From Pumps And Pipes To Data And Discovery: Unifying A New Division, Jeremy Myntti, Megan Mcmillan
Faculty Publications
A reorganization of the Brigham Young University Library in 2020 brought many changes to the library, including the formation of the Metadata and Information Technology (MIT) Division. This new division needed to define a vision for itself, encourage a sense of unity among its employees, and foster collaboration among those employees. This article details how the MIT Division created a Data and Discovery initiative based on the Pumps and Pipes collaboration model, a model which brings seemingly unrelated industries together to discover solutions to their respective challenges by exploring “their neighbor’s toolbox” (Pumps and Pipes, n.d., “What We Do”). Avoidant Attachment, Coping Styles, And Body Image In Adults With Trichophagia And Onychophagia Disorders, Maryam Mehrtash
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The purpose of this quantitative research was to study the relationship between avoidant attachment, coping styles, and body image in adults with trichophagia and onychophagia disorders. The repeated failed attempts of patients to reduce or stop their compulsive behavior persist as a significant health concern for clinicians and researchers alike. Previous literature indicated that a lack of recognition of the underlying mental illness in these conditions exists and may be due to the absence of individualized treatment. Attachment theory, proposed in this study, integrates psychosocial and neurobiological factors to examine this study’s therapeutic constructs. Sixty-seven adults with trichophagia (N= 50) …

An Exploration Of The Effectiveness Of Xanthorrhiza Simplicissima And Its Secondary Alkaloids As Antibiotics Against Staphylococcus Aureus With The Use Of Reserpine, Donald Bothe, Savita Chaurasia
Undergraduate Theses
Xanthorhiza simplicissima is a plant that is steeped in medical history. It has been used for hundreds of years by the Native Americans, and later by the Europeans, of Appalachia for its medicinal properties. One of the most useful medical applications of this plant are its antibiotic properties, as typified by its use as a tea that was consumed to treat mouth sores. These antibiotic properties can be attributed to some of its secondary alkaloids such as berberine, liriodenine, oxyacanthine, and magnoflorine. These compounds have been studied in other systems; however, oxyacanthine and magnoflorine have not been researched in tandem …

Indigenization Of Postsecondary Education Applied Learning Curriculum Development, Gabriel Y. Chung
The Dissertation in Practice at Western University
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s (2015) Calls to Action have awoken Canadian society to the reconciliation. Although there is a growing body of knowledge on the individual topics of Indigenous education, knowledge, and leadership, there is relatively little research bringing together these topics in curriculum development practices in a postsecondary education skilled learning context. My problem of practice (PoP) is one that strives to address a low enrolment of Indigenous adult learners and lower positive outcomes from skilled training programs. Situating this problem from my perspectives as a Canadian-born visible minority Settler on Turtle Island and postsecondary education …

Data-driven model development brings new approaches to solve conventional civil engineering problems, which are usually considered and answered by experimental, analytical, and numerical methods. This study aims to develop an ensemble learning model (i.e., XGBoost: eXtreme Gradient Boosting) to predict ultimate moment of reinforced concrete (RC) members strengthened by a newly developed concrete technology – ultrahigh performance concrete (UHPC). The study considered two scenarios, incorporating eighteen and seventeen features, with one feature modification involving the transformation of width and height to the cross-sectional area of RC members. Incorporating three substrate damage levels, two substrate surface treatments preceding UHPC strengthening, and …
Electrodeposition Of Gadolinium Metal Thin Films For Neutron Phase Contrast Imaging, Mary Louise Gucik
Electrodeposition Of Gadolinium Metal Thin Films For Neutron Phase Contrast Imaging, Mary Louise Gucik
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
A rare earth metal, gadolinium has unique magnetic properties and the largest neutron absorption cross section making it highly sought after in emerging technology. However, unlike most metals, it is difficult to work with and lacks a damascene process. When incorporated into alloys, gadolinium’s properties are muted and the film thickness must increase to account for the low concentration. Gadolinium metal films have been deposited successfully through sputter coating, but these films have density deficiencies and are limited to line-of-sight substrates. In this work, the deposition of gadolinium metal thin films was investigated for use on complex geometries via electrophoretic …

Decoding Crystallization Behavior Of Aluminoborosilicate Glasses: From Structural Descriptors To Quantitative Structure – Property Relationship (Qspr) Based Predictive Models, Yingcheng Zhang, Marco Bertani, Alfonso Pedone, Randall E. Youngman, Gregory Tricot, Aditya Kumar, Ashutosh Goel
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Successful decoding of structural descriptors controlling the crystallization in multicomponent functional glasses can pave the way for the transition from the trial-and-error approach and empirical modeling for glass/glass-ceramic composition design toward more rational and scientifically rigorous Quantitative Structure-Property Relationship (QSPR) based models. However, due to the compositional and structural complexity of multicomponent glasses and the longer time and length scales associated with nucleation, the development and validation of QSPR models are still in it's infancy. The work presented in the article is an attempt to leap forward in this pursuit by combining the strengths of experimental and computational materials science …

Quantum Search Algorithms For Constraint Satisfaction And Optimization Problems Using Grover's Search And Quantum Walk Algorithms With Advanced Oracle Design, Abdirahman Sheikh Hassan Alasow
Dissertations and Theses
The field of quantum computing has emerged as a powerful tool for solving and optimizing combinatorial optimization problems. To solve many real-world problems with many variables and possible solutions for constraint satisfaction and optimization problems, the required number of qubits of scalable hardware for quantum computing is the bottleneck in the current generation of quantum computers. In this dissertation, we will demonstrate advanced, scalable building blocks for the quantum search algorithms that have been implemented in Grover's search algorithm and the quantum walk algorithm. The scalable building blocks are used to reduce the required number of qubits in the design. …
Adaptive Sampling For Seabed Identification From Ambient Acoustic Noise, Matthew Sullivan
Adaptive Sampling For Seabed Identification From Ambient Acoustic Noise, Matthew Sullivan
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis discusses distinguishing geoacoustic properties of seabeds by adaptively sampling ambient acoustic measurements using an autonomous underwater vehicle. Modern advancements in seabed characterization motivate an online method for distinguishing between two seabed types using Fourier transformed ambient acoustic noise snapshots. These snapshots are assumed to be associated with their spatial location and seabed, making the goal to organize unlabeled seabed locations. The snapshots are transformed to obtain pairwise similarities between locations. Locations with similarities exceeding a threshold are classified together with the goal of identifying all locations with similarities below this threshold using a process known as level set …

On February 19th Capital One announced that it was buying Discover for $35.3 billion. If approved, this acquisition would make Capital One the United States’ sixth largest bank and its third largest credit-card issuer. However, many have voiced concerns with this deal. Senators from both sides of the aisle have called on the Federal Trade Commission (“FTC”) to block this transaction as a violation of antitrust law. Senator Hawley from Missouri said that “[i]f consummated, this merger will create a new juggernaut in the credit card market, with unprecedented powers to extort American consumers," while Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts …

Significance and Background: Violence against healthcare workers is an international issue. The rates of workplace violence (WPV) have been steadily increasing over the last few years. The practice setting implemented the use of the Brøset Violence Checklist (BVC) system-wide in July 2022, following the Joint Commission’s new standards for WPV prevention. The BVC is a checklist of six behaviors (confusion, irritability, boisterousness, physical threats, verbal threats, and attacking objects) that the nurses score as a 1 (present) or 0 (absent), and the higher the sum of the scores the greater the risk of violence. A score of three or greater …

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a type of blood cancer of the myeloid cell lineage. Obesity is characterized by an increase in body weight that results in excessive fat accumulation. Obesity has been associated with an increased incidence of many cancers, including blood cancers. This study evaluated the role obesity in AML progression in a novel transgenic mouse model developed by crossing Flt3ITD mice with Lepob/ob mice. Leukemia burden was augmented in obese AML mice. In addition, it was determined that obesity upregulated the ceramide-mediated and ceramide-1-phosphate-mediated NADPH oxidase 2 (NOX2). Notably, increased oxidative pathways has been attributed to disease …

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Using 𝑞-calculus we study a family of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces which interpolate between the Hardy space and the Fock space. We give characterizations of these spaces in terms of classical operators such as integration and backward-shift operators, and their 𝑞-calculus counterparts. Furthermore, these new spaces allow us to study intertwining operators between classic backward-shift operators and the q-Jackson derivative.
