Does Contingent Reward Leadership Enhance Or Diminish Team Creativity? It Depends On Leader (Un-) Predictability, Debjani Ghosh, Martin Buss, Amita Shivhare May 2024

Does Contingent Reward Leadership Enhance Or Diminish Team Creativity? It Depends On Leader (Un-) Predictability, Debjani Ghosh, Martin Buss, Amita Shivhare

Management Faculty Publications

Although prior research has shown that reward provision might sometimes increase creativity, little is known about how leadership that clarifies effort-reward contingencies (i.e., contingent reward leadership) is related to team creativity. Drawing on the theory of learned industriousness, we argue that contingent reward leadership can enhance team knowledge exchange and, in turn, team creative performance. However, we propose that this relationship is moderated by leader unpredictability, which can create uncertainty about resource allocation, thereby undermining the otherwise positive effect of contingent reward leadership. In a two-source, lagged design (three-wave) field study with data from 60 organizational teams, we found a …

Robo-Advisers And Investor Behavior, Benjamin Loos, Pengfei Ma, Alessandro Previtero, Andres Hackethal May 2024

Robo-Advisers And Investor Behavior, Benjamin Loos, Pengfei Ma, Alessandro Previtero, Andres Hackethal

Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics

Using data from a large German retail bank, we investigate the effects of the introduction of a robo-advisory tool on clients’ portfolios. Robo clients experience a significant increase in financial risk-taking and improve portfolio efficiency along several dimensions (more diversification, less home bias, more investment in passive funds, reduced investment fees). Our evidence is consistent with robo-advisers being a more cost-effective approach for offering financial advice, especially to less sophisticated investors.

Meta-Analytic Investigations Of Team Development Interventions And Effectiveness, Sydney Begerowski May 2024

Meta-Analytic Investigations Of Team Development Interventions And Effectiveness, Sydney Begerowski

All Dissertations

Team development interventions (TDIs) are evidenced-based best practices that improve performance trajectories of teams. To date, various independent studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of one type of TDI in improving effectiveness, but there has yet to be a cross-intervention assessment. Accordingly, the goal of this dissertation was to explore a subset of TDIs (team charters, team training, team debriefing) from a comparative lens. First, I conducted a series of pairwise meta-analyses across team charters, team training, and team debriefing to establish a TDI-effectiveness relationship. Findings were inconclusive regarding team charters, but suggested that team training and team debriefing significantly improve …

A Reinforcement Learning Framework For Powertrain Control Including Shared Learning Among A Fleet Of Vehicles, Lindsey Kerbel

All Dissertations

The transportation sector provides a significant opportunity to reduce global emissions, both through technological advancements and vehicular control strategies. Model-based control systems are popular methods for increasing the operating efficiency of vehicles. However, these systems often rely on models that require costly calibrations that still fail to capture the complexity of modern powertrain systems and the variations found in real-world driving. The recent availability of operational data through connected vehicle technology and/or edge devices has led to the emergence of data-driven control strategies that can learn optimal control policies through the interactions of the vehicle’s control system with the environment. …

An In Vitro Investigation Of Urothelial Cell Function In Response To Hypoxia And Pressure In Relation To Bladder Outlet Obstruction, Britney Hudson

All Dissertations

Bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) is a prevalent urological condition and can be characterized by the presence of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), such as hesitancy, weak stream, and nocturia. The main cause of BOO is a partial blockage of the urethra, which results in elevated voiding pressure, high storage pressure, and tissue ischemia, which are thought to be the triggers of bladder inflammation and subsequent fibrosis. Often patients do not seek treatment until the conditions get severe. Thus, it would be ideal to have an early diagnostic tool to detect changes in the bladder due to BOO. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) …

Convergence Estimate Of Minimal Residual Methods And Random Sketching Of Krylov Subspace Methods, Peter Westerbaan May 2024

Convergence Estimate Of Minimal Residual Methods And Random Sketching Of Krylov Subspace Methods, Peter Westerbaan

All Dissertations

This study concerns two main issues in numerical linear algebra: convergence estimate of minimal residual methods based on explicit construction of approximate min-max polynomials for in- definite matrices, and development and analysis of Krylov subspace methods using non-orthonormal basis vectors based on random sketching. For a matrix A with spectrum Λ(A), it is well known that the min-max polynomial problem min max |pk (z)| pk ∈Pk, pk (0)=1, z∈Λ(A) is used to bound the relative error of Krylov subspace minimum residual methods or similar methods. For a symmetric positive definite matrix A, the min-max polynomial for the Conjugate Gradient (CG) …

Locally Injectable Peptide Hydrogel For Conversion Of Temozolomide And Codelivery Of Sirna In Glioblastoma Multiforme Treatment, Megan Pitz

All Dissertations

Traditional treatment methods for glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) are largely unsuccessful, with a 5-year survival rate of 5.6%. Temozolomide (TMZ), the only chemotherapy FDA-approved for GBM treatment, is a hydrophobic prodrug that is stable in an acidic pH and begins converting to its active form at a physiological pH of 7.4. However, complete conversion of TMZ is observed only at a higher pH, and only about 30% of administered TMZ reaches the central nervous system. Therefore, there is a need for new treatment methods that maximize TMZ delivery to and efficacy at the tumor site. Self-assembling peptides are a unique class …

Single Cell Pharmacodynamic Modeling Of Cancer Cell Lines, Arnab Mutsuddy May 2024

Single Cell Pharmacodynamic Modeling Of Cancer Cell Lines, Arnab Mutsuddy

All Dissertations

Cancer is one of the leading causes of disease related death worldwide. Since the discovery of the genomic origins of cancer, targeted therapy has been developed towards specific mutations implicated for oncogenic transformation. However, current standard-of-care for mapping cancer patients to efficacious drug combination is often inadequate. The pathophysiology of tumor progression relies on the dysregulation of biomolecular pathways of which the topology and the dynamics challenge prognosis. Moreover, the overall genomic instability involved in disease states and the resulting inter-patient as well as intra-tumoral heterogeneity challenge rationalization of therapy and clinical decision-making. It highlights the need for the use …

All Dissertations

The historical use of radioluminescent objects, most notably those containing radium-226 (226Ra)-based paint, has contributed to contemporary environmental contamination of radioactive material, often near naval installations or other military-associated coastal sites. The risk to both human and environmental health from this small-scale, discrete radioactive material is challenging to predict due to large uncertainties in the source terms, bioavailability, and toxicity of these objects. The objective of this study was to provide information on the accumulation and toxicity of acute 226Ra exposure in a sentinel species to improve risk assessments for small-scale, coastal radiological contamination. The sentinel species …

Examining Context Dependency Of Invasion Hypotheses At The Continental Scale Using Riverine Fish Communities, Lily Thompson May 2024

Examining Context Dependency Of Invasion Hypotheses At The Continental Scale Using Riverine Fish Communities, Lily Thompson

All Dissertations

Many well-supported hypotheses seek to explain invasion dynamics, but evidence for common patterns among regions and taxa remains inconclusive and often contradictory. Invasion ecology is fundamentally linked to spatial scale, and discrepancies in results among invasion studies may be attributed, in part, to a failure to fully consider scale dependency. In this dissertation, I investigate the sources of inconsistencies across spatial scales and large geographic extents using riverine fish communities across the conterminous United States. To do so, I tested three main ideas. First, that cross-scale interactions contextualize estimated invasion mechanisms among regions. My results demonstrate that local empirical support …

A Rhetorical-Sociological Understanding Of Emotion, Amy Boone May 2024

A Rhetorical-Sociological Understanding Of Emotion, Amy Boone

All Dissertations

This project presents a rhetorical-sociological understanding of emotion while foregrounding the place and role of language. Born from Sara Ahmed’s work in The Cultural Politics of Emotion, it presents a simplified equation (contact + orientation = emotion) as both a prescriptive and descriptive formula for making sense of human emotional experience. Starting with an exploration of the difficult-to-understand affect system, this dissertation identifies both rhetoric and affect as energies which cannot be understood apart from their traces, the things they move, produce, and become. As a way to get at these often-invisible forces, two trace studies are conducted which explore …

To The Torus And Beyond: An X-Ray Study Of Agn Tori Morphology, Andrealuna Pizzetti

All Dissertations

Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are among the Universe's most energetic and powerful objects, fueled by an accreting supermassive black hole (SMBH) at the host galaxy's center, surrounded by a toroidal structure of dusty gas. Ultraviolet photons arising from the accretion disk get up-scattered to X-rays via inverse Compton scattering by hot electrons close to the accretion disk. Being produced in the very center of the AGN, X-ray photons are powerful messengers that probe the physics of the accretion system and the matter in the surroundings. The torus, formerly considered homogeneous, appears to be a more complex structure of clouds with …

Can I Get A Witness? Employee Reactions To Witnessing Visible Self-Compassion At Work, Sara Krivacek May 2024

Can I Get A Witness? Employee Reactions To Witnessing Visible Self-Compassion At Work, Sara Krivacek

All Dissertations

Self-compassion is defined as a tripartite process whereby an individual notices their own suffering, feels empathetic concern for oneself, and responds to alleviate or address the suffering. Research on self-compassion has proliferated in the last decade, and a major theme in the literature posits that it is beneficial for the practicing individual. However, less attention is given to the impact of self-compassion expression on other individuals in the workplace – partly because one major assumption is that self-compassion is an internalized process. In this dissertation, I conceptualize self-compassion as a social process and draw from affective events theory to make …
