Illegal Small-Scale Gold Mining In Ghana: A Public Health Perspective., Raymond Yovelanyine Suonyir Apr 2024

Illegal Small-Scale Gold Mining In Ghana: A Public Health Perspective., Raymond Yovelanyine Suonyir

Liberty University Research Week

Illegal small-scale mining popularly called “galamsey” in Ghana involves the practice of illicit mining and extracting gold from the surface or below the soil usually through unregulated methods such as the use of dangerous chemicals. Though this practice has been a major source of livelihood for many rural families in Ghana, it is associated with adverse outcomes such as water pollution, environmental degradation, ecological disturbance, and general environmental pollution. There is a paucity of literature that specifically targets the effects of illegal small-scale mining on public health. This study seeks to explore the consequences of small-scale mining as a public …

Appalachian Mountain Religion, Andrea Stamper Apr 2024

Appalachian Mountain Religion, Andrea Stamper

Liberty University Research Week

The Southern Appalachian Mountains are steeped with deeply held, and individually personal, religious beliefs. The diverse influences upon the region during their settlement have blurred the lines between folklore, Christianity, and other belief systems. This research uses primary and secondary sources to identify how those cultural beliefs have become infused into mountain religion and what makes the various denominational churches of the region reflect each other and their cultural identity more than their broader national conventions. Settlers brought forms of Christianity with them into the mountains, but it did not look like the Christianity that had developed in the colonies. …

Gender Bias And Children’S Literature: Understanding Natural Gender Language And Grammatical Gender Language Within Gender Development, Kaleigh Smolinski Apr 2024

Gender Bias And Children’S Literature: Understanding Natural Gender Language And Grammatical Gender Language Within Gender Development, Kaleigh Smolinski

Liberty University Research Week

The purpose of this research is to understand how gender bias is developed through language. Gender is represented within the human language in different forms such as in nouns, verbs, and/or pronouns that represent female and/or male versions of certain words (DeFranza et al., 2020). Each language consists of a degree of gendered language which is grammatical gender language, natural gender language, a combination of grammatical gender and natural gender, and genderless language (Prewitt-Freilino et al., 2012). This quantitative content analysis approach aims to understand how gender biases are represented in children’s literature in both grammatical gender language and natural …

Knocking Down Walls: Uncovering The Story Of School Integration In Warren County, Virginia, Cherith Bradshaw Apr 2024

Knocking Down Walls: Uncovering The Story Of School Integration In Warren County, Virginia, Cherith Bradshaw

Liberty University Research Week

Brown v. Board of Education is a Supreme Court case that marked the beginning of the end of systematic segregation in the United States. The landmark decision of 1954 sparked feelings of hopeful anticipation for some Virginians, and outrage in others. Consequently, the Massive Resistance movement gained traction as an attempt to halt school integration. Public schools across Virginia began closing their doors to avoid desegregation. In response, brave African American students filed lawsuits against their school districts. The legal process was lengthy and messy in areas of Virginia like Warren County. The literature on Brown v. Board and the …

Gamified Ungrading: Playing With Andragogy And Feminist Instructional Design, Stefani Boutelier Apr 2024

Gamified Ungrading: Playing With Andragogy And Feminist Instructional Design, Stefani Boutelier

Feminist Pedagogy

This article explored an original graduate-level teaching activity of gamification and ungrading through a feminist instructional design lens. We can understand outcomes of gamified equitable grading experiences by de-centering adult interpretations and habits of colonial educational structures–not only for the learners but as current and future leaders. These strategies were evaluated with student self-evaluations, feedback loops, and reflexivity through modeling and co-reflection. The outcomes and potential for replication of a gamified ungrading experience bring forward a humanized curriculum for all levels of learners and designers.

Teaching Citation Politics Through Literature Review Topographies: Towards Cultivating Relational Writing Practices, Mairi Mcdermott Apr 2024

Teaching Citation Politics Through Literature Review Topographies: Towards Cultivating Relational Writing Practices, Mairi Mcdermott

Feminist Pedagogy

Feminism teaches how power works and circulates through our often-unquestioned everyday practices. Since becoming a professor, I have committed myself to this feminist teaching by demystifying--and reimagining--habituated practices, relations, and expectations in higher education that produce and are produced through cis-hetero-patriarchal capitalist White supremacy. Since literature reviews and citation practices are core materials scholars work with, I invite doctoral students to consider different ways these materials can be engaged in efforts to craft transgressive knowledges and worlds through our research. In this article, I describe an assignment designed to disrupt hegemonic patriarchal inheritances in the conventions of writing literature reviews …

Turning Theory Into Practice: An Application Of Queer Family Theory For Graduate Students, Shawn N. Mendez, Samuel H. Allen Apr 2024

Turning Theory Into Practice: An Application Of Queer Family Theory For Graduate Students, Shawn N. Mendez, Samuel H. Allen

Feminist Pedagogy

This paper describes an original teaching activity for instructors of graduate students. Leveraging a critical, transformative, and intersectional pedagogical perspective applied to graduate education, this paper prepares instructors to effectively teach queer theory through an application of the Hegemonic Heteronormativity (HH) model, introduced by Allen and Mendez in 2018. The HH model identifies heteronormativity as a pervasive, three-pronged hegemony, each of which shifts and changes intersectionally and over time. The three-part assignment described in this paper asks students to read the Hegemonic Heteronormativity manuscript independently before reviewing the model with instructor facilitation. Then, students apply the model to real-life examples …

It’S Not On The Syllabus: The Case For Policy Writing In Modern Graduate Education, Andrea N. Hunt Apr 2024

It’S Not On The Syllabus: The Case For Policy Writing In Modern Graduate Education, Andrea N. Hunt

Feminist Pedagogy

Graduate students gain experience in a variety with different forms of writing while completing their studies; however, policy writing is less common although it is applicable to a variety of disciplines. Policy writing is an extension of theory and needs to be approached from a feminist perspective. Policy writing can be conceptualized as a critical feminist praxis where graduate students use their disciplinary skills in more applied work to engage in important conversations related to their field of study. This article provides some strategies for policy writing for graduate students that use existing skills such as forming arguments and applying …

Breaking The Fourth Wall: Co-Constructing Evaluative Practices In The Graduate Methods Classroom, Kelly W. Guyotte, Carlson H. Coogler Apr 2024

Breaking The Fourth Wall: Co-Constructing Evaluative Practices In The Graduate Methods Classroom, Kelly W. Guyotte, Carlson H. Coogler

Feminist Pedagogy

This article centers on the authors' experiences co-teaching a semester-long qualitative ABR course by exploring a pedagogical practice implemented by Kelly—the co-construction of an evaluation rubric between teacher and student. We focus on this practice in particular because we believe it is uniquely situated for graduate student teaching. Typically, instructors develop course assessments on their own, establishing their own criteria for what should be included within an assignment. Students, then, refer to rubrics as they compose their assignments ensuring they ‘meet’ or ‘exceed’ the articulated criteria, with little opportunity to provide feedback on how their work is evaluated. Breaking the …

Dylan Andrews - The Vigilante, Heather Roberson

Liberty University Research Week

The proposal for this artwork was to take the fundamental principles taught in Sculpting I in terms of character sculpting, experiment, and taking it a step further. As the characters in class were based on ourselves as models, I wanted to take the information that I learned to bring a different character to life, as well as experiment with firing the sculpture and painting it. My initial vision remained very consistent with the sketches and ideas I had as this character was one I had been creating for a long time. This sculpture was extremely fun to work on as …

Increasing The Phytoremediation Efficiency Of Heavy Metal-Contaminated Soils In The Uae Using Endophytic Actinobacteria For Sustainable Agriculture, Archana Mathew Mathai

Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses

Pollution caused by heavy metals (HMs) is a major environmental concern worldwide. Human actions, agriculture practices and industrial activities can cause the release of HMs into the environment. Soil contamination with HMs may have negative effects on crops, thus disrupting the food chain and posing risks to human health. Lead (Pb) is a common pollutant found in soils when at high concentrations. Conventional land remediation techniques depending on chemical and mechanical methods are quite expensive and would lead to long-term deterioration of the ecosystems. Phytoremediation can serve as an alternative, eco-friendly approach to restore the lands for agricultural purposes. Hyperaccumulator …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Results from a series of six comparative lamb grazing trials with temperate forages are summarised, and compared with results from the literature. Condensed tannin (CT) concentrations in the diet ranged from 0.12% to 0.47% on a dry matter (DM) basis. Values were generally similar for Yorkshire fog (Holcus lanatus), perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and annual ryegrass (L. multiflorum), each grown with white clover (Trifolium repens), in similar circumstances. Concentrations for tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea)/white clover pastures were relatively low, but may have been artefacts. Drenching with polyethylene glycol (PEG) to bind …

Tannin Contents Of Some Indigenous Browse Plants Of Botswana, A A. Aganga, C M. Tsopito, K M. Morake

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

A study was carried out to evaluate the tannin content and crude protein degradation of leaves and twigs from indigenous browsable trees which provide feed for grazing livestock on natural rangelands of Botswana. These browses include the families Leguminosae (Acacias), Capparidaceae (Boscias), Combretaceae (Combretum) and Tiliaceae (Grewias). These were found to be of good nutritive value, with the leaves having a high content of crude protein (9 - 16%) and a wide range of dry matter digestibility (37 - 69.82%). The correlation between crude protein disappearance and tannin content was found to be negative (-0.582) and significant (P<0.05).
