General Non-Destructive Evaluation For Friction Stir Welding, Johnathon Bryce Hunt
General Non-Destructive Evaluation For Friction Stir Welding, Johnathon Bryce Hunt
Theses and Dissertations
Friction stir welding (FSW) is an advantageous solid state joining method for many different engineering designs. It was invented in 1991 by TWI and since that time a tremendous amount of research has been executed to understand and implement FSW in a myriad of materials in numerous industries such as aerospace, ship building, train, automotive, energy, agriculture and others. Most industries have strict weld inspection processes to validate a weld before it is put into service. One of the main weld characteristics that is measured is the size of any subsurface volumetric voids. The current standard to test friction stir …

Glass corrosion models that capture the complex mechanisms of the glass-water reaction enable the prediction of nuclear waste glass durability in disposal scenarios. Parameterization of such models is challenging because of the need to capture changes in corrosion behavior with time, reaction conditions, and glass composition. Here, we describe and employ the ILAW (immobilized low-activity waste) glass corrosion model (IGCM) in geochemical simulations of static dissolution tests, at two temperatures (40 °C and 90 °C), for a matrix of 24 enhanced low-activity waste (eLAW) glasses statistically designed to cover a processable composition space defined by 8 major glass components (Al …

It aims to solve the problem that the evacuation state of pedestrians depicted by the traditional social force model in a crowded multiexit scenario has a relatively large difference with the actual state, especially the 'optimal path' considered by the self-driving force is the problem of shortest path, and the multiexit evacuation mode depicted by the 'herd behavior' is the local optimum problem. Through in-depth analysis of actual evacuation data of pedestrians and causes of problem, a new crowd evacuation optimization model is established in order to effectively improve the simulation accuracy of crowd evacuation in a multi-exit environment. The …

Clarice Lispector: From Brazil To The World, Earl Fitz
Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures
Clarice Lispector: From Brazil to the World explains why the Brazilian master was so transformative of modern Brazilian literature and why she has become such a celebrity in the world literature arena. This book also shows why Lispector is not one writer, as many think, but many writers. By offering close readings of her novels, stories, and nonfiction pieces, Earl E. Fitz shows the diverse sides of her literary world. Chapters cover Lispector’s devotion to language and its connection to identity; her political engagement; and her humor, eroticism, and struggle with the concept of God. The last chapter seeks to …

Finite Rigid Sets In Sphere Complexes, Edgar A. Bering, Christopher J. Leininger
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
A subcomplex X≤C of a simplicial complex is strongly rigid if every locally injective, simplicial map X→C is the restriction of a unique automorphism of C. Aramayona and the second author proved that the curve complex of an orientable surface can be exhausted by finite strongly rigid sets. The Hatcher sphere complex is an analog of the curve complex for isotopy classes of essential spheres in a connect sum of n copies of S1×S2. We show that there is an exhaustion of the sphere complex by finite strongly rigid sets for all n≥3 and that when n=2 the sphere complex …

In this study, bio-derived natural agar powder was used as an electrocatalyst for application as an electrode in all‑vanadium redox flow batteries. Different concentrations of agar solution were tested, and cyclic voltammetry studies confirmed that agar loaded felts have good catalytic activity toward both redox couples V4+/V5+ at the positive and V2+/V3+ at the negative side. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy demonstrated the presence of higher amount of oxygen-functional groups on the surface of the fibers. Contact angle measurements demonstrated an enormous increase in hydrophilicity of the felts treated with agar. Long-term charge/discharge profiles revealed 6 % …

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Decarbonizing the building sector is key to meet the EU climate goals by 2050. Although the recent policies recognized the importance of on-site solar energy production in the energy transition, there are only a few modelling studies analyzing how much the gap between the technically possible and policy-driven power generation of rooftop photovoltaic (PV) panels can be reduced. This study, therefore, uses geospatial techniques and the high-resolution Building Integrated Solar Energy (BISE) supply model to estimate the main spatial and temporal characteristics of the rooftop PV energy production potential. To support decision-making, important implications of the Solar Rooftop Initiative action …

Kimmel Cancer Center Faculty Papers
Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most frequent form of thyroid cancer. PTC commonly presents with mutations of the serine/threonine kinase BRAF (BRAFV600E), which drive ERK1/2 pathway activation to support growth and suppress apoptosis. PTC patients often undergo surgical resection; however, since the average age of PTC patients is under 50, adverse effects associated with prolonged maintenance therapy following total thyroidectomy are a concern. The development of mutant-selective BRAF inhibitors (BRAFi), like vemurafenib, has been efficacious in patients with metastatic melanoma, but the response rate is low for mutant BRAF PTC patients. Here, we assay the therapeutic response …
On Learning Your Gender: A Comprehensive View, Audra M. Hazelwood
On Learning Your Gender: A Comprehensive View, Audra M. Hazelwood
Theses
This essay provides a metaphysical and epistemological account of gender. The metaphysics involves a ‘non-reductionist view of gender’, which is to say that gender cannot be reduced to a single factor. On this view gender begins with one’s innate gender inclinations (in the vein of Julia Serano). These inclinations pick out a specific range of gender possibilities from the gender spectrum that apply to a person. At the same time we live in communities and cultures with certain gender norms. This is where epistemology comes into play since our gender inclinations are filtered through gender norms and some people are …
Friction Stir Welding Of Tube-To-Tubesheet And Spot Joints For Virgin And Recycled Thermoplastic Materials., Syed Haris Iftikhar
Friction Stir Welding Of Tube-To-Tubesheet And Spot Joints For Virgin And Recycled Thermoplastic Materials., Syed Haris Iftikhar
Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses
Thermoplastic materials are becoming popular, due to their chemically inert and anti-fouling properties, for use in industrial heat exchanger applications involving heating/cooling of highly reactive fluids like acids. A novel nonconventional joining framework, based on the friction stir welding (FSW) technique, is developed to create high-quality thermoplastic tube-to-tubesheet joints (TTJs). The proposed technique has applications in the thermoplastic shell-andtube heat exchanger and piping industries (as flange-to-pipe joints). The primary objective is to study the feasibility of the FSW technique for developing thermoplastic TTJs, followed by optimization of the process parameters and detailed material characterizations. This work used workpieces (tube, tubesheet) …

Institute on Disability
Many People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) also have mental health needs requiring the support of mental health service providers, yet they may experience barriers to full engagement in their care due to ableism. Ableism is a kind of prejudice that impacts People with IDD in many parts of life, even in mental health care. This article proposes how an adapted Patient Reported Experience Measure (PREM) can be a response to ableism, with an impact at three distinct yet interrelated levels that reflect the parties involved in the mental healthcare of People with IDD-MH: provider, caregiver, and patient.

Chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) involves recurrent, pruritic wheals lasting more than 6 weeks in response to various etiologies, including unknown causality. Though most cutaneous reactions to the COVID-19 vaccine series are self-limited and of short duration, more complex presentations including chronic spontaneous urticaria have been described. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of chronic spontaneous urticaria following heterologous mRNA COVID-19 booster vaccination that includes vaccination with both forms of the mRNA vaccine. Our patient received Pfizer-BioNTech for the primary series and Moderna for the booster. After failing several therapies, our patient's urticaria was refractory even …

The landlord sued the tenant for non-payment of rent, but the court dismissed the case because the landlord's demand for rent was based on an invalid lease agreement. The court ruled that a non-payment proceeding requires a valid agreement, express or implied, to pay the rent demanded and that the rent demand must specify the exact amount owed for each period.

Microcapsule Transport And Blockage In Rough-Walled Fractures, Brittney Diana Seaburn
Civil Engineering ETDs
Thermal short-circuiting is a potential problem for Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS). One solution to this problem is to reduce the permeability of very conductive fractures with thermally degradable microcapsules carrying porous polymers that bond to rock, reducing fluid flow without completely sealing the fracture. This concept requires microcapsules to principally travel in the larger, problematic fractures, minimizing entry into smaller fractures; consequently, understanding the transport and blockage of microcapsules is critical. Using a flow visualization configuration, this study involved quantifying the transport and blockage of microcapsules in transparent fracture replicas. Analyses determined most blockage occurred in regions with local apertures …
