Department of Anesthesiology Faculty Papers

The adverse effects of general anesthesia on the long-term cognition of young children and senior adults have become of concern in recent years. Previously, mechanistic and pathogenic investigations focused on neurons, and little is known about the effect of commonly used intravenous anesthetics such as propofol and ketamine on astrocytes. Recently, astrocyte dysfunction has been implicated in a wide range of age-related brain diseases. In this study, we examined the survival and viability of both young and senescent astrocytes in culture after adding propofol and ketamine to the media at varying strengths. Oxidative stimulus was applied to commercially available fetal …

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

Uncontrolled bleeding after trauma represents a substantial clinical problem. The current standard of care to treat bleeding after trauma is transfusion of blood products including platelets; however, donated platelets have a short shelf life, are in limited supply, and carry immunogenicity and contamination risks. Consequently, there is a critical need to develop hemostatic platelet alternatives. To this end, we developed synthetic platelet-like particles (PLPs), formulated by functionalizing highly deformable microgel particles composed of ultralow cross-linked poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) with fibrin-binding ligands. The fibrin-binding ligand was designed to target to wound sites, and the cross-linking of fibrin polymers was designed …

The Perception Of Official Housing Policies For Women With Medically Assisted Treatment, Vickie Lynn Roberson Apr 2024

The Perception Of Official Housing Policies For Women With Medically Assisted Treatment, Vickie Lynn Roberson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Opioid overdose is the leading cause of death among the homeless, with limited access to housing, food, security, and medically assisted treatment (MAT). The women on MAT are affected because they may not be readily accepted into the housing community if considered non-abstinent, unlike other substance users who would not have those problems. There previously had not been research on how housing for women was affected when on MAT or any housing facilities that have established MAT protocol. In this generic qualitative design, 10 female participants on MAT who needed housing were interviewed using semi-structured interviews. Bandura's social learning theory …

Interconnection And Damping Assignment Passivity-Based Control Without Partial Differential Equations, Pablo Borja Apr 2024

Interconnection And Damping Assignment Passivity-Based Control Without Partial Differential Equations, Pablo Borja

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Interconnection and damping assignment (IDA) is a popular passivity-based control (PBC) technique. This nonlinear control approach has proven suitable for stabilizing a wide range of systems. However, like many other nonlinear control techniques, implementing the IDA-PBC approach is often hampered by the necessity of solving partial differential equations (PDEs). This paper studies systems for which the solutions to these equations are always guaranteed, and closed-form solutions are known. To this end, we provide straightforwardly verifiable conditions over the open-loop system such that IDA-PBC can be applied without solving PDEs.

Revitalizing Soil Health For Climate Resilience In Africa: The Need For High Rates Of Carbon Inputs, Idowu A. Atoloye

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

Enhancing soil health is critical to improve crop productivity, fertilizer use efficiency, and resilience to climate change impacts for smallholder farmers in Africa. Increasing the use of mineral fertilizers is critical for achieving higher crop yield and residue return. However, it is crucial to consider the simultaneous use of carbon (C)-rich organic materials alongside mineral fertilizers to support soil health and enhance fertilizer use efficiency. It is proposed that increasing mineral fertilizer use without a concurrent increase in C-rich organic materials may not enhance soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil health in the long term. When the labile pool of …

The seventh iteration of the reference genome assembly for Rattus norvegicus-mRatBN7.2-corrects numerous misplaced segments and reduces base-level errors by approximately 9-fold and increases contiguity by 290-fold compared with its predecessor. Gene annotations are now more complete, improving the mapping precision of genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomics datasets. We jointly analyzed 163 short-read whole-genome sequencing datasets representing 120 laboratory rat strains and substrains using mRatBN7.2. We defined ∼20.0 million sequence variations, of which 18,700 are predicted to potentially impact the function of 6,677 genes. We also generated a new rat genetic map from 1,893 heterogeneous stock rats and annotated transcription start sites …

Several studies have been performed on the immunomodulatory effects of yeast β-(1,3) glucan, but there is no proper evaluation of the thermal and immunomodulating properties of zymosan (ZM). Thermogravimetry analysis indicated a 54% weight loss of ZM at 270 °C. Circular dichroism showed absorption peaks in the region of 250 to 400 nm, suggesting a helical coil β-sheet configuration. XRD showed a broad peak at 2θ of 20.38°, indicating the crystalline nature, and the size was found to be 23 nm. ZM is biocompatible and showed no toxicity against L929 and RAW 264.7 cell lines (cell viability > 90%). Immunomodulatory …

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

This dissertation explores quantum computation using qudits encoded into large spins, emphasizing the concept of quantum co-design to harness the unique capabilities of physical platforms for enhanced quantum information processing. First, we delve into the generation of high-fidelity universal gate sets for quantum computation with qudits. Leveraging principles from quantum optimal control, Rydberg physics, and the atomic structure of alkaline-earth atoms, we propose protocols for high-fidelity universal gate sets in the ground state of 87Sr with reasonable experimental parameters. Next, we analyze schemes to encode a qubit in the large spin qudits for fault-tolerant quantum computation (FTQC). By comprehending …

There have been studies that examined litigation procedures stemming from the management and treatment of various urological issues [6, 8]. Varicocele is a common urologic condition and can be associated with pain, subfertility, and infertility, thus greatly impacting patient well-being and quality of life. It has a prevalence of 15% in the general male population and up to 35% in males with infertility [9]. Varicocele has a range of treatment options, from observation to pain management to surgical correction. To our knowledge, no legal claims database investigation into varicocele cases exists. Elucidating the factors that go into varicocele litigation could …
