Comparative Study Of Simulated And Observed Blended Light Curves For Unambiguous Stellar Rotation Period Determinations, Luca Guida, Ryan J. Reynolds, Mariel Lares Martiz, Terry Oswalt
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
Gyrochronology postulates that the age of stars similar in mass to our Sun can be approximated based on their rotational period. With this in mind, determining accurate rotation periods using photometry data from missions such as Kepler, K2, and TESS is vital for accurate stellar age estimates. Blended light curves pose a particular problem: When conducting simple aperture photometry, neighboring targets can taint the resulting light curve. In most cases, this issue makes the data unusable for unambiguous determination of stellar rotation periods. In this poster, we outline our research project, which aims to provide a solution to the issue …

Assessing Bacterial Quorum Sensing Through Measuring Bioluminescence With Vibrio Fischeri Exposed To Simulated Microgravity, Paulina Slick, Maria C. Tobarra, Alba Chavez, Hugo Castillo
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
Bacteria flourish in stressful environments when communicating with each other in a process known as Quorum Sensing. This process is accomplished by the production of small signaling molecules referred to as Autoinducers (AI). This communication allows the bacteria to alter their gene expression in an effort to regulate their cell number, behavior and sense the surrounding environment. The space environment provides stressful conditions for bacteria as they are exposed to radiation and microgravity (µG). Because of this, it could be possible that bacteria become more virulent and resistant to antibiotics. The purpose of this research was to expose Vibrio fischeri …

Assess The Effect Of Electrical Flight Bag (Efb) On General Aviation Pilot Situation Awareness In Different Conditions, Dongguang Yu
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
As GA pilots increasingly prefer using Electrical Flight Bags (EFBs) in their daily flights, concerns about their safety also arise. Further research is needed to understand their impact on the human factor construct. The crucial aspect of human-computer interaction (HCI) plays a vital role in determining the effectiveness and safety of flight operations, particularly in relation to situation awareness (SA). This study aims to compare with paper-only and raise the research questions on whether there is any significant difference in the SA of GA pilots when using EFBs. Furthermore, will the mounting position of EFBs affect pilots’ SA? A total …
Application Of Matrices For Facial Recognition, Henry Peters
Application Of Matrices For Facial Recognition, Henry Peters
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
Facial recognition has grown exponentially, driven by complex techniques such as artificial intelligence. There remains a need for simple, low-cost systems that can compare faces to pre-constructed data sets. Here we utilize the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to process photos with numerous identifying variables and linearly reduce them into a matrix so that we can efficiently compare faces stored in a database. Two methods were used side by side to demonstrate effectiveness and results. Both methods took the facial scan and processed it into large vectors. Then placed those vectors into a large matrix where each column represents a face, …

Cross Section Analysis Of Factors Affecting Interstate Migration In The United States, Kasey Thomas
Bryant University Undergraduate Journal
This paper investigates the factors influencing interstate migration in the United States of America. This study incorporates political affiliations and income and property tax policy into an existing migration determinants model. This is done to examine the influence of policy or potential future policies on an individual’s decision-making in addition to household factors. The greatest factors influencing an individual's decision to move are the average January temperature, the income tax rate, and the number of hazardous waster sites in the state.

Analyzing The Air Mask Fit For Bearded Commercial Airline Pilots., Hannah Lyons, Gavin Weinheimer, Cecilia Zoutewelle, Ezra O'Connell, John French
Analyzing The Air Mask Fit For Bearded Commercial Airline Pilots., Hannah Lyons, Gavin Weinheimer, Cecilia Zoutewelle, Ezra O'Connell, John French
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
There is a widespread belief that facial hair reduces the effective seal of airline pilots' oxygen masks, thereby decreasing protection from hypoxia during emergencies like rapid decompression. Many airlines argue that beards prevent pilots from safely controlling the aircraft and have instituted policies banning them, although the FAA leaves this up to individual airlines while also claiming mask effectiveness could be impaired by facial hair.
A group of commercial pilots funded a study at the College of Aviation High Altitude Lab (HAL) to assess the effectiveness of standard masks during simulated exposure to 30,000 ft altitude. The participants, pilots and …
An Empirical Daisy Chain Method For Determining Wide Binary Star Ages Based On Cluster Data, Aldir Moreira
An Empirical Daisy Chain Method For Determining Wide Binary Star Ages Based On Cluster Data, Aldir Moreira
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
Determining the age of any star is one of the most difficult challenges in astrophysics. Gyrochronology is the observed correlation between a star’s period of rotation and its age. We are using wide stellar binary pairs in an attempt to calibrate the rotation-age relation. Components in each pair are the same age and so should have rotation periods commensurate with the gyrochronology paradigm.
We are experimenting with a “daisy chaining” method, which has the potential to map a band of constant age across the plot of rotation period vs. color index (a proxy for age) using wide binary pairs. Preliminary …
Ages Of White Dwarf Stars, Alisa Tiselska, Ted Von Hippel Dr., Allyson Woodruff
Ages Of White Dwarf Stars, Alisa Tiselska, Ted Von Hippel Dr., Allyson Woodruff
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
We are developing a technique to determine the age of formation of the Galactic thin and thick disks based on the properties of white dwarfs. To achieve this goal, we calculated the U, V, and W velocity components for thousands of white dwarfs with parallaxes and proper motions from Gaia, yet without radial velocities. With a missing component of the space velocity and overlap in the UVW distributions of these three stellar populations, we determine probabilities that each white dwarfs belongs to one of these Galactic populations. We classified 101,418 likely thin disk white dwarfs, 3158 likely thick disk white …

The Magneto-Active Propellant Management Device (MAPMD) system is designed to address safety hazards in liquid-propellant spaceflight caused by sloshing. This innovative system of Magneto-Active Slosh Control surpasses traditional passive slosh baffles by reducing mass, improving surface wave suppression, and minimizing volumetric intrusion (Santhanam 2012). In prior fight experiments conducted in collaboration between Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and Carthage College, remnant slosh suppression was observed, however the effective slosh damping did not meet our expectations due to inadequate control forces. We are redesigning the magnetic membrane with multiple layers of ultrahigh-permeability metallic glass film and are developing an optimized configuration of current-carrying …

Petroleum extraction generates substantial quantities of produced water, a challenge compounded by water scarcity in oil-producing regions, notably the Middle East. Leveraging produced water effectively, adhering to environmental standards, can offer a viable solution to the issue of water scarcity. This study explores the potential of mandarin peels as an available, cost-effective adsorbent for treating synthetic aqueous solution simulated to oil-field produced water, specifically targeting phenol, a dangerous pollutant. Employing a batch-mode adsorption unit, six operational factors—phenol concentration, acidity, agitation speed, contact time, adsorbent dose, and temperature—were investigated. Results revealed an inverse relationship between phenol removal and pH, concentration, and …
