Group 3 innate lymphoid cells (ILC3s) are key players in intestinal homeostasis. ER stress is linked to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Here, we used cell culture, mouse models, and human specimens to determine whether ER stress in ILC3s affects IBD pathophysiology. We show that mouse intestinal ILC3s exhibited a 24-hour rhythmic expression pattern of the master ER stress response regulator inositol-requiring kinase 1α/X-box-binding protein 1 (IRE1α/XBP1). Proinflammatory cytokine IL-23 selectively stimulated IRE1α/XBP1 in mouse ILC3s through mitochondrial ROS (mtROS). IRE1α/XBP1 was activated in ILC3s from mice exposed to experimental colitis and in inflamed human IBD specimens. Mice with Ire1α deletion …
Implications Of Varying Levels Of Social Support And Peer Involvement On The Success Of Baccalaureate Level Nursing Students, Jeana R. Wilcox
Implications Of Varying Levels Of Social Support And Peer Involvement On The Success Of Baccalaureate Level Nursing Students, Jeana R. Wilcox
Dissertations
Nursing programs must be able to recruit and successfully train future nurses in a timely manner. However, some students, appearing adequately prepared in application materials, do not move successfully through baccalaureate nursing education, pass the licensing exam, and enter the nursing profession. Nursing students enter into a strictly prescribed curriculum leaving little time for traditional college environment socialization. Unveiling factors leading to greater persistence to degree attainment will ultimately lead to more nursing graduates needed to counter the current nursing shortage. One Midwestern program recently (2003-2004) lost 28% of incoming junior-level nursing students in the first two semesters (C. Horton, …

Can Beggars Be Choosers? Adaptive Variation In Reproductive Investment Strategies Shapes Family Conflict And Cooperation In Wild Songbirds, Kelly Lynn O'Neil
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
In this dissertation, I investigate the adaptive function of behavioral plasticity related to reproductive strategies in wild songbirds. Specifically, I uncover how various social, physiological, and environmental factors shape dynamics of conflict and cooperation between parents and offspring and among siblings. I performed 2 multi-year field experiments in which I cross-fostered nestlings between broods of wild songbirds, manipulating nestling size asymmetries (in Carolina wrens) and brood size (in prothonotary warblers) while including relevant controls. I observed nests during two developmental stages and used an intricate scoring protocol to quantify nestling begging dynamics, parental feeding decisions, and the distribution of food …
Shakespeare’S Economies Of Hospitality: Broken Comedies, Bad Hosts, And Troublesome Guests, John Henry Sauls
Shakespeare’S Economies Of Hospitality: Broken Comedies, Bad Hosts, And Troublesome Guests, John Henry Sauls
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Abstract Examining four Shakespeare plays for moments of hospitality and inhospitality, the question must be asked, “Is hosting and guesting necessary to maintain strong community?” In this exploration, hospitality is examined in four of Shakespeare’s plays, tracing its effects on the communities within those plays, showing that without hospitable performance, community falters and may eventually break apart. Such exploration of what goes well and not so well with hospitality offers a wealth of insight into cultural studies. Specific characters from these four plays are crucial to this study, as they provide concrete examples of human interactions gone awry and then …

Relationship Satisfaction For Significant Partners Of The Incarcerated: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, Carrie Elizabeth Lund
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The United States incarcerates more individuals than any other country in the world (The Sentencing Project, 2023). Because of this, it is imperative that counseling professionals understand the lived experiences of those impacted by incarceration. Though research exists focusing on the effects of incarceration on children and families, there is still only a small body of research dedicated to understanding how incarceration impacts significant partners of the incarcerated. This study examined the lived experiences of eight significant partners of the incarcerated (SPIs) to better understand the ways in which incarceration impacted their romantic relationship satisfaction. Through the use of Interpretative …

This non-experimental quantitative casual comparative survey study surveyed a sample (n=186) of public elementary (n=90), middle (n=69), and high school (n=57) school administrators (n=57), educators (n=62), and librarians (n=67) from 38 school districts across the state of Tennessee, regarding their perceptions of school librarians’ roles defined in the constructs of the Future Ready Schools – Librarian Framework. Results were analyzed via a one-way MANOVA and post hoc testing, and statistically significant differences in perceptions of the school librarian’s role were identified within the constructs of Use of Space and Time (p =<.001), Personalized Professional Learning (p=.025), Robust Infrastructure (p=.007), and Budget & Resources (p=.020). Statistical significance within these constructs is prevalent amongst comparison groups including the school librarian's role. Educators/teachers scored fulfillment perception higher than administrators and school librarians across all constructs. In contrast, school librarians scored fulfillment perception lower than other groups across all constructs, regardless of whether statistically significant results were found. Results implicate a need for changes to school librarian pre-service and future training to better prepare those entering and working the role to meet the expectations outlined within the Future Ready Schools Librarian Framework. Suggestions for future research and study limitations are also provided.

We’S Tied Boss: The Lived Experiences Of Black Professional Staff At A Historically White Institution During The Black Lives Matter Movement, Angela Smith Kuykendoll
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Although research has been conducted on the lived experiences of Black student affairs professionals and academic advisors at Historically White Institutions (HWIs), the literature is scant in its representation of the larger body of Black Professional Staff (BPS) and their experiences. BPS are undervalued and disregarded and are a vital part of the fabric of HWIs. Drawing on Critical Race Theory in Education, anti-Black racism, and plantation politics, the purpose of this critical race methodology study was to describe how Black Professional Staff experienced and navigated racism at an HWI in the context of the Black Lives Matter movement (BLM). …

Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy And Curricular Decision-Making In Elementary Art Education, Adeline Lynn White
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Contemporary art education fails to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse student population in K–12 schools. Although there is an increased understanding and awareness that culture must become essential to the art education of students, there is a gap in research on how art educators individually and collectively create culturally sustaining curricula and how it is implemented into the classroom and received by students. This holistic multiple-case study addresses the lack of culturally sustaining pedagogy (CSP) in the curricula used by art educators across the United States by examining how five elementary art educators designed opportunities to center student …

Three Essays In Stock Price Crash Risk And Institutional Trading, Hung Dong Cao
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Despite a longstanding debate over the pros and cons of imposing legal liability on corporate directors and officers, there is limited research on how managerial litigation affects a firm’s future stock price crash risk. Essay 1 examines how the change in Nevada corporate law in 2001, which lowers the legal liability of corporate managers of Nevada-incorporated firms, affects the likelihood of future stock price crashes. We find that such a legal change leads to a decrease in stock price crash risk, and the effect is more pronounced for small, young, and weakly governed firms. Further analysis indicates that the decrease …

This dissertation examines the phenomenon of memory sanction erasures against high official in pre-Amarna Eighteenth Dynasty Theban tombs. Memory sanctions are defined as the intentional erasure of the owners’ names, titles, and images on the decorated surfaces of their monuments. Over the course of the Eighteenth Dynasty, from the reign of Hatshepsut through the early years of Amenhotep IV, at least 21 officials fell victim to memory sanction erasures as attested from their decorated tomb chapels preserved in the Theban necropolis. The first goal of this dissertation is to systematically record each erasure currently present in the 21 tombs with …
Methods For The Analysis Of Diffusible Signaling Factors For The Determination Of Elution Activity, Structural Stability And Biological Activity, Brian Hoffman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Biofilms pose a threat to public health. The National Institutes of Health estimate that biofilms are linked to 65-80% of hospital-related infections. Biofilms are a complex network of bacterial cells contained within an extracellular matrix and are 10-1000 times more resistant to common antibiotic treatments. Bacteria within a biofilm utilize a form of intercellular communication known as quorum sensing to regulate many cellular functions including the secretion of the extracellular matrix and dispersal of planktonic cells. Compounds known as diffusible signaling factors (DSF) regulate the formation/degradation of the extracellular matrix. One family of DSF consist of medium chain fatty acid …
Impact Of Parent Reported Adverse Experiences And Other Family Stressors On Child Development And Home Visitation Participation Among Immigrant Families, Fithi Andom
Brown School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines variations in early childhood developmental and socioemotional health as well as level of participation in home visitation among recent immigrant families according to reports of adverse experiences (including poverty, intimate partner violence (IPV), and prior history of child protective services (CPS) involvement), maternal depression, and parent–child relationship measures. The period of early childhood is dependent on positive parenting to support optimum development, but parenting may be particularly sensitive to the detrimental influences of adverse experiences. Less is known about how the relationship between parenting, adverse experiences, and child development may differ for immigrant families. Home visitation has …

The stability of soil organic matter (SOM) that governs soil organic carbon (SOC) storage depends on its characteristics and components, but little is known about how tree species in forest ecosystems affect SOM components and characteristics. In this study, we used FTIR spectroscopy to investigate plantations of two ecologically and economically significant tree species—namely, spruce (Picea spp.) and sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus)—in order to determine how the different litter inputs and root-microbe interactions of these two plantations affect the functional groups, components, and characteristics of their SOM. Soil samples were taken from the topsoil (0–10 cm) and subsoil (10–20 cm). In …

By incompletely understood mechanisms, type 2 (T2) inflammation present in the airways of severe asthmatics drives the formation of pathologic mucus which leads to airway mucus plugging. Here we investigate the molecular role and clinical significance of intelectin-1 (ITLN-1) in the development of pathologic airway mucus in asthma. Through analyses of human airway epithelial cells we find that ITLN1 gene expression is highly induced by interleukin-13 (IL-13) in a subset of metaplastic MUC5AC

Environmental air irritants including nanosized carbon black (nCB) can drive systemic inflammation, promoting chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and emphysema development. The let-7 microRNA (Mirlet7 miRNA) family is associated with IL-17-driven T cell inflammation, a canonical signature of lung inflammation. Recent evidence suggests the Mirlet7 family is downregulated in patients with COPD, however, whether this repression conveys a functional consequence on emphysema pathology has not been elucidated. Here, we show that overall expression of the Mirlet7 clusters, Mirlet7b/Mirlet7c2 and Mirlet7a1/Mirlet7f1/Mirlet7d, are reduced in the lungs and T cells of smokers with emphysema as well as in mice with …
