Avoidant Attachment, Coping Styles, And Body Image In Adults With Trichophagia And Onychophagia Disorders, Maryam Mehrtash Apr 2024

Avoidant Attachment, Coping Styles, And Body Image In Adults With Trichophagia And Onychophagia Disorders, Maryam Mehrtash

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The purpose of this quantitative research was to study the relationship between avoidant attachment, coping styles, and body image in adults with trichophagia and onychophagia disorders. The repeated failed attempts of patients to reduce or stop their compulsive behavior persist as a significant health concern for clinicians and researchers alike. Previous literature indicated that a lack of recognition of the underlying mental illness in these conditions exists and may be due to the absence of individualized treatment. Attachment theory, proposed in this study, integrates psychosocial and neurobiological factors to examine this study’s therapeutic constructs. Sixty-seven adults with trichophagia (N= 50) …

Experiences Of Early Childhood Leaders In U.S. Nature-Based Learning Programs, Dr. Kristina Henrika Atler Apr 2024

Experiences Of Early Childhood Leaders In U.S. Nature-Based Learning Programs, Dr. Kristina Henrika Atler

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

There are several benefits of nature-based learning (NBL), and participation in NBL supports developmental outcomes, especially in early childhood education; however, there was little research on how to successfully implement NBL. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the experiences of early childhood NBL leaders as they initiated and maintained NBL programs in the United States. The conceptual framework comprised elements of experiential learning theory, Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory, and place-based learning theory. Data were captured through interviews with 14 early childhood leaders (ECLs), observations of six learning spaces, and site-based document analysis. Data were transcribed, coded, …

An Exploration Of The Effectiveness Of Xanthorrhiza Simplicissima And Its Secondary Alkaloids As Antibiotics Against Staphylococcus Aureus With The Use Of Reserpine, Donald Bothe, Savita Chaurasia Apr 2024

An Exploration Of The Effectiveness Of Xanthorrhiza Simplicissima And Its Secondary Alkaloids As Antibiotics Against Staphylococcus Aureus With The Use Of Reserpine, Donald Bothe, Savita Chaurasia

Undergraduate Theses

Xanthorhiza simplicissima is a plant that is steeped in medical history. It has been used for hundreds of years by the Native Americans, and later by the Europeans, of Appalachia for its medicinal properties. One of the most useful medical applications of this plant are its antibiotic properties, as typified by its use as a tea that was consumed to treat mouth sores. These antibiotic properties can be attributed to some of its secondary alkaloids such as berberine, liriodenine, oxyacanthine, and magnoflorine. These compounds have been studied in other systems; however, oxyacanthine and magnoflorine have not been researched in tandem …

Indigenization Of Postsecondary Education Applied Learning Curriculum Development, Gabriel Y. Chung Apr 2024

Indigenization Of Postsecondary Education Applied Learning Curriculum Development, Gabriel Y. Chung

The Dissertation in Practice at Western University

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s (2015) Calls to Action have awoken Canadian society to the reconciliation. Although there is a growing body of knowledge on the individual topics of Indigenous education, knowledge, and leadership, there is relatively little research bringing together these topics in curriculum development practices in a postsecondary education skilled learning context. My problem of practice (PoP) is one that strives to address a low enrolment of Indigenous adult learners and lower positive outcomes from skilled training programs. Situating this problem from my perspectives as a Canadian-born visible minority Settler on Turtle Island and postsecondary education …

Adr And Capital One’S Acquisition Of Discover, Yakov Schwalb

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution (CJCR) Blog

On February 19th Capital One announced that it was buying Discover for $35.3 billion. If approved, this acquisition would make Capital One the United States’ sixth largest bank and its third largest credit-card issuer. However, many have voiced concerns with this deal. Senators from both sides of the aisle have called on the Federal Trade Commission (“FTC”) to block this transaction as a violation of antitrust law. Senator Hawley from Missouri said that “[i]f consummated, this merger will create a new juggernaut in the credit card market, with unprecedented powers to extort American consumers," while Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts …

Eco-Efficient Coatings For Healthy Indoors: Ozone Deposition Velocities, Primary And Secondary Emissions, Alessandra Ranesi, Paulina Faria, M. Rosario Veiga, Elliott T. Gall

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and ozone (O3) are harmful pollutants present in indoor air. Indoor concentrations of VOCs are typically higher than outdoors, due to the presence of indoor sources like building materials and ozone-surface reactions. The study aims to identify and quantify the ozone reactivity and primary and secondary emissions of different indoor coatings. The coatings selected for the study were three gypsum-based plastering mortar, with and without the addition of a bio-waste from Acacia dealbata (raw bark, BA, and bark heated at 250°C, BA250), two clay plasters (one with sand and the other with seashells as additional aggregate), …

Investigating Software Application Use In Secondary Physical Education, Sean Fullerton Apr 2024

Investigating Software Application Use In Secondary Physical Education, Sean Fullerton

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

The first study explored secondary physical education teachers’ acceptance and use of a supplemental software application, PLT4M (“Plat-form”). The study was an exploratory cross-sectional mixed methods study guided by the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology. Quantitative results showed that performance expectancy, attitude toward use, and price value significantly predicted PE teachers’ behavior intention to use PLT4M. Qualitative data revealed the following themes regarding teachers’ use: (1) differentiation and modifications; (2) accessibility; (3) limitations and challenges. The second study was a descriptive case study design that applied Activity Theory to examine how one high school PE program uses …

The Wyandot Of Anderdon Nation: Meaning-Making, Constructing, And Affirming Their Tribal Identities Through Archiving Historical Documents, Elizabeth Ann Berton Reilly Apr 2024

The Wyandot Of Anderdon Nation: Meaning-Making, Constructing, And Affirming Their Tribal Identities Through Archiving Historical Documents, Elizabeth Ann Berton Reilly

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

This qualitative study examines how the Wyandot of Anderdon Nation makes meaning, constructs, and affirms their tribal identity. This tribe is a non-federally recognized community in Michigan.

This study employed an Etuaptmumk/Two-Eyed Seeing framework, combining Critical Indigenous Research Methodology with a narrative one. I investigated how they preserve their language and culture and what that means to them. This led to an exploration into mixed-race Indigenous identities, how archiving and genealogical and tribal historical knowledge tie into creating and affirming personal identity.

This study demonstrated that there are many ways to be Wyandot and that each interviewee makes meaning, constructs, …

Implementing Directed Security Rounding With The Brøset Violence Checklist: A Quality Improvement Project, Jacqueline Ortiz Apr 2024

Implementing Directed Security Rounding With The Brøset Violence Checklist: A Quality Improvement Project, Jacqueline Ortiz

DNP Projects

Significance and Background: Violence against healthcare workers is an international issue. The rates of workplace violence (WPV) have been steadily increasing over the last few years. The practice setting implemented the use of the Brøset Violence Checklist (BVC) system-wide in July 2022, following the Joint Commission’s new standards for WPV prevention. The BVC is a checklist of six behaviors (confusion, irritability, boisterousness, physical threats, verbal threats, and attacking objects) that the nurses score as a 1 (present) or 0 (absent), and the higher the sum of the scores the greater the risk of violence. A score of three or greater …

Faculty, Staff, and Students

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a type of blood cancer of the myeloid cell lineage. Obesity is characterized by an increase in body weight that results in excessive fat accumulation. Obesity has been associated with an increased incidence of many cancers, including blood cancers. This study evaluated the role obesity in AML progression in a novel transgenic mouse model developed by crossing Flt3ITD mice with Lepob/ob mice. Leukemia burden was augmented in obese AML mice. In addition, it was determined that obesity upregulated the ceramide-mediated and ceramide-1-phosphate-mediated NADPH oxidase 2 (NOX2). Notably, increased oxidative pathways has been attributed to disease …
