Preventing Asl Interpreter Burnout Through The Use Of Self-Care, Grace Hodge

Liberty University Research Week

The interpreter shortage is drastic, especially around mental health counseling, due to compassion fatigue, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress. Burnout in the field of interpreters is a considerably big issue, and strategies are needed to mitigate negative affects. This topic is crucial to the field of interpreting because interpreters are needed in all areas of life. dDeaf people exist in all industries, including mental health, making the need for qualified interpreting professionals necessary as dDeaf individuals seek equivalent experiences to their hearing counterparts. Discussed is the importance of interpreting in the field of interpreting as well as the different roles …

Molecular Geometry Changes In Some Carbonyls And Aromatic Rings Upon Electronic Excitation: Herzberg-Teller Vibronic Coupling And Unitary Duschinsky Rotation, Maryam Mohammed Al Sakkaf Apr 2024

Molecular Geometry Changes In Some Carbonyls And Aromatic Rings Upon Electronic Excitation: Herzberg-Teller Vibronic Coupling And Unitary Duschinsky Rotation, Maryam Mohammed Al Sakkaf

Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses

The common assumption in probing the dynamical motion of molecules is that the molecular electronic activity depends weakly on vibrational coordinates on electronic excitation. Therefore, electron-vibration interaction, which is known as vibronic coupling (VC), may be ignored. The HerzbergTeller theory of vibronic coupling (HTVC) is a breakdown of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation (BOA) since nuclear and electronic degrees of freedom can no longer be separated. The inclusion of a single quantum of a non-totally symmetric vibrational mode changes the overall symmetry of the state and permits the transition. Often, this assumption may be invalid, especially in carbonyl and aromatic compounds. This …

Extensions Of Algebraic Frames, Papiya Bhattacharjee Apr 2024

Extensions Of Algebraic Frames, Papiya Bhattacharjee

Algebra Seminar

A frame is a complete lattice that satisfies a strong distributive law, known as the frame law. Frames are also known as Pointfree Topology, as every topology is a frame. Even though the concept of frames originated from topology, the idea has expanded to many other areas of mathematics and frames are now studied in their own merit. Given two frame L and M, we say M is an extension of L if L is a subframe of M. In this talk we will discuss different types of frames extensions, such as Rigid extension, r-extension, and r*-extension between two frames. …

African Plants In Jamaican Farms And Gardens, Thera Edwards Apr 2024

African Plants In Jamaican Farms And Gardens, Thera Edwards

Oxford ICSB

Plants of all growth forms and regeneration strategies were introduced to Jamaica by European slavers and by Enslaved Africans. Some species such as Tamarind used to purify drinking water on ships arrived through purposes of practicality while others that such as yam and plantain were transported as food supplies on the ships or by the Enslaved Africans as tubers for planting in their countries of destination. Tuber crops proved to be invaluable in hurricane prone islands such as Jamaica as the underground tuber was left undamaged by the high winds of the storms. Other crops such as Plantain while not …

Wolf In Sheep's Clothing: How Victims' Rights Bills Continue To Let Down Both Crime Victims And Defendants, William Colton Seidel Apr 2024

Wolf In Sheep's Clothing: How Victims' Rights Bills Continue To Let Down Both Crime Victims And Defendants, William Colton Seidel

Georgia Criminal Law Review

There are underlying principles of law that root our criminal justice system into a balanced process between the state and the defendant. However, the victims of crime are often forgotten, and their input limited. To address these concerns, numerous victims’ rights bills have been developed all over the country. Although there are well-written sections of these laws, overall, they are underdeveloped. The newest version of this movement, Marsy’s Law, fails to fix any of the previous issues. With the passage of victims’ rights bills containing sections that serve to endanger this balance while simultaneously failing to fully empower victims, this …

Parental Kidnapping And Domestic Violence: The Need To Reform And Enforce State Action, Anna Ratterman Apr 2024

Parental Kidnapping And Domestic Violence: The Need To Reform And Enforce State Action, Anna Ratterman

Georgia Criminal Law Review

When civil family issues intersect with criminal acts, the civil and criminal systems fail to effectuate a complete remedy. Specifically, there are few effective protections for victims of domestic violence during the pendency of domestic relations proceedings. Given the complicated gender dynamics and inequalities that have developed throughout history, it is unsurprising that the criminal and civil systems have failed to prioritize prosecution of crimes against women. Current criminal laws fail to treat domestic violence and parental kidnapping as serious crimes and instead adopt the view that domestic disputes are private issues to be handled within the family. In turn, …

Paying For Prison: Equal Protection Remedies For The United States' Wealth Discrimination Problem, Alexandra Smolyar Apr 2024

Paying For Prison: Equal Protection Remedies For The United States' Wealth Discrimination Problem, Alexandra Smolyar

Georgia Criminal Law Review

The American dream promises wealth, mobility, and security, yet daily millions of Americans live in abject poverty. What’s more, state and local policies render low-income people uniquely vulnerable to criminalization, further lessening their ability to attain this purported American dream. These effects are not incidental. Rather, they reflect a complexly interwoven system of wealth-based discrimination oftentimes promulgated and perpetuated by government actors. Yet, most constitutional anti-discrimination measures do not reach wealth-based discrimination despite the horrific everyday effects felt by low-income communities nationwide. The criminalization of poverty compounds these problems to create a never-ending cycle of discrimination and collateral consequences whose …

Burning The Candle At Both Ends: A Case For The Right To Counsel At The State Habeas Level, Sierra Stanfield Apr 2024

Burning The Candle At Both Ends: A Case For The Right To Counsel At The State Habeas Level, Sierra Stanfield

Georgia Criminal Law Review

Shinn v. Ramirez is the latest in a line of court decisions that place debilitating restrictions on the habeas corpus process, making it more difficult than ever for ineffective assistance of counsel claimants to prevail on a federal habeas claim. Paired with the growing restrictions placed on the criminal appellate process, both by the states and by the Supreme Court, these decisions make it near-impossible for many criminal defendants to challenge their convictions and guarantee their rights.

The decision not to guarantee counsel at the state habeas level is grounded in logic that predated these restrictions. The state habeas hearing …

The Use Of Virtual Technology In Federal Criminal Detention Proceedings During Covid-19, The Honorable Karen Wells Roby Apr 2024

The Use Of Virtual Technology In Federal Criminal Detention Proceedings During Covid-19, The Honorable Karen Wells Roby

Georgia Criminal Law Review

The COVID Pandemic presented unparalleled challenges to court operations and the administration of pretrial criminal proceedings. The combination of health concerns and constitutional considerations collided in a way requiring unprecedented creativity in court operations. While scholars have given guidance on how the state courts were functioning during the pandemic, researchers have not conducted an empirical analysis on how federal courts conducted pretrial detention hearings during COVID-19.

This analysis reports the results of both qualitative and empirical findings pretrial detention hearings in federal courts during COVID-19. I examined the state of operations of the district court in several the Fourth, Fifth, …

"Hired Guns": Establishing The Scope Of The Proper Cross-Examination And Argument Relating To Expert Witness' Compensation In Criminal Trials, Michael C. Kovac Apr 2024

"Hired Guns": Establishing The Scope Of The Proper Cross-Examination And Argument Relating To Expert Witness' Compensation In Criminal Trials, Michael C. Kovac

Georgia Criminal Law Review

The outcomes of criminal cases can turn on the credibility of the parties’ expert witnesses. The compensation such experts receive in exchange for their work on cases can undermine their credibility, as it provides the experts with a financial incentive that might bias them in favor of the parties who retain them. While concerns with such bias have existed for decades, courts have been inconsistent in the defining the permissible scope of cross-examination and argument on the issue. Some courts have unduly curtailed such cross-examination and argument. Courts have also been inconsistent in their views of whether calling such expert …

Synthesis, Characterization And Biologcal Evaluation Of Safranal-Loaded Metalorganic Framework Nanostructures, Alia Musabbeh Alkaabi

Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses

Liver cancer remains a primary worldwide health concern, necessitating the development of innovative and effective treatment options. In this study, we present a biocompatible iron-based metal-organic framework (Fe-MOF) consisting of iron ligands connected by terephthalate linkers loaded with safranal, a natural biomolecule extracted from stigmas of Crocus Sativus flower (also known as saffron), a therapeutic intervention with dual efficiency. This compound not only meets the demand for improved liver cancer therapies but also exhibits antibacterial properties against Escherichia coli and Lactobacillus. The synthesis stage of the study focuses on preparing MIL-88B(Fe) and loading safranal into/onto its structure. The material's composition …

Prevalence And Risk Factors Of Hikikomori In Young Adults In The Middle East, Harshil Paresh Shah Apr 2024

Prevalence And Risk Factors Of Hikikomori In Young Adults In The Middle East, Harshil Paresh Shah

Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses

Hikikomori, a form of severe social withdrawal that can occur without the presence of any other psychological disorder, was once thought to be a Japanese culture-bound phenomena. However, studies have emerged from several parts of the world showing that this may be a global issue. Extant literature suggests associations between hikikomori and behavioral addictions such as gaming addiction and problematic social media use (PSMU). Since there is a relative paucity of research examining this phenomenon in the Middle Eastern context, this study aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors of hikikomori in young adults of the Middle East. It …

Fda Investigational New Drug (Ind) Applications, Cassandra Taylor Apr 2024

Fda Investigational New Drug (Ind) Applications, Cassandra Taylor

Oxford ICSB

Current Federal law requires that a drug be the subject of an approved marketing application before it is transported or distributed across state lines. Because a sponsor will probably want to ship the investigational drug to clinical investigators in many states, it must seek an exemption from that legal requirement. The IND is the means through which the sponsor technically obtains this exemption from the FDA. During a new drug's early preclinical development, the sponsor's primary goal is to determine if the product is reasonably safe for initial use in humans, and if the compound exhibits pharmacological activity that justifies …

Partake Or Be Departed: Insularity Of Setting Within The Dystopian Imagination And The Mark: The Beast Rules The World, Andrew Watkins Apr 2024

Partake Or Be Departed: Insularity Of Setting Within The Dystopian Imagination And The Mark: The Beast Rules The World, Andrew Watkins

Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research

Insularity of setting within the dystopia is a motif that is shared between works of dystopian fiction and works in the utopian imagination as a whole. Each dystopia or utopia is unique in how it creates and uses insularity of setting to facilitate the confinement of its subjected society to a prescribed set of social, political, religious, and economic practices. Timothy LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins use the framework of rapture fiction and the motif of insularity of setting to create an international dystopia in their novel The Mark: The Beast Rules the World. The global insularity conceived within The …

Yayoi Kusama’S Depictions Of Mental Health, Anna Isabel Davis Apr 2024

Yayoi Kusama’S Depictions Of Mental Health, Anna Isabel Davis

Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research

This paper examines Yayoi Kusama’s usage of art as a coping mechanism for her mental illness, particularly through her pumpkins and “nets” motifs. It involves a close analysis of three artworks to emphasize this motif: her first depiction of pumpkins; “nets”; and, finally, her combination of both pumpkins and “nets” into one artwork. Her theme of repetitions as meditative force is evident in each of these works. As such, this paper posits that the goal of her art is not to heal from her mental illness but to better cope and adapt. This research draws on various primary sources, including …

The Roycean Communal Ideal In T. S. Eliot's “The Love Song Of J. Alfred Prufrock”, Micah Gill Apr 2024

The Roycean Communal Ideal In T. S. Eliot's “The Love Song Of J. Alfred Prufrock”, Micah Gill

Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research

T. S. Eliot’s poem “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” has often been read as a thoroughly cynical assessment of the modern individual and community. This totalizing portrayal misses the poem’s ability to serve as a foil to a more ideal community. If Eliot is so ill-disposed to the timid, fragile Prufrock and his shallow, ostentatious social network, then Eliot must believe in the essence of a better community. We may look to one of Eliot’s intellectual mentors, Josiah Royce, for his philosophy of community, which stands as an ideal inverse in relation to the Prufrockian community. After examining …

Effects Of Dissolved Oxygen On Northern Leopard Frog (Lithobates Pipiens) Gastrocnemius Muscle Recruitment And Fatigue, Eva L. Gates, Joseph P. Levri Apr 2024

Effects Of Dissolved Oxygen On Northern Leopard Frog (Lithobates Pipiens) Gastrocnemius Muscle Recruitment And Fatigue, Eva L. Gates, Joseph P. Levri

Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research

Dissolved oxygen levels in aquatic systems have decreased because of temperature increases caused by climate change, which in turn has affected ecosystems and wildlife. Many physiological processes in aquatic organisms require a certain dissolved-oxygen range, and decreasing levels can compromise proper functioning. Previous studies have linked muscle performance to dissolved oxygen levels in a variety of aquatic species, but less research has been dedicated to amphibians. Because many amphibians engage in cutaneous respiration, especially when dwelling in aquatic habitats, dissolved oxygen levels may have a significant impact on muscle performance in this taxon. This experiment investigated the effects of dissolved …

Work-Life Balance In A Medical Unit Of U.S. Army Reservists: An Exploratory Study, Elizabeth A. Kleitz, Madelyn Huhn Apr 2024

Work-Life Balance In A Medical Unit Of U.S. Army Reservists: An Exploratory Study, Elizabeth A. Kleitz, Madelyn Huhn

Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research

Work-family life balance influences employee job satisfaction and quality of life. When work and family life are in balance, employees perform at higher levels and have fewer health problems. U.S. Army Reservists in both civilian and Reserve medical occupations may face work-life balance conflicts from both their full-time/ civilian and part-time/military medical occupations. Army Reservists in a medical unit were surveyed about their work-family life balance behaviors using the Work–Life Climate Scale in an exploratory cross-sectional study. Most reported rarely experiencing work-life conflict behaviors; however, many also reported that they worked late three to seven days of the week. Long …
