Studying The History Of Histopathology In Preclinical Medical Education As A Guide For The Uniform Integration Of Radiology In Medical Education, Jeffrey Girardot, Navid Faraji

Student Scholarship

Radiology and pathology, though distinct fields within medical education, share a common foundation in their essential roles for accurate diagnosis and understanding of diseases. While pathology, particularly histopathology, has long been integrated into preclinical medical education in the United States, radiology education has traditionally been less emphasized. This paper examines the historical development of histopathology training in medical education and its central role, contrasting it with the comparatively peripheral position of radiology education. We explore the historical context of medical education in the United States, tracing the integration of histopathology following the Flexner Report of 1910. In contrast, radiology, emerging …

Multiphoton Quantum Sensing, Fatemeh Mostafavikhatam

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

While the fundamental principles of light-matter interaction are well-understood and drive countless technologies, the world of multiphoton processes remains a fascinating puzzle, holding the potential to drastically alter our understanding of how light interacts with matter at its most basic level [1–4]. This rich interplay of light and matter unveils novel phenomena that can be harnessed for sensing with exceptional precision, as exemplified by multiphoton quantum sensing. This thesis delves into the applications of multiphoton quantum protocols, particularly in imaging, communication, and plasmonic sensing, to surpass classical limitations and achieve enhanced sensitivity. We explore the potential of multiphoton quantum processes, …

Mussar And Esotericism In Revolutionary Russia, Martin Zwick May 2024

Mussar And Esotericism In Revolutionary Russia, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper is an introductory comparative look at teachings of two spiritual figures in pre-revolutionary and revolutionary Russia: Rav Yoseph Yozel (Horowitz) and George Gurdjieff. Yozel founded the Novarodok school of Mussar; Gurdjieff founded the spiritual tradition known as “the Work” or “Fourth Way.” There are of course great differences between the Jewish tradition of Mussar, whose literature dates back to the Mishnah but which as a social movement was launched by Rabbi Israel Salantar in the late 19th century, and the Work, with its affinities to Eastern Christianity, Buddhism, and Sufism but with no apparent connection to Judaism. …

تأثير رؤية 2030 في مسعى الرياض لتصبح مدينة ذكية: أولوية القوة الناعمة لاستراتيجية التحول الاجتماعي على القوة الصلبة للبنية التقنية المادية, Tahar Ledraa Prof., Sami Aldubaikhi

Emirates Journal for Engineering Research

School Social Workers Conducting Home Visits: Practice And Perceptions, Sadie K. Kinnarney May 2024

School Social Workers Conducting Home Visits: Practice And Perceptions, Sadie K. Kinnarney

Social Work Doctoral Dissertations

School districts are serving populations of students being faced with more multiplex sets of individual, school, family, and community level risk factors (Berzin & O’Connor, 2010; Boske & Benavente-McEnery, 2010; Frey et al., 2012; Kelly et al., 2010). Many children are unable to respond effectively to the school setting due to the stress in their family’s lives and the stressors in their home environment (Openshaw, 2008). There is knowledge that social and environmental constraints can negatively affect a child’s role in an educational setting and a student’s capability to learn tends to be challenged if their emotional and physical needs …

Reducing The Burden Of Diabetes Mellitus: Is It Achievable?, Rafay Iqbal, Raheel Ahmad, Aisha Ambreen May 2024

Reducing The Burden Of Diabetes Mellitus: Is It Achievable?, Rafay Iqbal, Raheel Ahmad, Aisha Ambreen

Department of Family Medicine

Diabetes mellitus is rapidly on the rise globally, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Pakistan has emerged with the highest prevalence of diabetes by percentage according to recent estimates. Evidence is available for different strategies to reduce this burden. Screening high-risk individuals can reduce burden of undiagnosed diabetes and improve outcomes. Although prediabetes can progress to type 2 diabetes, it has the potential to regress to normoglycaemia as well. Interventions like lifestyle modifications and metformin in high-risk individuals can reduce the risk of progression to diabetes. Furthermore, there is a potential to reverse diabetes in some individuals in the early …

The Lived Experience Of Patients In Feeling Empathy From Nurses When Receiving Care Via Telehealth, Donna L. Cutting May 2024

The Lived Experience Of Patients In Feeling Empathy From Nurses When Receiving Care Via Telehealth, Donna L. Cutting

Dissertations

With the increased use of telehealth, particularly telenursing, there is a lack of literature regarding the portrayal and deliverance of empathy and compassion from the nurse to the patient when physical separation exists, such as when the nurse and the patient are in different locations and "seeing" each other through use of technology.

The aim of this qualitative, phenomenological dissertation study was to describe the lived experience of patients feeling empathy or not from nurses when receiving care via telehealth. Watson's Human Caring Science was the nursing theory used to guide this study. The research question was: What is the …

Data Normalization For Addressing The Challenges In The Analysis Of Single-Cell Transcriptomic Datasets, Raquel Cuevas-Diaz Duran, Haichao Wei, Jiaqian Wu

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND: Normalization is a critical step in the analysis of single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) datasets. Its main goal is to make gene counts comparable within and between cells. To do so, normalization methods must account for technical and biological variability. Numerous normalization methods have been developed addressing different sources of dispersion and making specific assumptions about the count data.

MAIN BODY: The selection of a normalization method has a direct impact on downstream analysis, for example differential gene expression and cluster identification. Thus, the objective of this review is to guide the reader in making an informed decision on the most …

The Case For Curanderismo: A Path To Culturally Competent Healthcare For Hispanic Populations In The U.S., Chloe Cutshall

The Agora

Curanderismo, a traditional healing practice in the Hispanic community, presents a possible opportunity to improve healthcare access and outcomes for Hispanic patients in the United States. However, careful planning and attention to safety and efficacy would be necessary when integrating these practices into the healthcare system. Despite the challenges, this paper argues that the potential benefits warrant consideration. Primary reasons for integration include the presence of significant Hispanic populations that may benefit, more culturally competent and therapeutic care, and improved communication between healthcare providers and Hispanic patients. Research articles and journalistic pieces were analyzed for this paper. The evidence showed …

Serine Deamination By Human Serine Racemase Synergizes With Antibiotics To Curtail The Replication Of Chlamydia Trachomatis, Patricia D. Mott, Arnold H. Zea, Jamiya Lewis, Oygul Mirzalieva, Ashok A. Aiyar

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

The obligate intracellular bacterium, Chlamydia trachomatis, has evolved to depend on its human host for many metabolites, including most amino acids and three of the four nucleotides. Given this, it is not surprising that depletion of a single amino acid in the host cell growth medium blocks chlamydial replication. Paradoxically, supra-normal levels of some amino acids also block productive replication of Chlamydia. Here, we have determined how elevated serine levels, generated by exogenous supplementation, impede chlamydial inclusion development and reduce the generation of infectious progeny. Our findings reveal that human serine racemase, which is broadly expressed in multiple tissues, potentiates …

Identifying Key Evolving Residues That Drive Cid/Cal1 Incompatibility In Drosophila Species, Hayden Yuan, Barbara Mellone May 2024

Identifying Key Evolving Residues That Drive Cid/Cal1 Incompatibility In Drosophila Species, Hayden Yuan, Barbara Mellone

Honors Scholar Theses

The centromere, an essential locus on the chromosome critically important for faithful chromosome segregation during cell division, requires the incorporation of centromere protein A (CENP-A/CID) orchestrated by the chaperone CAL1. This thesis investigates the structural requirements governing the interaction between CAL1 and CID, with a focus on two diverged Drosophila species. Using a combination of structural analysis prediction and cellular assays, I explored the compatibility between the N-terminal region of CAL1 and the L1 domain of CID. Previous results demonstrate species specific interactions between CAL1 and CID, with endogenous Drosophila melanogaster (mel) CAL1 efficiently depositing Drosophila melanogaster CID …
