Assessing The Role Of Stim1 And Stim2 In Microglial Response To Spinal Cord Injury., Sarayu Alli May 2024

Assessing The Role Of Stim1 And Stim2 In Microglial Response To Spinal Cord Injury., Sarayu Alli

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

Microglia, immune cells of the central nervous system, constantly survey their environment for damage. Once damage is detected, they are activated into become reactive, resulting in morphological changes, such as larger cell bodies, and functional changes, such as releasing inflammatory mediators. The switch from surveying to reactive occurs because the microglia received signals that sense danger in the environment. The release of Ca2+ from intracellular stores is involved in store-operated calcium entry (SOCE), a signaling pathway. Recent studies have shown that calcium release from the intracellular stores is a factor of microglial activation. SOCE is specific to monitoring low calcium …

Christianization In The Roman Empire: Politics, Culture, And Architecture During The Reign Of Emperor Constantine I, Peyton Connor May 2024

Christianization In The Roman Empire: Politics, Culture, And Architecture During The Reign Of Emperor Constantine I, Peyton Connor

History

The Christianization of the Roman Empire under Constantine I (306–337 C.E.) marked a turning point in Late Antiquity. It was an era defined by the legalization, expansion, and integration of Christianity into Roman life. After the Edict of Milan in 313 C.E., Constantine’s policies—including but not limited to his participation in church councils, alliances with bishops, and several administrative reforms—advanced Christianity’s political and social standing while preserving elements of traditional religion. Yet Christianization was not purely a imperial endeavor. Ascetic and monastic movements resisted state influence, and everyday believers adapted their faith within familiar cultural frameworks. Additionally, architecture revealed the …

Playing Myself: The Gothic's Challenge To Audience Identity, Elena Durant May 2024

Playing Myself: The Gothic's Challenge To Audience Identity, Elena Durant

All Theses

This thesis presents close readings of the 2015 video game Bloodborne and Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey in order to illuminate how the Gothic genre challenges identity. Both Bloodborne and Northanger Abbey respond to their genres and are preoccupied with the ways that their audiences might interact with them. Bloodborne’s gameplay directly incentivizes players to reflect on the way that they play the game. Northanger Abbey is a parody of the Gothic novel that reflects just as much on the idea of the reader as it does on the conventions of the genre it parodies. Both of these works are …

The Double-Pivot Network Simplex Method, Jordan Mae Sahs May 2024

The Double-Pivot Network Simplex Method, Jordan Mae Sahs

Mathematics Theses, Dissertations, Research and Student Creative Activity

The network simplex method, a minimum-cost network flow algorithm, was first created in 1956 by George Dantzig to solve transportation problems. This thesis improves upon Dantzig’s method by pivoting two arcs instead of one at each iteration. The proposed algorithm is called the double-pivot network simplex method. Both leaving arcs are determined by solving a two-variable linear program. Due to the structure of these two-variable problems, this thesis also presents an approach to quickly solve them. The network and double-pivot network simplex methods make use of a modified eXtended Threading Index technique to efficiently create cycles and maintain the spanning …
