Cognitive Borderlands: Understanding Marginalized Identity In The Work Of Ada Limón, Ashley Hope Pérez, And Carmen Maria Machado, Monica Barbay

English Theses

Gloria Anzaldúa’s groundbreaking theoretical and creative collection of essays entitled Borderlands / La Frontera: The New Mestiza provides foundational ideas and principles to consider the physical, mental, and emotional struggles of those living along the U.S.-Mexican border. This thesis furthers this discussion by contemplating what happens psychologically to those residing in physical and cognitive borderlands, including but not limited to the U.S.-Mexican border. Specifically, I develop a framework to conceptualize borderlands of the mind, focusing on people-groups who experience multiple kinds of marginalization. I argue that these layers of marginalization negatively impact one’s sense of self, fostering a cognitive divide …

Comparing Oxidative Balance Of Summer And Winter Acclimatized Birds, Olivia R. Gulseth May 2024

Comparing Oxidative Balance Of Summer And Winter Acclimatized Birds, Olivia R. Gulseth

Honors Thesis

The oxidative stress system allows air-breathing animals to deal with the potentially harmful byproducts of metabolism. How this system reacts to the increasing thermoregulatory demands in winter for birds from cold winter climates is poorly understood. The purpose of this project was to compare the oxidative balance of summer (warm acclimatized) and winter (cold acclimatized) phenotypes of overwintering songbirds in South Dakota to determine if there is a significant difference between the seasonal phenotypes and among species. Seasonal differences in oxidative balance were expected due to the increased metabolic costs of elevating metabolism to maintain body temperature during winter. Blood …

On December 10, 2015, former President Barack Obama signed the Every Student Success Act (ESSA), which reauthorized the 50-year-old ESEA commitment to equal opportunity for all students (U. S. Department of Education, n.d.). One of the provisions included all students in America be taught to high academic standards that will prepare them to succeed in college and careers. As female college students continued to surpass their male peers in college enrollment and retention, a gap in the literature was found in how AVID and a sense of belonging contributed to their success rate. Through an interpretive, qualitative study, I examined …

Compounding Inequities Through Drug Ip And Unfair Competition, Shweta Kumar May 2024

Compounding Inequities Through Drug Ip And Unfair Competition, Shweta Kumar

IPIPC Papers & Reports

In 2024, the United States experienced its worst drug shortage in over a decade—more than 300 drugs are in shortage, leaving patients without access to lifesaving medicines. Luckily, drug manufacturers are not the only source of drugs. Through drug compounding, licensed pharmacists can create medications that are not commercially available due to discontinuations, shortages, or other supply chain issues. The recent slew of severe drug shortages has forced patients and physicians to rely on compounding pharmacies to make critical drugs for patients—particularly vulnerable patient populations, including pediatric, disabled, and transgender patients—such as mixed amphetamine salts (sold as Adderall), semaglutide (sold …

Exploitation Of The Screaming: Sexual Violence In Horror Film, Chloe Watson

Honors Theses

Sexual violence has been routinely represented in film since the start of cinema, and these representations can vary greatly depending on the time, director, and genre. In the horror genre specifically, representations of sexual violence are common. Male directors, in particular, create stories of female-centered sexual violence, which can come across as authentic or exploitative. Films such as It Follows and Last Night in Soho display sexual violence in more acceptable ways, while films like All Hallows’ Eve and The Devil’s Rejects exploit the experience for various reasons. The exploitative films have detrimental effects on an audience member’s mentality, as …

Purification And Isolation Of Α-Chloro-Β-Lactone Precursor Molecules, Matthew Ellis

Honors Projects

This research investigates the synthesis of α-chloro-β-lactone molecules, focusing on the production, isolation, and purification of two precursor compounds from chloroacetic acid and substituted benzaldehydes. While multiple methods were explored, including EDC, DIC, and DCC catalysis, DCC proved to be most effective in producing higher yields. However, challenges in purification arose due to the formation of byproducts, particularly with DCC, prompting further investigation for efficient extraction and purification techniques. DCC, however, shows a promising route for α-chloro-β-lactone synthesis, despite purification complexities.
