Intuition In Modal Epistemology: Concept-Based Or Imagination-Based?, Jeremy Bachman
Intuition In Modal Epistemology: Concept-Based Or Imagination-Based?, Jeremy Bachman
Honors Scholar Theses
In both George Bealer’s moderate modal rationalism (MMR) and Peter Kung’s modal evidence from imagination (MEI) intuition plays an indispensable role in modal knowledge. However, these modal epistemologies differ in whether modal knowledge is based on intuitions yielded by concepts or by imaginations. Both MMR and MEI take intuitions to be sui generis propositional attitudes, basic epistemic units, reasons for belief, and sources of evidence. However, MEI holds that sensory and intellectual content can prompt a rational intuitions. On the other hand, MMR is restricted to intuitions yielded by non-sensory content. According to MMR, intellectual intuitions about privileged concepts give …
How Does Hummock Creation In Submerging Salt Marshes Alter Nitrous Oxide Fluxes?, Juliette Doyle
How Does Hummock Creation In Submerging Salt Marshes Alter Nitrous Oxide Fluxes?, Juliette Doyle
Honors Scholar Theses
Climate change is altering ecosystems and the services they provide. Salt marsh ecosystems typically protect coastal areas and filter nitrogen out of water, but are rapidly submerging due to rising sea levels and human development that prevents landward migration. Recent restoration efforts to preserve salt marshes attempt to build elevation capital and promote vegetation and animal habitat, but it is unclear how such efforts affect salt marsh biogeochemistry and dynamics of nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas. To better understand how adding sediment to submerging salt marshes may alter nitrous oxide fluxes, I leveraged a salt marsh hummock creation experiment …
The Sabellic Verbal Systems, Kaleb Demello
The Sabellic Verbal Systems, Kaleb Demello
Honors Scholar Theses
A brief analysis of the known corpus of verbal forms in Oscan and Umbrian, going over the formation of each form, a speculative full conjugation for each language, and a short comparison to Latin. The Sabellic languages share some innovations from PIE in common with their much more famous cousin, but they also differ in the formation of a few important forms. Both branches have a system of thematic vowels across tenses and aspects, suggesting a purely ornamental function bleached of meaning dating back to Proto-Italic. The future tense is Sabellic is derived from the PIE aorist, rather than PIE …
Regarding The Gender Gap: Interrogating Mcarthur’S Hypothesis On Dyslexia, Anxiety, And Inattention, Caroline Lynch
Regarding The Gender Gap: Interrogating Mcarthur’S Hypothesis On Dyslexia, Anxiety, And Inattention, Caroline Lynch
Honors Scholar Theses
This study interrogated the pervasive gender gap in dyslexia diagnosis. In order to do so, we analyzed Dr. Genevieve McArthur’s recent hypothesis that poor reading is linked to poor self-concept, anxiety, and inattention, which begins the cycle once again. Using a subset of data from the Child Mind Institute’s Healthy Brain Network biobank (children aged 7-11, n=1,725), we evaluated McArthur’s proposed relationships, and possible gendered differences within those relationships through probing which factors were important predictors of if a child did or did not receive a dyslexia diagnosis. We looked at word reading, biological sex, anxiety and inattention as possible …

Only studies that utilized multivariate analyses were included. The NewsCastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Form for Cohort studies was used to assess risk of bias in the included studies. Student and school-level factors were then collected and synthesized via full text review. In total, there …
Use Of Cre-Lox Mice As A Model For Ependymogenesis, Poorva Bagchee
Use Of Cre-Lox Mice As A Model For Ependymogenesis, Poorva Bagchee
Honors Scholar Theses
Stem cells in the lateral ventricles of the brain undergo a process of development within the ventricular-subventricular zone. In early development neuroepithelial cells divide to form more neuroepithelial cells or convert to radial glial cells (RGCs). These RGCs, or stem cells, then divide to form neurons or other glial cells such as ependymal cells, which form a single-layered ependyma along the ventricular wall. These stem cells divide in two ways: symmetrically, producing two ependymal cells or asymmetrically, yielding one neural stem cell and ependymal cell. To further study this process the Cre-lox system in mice will be used. By breeding …

An Educational Resource For Particle Identification (Pid) In Experimental Particle Physics Data, Richard Dube
Honors Scholar Theses
Although particle physics research is typically reserved for advanced undergraduates, algebra-based physics students can readily develop the foundational skills necessary to conduct particle physics research. Despite this, there is a shortage of educational resources that introduce particle physics to algebra-based physics students. This project, Particle Identification Playground, is a collection of Python-based activities that teach students about several fundamental topics in experimental particle physics research. Through these activities, students will learn about the common detectors used in particle physics, how they work, and how we can use these detectors to identify particles. Students are able to interact with 3D models …
Analyzing The Impact Of Implicit Bias In Pharmacy And Healthcare-Related Professions, Jessica Bylyku
Analyzing The Impact Of Implicit Bias In Pharmacy And Healthcare-Related Professions, Jessica Bylyku
Honors Scholar Theses
American healthcare is a broad, complicated field of study and work. Those who work in healthcare may possess or be affected by implicit biases, which complicates matters more. Implicit bias is the unconscious mental tendency to create automatic associations with a particular group of people.1 As such, implicit biases have the potential to become explicit biases in the form of stereotyping, microaggressions, prejudice, and ultimately discrimination. Researchers believe implicit biases may have a biological basis in human brains, and several theories implicate bias in decision-making processes. The implications of bias have promoted researchers to perform many studies about effects on …

The Light Scattering Properties Of Amorphous Nanoparticles Formed By Poorly Soluble Drugs, Sarah Casella
Honors Scholar Theses
The research of amorphous drug formulations is an emerging field of study, which offers a promising strategy to improve the oral bioavailability of poorly water-soluble drugs. A critical aspect of amorphous solubility is the measurement of particle size and light diffraction, which is measured using dynamic light scattering (DLS). DLS is a technique used to characterize the size of colloidal dispersions, where a laser beam illuminates a suspension of particles or molecules undergoing Brownian motion. In this experiment, a procedure was developed utilizing DLS to investigate the similarities and differences in light diffraction properties of particles among three different poorly …
I Wrote This Instead Of Being Productive, Timothy Hill
I Wrote This Instead Of Being Productive, Timothy Hill
Honors Scholar Theses
"I Wrote This Instead of Being Productive" is a poetry chapbook focused on the mythos of productivity in our modern era, from the perspective of a college student. What does productivity mean at the end of an empire? In recent years, culture has become obsessed with new forms of productivity and time management. We optimize our schedules, compete against each other, and attempt to dissociate from the harsher realities of our lives. An omnipresent internet culture motivates us to generate more value from our time, even if it feels hollow. ‘Scientific’ explanations point towards dopamine deficits and cultural narratives emphasize …
Visions Of Our Future: A Manifesto For Environmentalist Cinema In The Climate Era, Daniel Milovic
Visions Of Our Future: A Manifesto For Environmentalist Cinema In The Climate Era, Daniel Milovic
Honors Scholar Theses
Environmentalism has strengthened as a discipline during the climate era, a period defined by the ongoing effects of climate change, and it is time for a fully environmental activist cinema to emerge. This type of filmmaking must be committed to generating images of our future along a utopian or apocalyptic continuum. This approach allows filmmakers to maintain the gravity of the climate crisis while generating inspiring, alternative futures that are not tied to the current global culture of capitalist exploitation of natural resources and marginalized peoples. Environmentalist filmmakers must then articulate climate change as a cultural issue—one that is produced …

Analysis Of Single Event Transients In Arbitrary Waveforms Using Statistical Window Analysis, James Carpenter
Analysis Of Single Event Transients In Arbitrary Waveforms Using Statistical Window Analysis, James Carpenter
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Window functions are commonly used in data processing to detect transient events or for time-averaging of frequency spectra. A generalized window function is demonstrated using the Ionizing Radiation Effects Spectroscopy (IRES) technique to enhance the measurement of transient anomalies within arbitrary waveforms. The IRES filter convolves time data with a sliding window consisting of a moment-generating function. The resulting time-dependent statistical moments are used to eliminate any steady-state signatures, including noise, and extract transient behaviors. The IRES filter analyzes data from heavy-ion exposures of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) operational amplifiers, laser-induced transients in Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS) phase-locked loops, and simulated transients …

Analysis And Numerical Simulation Of Tumor Growth Models, Daniel Acosta Soba
Analysis And Numerical Simulation Of Tumor Growth Models, Daniel Acosta Soba
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
In this dissertation we focus on the numerical analysis of tumor growth models. Due to the difficulty of developing physically meaningful approximations of such models, we divide the main problem into more simple pieces of work that are addressed in the different chapters. First, in Chapter 2 we present a new upwind discontinuous Galerkin (DG) scheme for the convective Cahn–Hilliard model with degenerate mobility which preserves the pointwise bounds and prevents non-physical spurious oscillations. These ideas are based on a well-suited piecewise constant approximation of convection equations. The proposed numerical scheme is contrasted with other approaches in several numerical experiments. …
Archives Of Facade, Arielle Nord
Archives Of Facade, Arielle Nord
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Fantasy is a genre that seldom includes black characters. When black characters are present, they often lack the same narrative significance, reliability and character growth that is given to white characters. This can lead to poorly written black characters that lack purpose or fall victim to stereotypical roles and troupes. Depicting black characters in this way can further isolate readers who wish to read about black characters, that are more than just stereotypes, within the fantasy genre. This thesis will examine the writing techniques of character coding and the subversion of stereotypes and how they present a way for black …
Click, Click, Boom: A Multi-Level Analysis Of Repeat Firearm Offending In Chattanooga, Tennessee, Katlyn Whittenburg
Click, Click, Boom: A Multi-Level Analysis Of Repeat Firearm Offending In Chattanooga, Tennessee, Katlyn Whittenburg
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Criminologists have long noted the exacerbated rates of firearm-related offending in the United States in comparison to other developed nations. There has been a renewed focus on gun crime in the wake of a recent dramatic reversal of the long-trending decrease in firearm-related violence. Explorations of the factors that contribute to firearm offending are often restricted to large metro areas like Chicago, New York City, and Philadelphia—which may have limited generalizability to more common small and medium sized cities in the United States. This study attempts to address this concern through examination of the factors that contribute to firearm re-offending …
