Physical Activity And Knee Health Outcomes After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction, David Werner May 2024

Physical Activity And Knee Health Outcomes After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction, David Werner

Theses & Dissertations

Anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions (ACLR) have increased in incidence worldwide. After ACLR, individuals are at higher risk for developing early onset knee osteoarthritis. Individuals after ACLR also participate in less physical activity (PA), contributing to an increased risk for early onset knee osteoarthritis and poor overall health outcomes.

The two goals of this work were to 1) determine the relationship between PA and knee health outcomes 18 months after ACLR and 2) determine the feasibility and acceptability of a PA intervention early after ACLR that considered participant thoughts and feelings.

Findings for the first goal suggest that there is no …

Toilet Training And Teaching Self-Initiations To Children With Autism Who Use Augmentative And Alternative Communication, Darcy A. Douglass May 2024

Toilet Training And Teaching Self-Initiations To Children With Autism Who Use Augmentative And Alternative Communication, Darcy A. Douglass

Honors Capstones

Within this project, we address the challenges faced by individuals, particularly those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), during toilet training, which often takes longer than neurotypical children. Practitioners who use traditional methods often overlook teaching children how to request bathroom use, especially among those who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices. Drawing from literature and expert recommendations, we summarize the importance of teaching independence in bathroom use for children with complex communication needs by incorporating their AAC devices when teaching toilet training.

Inspired by Perez et al. (2020), who demonstrated positive responses from individuals with ASD to reinforcement-based procedures, …

Childhood Sexual Abuse And The Role Of Experiential Avoidance In College Alcohol Use, Regina Montes May 2024

Childhood Sexual Abuse And The Role Of Experiential Avoidance In College Alcohol Use, Regina Montes

Honors Capstones

Childhood trauma has been related in numerous studies to maladaptive behavior as well as risky behaviors in adulthood, such as alcohol use. However, few studies have focused specifically on the relationship between childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and alcohol use. Moreover, experiential avoidance has been shown to be an important factor in poor behavioral outcomes in young adults with a history of childhood trauma. The present study explores experiential avoidance as a mediating factor of the relationship between CSA and alcohol severity in college students. Data for this current investigation was collected as a part of a larger study of undergraduate …

A Study Of Children With Autism In Illinois General Education Elementary School Classrooms, Zachary V. King May 2024

A Study Of Children With Autism In Illinois General Education Elementary School Classrooms, Zachary V. King

Honors Capstones

The purpose of this study is to gather survey-based information from parents of children with autism who are currently in elementary schools in Illinois to determine whether or not their children are receiving the needs they should get. The parents are asked about their perceptions as to whether or not their children are getting the necessary help with educational, stimulatory, and sensory needs. The survey’s response, though limited, found that while accommodations and support for children with autism have improved in the past 20 years, the matter of addressing maladaptive behaviors may still need some work. This shows that while …

Effect Of Stakeholder Capitalism After The 2019 Business Roundtable Pledge, Maximiliano Villarreal-Castro May 2024

Effect Of Stakeholder Capitalism After The 2019 Business Roundtable Pledge, Maximiliano Villarreal-Castro

Honors Theses

There has been a shift towards a new model of corporate operation, one which prioritizes not only the company shareholders but anyone affected by its operations, i.e., stakeholders. Although many believe this is a path towards a more equitable future, others fear it could cause agency issues. As a result, companies that focus on ESG/Stakeholder Capitalism may experience the adverse effects of slow growth, costing shareholders, employers, and employees in the long term.

To determine if there was an impact from 'The Shift' to an ESG model by the major corporations, this study compared internal (accounting) and external (market) data. …

The key findings of the research suggest that the pressure and velocity …

Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia: Pathophysiology And The Effects Of The Microbiome, Anjali Jacob May 2024

Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia: Pathophysiology And The Effects Of The Microbiome, Anjali Jacob

Senior Honors Theses

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a chronic neonatal lung disease that occurs in over 50% of premature infants. BPD is characterized by damage to the alveoli and bronchioles and improper vasculature formation. It is primarily caused by overexposure to oxygen through mechanical ventilation, but there are other risk factors that make infants more susceptible to BPD. Microbial composition impacts risk for developing BPD, and research is ongoing about the effects of the microbiome on BPD pathogenesis; this information is also valuable for preventative treatment. This paper reviews the normal function of the lungs, pathogenesis of BPD and how it affects normal …

Ketamine Infusion Protocol & Patient Education Pamphlet For Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, Ricardo Aranda, Giles Howard May 2024

Ketamine Infusion Protocol & Patient Education Pamphlet For Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, Ricardo Aranda, Giles Howard

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), formerly known as reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) and causalgia, is a debilitating neurological disease accounting for 1.2% of all chronic pain conditions, with eighty percent being severely disabled (Zhao et al., 2018). Altered pain pathways in CRPS patients result in resistance to traditional methods of analgesia, contributing to poor quality of life and unanticipated hospitalizations. Multiple meta-analysis studies suggest ketamine infusions effectively lower chronic pain scores in CRPS patients. Despite the evidence, a lack of standardized ketamine infusion protocols creates a barrier to provider implementation. This Doctor of Nursing Anesthesia project aimed to develop a …

This study reviewed 28 participants to determine if intentional maternal positioning can promote vaginal birth and increase patient satisfaction. Participants were pregnant women experiencing protracted labor/labor dystocia without a history of prior c-sections, uterine surgeries, or large gestational age (LGA) newborns. Patients who underwent primary cesarean …

Screening For Suicide In Veterans With Cancer, Dina E. Mcneil May 2024

Screening For Suicide In Veterans With Cancer, Dina E. Mcneil

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Veterans are at a higher suicide risk than the general population. Veterans with cancer are at a 47% higher risk for suicide. The Veterans Health Administration has an annual suicide screening requirement, but no requirement for more frequent assessment in this high-risk population. Clinical staff may also be hesitant due to fear and anxiety, serving as a barrier to screening. The objective of this project was to educate oncology clinical staff about risk factors for suicide in veterans with cancer, the use of the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS), referral processes, and local resources, and intended to increase the number …

Visualizing Poems, Qiran Cui May 2024

Visualizing Poems, Qiran Cui

Theses

With its profound expressions of emotion and insights, Chinese poetry has long been revered as a cultural heritage. However, its intricacies often challenge non-Chinese speakers seeking to appreciate its depth. This thesis proposes an exploratory approach to interpreting Chinese poetry, using geometric shapes and motions to discover potential emotional and thematic interpretations. The geometric shapes and their associated motions—circles for continuity, squares for stability, triangles for conflict, and rounded rectangles for historical depth—reflect their psychological and cultural significance in conveying specific emotions within the poems. From Chinese poetry's subjects, structure, content, and emotional resonance, the exploration delves into how visual …
