Essays On The Labor Market Outcomes And Location Choices Of Military Veterans, Brian Bifulco
All Dissertations
The economic outcomes of military veterans are a persistent source of interest for economists, policy analysts, and the public in the United States. Veterans' outcomes bear directly on the decision of prospective recruits to join the military and current service-members to exit the military, informing policymakers about the long-term sustainability of the all-volunteer force. This dissertation focuses on veterans' economic outcomes by examining their relationship with market entry conditions and the location decisions veterans make when they exit the military.
Chapter 1 examines the earnings and employment outcomes of new military veterans associated with market entry conditions. This chapter intersects …
Embracing Ai With Integrity: Recommendations For Authors And Reviewers At American Business Review, Subroto Roy, Kamal Upadhyaya
Embracing Ai With Integrity: Recommendations For Authors And Reviewers At American Business Review, Subroto Roy, Kamal Upadhyaya
American Business Review
As Editors of the American Business Review (ABR), we are navigating a complex landscape as the rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into academic research unfolds. This digital transformation era offers remarkable opportunities yet poses significant challenges, particularly in educational contexts. As teachers, we've all observed a surge in AI usage among students where outputs often appear coherent initially but may lack depth or relevance to the class content. Many of these instances underscore critical aspects of AI, such as the "black box" problem, where the decision-making processes of AI systems are opaque, making it difficult for users to understand …

A New Look At The Connectedness Between Energy And Metal Markets Using A Novel Approach, Adeolu Olusegun Adewuyi, Olusegun S. Adeboye, Aviral Kumar Tiwari, Emmanuel Joel Aikins Abakah
American Business Review
This study extends the existing literature in this area by examining the conditional connectedness between energy and metal markets using a novel time-varying quantile and frequency connectedness method developed by Chatziantoniou, et al. (2022) based on Ando, et al. (2018) and Barunik & Krehlik (2018) techniques. Connectedness between the markets was analyzed across various times and frequencies, with daily data covering May 18, 2011, to September 23, 2020. Short-term dynamics strongly drive the total pairwise shocks, while the contribution of medium-term dynamics was meagre, and that of long-term dynamics was insignificant. While the natural gas, gasoline, gas oil, heating oil, …

Designing Efficient And Equitable Freight Services Markets For Sustainable Economic Performance, Arim Park, Mark Rodgers, Soohyun Cho
American Business Review
Despite the indispensability of freight trucking services and truckers’ role as critical stakeholders in supply chains, relatively little attention has been paid to analyzing small independent truckers’ roles. Shippers often prefer working with larger trucking companies to the detriment of smaller independent truckers, who must grapple with an inherently disadvantageous job market. Furthermore, in the presence of uncertainty or peak demand periods, trucker shortages can pose significant economic challenges for shippers and downstream customers. In this paper, we propose an analytical framework to address these challenges in efforts to enhance the sustainability of the freight service industry. We formulate and …
The Boundary Conditions Of Optimal Contracting And Managerial Entrenchment: A Simultaneous Two-Equation Vector Autoregression With Exogenous Variables Approach For Chief Executive Officer Compensation And Firm Performance, Juehui Shi, Ngoc Cindy Pham
American Business Review
We apply the vector autoregression with exogenous variables (VARX) approach to integrate the optimal contracting theory, the managerial entrenchment theory, the principal-agent theory, the contextual criteria theory, and the upper echelon theory. Based on this new approach, we discover two middle ground conditions between the boundary of managerial entrenchment and optimal contracting, where CEO non-entrenchment or entrenchment cannot be explained by the managerial entrenchment theory or optimal contracting theory alone. For example, some CEOs are not entrenched when the agency problem is not mitigated, while others are entrenched when the agency problem is mitigated. The results imply that merely mitigating …
From Hr Practices To Hr Performance: A Psychological Ownership Meta-Analysis Across Cultures, Franziska M. Renz
From Hr Practices To Hr Performance: A Psychological Ownership Meta-Analysis Across Cultures, Franziska M. Renz
American Business Review
This study utilizes psychological ownership theory as theoretical framework to examine high-performance work practices, and attitudinal and behavioral performance as associations of psychological ownership on the population level. Psychological ownership describes a mindset which allows individuals to experience ownership feelings for a target (e.g., organization) regardless of legal ownership rights. Further, psychological ownership theory is integrated with and extended by contingency theory to analyze the moderation effects of societal culture. These effects have been assumed for over 30 years but hardly backed by empirical evidence from cross-cultural samples. Thus, this study analyzes data from 351,919 individuals who participated in 139 …
Urban Unemployment Duration Analysis In Post-Reform China, Soumyatanu Mukherjee, Soumya Roy
Urban Unemployment Duration Analysis In Post-Reform China, Soumyatanu Mukherjee, Soumya Roy
American Business Review
We link China’s accession to the WTO with the unemployment duration of urban jobseekers. Using data from the Rural Urban Migration in China (RUMiC) of a survey conducted in early 2008, we construct an inflow sample of those who started a period of joblessness between January 2002 and December 2007 to estimate the unemployment duration for local urban jobseekers. Deploying the Cox Proportional Hazards and Accelerated Failure Time models, we find reduced trade policy uncertainty significantly shortens unemployment duration, with hazard-rate varying across internal in-migrants and urban natives, due to variations in job accessibility and reservation wages.
A Rational Perspective Of Servant Leadership: Towards A Paradigm Shift In Servant Leader Motivation, Kevin J. Hurt, Ross Nolan
A Rational Perspective Of Servant Leadership: Towards A Paradigm Shift In Servant Leader Motivation, Kevin J. Hurt, Ross Nolan
American Business Review
Advocates of servant leadership maintain that altruism is the foundational ethic fueling the success of the servant leader. Thus, the foremost requirement of a servant leader is the possession of a concern for others above and beyond his or herself. Researchers have largely neglected the possibility that servant leaders may be, at least partially, motivated by self-interest. We challenge the current foundational ethic attributed with servant leadership and put forth a new ethical perspective. Reviewing four motivational states, from purely other-centered to purely self-centered, we introduce a conceptual model and argue that the proper ethic to ascribe with servant leadership …
The Effect Of Managerial Ability On The Market Valuation Of Unrecognized Tax Benefits, Chunhao Xu, Xiangge Wang, Shiyou Li, Rachana Kalelkar, Lili Gai
The Effect Of Managerial Ability On The Market Valuation Of Unrecognized Tax Benefits, Chunhao Xu, Xiangge Wang, Shiyou Li, Rachana Kalelkar, Lili Gai
American Business Review
This study examines the effect of managerial ability on the market valuation of unrecognized tax benefits (UTBs). While UTBs are generally associated with significant risks, we hypothesize that highly able managers can enhance the market valuation of the UTBs through their ability and efforts to report high-quality UTBs and retain the economic benefits of tax strategies. Consistent with our expectations, we find that managerial ability positively moderates the relationship between UTBs and firm values. Our additional analyses show that highly able executives can reduce firms’ future overall tax risk and tax settlements. Collectively, our findings suggest that the stock market …

Disavowed: The Downfall Of England's Men, Marriages, And Sense Of Self In The Stories Of D. H. Lawrence, Emily Guido
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
This paper aims to discuss the theme of displacement, specifically of men in early twentieth-century England experiencing the decline of the traditional masculinity model, in the short fiction of D. H. Lawrence. Displacement, fundamentally, it is removing that which belongs in a specific place or home to an unknown, unadapted environment. In the context of literature, displacement can take more abstract shapes, such as cultural, spiritual, and mental displacements that—as most great literature does—arouses our sympathies to the larger groups and concepts for which they stand. In these types of stories, physical displacement becomes the metaphor for these more abstract …

Background: Globally, approximately 50 million couples experience one form of infertility, and 10 million cases of subfertility have been reported in sub-Saharan Africa. Infertility is characterized by a lack of clinical conception among couples who live together for more than one year with regular coitus, without the use of contraception. Factors related to fertility vary by sex and geographical region. These factors include age, lifestyle, infectious diseases, and genetic disorders. In African culture, children are considered a simple inheritance and a measure of masculinity, so efforts are needed to address the growing problem of male infertility in this context. …

Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) have a higher susceptibility to infections compared to those without PCOS. Studies evaluating antibiotic use based on PCOS status are scarce. Therefore, we aimed to (i) assess the associations between self-reported PCOS and antibiotic use, and (ii) whether PCOS treatment and the age at PCOS diagnosis modified the associations above. This cross-sectional analysis used the United Arab Emirates Healthy Future Study (UAEHFS) conducted from February 2016 to March 2023 involving 2063 Emirati women aged 18–62 years. We performed ordinal logistic regressions under unadjusted and demographic-health-characteristic-adjusted models to obtain the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% …

An Investigation Of Information Structures In Dna, Joel Mohrmann
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The information-containing nature of the DNA molecule has been long known and observed. One technique for quantifying the relationships existing within the information contained in DNA sequences is an entity from information theory known as the average mutual information (AMI) profile. This investigation sought to use principally the AMI profile along with a few other metrics to explore the structure of the information contained in DNA sequences.
Treating DNA sequences as an information source, several computational methods were employed to model their information structure. Maximum likelihood and maximum a posteriori estimators were used to predict missing bases in DNA sequences. …

Disrupting Negative Representations Of Queerness In Genre Cinema, Mark Gambino
Disrupting Negative Representations Of Queerness In Genre Cinema, Mark Gambino
Postgraduate
The stigmatisation of queer identities is a constant in cinematic history, especially so in horrorgenre movies. A transgressive and confronting medium, horror cinema presents numerous opportunities to align queer identities with cultural symbols of degeneracy; perpetuating associations that contribute to negative cultural attitudes towards queerness. While public discourse on such topics has advanced to entertain ideas of equity and authenticity in these representations, negative values and attitudes are yet evident in contemporary cultural texts. Therein lay an opportunity to examine how these attitudes and values are perpetuated through history by deconstructing how societal attitudes inform the creation of a text …

Dentistry And The Law: Taking Records When Leaving A Practice, Dan Schulte Jd
Dentistry And The Law: Taking Records When Leaving A Practice, Dan Schulte Jd
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
MDA Legal Counsel Dan Schulte advises on departing partner issues: without contracts, disputes arise regarding records, patient ownership, and practice buyout. Employment and shareholder agreements ensure orderly transitions and protect practice interests. Patient records legally belong to the practice, and transferring them without consent violates laws. Patients can request records, but fees apply. Schulte stresses the importance of agreements to avoid costly disputes and ensure continuity of care.
