Identification Of Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria For Ballona Wetlands Restoration, Caroline Ehren, Michelle Lum
Identification Of Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria For Ballona Wetlands Restoration, Caroline Ehren, Michelle Lum
Honors Thesis
The Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve (BWER) is home to many California native plant species which contribute to ecosystem services of flood and erosion mitigation, water quality improvement, carbon sequestration, and habitat provisions for threatened and endangered species. Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) improve plant tolerance to abiotic stressors and suppress pathogens through the alteration of nutrient absorption, water uptake, and enzymatic activity, and have potential in conservation strategies by aiding revegetation methods. Eight bacterial strains were isolated from native Frankenia salina and Baccharis pilularis in the BWER to determine whether these microbes act as PGPR. The strains were characterized using …

Investigation Of Surface Chemistry From Electron Irradiation Of Synthetic Schreibersite, Tyler Davis
Investigation Of Surface Chemistry From Electron Irradiation Of Synthetic Schreibersite, Tyler Davis
Master's Theses
While phosphorus is one of the key elements for life on Earth, it has relatively low abundance in extraterrestrial environments, making it a target for astronomers and astrobiologists interested in the possibility of life beyond our planet. Schreibersite (Fe,Ni)3P is one of the first P-containing minerals to condense during planetary cooling and one of the primary P-containing minerals in iron and stony-iron meteorites. Therefore, it is a likely P-bearing mineral in cometary cores and dust grains within the interstellar medium and circumstellar envelopes. Experiments in this project were performed with the aim of observing the formation of small …

Gaps In Our National Security: How The Lack Of Female Leadership Impacts Our Nation’S Success And Safety, Maggie Sullivan
Cleveland State Law Review
Gender inequality in the workplace is an ever-evolving discussion. One aspect of gender inequality that is frequently overlooked is the leadership gap—the lack of representation of women in the top positions of their respective careers. Research demonstrates that the leadership gap is particularly pronounced in the legal field. This Article analyzes the factors within the legal field that perpetuate the leadership gap and examines the unique, confounding qualities of careers in national security to illustrate an exacerbated problem of inequality for women lawyers in national security. The lack of adequate diversity in people working in—and leading—the national-security field has been …

Studies of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) toxicity have largely focused on individual components such as flavour additives, base e-liquid ingredients (propylene glycol, glycerol), device characteristics (eg, model, components, wattage), use behaviour, etc. However, vaping involves inhalation of chemical mixtures and interactions between compounds can occur that can lead to different toxicities than toxicity of the individual components. Methods based on the additive toxicity of individual chemical components to estimate the health risks of complex mixtures can result in the overestimation or underestimation of exposure risks, since interactions between components are under-investigated. In the case of ENDS, the potential of …

Equity work and open educational resources may seem like an obvious pairing, but how much do we as open education advocates connect these dots and articulate this important relationship?
The University of Northern Colorado (UNC) was one of five U.S. institutions to receive a grant to pilot the Driving OER Sustainability for Student Success (DOERS3) Equity Through OER Rubric. Members (36 higher education systems in the U.S. and Canada) of DOERS3 created the rubric to help define, unpack, and explain the multiple dimensions of equity and foreground the role of OER in closing equity gaps. The final rubric project portfolio …

An Investigation Of Alternative Strike Policies For Railroad Workers, Evan Morrisey
An Investigation Of Alternative Strike Policies For Railroad Workers, Evan Morrisey
Honors Theses
In principle, railroad workers have a legal right to engage in strikes in the United States, just like a majority of other workers. In practice, however, they are ostensibly forced into compulsory arbitration where Congress legislates their contract even if they vote to strike. The government’s justification for overriding the workers’ right to strike in this way is that a full-scale strike could have serious economic impacts to the national economy. Overriding railroad workers’ right to strike still raises ethical concerns, because the right to strike is crucial for workers to protect their interests. While unrestricted, indefinite, large-scale strikes may …

Amplon: Amplifying Dna With Multiarm Priming And Looping Optimization Of Nucleic Acid, Mert Tunca Doganay, Ethan Roman, Andrea M. Hujer, Robert A. Bonomo, Mohamed S. Draz
Faculty Scholarship
Nucleic acid amplification, the bedrock of biotechnology and molecular diagnostics, surges in applications—especially isothermal approaches—heightening the demand for advanced and precisely engineered methods. Here, a novel approach for amplifying DNA with multiarm priming and looping optimization of nucleic acid (AMPLON) is presented. AMPLON relies on a novel polymeric material with unique set of multiarm polyethylene glycol–DNA primers for efficient DNA amplification under isothermal conditions. Each arm carries single-stranded DNA complementing the sense or antisense sequence of the target DNA. The amplification reaction begins with antisense arms binding to the target DNA, forming a template for sense-carrying arms to direct multiarm …
Effective Dispersal Patterns In Prairie Plant Species Across Human-Modified Landscapes., Elizabeth C. Hendrickson, Mitchell B. Cruzan
Effective Dispersal Patterns In Prairie Plant Species Across Human-Modified Landscapes., Elizabeth C. Hendrickson, Mitchell B. Cruzan
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Effective dispersal among plant populations is dependent on vector behaviour, landscape features and availability of adequate habitats. To capture landscape feature effects on dispersal, studies must be conducted at scales reflecting single-generation dispersal events (mesoscale). Many studies are conducted at large scales where genetic differentiation is due to dispersal occurring over multiple generations, making it difficult to interpret the effects of specific landscape features on vector behaviour. Genetic structure at the mesoscale may be determined by ecological and evolutionary processes, such as the consequences of vector behaviour on patterns of gene flow. We used chloroplast haplotypes and nuclear genome SNP …

A Trump-Shaped Shadow: Demonstrating Competing Republican Identities To Gain Party Support, Amede Karina-Plun
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
How do Republican candidates demonstrate their conservative identity to appeal to Republican primary voters? Recent scholarship finds that ascendant groups within the Republican Party have changed the party’s platform, moved to the extreme right, and redefined the American conservative identity. This paper hypothesizes that former President Donald Trump is advantaged in the 2024 Republican primary as the party’s standard bearer. Additionally, I hypothesize that former Governor Nikki Haley and Governor Ron DeSantis try to gain support from Republican voters by redefining what it means to be a Republican, and they use their appeal to Republican voters as alternatives to Trump …

Combining Empirical And Physics-Based Models For Solar Wind Prediction, Rob Johnson, Soukaina Filali Boubrahimi, Omar Bahri, Shah Muhammad Hamdi
Computer Science Faculty and Staff Publications
Solar wind modeling is classified into two main types: empirical models and physics-based models, each designed to forecast solar wind properties in various regions of the heliosphere. Empirical models, which are cost-effective, have demonstrated significant accuracy in predicting solar wind at the L1 Lagrange point. On the other hand, physics-based models rely on magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) principles and demand more computational resources. In this research paper, we build upon our recent novel approach that merges empirical and physics-based models. Our recent proposal involves the creation of a new physics-informed neural network that leverages time series data from solar wind predictors to …

Towards A Study Protocol: A Data-Driven Workflow To Identify Error Sources In Direct Ink Write Mechatronics, Hein Htet Aung, Quynh D. Tran, Pawan Tripathi, Roger H. French, Laura S. Bruckman
Faculty Scholarship
Using Direct Ink Write (DIW) technology in a rapid and large-scale production requires reliable quality control for printed parts. Data streams generated during printing, such as print mechatronics, are massive and diverse which impedes extracting insights. In our study protocol approach, we developed a data-driven workflow to understand the behavior of sensor-measured X- and Y-axes positional errors with process parameters, such as print velocity and velocity control. We uncovered patterns showing that instantaneous changes in the velocity, when the build platform accelerates and decelerates, largely influence the positional errors, especially in the X-axis due to the hardware architecture. Since DIW …

Vt-Nmr Analysis Of Rotation-Inversion Of N-(4-Hydroxybutyl)-N-(2,2,2-Trifluoroethyl) Tert-Butyl Carbamate: Utilizing The −Ch2cf3 Appendage As A Reporter On E/Z-Isomerization, Brian Jameson, Rainer Glaser
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
The rotational barrier about the CN carbamate bond of N-(4-hydroxybutyl)-N-(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) tert-butyl carbamate 1 was determined by variable temperature (VT) 13C and 19F NMR spectroscopy. The −CH2CF3 appendage reports on rotational isomerism and allows for the observation of separate signals for the E- and Z-ensembles at low temperature. The activation barrier for E/Z-isomerization was quantified using Eyring-Polanyi theory which requires the measurements of the maximum difference in Larmor frequency Δνmax and the convergence temperature Tc. Both Δνmax and Tc were interpolated by analyzing sigmoidal functions fitted to data describing signal separation and the quality of the superposition of the E- and …

Theses
Scanning electron microscopes (SEM) are poorly characterized imaging instruments. The SEM optics (lens and aperture assembly) is designed to form a focused electron probe that scans the specimen to produce images. Therefore, the imaging efficacy in SEM strongly depends on the quality of the optics. However, there is no way to accurately characterize the optics in an uncorrected SEM (without multipole correctors) due to the lack of an exit wave. This work focuses on improving the imaging capabilities of an uncorrected SEM by understanding its optical performance using wave optical theory, simulation, and experiment. In this dissertation, we have developed …

The Swi/Snf Atp-Dependent Chromatin Remodeling Complex In Cell Lineage Priming And Early Development, Dhurjhoti Saha, Srinivas Animireddy, Blaine Bartholomew
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
ATP dependent chromatin remodelers have pivotal roles in transcription, DNA replication and repair, and maintaining genome integrity. SWI/SNF remodelers were first discovered in yeast genetic screens for factors involved in mating type switching or for using alternative energy sources therefore termed SWI/SNF complex (short for SWItch/Sucrose NonFermentable). The SWI/SNF complexes utilize energy from ATP hydrolysis to disrupt histone-DNA interactions and shift, eject, or reposition nucleosomes making the underlying DNA more accessible to specific transcription factors and other regulatory proteins. In development, SWI/SNF orchestrates the precise activation and repression of genes at different stages, safe guards the formation of specific cell …

A General Theorem In Spectral Extremal Graph Theory, Dheer Noal Desai
Combinatorics Seminar
Tur´an numbers are a cornerstone of extremal graph theory. Their asymptotics are completely known when forbidding graphs with chromatic number at least three, however they remain unknown for several basic bipartite graphs. Nikiforov introduced a spectral analogue to Tur´an problems referred to as spectral Tur´ an problems. Here our objective is to maximize the spectral radius of the adjacency matrices of graphs not containing some subgraphs. Such a study may give strong upper bounds for the associated Tur´ an problems. While the asymptotics of spectral Tur´ an numbers are known for graphs with chromatic number at least three, several families …

In two recent cases, Google LLC v. Oracle America, Inc. (“Google v. Oracle”), and Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts v. Goldsmith (“Warhol”), the Supreme Court ratified its 1994 holding that transformative use is the appropriate analytical framework for applying copyright law’s fair use provision. In doing so, the Court withstood significant pressure from industry participants in these cases to change course. This Article argues that the Court’s decisions, which represent one third of the Court’s total merits decisions on fair use, are historic. The principal contribution this Article makes is to demonstrate to courts and parties in future …
