Self-Care Techniques To Decrease Special Education Teacher Burnout, Carrie Frost May 2024

Self-Care Techniques To Decrease Special Education Teacher Burnout, Carrie Frost

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The focal topic of my capstone project is special education teacher burnout and how self-care techniques can reduce the likelihood of chronic stress and burnout. The challenges of being a special education teacher include but are not limited to, various disabilities and behaviors, lack of classroom and administration support, and overall management. Research conducted by Emery and Vandenberg (2010) stated that special education teachers often experience burnout, which commonly leads to employee attrition. Burnout and the personal stress that comes with it are the biggest contributors to the shortage of qualified special educators throughout the United States. Their challenges involve …

Beyond The Field: Exploring Identity, Spiritual Growth, And Community Through The Fellowship Of Christian Athletes, Haylee Clay May 2024

Beyond The Field: Exploring Identity, Spiritual Growth, And Community Through The Fellowship Of Christian Athletes, Haylee Clay

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

For this Capstone Project, the researchers investigated Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) representatives’ views on bringing student-athletes to have a relationship with Christ and why they think it is important. Based on an analysis of the data and the relevant research literature, the researchers used what they have learned to formulate an action that responds to improving FCA in a way that inspires, informs, or involves a particular audience. This is important because student-athletes need a sense of community and safe space to express their relationship with God. It is argued that having a relationship with Christ is important, especially …

Raising Middle School Students' Awareness Of Relationship Risks Associated With Technology, Reda Gerges

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Increasing middle school students' awareness of relationship risks associated with electronic technology is the main focus of this capstone project. With the prevalence of technology in teenagers' lives, many may not fully grasp the potential dangers of digital communication with friends and romantic partners. Although there are many advantages to using smartphones, tablets, and other technologies, there may also be drawbacks. Physical health concerns, eye strain Digital eye fatigue, eye strain, and pain can result from prolonged screen use. Overuse of tablets and smartphones can lead to bad posture, which can cause back and neck pain. Sleep disturbances by inhibiting …

Teaching First Graders About Emotional Self-Regulation, Nayeli N. Garcia Salinas May 2024

Teaching First Graders About Emotional Self-Regulation, Nayeli N. Garcia Salinas

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This project focused on increasing the emotion regulation skills of six to seven-year-olds. Emotion regulation is “a person’s ability to effectively manage and respond to an emotional experience” (Rolston & Lloyd-Richardson, n.d.). In other words, it is when a person understands their emotions, is capable of controlling them, and has appropriate responses to the events that caused them. Emotion regulation is difficult for children, it is specifically difficult for children who are learning to adjust to school. School is a new environment that can cause children to feel strong emotions that they have not felt before, therefore making it challenging …

The Need For Mental Health Resources In Migrant Farm Working Families, Juliana Cecilia Garcia May 2024

The Need For Mental Health Resources In Migrant Farm Working Families, Juliana Cecilia Garcia

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The focus of my capstone project is on providing mental health resources for migrant workers and their families. Language barriers and cultural differences are a big obstacle for these parents. Because of this, it is hard for parents to seek help. Language barriers can make communicating one’s struggles with healthcare providers difficult. These topics can be difficult for anyone to put into words, but it’s especially challenging for those who may not speak the same language as the healthcare professional. Per my experience cultural and language barriers are a big obstacle these families face. This could be because they can …

Mental Health And The Well-Being Of Adolescents, Janeice Pamuspusan May 2024

Mental Health And The Well-Being Of Adolescents, Janeice Pamuspusan

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This capstone project focuses on adolescents’ mental health and well-being. Before the age of twenty-five 70% of mental health disorders start to develop which is why it’s important to teach adolescents ways to improve their mental well-being along with the signs of mental disorders (Kutcher et al., 2008). According to the World Health Organization, many of those adolescents' mental health conditions go unrecognized or untreated. Those illnesses often go unrecognized and untreated because of the stigma that follows mental health including cultural differences. Because of those differences, many adolescents will go into adulthood still struggling with their mental well-being and …

Inhibition Of Pro-Inflammatory Lipid Mediators By Yersinia Pestis., Amanda Brady May 2024

Inhibition Of Pro-Inflammatory Lipid Mediators By Yersinia Pestis., Amanda Brady

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Yersinia pestis causes the human disease known as plague. A key manifestation of plague is a delayed inflammatory response. Because this delay in inflammation is required for virulence, I was interested in defining the molecular mechanisms used by Y. pestis to evade immune recognition. Eicosanoids are produced early during infection and necessary to initiate a rapid inflammatory response. Despite the importance of these lipids in mediating inflammation, the role of eicosanoids during plague has not been previously investigated. Using an intranasal mouse model infection, I determined the kinetics of eicosanoid synthesis during pneumonic plague. I further demonstrated that LTB4 …

Doing Links: The Neuroscience Of Technology Addiction, Ali Hatfield

Scientific Kenyon: The Neuroscience Edition

What’s the difference between fentanyl and Facebook? Vicodin and video games? Whippits and WhatsApp? They all have the capacity to be addictive, and your kids are much more likely to experience one over the other. Addiction is an umbrella term describing the use of something in a dependent and problematic way, often referring to specific clinical afflictions such as substance abuse disorder or gambling [1]. Addictions and their symptoms derive from neurobiological changes that occur throughout the nervous system in response to a certain stimulus, such as a drug. Common behaviors associated with addiction include preoccupation with and increasing tolerance …

Harnessing Social Media For Climate Action In Developing Countries: A Case Study Of Egypt, Nicolas Hamelin, Passant Halawa May 2024

Harnessing Social Media For Climate Action In Developing Countries: A Case Study Of Egypt, Nicolas Hamelin, Passant Halawa

Faculty Journal Articles

Like many developing nations, Egypt is facing a climate crisis due to its agricultural dependence and the Nile Delta’s vulnerability. Despite government plans for sustainable development, recent infrastructure projects have resulted in large-scale green space removal. Effective communication about environmental issues can spark pro-environmental behavior and citizen activism. This study explores social media’s potential to bridge this gap in Egypt. Utilizing Facebook AB testing with a limited budget, we reached a significant 2.3% of Egypt’s online population (nearly 2 million users). This study explored message framing, with findings showing that rational posts resonated best while fear appeals had minimal impact. …

The Impact Of Death Anxiety On Counselors’-In-Training Efficacy With Substance Use Populations, Jason Rose May 2024

The Impact Of Death Anxiety On Counselors’-In-Training Efficacy With Substance Use Populations, Jason Rose

Dissertations

Death anxiety has been an unremitting agent of the human experience. The psychological dilemma posed by the awareness and forecasting of death can increase anxiety, thus affecting well-being through the compulsive desire or will to persist (Becker, 1973; Yalom, 1980). Such psychological armor can manifest in conscious and unconscious behaviors, thoughts, and emotions to which persons utilize psychological, social, and cultural defenses to manage anxiety (Becker, 1973; Solomon et al., 2015). Across all levels of counseling, there has been a deficiency in awareness and discussion of death-related fears within the therapeutic process (Lacocque & Loeb, 1988). Therefore, due to the …

Exploring Imagination Within Early Childhood Education, Leah Christian Naylor May 2024

Exploring Imagination Within Early Childhood Education, Leah Christian Naylor

Dissertations

Imagination is a powerful mental process and integral to a child’s development and education. Early childhood education is an ideal situation and time to explore, nurture, and provide space for imagination. The purpose of this research was to witness, document, and share the imaginative moments in three ECE classrooms and contribute to the important body of research on imagination. Within this qualitative study, I utilized educational criticism to explore the use, presence, and implications of imagination in an educational environment. I found it was in the space afforded by teachers—which included time, opportunities for student choice and freedom, or open-ended …

Musical Inspirations From Tang Court Dance Nichang Yuyi In Liu Qing’S Fantasia Of Chinese Ancient Dance For Two Pianos, Yuan Li May 2024

Musical Inspirations From Tang Court Dance Nichang Yuyi In Liu Qing’S Fantasia Of Chinese Ancient Dance For Two Pianos, Yuan Li

Dissertations

Dr. Liu Qing’s Fantasia of Chinese Ancient Dance for two pianos (2011) stands as a notable contemporary Chinese piano composition that reinterprets the renowned court dance suite Nichang Yuyi (the dance of Rainbow-Colored Feather Garment) from the 8th century Tang Dynasty China. Drawing inspiration from the structure and the musical modal languages of the Tang court dance, as well as the descriptions from Tang poet Bai Juyi’s poem of Nichang, Liu Qing adeptly combined her knowledge of Chinese musical traditions with Western compositional techniques, introducing stylistic diversity to the piano duo scene through this captivating work of dance music. This …

A Discrit Analysis Of Experiences Influencing Belonging For College Students With Disabilities, Paige Nichole Johnsen May 2024

A Discrit Analysis Of Experiences Influencing Belonging For College Students With Disabilities, Paige Nichole Johnsen

Dissertations

Despite growing numbers of college students with disabilities and a call to offer support beyond disability service offices, earlier data demonstrate disproportionate barriers to disabled students’ academic success resulting from or in (a) limitations to existing accommodations, (b) worsening mental health, (c) academic achievement gaps, and (d) a privileged understanding of disability. Using disability critical race theory (DisCrit) as a theoretical framework, the purpose of this narrative case study was to discover the intersectional experiences impacting sense of belonging for college students with disabilities at a mid-sized regional institution (pseudonym: Mountain West University) in the United States. The study was …

Comparison Of Bayesian Versus Maximum Likelihood Estimation In The Case Of Unbalanced Panels With Count Data, Bryan Hudson May 2024

Comparison Of Bayesian Versus Maximum Likelihood Estimation In The Case Of Unbalanced Panels With Count Data, Bryan Hudson

Dissertations

Commonly in applied research settings, investigators wish to study counts of some event of interest over time, such as number of infections, or absences from school. However, in many cases, investigators may only have access to data sets in which measurements with individuals are not available at each measurement timepoint. A foundational statistical method for the study of panel data is generalized linear mixed effect modeling, which typically uses the maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) to estimate parameters. However, Bayesian estimation (BE) offers an alternative approach. In this simulation study, data were generated with varying sample sizes, proportions of missing data, …

Exploring University Student Perceptions Of Climate Change Using Connection To Nature And Psychological Distance, Jessica Duke May 2024

Exploring University Student Perceptions Of Climate Change Using Connection To Nature And Psychological Distance, Jessica Duke

Dissertations

The central goal of my dissertation is to better understand undergraduate biology students’ perceptions of climate change specifically using a localized lens. Research relating to climate change perceptions and understanding is common in the K-12 setting; however, there have been far fewer studies that use undergraduate student populations. Undergraduate students represent a new age of the voting populus and are therefore an important demographic to target for inducing environmental change. To foster climate change awareness, concern, and willingness to act in our undergraduate students, we must first understand how they perceive it. Using both quantitative and qualitative approaches I explored …

Community Of Practice As A Path To An Authentic Emancipatory Education, Rachel James Beckwith May 2024

Community Of Practice As A Path To An Authentic Emancipatory Education, Rachel James Beckwith

Dissertations

Beckwith, Rachel James. Community of practice as a path to an authentic emancipatory education. Published Doctor of Education dissertation, University of Northern Colorado, 2024. Emphasized in Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is belonging. It is identified as one of the most inherent human needs; we cannot survive without connection, without belonging. Yet our society seems to reject community values in lieu of rugged individualism. This hyper-fixation on liberty at the expense of social responsibility has not been without its consequences. Classrooms have been a prime breeding spot for the battle between “us” and “them;” the heavy emphasis on grades, contests, and …

A Sensor-Based Simulation Method For Spatiotemporal Event Detection, Yuqin Jiang, Andrey A. Popov, Zhenlong Li, Michael E. Hodgson, Binghu Huang May 2024

A Sensor-Based Simulation Method For Spatiotemporal Event Detection, Yuqin Jiang, Andrey A. Popov, Zhenlong Li, Michael E. Hodgson, Binghu Huang

Faculty Publications

Human movements in urban areas are essential to understand human–environment interactions. However, activities and associated movements are full of uncertainties due to the complexity of a city. In this paper, we propose a novel sensor-based approach for spatiotemporal event detection based on the Discrete Empirical Interpolation Method. Specifically, we first identify the key locations, defined as “sensors”, which have the strongest correlation with the whole dataset. We then simulate a regular uneventful scenario with the observation data points from those key locations. By comparing the simulated and observation scenarios, events are extracted both spatially and temporally. We apply this method …
