihilation. In response to this crisis, however, American and Soviet citizens asked more questions about nuclear weapons and their spread than ever before, well into the 1970s, and toward the decade of détente, or “de-escalation” between the superpowers. The term détente first appeared in writings from 1912, as France and Germany tried unsuccessfully to ease the tension before World War I.1 However, it is more famous in its use in Cold War foreign policy. The term détente was popularized …

‘Samoye Vazhnoye’: Behind The Scenes Of Russian Cinema, 1908–1924, Katerina Ludwig
War, Diplomacy, and Society (MA) Theses
From the first decade of the 20th century to the middle of the 1920s, cinema in Russia exposed how politics and the modern medium were inseparably intertwined. As works that were produced during a period of great turmoil and uncertainty, films revealed more than a unilateral relationship. Cinema was used in Russia in the late-Imperial and early Soviet eras as an active tool of entertainment, propaganda, art, education, and intellectual discussion. Studying its intersectional nature illuminates areas obscured by purely political or artistic perspectives, which tell either opposite or mutually emboldening tales. This thesis argues on behalf of both …
U.S Presidents In Africa After The Cold War: In Search Of A Reason, Socrates Mbamalu
U.S Presidents In Africa After The Cold War: In Search Of A Reason, Socrates Mbamalu
War, Diplomacy, and Society (MA) Theses
Africa has often ranked low in priority when it comes to U.S. foreign relations. Often, the presence of a threat to U.S. interests in Africa sparks a redirection of U.S. leaders to Africa. The Cold War was one of such periods. This work looks at U.S. leaders after the Cold War, focusing on George W. Bush, whose policies in Africa are considered the most impactful and resource consuming. Scholars have, however, failed to put Bush’s approach to Africa in a broader historical perspective. Existing literature has analyzed Bush’s policies in Africa using programs such as the Millenium Challenge Account (MCA), …
Use Of A Novel Combination Of Multiplex Pcr And Dna Barcoding In Assessing Authenticity Of Ginseng Products, Diane Kim
Food Science (MS) Theses
Ginseng (Panax sp.) is a medicinal plant root used for its purported health benefits, primarily in East Asian countries. The COVID-19 pandemic led to a significant increase in sales of dietary supplements, including ginseng supplements, to purportedly support immune health and provide other health benefits. However, this heightened demand has subsequently increased the risk of adulteration in these dietary supplements. The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of a novel combination of DNA barcoding and multiplex PCR to identify species in ginseng supplements. A total of 50 commercial ginseng supplements containing either Panax ginseng, Panax quinquefolius, or …
Optimization Of Pre-Enrichment And Screening Methods For The Detection Of Salmonella Enterica In Meat Analog Products, Kylie Sacapano
Optimization Of Pre-Enrichment And Screening Methods For The Detection Of Salmonella Enterica In Meat Analog Products, Kylie Sacapano
Food Science (MS) Theses
With the growing demand and variety of meat analogs on the commercial market, there is a need to revisit the methodology for the detection of foodborne pathogens in these products. The current Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulatory methods for Salmonella enterica detection in meat analogs follow the Bacteriological Analytical Manual (BAM) and are time-consuming and costly, requiring pre-enrichment using lactose broth (LB) with a surfactant (e.g., Triton X-100). Therefore, this study aimed to optimize pre-enrichment and screening methods for the detection of Salmonella in meat analogs by comparing the current FDA reference methods to updated techniques. To achieve this, …

Chlorogenic And Caffeic Acids’ Impact On Formation Of Fluorescent And Non-Fluorescent Advanced Glycation End-Products As A Function Of Temperature, Christianne Yapor
Food Science (MS) Theses
The glycation of amino acids with carbonyl groups of reducing sugars produces advanced glycation end-products (AGEs). These AGEs can be harmful to health over time. The research objective was to compare the effects of 0-1.00 mM chlorogenic acid (CGA) and caffeic acid (CA) on AGEs formed in glucose-lysine solutions at 25 °C, 63 °C and 100 °C for 30 and 60 minutes by measuring fluorescent AGEs: vesperlysine A and B, vesperlysine C, and total AGEs, and non- fluorescent carboxymethyl-lysine (CML) and carboxyethyl-lysine (CEL) with LC-MS. Chlorogenic acid inhibited the formation of AGEs to a greater extent compared to CA at …
A Meta-Analysis Of Seafood Species Mislabeling Rates In The United States, Sarah Ahles
A Meta-Analysis Of Seafood Species Mislabeling Rates In The United States, Sarah Ahles
Food Science (MS) Theses
Seafood is vulnerable to species mislabeling due to factors such as complex global supply chains, varying prices, and similar appearance of species. Numerous studies have been published reporting a range of mislabeling rates for various forms of seafood. However, these studies oftentimes focus on lesser-consumed species that are vulnerable to species mislabeling. As a result, the overall mislabeling rate of commercially sold seafood in the U.S. remains unknown, especially for the most consumed species. Thus, the objective of the current study was to compile the results of seafood mislabeling studies into a single resource to provide informative statistics on U.S. …

Breaking Boundaries: Women In Mesopotamia, Eleanor Noble
Breaking Boundaries: Women In Mesopotamia, Eleanor Noble
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
We must examine women's contributions to society to comprehend women's roles and significance in ancient Mesopotamia. Women's roles in society and civilization are still frequently overlooked, both then and now. We must not ignore the importance of women's performance throughout history in these societies. Instead, we need to recognize these achievements made by women in the fields of politics, economic standpoints, and family life. We can distinguish the experiences of women in ancient Mesopotamia and contrast them with those of women in modern society by using textual sources and comparative analysis and research. Ancient writings, artwork, and literature can be …
The Vilification Of The Dark Feminine, Isabella Richmond, Khanh Nguyen
The Vilification Of The Dark Feminine, Isabella Richmond, Khanh Nguyen
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Ereshkigal, the Mesopotamian goddess of the Netherworld, represents the dark feminine that the gods have snuffed and robbed. The famous story of Inanna’s descent into the underworld had a hyper-focus and bias towards Ishtar, Ereshkigal’s sister, the goddess of love and war. The descriptions of the pitiful Goddess Ishtar being stripped of her regalia and adornments passing each gate and how God Ea had cunningly come to her rescue are to distract the truth of Ereshkigal, in her loneliness and bitterness of her fate. While her sister, adorned with lapis beads across her neck and body draped in royal robes, …

The Intersection Of Law And Culture: Native Hawaiian Rights And The Hawaiian Homes Commission Act, Kiana Cablayan-Kennedy, Leia Hernandez
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
The Hawaiian Homes Commission Act (HHCA) of 1920 is a crucial legislation for Native Hawaiian rights. The HHCA addresses the socio-economic disparities that Native Hawaiians face, especially after the overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy by the United States in 1893. The HHCA entails over 200,000 acres of land for homesteading to Native Hawaiians to preserve Native Hawaiian culture and self-sufficiency. Despite the purpose of the HHCA, multiple challenges have accumulated over the years - precisely the landmark case of Kalima v. State of Hawaii. Kalima v. State of Hawaii brought forth issues from 1959 through 1988 but became a civil …

In a world where new food combinations are created on a daily basis, it is often difficult to remember where the roots of our food actually came from. With so many options to choose from at our fingertips, it can be difficult to know what is the right choice for us. Take a moment to think about what food means to you. Is it a matter of survival? A matter of importance? A matter of honor? No matter how you perceive food, it will always be there waiting for us. With new food trends constantly popping up, such as fusing …
Postural Control In Young Adults With And Without Recurrent Back Pain: Influence Of Symptom Characteristics, Rachel Berns
Postural Control In Young Adults With And Without Recurrent Back Pain: Influence Of Symptom Characteristics, Rachel Berns
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Many individuals with low back pain (LBP) experience episodic symptoms. During symptomatic episodes, individuals with LBP have delayed trunk muscle activation during anticipated postural perturbations, though it's unclear if these postural control changes persist between symptomatic episodes. This study examined anticipatory postural muscle activation in adults with and without recurrent LBP to determine the influence of muscle fatigue and typical symptom characteristics on trunk muscle activation. 55 young adults with a greater than one-year history of recurrent LBP and 30 young adults with no history of LBP were recruited. Electromyography electrodes were placed on their thoracic and lumbar paraspinals, external …
Demographic Effects On Climate Change Awareness, Alessandro Demoreno
Demographic Effects On Climate Change Awareness, Alessandro Demoreno
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Does wealth blind us to the planet's plight, or does it empower action? In this research, I examine the extent to which people's income, political affiliation, and media consumption have affected their fear of climate change.
