Bifurcation Analysis For Complex Systems Resilience, Rogelio Gracia Otalvaro, Bryan C. Watson

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

As technology advances, systems are growing in complexity and interactivity. This complexity in systems can become a problem when operating and understanding them. Resilience Engineering studies system behavior in the face of impacts. However, existing methods to measure resilience are limited by the non-linear and dynamic characteristics of contemporary systems. Bifurcation analysis can present a different perspective into Resilience Engineering by examining mathematically how systems behave under changing situations. The hypothesis of this work is: if Bifurcation analysis is performed to a nonlinear system, then it is possible to get information on the resilient properties of the system. The paper …

Attitude Control Testbed In Vacuum, Justin Hartland, Dylan Ballback, Ryan Taylor, Isaac Stitt, Jacob Salazar, Anuhya Suhas May 2024

Attitude Control Testbed In Vacuum, Justin Hartland, Dylan Ballback, Ryan Taylor, Isaac Stitt, Jacob Salazar, Anuhya Suhas

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

The orbital industry is actively growing with a rapid increase in spacecraft injected into orbit each year. Many testbeds exist which make it possible to simulate various aspects of an orbital environment for the purpose of testing these spacecrafts. To simulate spacecraft rotation about three spatial axes in microgravity, many engineers use gyroscopes. However, the rings in these gyroscope systems inherently exert frictional forces on each other and do not account for gravity, which decreases their micro-gravity simulation accuracy. The objective of the Attitude Control Testbed in Vacuum (ACTIV) project is to design a gyroscope that uses electric motors housed …

Assessing Vulnerability To Heat Stress Trends In The Southeast United States, Desiree Knight, Shawn M. Milrad

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

The 4th National Climate Assessment identified extreme heat as a pressing threat to human health in the Southeast U.S. Adverse health impacts are exacerbated throughout the region by climate change, an older and rapidly growing population, and dramatic urbanization. Furthermore, extreme heat disproportionately affects disadvantaged groups, lower-income individuals, and workers in industries that require outdoor labor (e.g., agriculture). This disparity is particularly evident in densely populated metropolitan areas. For human health applications, wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) has been shown to be the most representative heat stress metric for human health impacts. Using WBGT and relative (percentile-based) thresholds for extremes, …

Intelligent Provisioning Of Digital Experience Monitoring Agents Based On Observed Network Service Flows, Jay Kuhne, Peter Clayton-Luce, Steve Holl

Defensive Publications Series

Current network observability discovery and design of network monitoring tools for a network operator is often dependent upon the analysis of a network configuration and anecdotal input from the operator indicating their perceived service-level assurance needs. Specifically, the placement of monitoring agents within a network for such designs is fairly subjective and may not be reflective of the actual usage patterns and utilization of the network for traffic initiated by end-users or applications. This proposal leverages actual network behavior in order to generate recommendations for agent placement, as well as to optimize agent placement and, optionally, to auto-deploy an agent …

Chronic Stress-Induced Neuroinflammation: Relevance Of Rodent Models To Human Disease., Abigail G White, Elias Elias, Andrea Orozco, Shivon A Robinson, Melissa T Manners

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

The brain is the central organ of adaptation to stress because it perceives and determines threats that induce behavioral, physiological, and molecular responses. In humans, chronic stress manifests as an enduring consistent feeling of pressure and being overwhelmed for an extended duration. This can result in a persistent proinflammatory response in the peripheral and central nervous system (CNS), resulting in cellular, physiological, and behavioral effects. Compounding stressors may increase the risk of chronic-stress-induced inflammation, which can yield serious health consequences, including mental health disorders. This review summarizes the current knowledge surrounding the neuroinflammatory response in rodent models of chronic stress-a …

Causal Inference In Ethnographic Research: Refining Explanations With Abductive Logic, Strength Of Evidence Assessments, And Graphical Models, Jeffrey G. Snodgrass, H. J. François Dengah Ii, Seth I. Sagstetter, Katya Xinyi Zhao May 2024

Causal Inference In Ethnographic Research: Refining Explanations With Abductive Logic, Strength Of Evidence Assessments, And Graphical Models, Jeffrey G. Snodgrass, H. J. François Dengah Ii, Seth I. Sagstetter, Katya Xinyi Zhao

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

In their classic accounts, anthropological ethnographers developed causal arguments for how specific sociocultural structures and processes shaped human thought, behavior, and experience in particular settings. Despite this history, many contemporary ethnographers avoid establishing in their work direct causal relationships between key variables in the way that, for example, quantitative research relying on experimental or longitudinal data might. As a result, ethnographers in anthropology and other fields have not advanced understandings of how to derive causal explanations from their data, which contrasts with a vibrant “causal revolution” unfolding in the broader social and behavioral sciences. Given this gap in understanding, we …
