Mass Tourism Management In Sintra World Heritage Site: The Role Of Tourist Guides, Luis Miguel Brito, Ilidia Carvalho May 2024

Mass Tourism Management In Sintra World Heritage Site: The Role Of Tourist Guides, Luis Miguel Brito, Ilidia Carvalho

International Journal of Tour Guiding and Visitor Attraction Research

Information is power. Tourist guides hold this power as information givers, representatives of the tourists in the sites they visit and vice versa, and they can also persuade the tourists to do what is more convenient in each situation, thus contributing to sustainability through their interpretation. Arguably, in a situation of mass tourism, they can be very helpful. Mass tourism is viewed negatively by various intellectual currents and some critics in the field. It is usually associated with a lack of interest in culture, and it is understood as harmful to nature. It is in opposition to alternative, responsible, and …

Faithful Coverage: The Irish Independent’S Catholic Transformation Of The Spanish Civil War, Willa M. Fahrbach May 2024

Faithful Coverage: The Irish Independent’S Catholic Transformation Of The Spanish Civil War, Willa M. Fahrbach

Young Historians Conference

In the summer of 1936, the Spanish Civil War erupted with a military coup d’etat against the current Republic, launching three years of chaos and casualty. Among the ranks of supporters for the imminent fascist regime were Fascist Italy, Nazi Germany, and shockingly, the majority of Ireland’s citizens. However, their support was not unprompted. The Irish Independent, a popular newspaper, flooded its pages with gory depictions of anti-clerical violence committed by the Spanish Republicans and steered their audience into the kind of righteous sensationalism that would later inspire an Irish Brigade to form on behalf of the fascist regime. …

“The Tin Pan-Tithesis Of Melody”: A Socio-Musical History Of Eastern European Jews In New York 1880-1920, Jascha Stern May 2024

“The Tin Pan-Tithesis Of Melody”: A Socio-Musical History Of Eastern European Jews In New York 1880-1920, Jascha Stern

Young Historians Conference

Influxes of Eastern European Jewish people immigrating to the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries motivated by poor economic and social conditions in their home countries and the appeal of economic opportunity in the U.S. settled in New York City. This event and decades of its aftermath are reflected in American popular music of the era. Tin Pan Alley, consisting primarily of Jewish composers and songwriters, became a metonym for the popular music industry in the U.S. The lyrical and melodic content of songs that came out of this reflect the Jewish-American national duality and Black …

Homecoming Or Homeless: An Exploration Of The Ethno-National Identities Of Japanese-Brazilian Dekasseguis, Malina Yuen May 2024

Homecoming Or Homeless: An Exploration Of The Ethno-National Identities Of Japanese-Brazilian Dekasseguis, Malina Yuen

Young Historians Conference

The return migration of Japanese-Brazilians to Japan from 1990-2008 encapsulates a complex issue of nationality, ethnicity, and belonging between two different cultures who came to depend on each other. Beginning in 1990, Japan instituted a new migration policy that opened the door for second and third generation ethnically Japanese individuals who were living in foreign nations to receive temporary work visas. This allowed for a great amount of migration from Brazil of Brazilians with Japanese heritage. This population is especially significant due to the high level of Japanese immigrants to Brazil during the early 20th century, due to reasons such …

Political Movement Through Cultural Identity: Lessons From The Présence Africaine, Ramona Sapru Henderson May 2024

Political Movement Through Cultural Identity: Lessons From The Présence Africaine, Ramona Sapru Henderson

Young Historians Conference

The Présence Africaine journal was unlike any of the time. Founded in Paris in 1947, its mission centered the expression of African cultures that had been suppressed under French colonial rule. The writers did not share a race or nationality but were united by a shared purpose of creating literary discourse around the colonization of Africa and the struggles of the pan-African movement. The founder, Alioune Diop, was a Senegalese professor who promoted a unique approach to political change. He was aware of the stark cultural losses that the French colonization of Africa was causing and saw the colonial suppression …

Immigrant Identity Formation, A Transnational Approach: Italian Americans In New York City, 1880-1930, Amelia J. Vena May 2024

Immigrant Identity Formation, A Transnational Approach: Italian Americans In New York City, 1880-1930, Amelia J. Vena

Young Historians Conference

Of the Italian immigrants arriving in America during the Great Migration (1880-1924), few understood themselves as “Italians.” On paper, Italian unification took place in 1861, but the creation of Italy as a unit of politics was not the creation of Italians as a unit of nation. Even decades later, immigrants landing in New York City understood themselves in regional terms—as Calabrians, Sicilians, and Neapolitans. “Italian national identity” remained an idea confined to the imaginations of wealthy and educated Italian nationalists. In the years that followed the Great Migration, immigrants reshaped Italian-American identity as they grappled with American ideas of race …

Priscus At The Court Of Atilla: Unveiling Hunnic Dynamics, Jake C. Mccauley May 2024

Priscus At The Court Of Atilla: Unveiling Hunnic Dynamics, Jake C. Mccauley

Young Historians Conference

This paper examines and reevaluates the lasting impacts of Priscus of Panium’s eyewitness account of his ambassadorial trip to Atilla the Hun in 449 CE, dubbed Priscus at the Court of Attila. Through meticulous analysis, this paper attempts to contextualize the presence and military movements of Huns across Europe based on Priscus’ original work. I clarify that Atilla's encampment was in Wallachia while detailing the location's significance and the significance of Hunnic military movements in Media. Moving forward, I use Priscus’ work as a tool to observe the social norms of Byzantium and Scythia ranging from things like their female …

One Ring To Rule Them All: Connecting Johann Herder's Romantic Nationalism & Richard Wagner's "The Ring", Eliana Scheele May 2024

One Ring To Rule Them All: Connecting Johann Herder's Romantic Nationalism & Richard Wagner's "The Ring", Eliana Scheele

Young Historians Conference

In the 18th and 19th centuries in Germany, a new craze was emerging, one that would forever change Germany. The ideas of Nationalism, popularized by Johann Gottfried Herder, revolutionized the way that Germans thought about their country. Through this new kind of "Romantic" Nationalism, an importance was placed on "volksongs," or folksongs and stories as a means to take pride in one’s culture. The massively popular opera epic "The Ring of Nibelung" was written by Richard Wagner over fifty years after Herder's death, but it holds the values that Herder developed in it. In many ways, the Opera is the …

Jewish Immigrants In Argentina: The Bund As A Transnational Connection, Naomi Hemstreet May 2024

Jewish Immigrants In Argentina: The Bund As A Transnational Connection, Naomi Hemstreet

Young Historians Conference

Between 1881 and 1948, thousands of Eastern European Jews immigrated to Argentina, escaping subjugation and seeking economic opportunities. These Jewish immigrants initially worked in the agricultural colonies of the Pampas before settling primarily in Buenos Aires, drawn to the benefits of living in a densely populated city. Jewish socialism abounded, connected with the Bund in Russia and Poland while still existing independently. This paper examines the organization Avangard, the first representation of Bundism in Argentina, and its economic and cultural aims, before exploring Bundist schools in Argentina. I also analyze the secular Jewish schooling movement in Poland in order to …

Applied Theatre For Peacebuilding: Exploring The Value Of Embodied Practice, Emily Machin-Mayes May 2024

Applied Theatre For Peacebuilding: Exploring The Value Of Embodied Practice, Emily Machin-Mayes

Capstone Collection

Arts, storytelling, theatre, and drama have been woven into strategic approaches to peacebuilding after conflict to engage with people’s experiences and emotions, share silenced stories, and build trust and empathy. Applied theatre challenges audience members to take a more active role, either through participating in the storytelling or acting itself or through dialogue and reflection activities. This collaborative art form has been used for community-building, reconciliation efforts as well as in post-conflict settings. This study examines the impact and value of an intensive applied theatre workshop, using participant-observation, and semi-structured interviews. Some of the qualitative findings include the value participants …

Navigating A Multiracial Identity, Emma Zavala May 2024

Navigating A Multiracial Identity, Emma Zavala

Creative Collaborations: Annual Showcase of Undergraduate Research

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, people who identify as two or more races are currently the fastest growing population in the country. However, there is still little awareness of the impact that being multiracial in the United States has on one’s identity and sense of belonging. As such, this research set out to better understand the experiences and perceptions of multiracial young people in the U.S. To this end, I conducted ten hour-long semi-structured interviews and collected thirty responses to a short online survey. Preliminary data analysis indicates that people who identify as “mixed” often have a difficult time …

Tiktok Use, Flow, And Addictive Behaviors, Santiago Vigil May 2024

Tiktok Use, Flow, And Addictive Behaviors, Santiago Vigil

Creative Collaborations: Annual Showcase of Undergraduate Research

Since TikTok's release in 2017, it has become one of the more popular social media apps in the country. TikTok app design exploits sensory preferences through continuous scrolling, providing a seamless infinite amount of content. We hypothesized that TikTok immerses users in an unproductive version of the flow state, that may lead to addiction-like behaviors among users. We also hypothesized that TikTok’s design may be associated with boredom proneness, anxiety, self-esteem, and GPA. Using a correlational measure, USD students were asked to answer self-report measures and questions about their social media use to differentiate between platforms. Using Instagram as comparison …

Our Mechanical Engineers have created a clamping device to apply known forces onto heated sample metals in order to analyze how pressure directly affects the TCR across the contacting area between the tested samples. Our Electrical …

Abortion And The Metaphorical Imagination, Camille Torre May 2024

Abortion And The Metaphorical Imagination, Camille Torre

Creative Collaborations: Annual Showcase of Undergraduate Research

The goal of my research is to discover how and what metaphors shape the framework in which the current abortion discussion is based. I propose that our current conception of abortion and reproductive rights serve to uphold economic underpinnings, and so long as we overlook the role of capitalism in shaping the abortion debate, progress will forever be an illusion. Through the application of metaphor theory, my study seeks to analyze how metaphors contribute to the ideological underpinnings within both the Pro-Life and Pro-Choice movements.

Creative Collaborations: Annual Showcase of Undergraduate Research

This project surveys the work of a selection of female Iranian artists active in the Post-revolutionary era. I was fascinated to see if their experiences while coming of age in Iran during this time helped shape their work. I wanted to see if it created cohesion in their works, that these events created a link to all their works together. This survey includes artists who produced work in and outside of Iran. This study is meant to highlight the work of artists who are not as well-known, expounding on these artists’ work to demonstrate the importance of their voices in …

The Philosophy Behind St. Augustine’S City Of God As A Guide For Contemporary Christians, Hector Rosas May 2024

The Philosophy Behind St. Augustine’S City Of God As A Guide For Contemporary Christians, Hector Rosas

Creative Collaborations: Annual Showcase of Undergraduate Research

In this paper, I aim to find guidance for the ever-increasing conflict Christians have lived in a modern, predominantly secular political society, in which living the Christian faith becomes complex and confusing. As, notably, American political society distances itself from Christianity and increasingly turns secular, there is an urgent need for guidance for those who choose to remain in their faith. For this, I look towards one of the Fathers of the Church, often regarded as one of the most brilliant and influential philosophers and theologians, Saint Augustine of Hippo, as a guide to navigating these difficulties and uncertainties. By …

For our senior design capstone project, we are working in collaboration with the Kapawi Ecolodge, an eco-tourist enterprise in the Amazon Rainforest of Ecuador that run by the Achuar Indigenous community. This community operates on river transportation only and currently uses gas motors, which is very damaging to the environment surrounding them. In order to make their river transportation more sustainable, we are designing a fully functional electric boat system complete with a boat hull and a solar-powered charging station. Our main requirements for our boat subsystem are that it must seat 8-10 people, have a high level of stability, …

Melodies Are Not A Useful Mnemonic Cue For Immediate Word Recall, Isabella Ramirez May 2024

Melodies Are Not A Useful Mnemonic Cue For Immediate Word Recall, Isabella Ramirez

Creative Collaborations: Annual Showcase of Undergraduate Research

Mnemonic devices and jingles paired with a musical melody have long been used as study skills for students to remember the capitals of the United States and other facts, as well as aiding adults in memorizing grocery lists, reminding themselves of English grammar rules, and various other tasks. Though this perceived phenomenon has been recognized by previous studies, research is mixed on the effectiveness of utilizing music in order to improve learning and memory. In the current study, we tested the effects of unfamiliar and familiar melodies on the memorization of unrelated word lists compared to a spoken control condition. …

Nucleopolyhedrovirus (Npv) Effects On Mating Success Of Dione Vanillae Butterflies, Yuriani Palomino May 2024

Nucleopolyhedrovirus (Npv) Effects On Mating Success Of Dione Vanillae Butterflies, Yuriani Palomino

Creative Collaborations: Annual Showcase of Undergraduate Research

Host-pathogen interactions are an important aspect of biodiversity in ecosystems but the rapid changes of climate change has challenged organisms to adapt quickly. In my research, I investigated how nucleopolyhedrovirus (NPV) affects the reproduction of the Dione vanillae, on drought-stressed Passiflora caerulea to mimic changes in their environment. NPV infects individuals at larval stage, when larvae consumes NPV on contaminated P. caerulea leaves. Larvae raised in a lab were selected for a diet of high water or drought-stressed plants, then infected with one of four virus doses. Surviving pupa mated within their treatment groups once emerged as butterflies were successful …

Using Circadian Clock Proteins To Self-Assemble Reconfigurable Materials, Maya Nugent May 2024

Using Circadian Clock Proteins To Self-Assemble Reconfigurable Materials, Maya Nugent

Creative Collaborations: Annual Showcase of Undergraduate Research

Circadian oscillators regulate a variety of metabolic processes. In cyanobacteria, a group of proteins known as KaiA, KaiB, and KaiC regulate the timing of photosynthesis through the rhythmic binding of KaiA and KaiB to KaiC. Previously, we have shown that this system can be repurposed via tagging KaiB with biotin to form bonds with streptavidin coated colloids, allowing for time dependent crosslinking of colloids via KaiB-KaiC complexes. Here we show that this Kai-crosslinking platform can be adapted to a variety of conditions, and map the phase space of dynamic restructuring. We use fluorescence microscopy and image analysis to determine the …

Dynamics And Rheology Of Colloidal Rod Suspensions Measured With Differential Dynamic Microscopy, Laura Morocho May 2024

Dynamics And Rheology Of Colloidal Rod Suspensions Measured With Differential Dynamic Microscopy, Laura Morocho

Creative Collaborations: Annual Showcase of Undergraduate Research

Colloidal rod suspensions form a variety of structures and form arrested phases at relatively low volume fractions. These properties make them excellent rheological modifiers and useful as model systems to understand complex systems like networks of biopolymer filaments. Both macro- and micro-rheology methods have characterized rod suspensions and gels. Here,we use a relatively new microrheology technique, differential dynamic microscopy (DDM), which combines elements of video microscopy and dynamic light scattering. With DDM we explore how the time scale of density fluctuations, form of the intermediate scattering function, and non-ergodicity parameter scale with both rod volume fraction and aspect ratio. Further, we compare …

Are Surf Zones Nursery Habitats For Juvenile Fishes?, Soleil Michaud May 2024

Are Surf Zones Nursery Habitats For Juvenile Fishes?, Soleil Michaud

Creative Collaborations: Annual Showcase of Undergraduate Research

Nursery habitats typically include areas such as estuaries, which provide food, warm water and protection from predators (Sheaves et al. 2015). In Southern California, however, estuaries are not as common as in other parts of the world. The only habitat of similar depth and temperature are nearshore surf zones (Allen and Pondella 2006). For this project, samples were collected by using light traps, which is a net with a light that attracts phototactic larval fish within Mission Bay (SeaWorld Marina) and at the coast (Scripps Pier). The study focused on whether there was difference in abundance and diversity of fish …
