A Survey Of Collegiate Voice Students With Asthma And Allergies And Their Perceived Impact On Singer Health And Performance Experiences – A Pilot Study, Nicole D. Jenkins

Dissertations, 2020-current

An increasing body of research evidence indicates that college students of all majors with asthma and/or allergies represent a vulnerable population due to their inability to experience a consistent and dependable quality of life compared with their healthy collegiate peers. Further, in terms of their impact specifically on collegiate singers, the intricate network of co-morbid conditions associated with asthma and allergies, including pain, wheezing, and discomfort combined with physical symptoms of stress, disturbed sleep, fatigue, diminished concentration, depression, and high-risk behaviors, cannot be underestimated. As such, this study aims to identify and analyze the health impediments caused by asthma and/or …

While philanthropic studies have been conducted for centuries, little information exists regarding factors that impel donors to make financial donations to environmental nongovernmental organizations (ENGOs). The phenomena surrounding human motivation have been studied via numerous lenses providing information focused on various domains of interest e.g., poverty alleviation, provisioning of educational opportunity, disease eradication, disaster relief, etc. The theoretical framework for this study was Self-Determination Theory (SDT). This study focused specifically on U.S. citizens and the motivational factors that impel said citizens to make monetary contributions to ENGOs. Ten participants ages 18 and over who had donated to an ENGO in …

The Sexual Experiences Of U.S. Married Black Evangelical Christian Women, Latisha Woods

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

When learning about sex, a person's cultural identity can include messages about how sex is to be experienced. For Evangelical Christians, those messages are connected to religious doctrine and beliefs. For women, in general, those messages can be tied to what is considered appropriate sexual behavior. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the role that messages stemming from the intersecting identities of religion, gender, and race play in the sexual experiences of married Black evangelical Christian women. This study's theoretical framework and research design was Benner’s interpretive phenomenology. Upon use of convenience sampling, semistructured interviews were conducted …

Enrollment at the University of Mississippi is at an all-time high. As one of the smallest public universities within the Southeastern Conference (SEC), Ole Miss has faced many changes within the past few years because of its growing population. This research answers the question: “How are offices and departments on campus managing their efforts to accommodate an increased number of students?” Through interviews with faculty, staff, and students on campus, I identified multiple departments who had to adjust their usual practices. These include housing, parking and transportation, advising offices within each school, admissions, and other student services. All these factors …

The Design And Optimization Of An Ethylbenzene Production Process, Alexander Koons

Honors Theses

Ethylbenzene is a foundational organic compound used as a reactant in styrene production. The objective of this thesis is to present the optimization of the in-house production process of ethylbenzene, aiming to avoid external procurement for the downstream styrene manufacturing facility. The process underlines a strategic approach to enhance the yield and cost efficiency of the production of ethylbenzene. An economic analysis revealed a promising net present value of approximately $57.6 million. This thesis not only proposes a viable route for internal ethylbenzene generation but also discusses optimizing the chemical production processes for enhanced efficiency and sustainability.

Social Justice Education And The Ela Classroom: A Love Letter To My Future Teaching, Azurrea Curry May 2024

Social Justice Education And The Ela Classroom: A Love Letter To My Future Teaching, Azurrea Curry

Honors Theses

Social justice education can be defined in part as the equitable treatment and care of all students, as all have the right to education. It requires that we examine oppression and unjust systems to develop awareness of injustice in our lives, institutions, and overall society. Social justice education aims to develop empathy and tools for activism in order to teach students (and teachers) how to radically and positively interrupt oppressive patterns and behaviors in the world around us. Social justice education must work co-curricularly with statewide standards. Furthermore, it must also be rooted in the personal reflection of educators as …

Structural And Blood Co-Factor Binding Studies Of A Red Algal Sulfated Galactan, Anderson R. Dewitt May 2024

Structural And Blood Co-Factor Binding Studies Of A Red Algal Sulfated Galactan, Anderson R. Dewitt

Honors Theses

The red alga Botryocladia occidentalis presents three distinct fractions of sulfated polysaccharides. The elucidation of structures of various B. occidentalis fractions has been explored in prior research. In this study, the first fraction with the least sulfation underwent NMR structure elucidation. Additionally, this sulfated polysaccharide underwent analysis following chemical modifications. Findings have unveiled the presence of both 4-linked α- and 3-linked β-galactose units with the following chemical characteristics: over half of the total galactose units are unsulfated, the α-units are primarily 3,6-anhydrogalactose units either 2-O-methylated or 2-O-sulfated, and the β-galactose units can be 4-O-sulfated or 2,4-O-disulfated. Results from SPR-based assays …

Assessing The Economic Consequences Of Sewage Overflows On California Housing Values, Nathalie M. Nyanga May 2024

Assessing The Economic Consequences Of Sewage Overflows On California Housing Values, Nathalie M. Nyanga

Master's Projects and Capstones

Sewage overflows (SSOs) represent a critical environmental challenge in California, and the impact of SSOs on housing prices is a vital issue. The study aims to determine how the frequency of sewage overflow events affects housing price fluctuations and conduct an event study. Employing linear, lasso, ridge, and random forest regression analyses, the study predicts the severity of overflow. Notably, lasso regression emerges as the most effective model for predicting housing prices in the event of an SSO occurrence. Additionally, the event study analysis provides insights into the factors influencing housing prices.

Unraveling The Paradox Of The 'Great Speciators': Evolutionary Dynamics Of A Geographic Radiation Of Island Kingfishers (Todiramphus), Jenna Merle Mccullough May 2024

Unraveling The Paradox Of The 'Great Speciators': Evolutionary Dynamics Of A Geographic Radiation Of Island Kingfishers (Todiramphus), Jenna Merle Mccullough

Biology ETDs

The paradox of the ‘Great Speciators’ describes a biogeographic pattern in which geographically widespread lineages have strong overwater dispersal capabilities, yet exhibit genetic and phenotypic divergence between islands, suggesting limited dispersal and cessation of gene flow. In my dissertation, I leveraged whole genomes and two comprehensive trait datasets of dispersal ability and plumage coloration of all described diversity within Todiramphus kingfishers, a rapid radiation of largely island endemic ‘Great Speciators.’ Chapter 1 reveals that whole genome datasets do not outright solve the evolutionary relationships of this clade and that widespread incomplete lineage sorting (ILS) and gene flow are sources of …

Providing early literacy training for children is a vital part of establishing the foundation for the learning they will do for the rest of their lives, so it is important that we do the right work from the start. Unfortunately, too many children are still reading below grade level by third grade, and instead of reading to learn new materials, they are still trying to learn to read. At Van Buren Elementary School, there are many challenges for students and teachers. The school’s Free and Reduced lunch rate is over 86%, the students receiving English to Speakers of Other Languages …
