Community And Regional Economic Analysis: Unveiling Economic Dynamics With The Location Quotient Method And Beyond, Daniela M. Mattos

Cornhusker Economics

In addition to the Location Quotient analysis, several other economic development analytical tools can contribute valuable insights to investment decisions, such as population-employment ratios and shift-share analysis. The use concomitant of these tools boosts the information provided by the Location Quotient analysis, offering a more holistic perspective. Recognizing that each analytical tool provides only a partial view, it is essential not to rely solely on one method when making investment decisions. Comprehensive decision-making necessitates leveraging multiple tools to gain a more nuanced and accurate understanding of local economies.

Application Of Quality And Patient Safety Principles To Improve Patient Mobility, Sandhyadevi Tagaram, Md Apr 2024

Application Of Quality And Patient Safety Principles To Improve Patient Mobility, Sandhyadevi Tagaram, Md

Master of Science in Healthcare Quality and Safety Capstone Presentations

Decreased patient mobility in hospitals leads to an increased incidence of hospital-associated complications, falls, and delirium, resulting in prolonged post-hospital stays, an increase in patient mortality, morbidity, and rise in healthcare costs and utilization. Our project, UMove to IMPROVE, was piloted in two medical-surgical units in November 2023 to enhance safe patient mobility practices, improve patient flow and reduce hospital-associated complications.

The nursing and PCAs will assess the patient's baseline mobility and their level of assistance at admission and during the shift changes by calculating the activity measure for post-acute care( AMPAC) score. The AMPAC scores are used to assess …

Invasive aspergillosis (IA) is a common and deadly mold infection in immunocompromised patients. As morbidity and mortality of IA are primarily driven by poor immune defense, adjunct immunotherapies, such as chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells, are direly needed. Here, we propose a novel approach to generate Aspergillus fumigatus (AF)-CAR T cells using the single-chain variable fragment domain of monoclonal antibody AF-269-5 and a lentiviral vector system. These cells successfully targeted mature hyphal filaments of representative clinical and reference AF isolates and elicited a potent release of cytotoxic effectors and type 1 T cell cytokines. Furthermore, AF-CAR T cells generated …

Reducing Unnecessary Head Cts In Adult Emergency Department Patients With Head Injuries Through Implementation Of A Provider Training Initiative, Kelli Mcallister, Susannah Sitton Apr 2024

Reducing Unnecessary Head Cts In Adult Emergency Department Patients With Head Injuries Through Implementation Of A Provider Training Initiative, Kelli Mcallister, Susannah Sitton

Group: Samford University Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing

Emergency department (ED) providers often overuse head computed tomography (CT) scans for mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI), driven by patient demand, fear of litigation, and a culture favoring information leading to to increased risks, costs, and wait times. The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project aimed to address this issue at Flowers Hospital and AdventHealth by implementing the Canadian CT Head Rule (CCHR) uniformly by ED providers. Guided by the Iowa Model of evidence-based practice change, the project involved pre-intervention assessments, educational initiatives, and post-intervention evaluations. Pre-intervention, a significant number of CT scans were ordered unnecessarily. Post-intervention, there was a …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The globally distributed marine alga Emiliania huxleyi has cooling effect on the Earth’s climate. The population density of E. huxleyi is restricted by Nucleocytoviricota viruses, including E. huxleyi virus 201 (EhV-201). Despite the impact of E. huxleyi viruses on the climate, there is limited information about their structure and replication. Here, we show that the dsDNA genome inside the EhV-201 virion is protected by an inner membrane, capsid, and outer membrane. EhV-201 virions infect E. huxleyi by using fivefold vertices to bind to and fuse the virus’ inner membrane with the cell plasma membrane. Progeny virions assemble in the cytoplasm …

Framed within Hill-Collins' (2009) Black feminist thought, this study delves into the emergence of the impostor syndrome construct among Black graduate-level women in higher education. Despite the growing literature on impostor syndrome and its consequences across various demographics and sectors, inadequate scholarly attention has been dedicated to comprehending the specific challenges faced by Black women in education. Nine participants enrolled in Master's programs at predominantly White institutions were engaged in this exploration. Consistent with most of the existing literature, findings accentuated the pivotal role of educational attainment for Black women, who consistently outpace other groups. Interviews further unveiled a relentless …

"Great Injustice In American Literature": African American Girlhood In Black And White Authored Children's Publications, 1887-1920, Becca Driggs

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis examines the role of African American girls in creating and dismantling nineteenth-century race myths through a comparison of publications in black and white authored presses. Fictional stories published in St. Nicholas, the most popular turn-of-the-century children’s magazine, reveal that white authors, specifically Southern women, intentionally crafted narratives demeaning African American girls to cement a national racial hierarchy. Their work indoctrinated white children in racism and undermined African American legitimacy in the decades following the Civil War and Reconstruction. Concurrently, black authors recognized these attacks and in their press explored the lived experiences of African American girls to counter …

Limit Theory And Inference In Non-Cointegrated Functional Coefficient Regression, Ying Wang, Yundong Tu, Peter C.B. Phillips Apr 2024

Limit Theory And Inference In Non-Cointegrated Functional Coefficient Regression, Ying Wang, Yundong Tu, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Functional coefficient (FC) cointegrating regressions offer empirical investigators flexibility in modeling economic relationships by introducing covariates that influence the direction and intensity of comovement among nonstationary time series. FC regression models are also useful when formal cointegration is absent, in the sense that the equation errors may themselves be nonstationary, but where the nonstationary series display well-defined FC linkages that can be meaningfully interpreted as correlation measures involving the covariates. The present paper proposes new nonparametric estimators for such FC regression models where the nonstationary series display linkages that enable consistent estimation of the correlation measures between them. Specifically, we …

With college prices and the cost of food increasing, so has the rate of food insecurity among college students. Food insecurity is defined as the lack of availability or access to food to meet someone’s basic and necessary needs. Food insecurity is associated with lower grades, depression, higher perceived stress, and lower graduation rates. Campuses across the country are responding to the problem in a variety of ways, including distribution of food directly to students through food pantries. Meal plans are expensive in the addition to college tuition and housing. The lowest cost for a meal plan at Bowling Green …

Faculty Publications

A large public nursing data set was used to determine whether orientation and/or preceptor programs impact job satisfaction among registered nurses in Maine and Massachusetts. There was no association between orientation and preceptor programs and satisfaction, nor evidence that new nurse status modified the relationship. There is a need for evaluation of orientation and preceptor programs' structure and effectiveness, and innovation is needed in promoting job satisfaction, thereby increasing nurse retention.

Differential Susceptibility To Propofol And Ketamine In Primary Cultures Of Young And Senesced Astrocytes, Liang Huang, Ferit Tuzer, Abigail Murtha, Michael Green, Claudio Torres, Henry Liu, Shadi Malaeb

Department of Anesthesiology Faculty Papers

The adverse effects of general anesthesia on the long-term cognition of young children and senior adults have become of concern in recent years. Previously, mechanistic and pathogenic investigations focused on neurons, and little is known about the effect of commonly used intravenous anesthetics such as propofol and ketamine on astrocytes. Recently, astrocyte dysfunction has been implicated in a wide range of age-related brain diseases. In this study, we examined the survival and viability of both young and senescent astrocytes in culture after adding propofol and ketamine to the media at varying strengths. Oxidative stimulus was applied to commercially available fetal …

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

Uncontrolled bleeding after trauma represents a substantial clinical problem. The current standard of care to treat bleeding after trauma is transfusion of blood products including platelets; however, donated platelets have a short shelf life, are in limited supply, and carry immunogenicity and contamination risks. Consequently, there is a critical need to develop hemostatic platelet alternatives. To this end, we developed synthetic platelet-like particles (PLPs), formulated by functionalizing highly deformable microgel particles composed of ultralow cross-linked poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) with fibrin-binding ligands. The fibrin-binding ligand was designed to target to wound sites, and the cross-linking of fibrin polymers was designed …

The Perception Of Official Housing Policies For Women With Medically Assisted Treatment, Vickie Lynn Roberson Apr 2024

The Perception Of Official Housing Policies For Women With Medically Assisted Treatment, Vickie Lynn Roberson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Opioid overdose is the leading cause of death among the homeless, with limited access to housing, food, security, and medically assisted treatment (MAT). The women on MAT are affected because they may not be readily accepted into the housing community if considered non-abstinent, unlike other substance users who would not have those problems. There previously had not been research on how housing for women was affected when on MAT or any housing facilities that have established MAT protocol. In this generic qualitative design, 10 female participants on MAT who needed housing were interviewed using semi-structured interviews. Bandura's social learning theory …
