With over 300 million used annually in the United States, peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVC) are the most commonly used invasive device in the acute care setting1,2. Unfortunately, PIVCs have high failure rates with up to 63% failing prematurely3,4.
Certain intravenous medications categorized as vesicants and irritants are known to cause vein and local tissue injury. The Infusion Nursing Society (INS) created this list based on infusate osmolarity thresholds that increase the likelihood of these complications5.
It is perceived the impact of these medications on larger proximal veins with higher flow rates and improved hemodilution diminishes the likelihood of these complications. …

Sound Marks, Deborah R. Gerhardt, Jon J. Lee
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
A lion roars just before a film rolls. A doughboy giggles. A giant green man laughs a hearty, “Ho, Ho, Ho.” These iconic sounds are all federally registered as trademarks. They identify specific brands and distinguish their products and services from the competition. Human brains treat sounds like these as categorization tools and cognitive shortcuts--ideal trademark symbols. But what about the sounds your favorite toys or electronic devices make? Or those made by a fictional character in the latest blockbuster? This Article tackles these issues and others. We push back against the widely-held belief that all unconventional trademarks--product designs, colors, …
States’ Obligation To Provide For Trans Youth: How Medicaid Requires (Most) States To Provide Access To Puberty Blockers, Grace Worcester
States’ Obligation To Provide For Trans Youth: How Medicaid Requires (Most) States To Provide Access To Puberty Blockers, Grace Worcester
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
Over the last few years, many states have endeavored to strip minor access to gender-affirming healthcare, and these efforts have seen considerable success. By the end of 2023, twenty-two states had enacted legislation that limits youth access to genderaffirming healthcare. In line with these efforts, many states have created policies that exclude Medicaid coverage for gender-affirming puberty blockers--medications that delay the physical changes to one's body that occur with sexual maturity. These efforts contravene guidance from the medical community, which pronounces the importance of access to gender-affirming puberty blockers for transgender and gender-diverse youth, and often considers them medically necessary …

- The clavicle is one of the most fractured bones in the human body.
- Traditional treatment involves conservative management with a sling or immobilization but recently the effectiveness of the approach has been questioned.
- Studies done on the adult population have found higher rates of mal or non-union than previously noted, especially in those with displaced or comminuted fractures.
- The noted malunion or non-union was noted to have effects on shoulder mechanics, pain with overhead activity, and loss of strength and endurance.
- Due to differences in physiology the findings in the adult studies do not necessarily translate to the pediatric population. …
Police-Made Law, Brenner M. Fissell
Police-Made Law, Brenner M. Fissell
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
This Article presents evidence that police are writing laws that they enforce. This newly discovered phenomenon compounds the existing understanding of police “making” law through the exercise of discretion. They make law in a far more direct way, functioning as quasi-legislators at the local level-- identifying a social problem, drafting an offense to address it, and directly proposing their offense for enactment. The conduct targeted, and the reasons for doing so, are diverse. For example, in one city a police chief successfully criminalized public intoxication so that intoxicated people would go to jails instead of hospitals; in another, a chief …

Analysis Of Social Behavior Of The African Great Apes During Feeding And Non-Feeding Contexts, Jessica Hale
Analysis Of Social Behavior Of The African Great Apes During Feeding And Non-Feeding Contexts, Jessica Hale
Master's Theses
The three African great apes, bonobos, chimpanzees and gorillas, despite similar habitats, differ considerably in their sociality and feeding ecology. There have been many studies that have investigated the feeding ecology and social behaviors of these species, but there is extremely limited literature available on how feeding ecology may have affected ape social evolution. Chimpanzees are frugivorous, which forces them into close proximity when foraging given the clumped nature of this resource. Bonobos and gorillas, however, are fallback food consumers, which allow them to spread out as they forage. This thesis project aims to test the hypothesis that differences in …

Entomology Faculty Publications
Considerable research has focused on gene silencing in tree-feeding insects, but how trees recognize and process double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) engineered to target plant pests is unknown. We performed transcriptomic assembly, preliminary differential expression analysis, and in silico annotation on loblolly pine (Pinus taeda, L.) seedlings exposed to southern pine beetle-specific dsRNA. This pilot study sought to elucidate the baseline response of seedlings challenged with insect-specific dsRNA. Treated and untreated seedlings were sequenced and following transcriptome assembly 20 RNAi-related proteins (RRPs) were annotated. Differential gene expression analysis conducted using DESeq2 followed by pathway enrichment revealed 7131 differentially expressed transcripts, of which …

Pediatric Ototoxic Monitoring, Destiny Victoria Padilla
Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones
The prevalence of children living with cancer is estimated to be 129,221 in the United States (National Cancer Institute, 2022). The chemotherapy treatment that these children receive can cause ototoxicity, especially when platinum-based chemotherapy agents are used. Ototoxic monitoring is beneficial for patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment as it allows for treatment modification, dosage modification, early intervention, or auditory rehabilitation to take place based on the patient’s hearing status. This is especially important due to the effect hearing loss may have on children’s development and quality of life. There are several objective and behavioral auditory tests that can be used to …

Threat And Risk Assessment Measurement: A State Of The Science Review, Samuel Hunter, Katherine Parsons, Kelsey Ciagala, Sydney L. Reichin, Matt Allen, Erin M. Kearns, Austin C. Doctor, Joel Elson
Reports, Projects, and Research
Threat and risk assessment are the processes of identifying, assessing, and managing threats of targeted violence prompted by warning behaviors. Threat assessment differs from the traditional operations of law enforcement as it may provide predictive information rather than investigating threats after a violent offense has been committed. Threat and risk assessment examines the escalation of behavior over time and corroborates information from multiple sources to reach a level of concern. Initially developed as a way to prevent assassinations, the tools and approaches around threat assessment have emerged as a violence prevention measure in many settings, including workplaces, schools, universities, and …

Coal Cleat Network Stimulation Through A Combination Of Acidizing And Liquid Nitrogen Fracturing, Mohsen Farrokhrouz, Hamed Akhondzadeh, Yongfei Yang, Faisal U. R. Awan, Stefan Iglauer, Maxim Lebedev, Alireza Keshavarz
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Gas extraction from Coal Bed Methane has proved challenging mainly due to the low permeability of coals. This study investigated a combination of 2 stimulation techniques, Liquid Nitrogen (LN2) fracturing and acidizing, to increase pore structure and cleat network connectivity in coals. Microcomputed Tomography ( -CT) scanning results suggested that a combination of those 2 applications, in either sequence of implementation, has substantial potential in recovering mineralized fractures and inducing new fractures; thus, leading to wide-open cleat networks. X-ray images show that if LN2 fracturing of coal is preceded by acidizing, the stimulation efficiency increases from more than double the …
