Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

This dissertation presents research into the paleobiogeography and paleoecology of the Western Interior Seaway (WIS) and Gulf Coastal Plain (GCP) during the Late Cretaceous. The dataset utilized here includes an extensive record of marine invertebrates from over 200 years of fossil collecting and sedimentary data collated from over 45 different literature sources, representing approximately 17 million years of deposition. The high-resolution of this dataset, and its extensive geographic distribution and temporal duration, make it ideal for exploring various ecological questions. Using these data, I have attempted to reconstruct paleobiogeographic provinces as published in prior works, explore functional diversity patterns, and …

History In The Present Tense: News And History On The Radio, 1924-1944, Steven R. Kostelecky May 2024

History In The Present Tense: News And History On The Radio, 1924-1944, Steven R. Kostelecky

History ETDs

This dissertation addresses questions about the contested claim to an authoritative historical voice on American radio from its earliest days in the 1920s to its role in the Second World War in the 1940s. My major arguments involve, first, how the development of radio news in the 1930s took on the nature of “history in the moment” with live event programming—something its rival, the newspapers could not do. Secondly, with the press of world events, I argue, history and the news increasingly seemed to dovetail into the other on the radio, and the American Historical Association debated the most effective …

The first section of this paper provides a brief history of the cultural and political influences on Cyprus, and an introduction to common practices in the Cypriot folk tradition. The second section details the process of transcribing the original tune from Alkinoos Ioannides’ arrangement, creating the final arrangement …

Effects Of Background Music Characteristics On Working Memory Capacity, Rachel S. Tan May 2024

Effects Of Background Music Characteristics On Working Memory Capacity, Rachel S. Tan

Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current

The use of background music as a distractor can either enhance or hinder task performance depending on how various characteristics of the music influence participants’ arousal. However, existing studies on this topic lack direct manipulation of the physical characteristics of the music, instead using different musical excerpts. The lack of direct manipulation introduces confounding musical variables present in the musical stimuli. This research project examined how specific attributes of background music influence working memory by playing digitally manipulated musical stimuli while participants completed the Sternberg Digit Span task, a standard measure of working memory and processing speed. The test stimuli …

"I Feel Like He's Looking In The Computer World To Be Social, But I Can't Trust His Judgement": Reimagining Parental Control For Children With Asd, Prakriti Dumaru, Bryson D. Hackler, Audrey Flood, Mahdi Nasrullah Al-Ameen

Computer Science Faculty and Staff Publications

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often seek comfort from devices (e.g., smartphones) to deal with social overstimulation. However, such reliance exposes them to inappropriate digital content and increases susceptibility to mimicry and social vulnerability. Thus, parents having children with ASD encounter unique challenges in regulating their device usage, which are little addressed in the existing literature on parental mediation. As we begin to address this gap, we designed low-fidelity prototypes centered around open communication and self-regulation, which we refined based on the feedback from six ASD experts in two focus groups. We evaluated updated designs (presented in the form …

Radical Explorations Of Radical Empiricism: William James’S Transmissive Theory Of Mind In The Context Of Visionary Experience, Rita Spellman May 2024

Radical Explorations Of Radical Empiricism: William James’S Transmissive Theory Of Mind In The Context Of Visionary Experience, Rita Spellman

Religious Studies Theses and Dissertations

The dominant ontology in science is a form of materialism and it filters down into the social sciences in ways I will touch on throughout this paper. The influence of the current dominant ontology is especially apparent when it comes to experiences and phenomena that challenge its underlying assumptions which is why I will primarily focus on visionary experience and psi phenomena as studied by radical empiricists throughout the ages.

The philosophical position of William James challenges materialist assumptions by championing the idea that the only world we can speak of is the world of our experience. William James affords …

Neuro-Symbolic Commonsense Reasoning With Resistance To Data Poisoning: A First-Order Logic And Sub-Symbolic Embeddings Framework, Bryce Shurts, King-Ip Lin May 2024

Neuro-Symbolic Commonsense Reasoning With Resistance To Data Poisoning: A First-Order Logic And Sub-Symbolic Embeddings Framework, Bryce Shurts, King-Ip Lin

Computer Science and Engineering Theses and Dissertations

Commonsense reasoning has long presented a hurdle between conversational agents and their ability to naturally engage with humans in conversation, as the infinitely dimensional nature of a dialogue’s topics presents a significant reasoning challenge in the study of Natural Language Understanding (NLU). Such a system must conceivably be able to act as a generalizable system for evaluating and reasoning about commonsense statements, problems, and queries: in this way, the agent can attempt to quantify the reasonability of a given input. We attempt to address this through the integration of an explainable neuro-symbolic system that leverages Logical Tensor Networks (LTNs) and …

Engineering Composite Gridlines For Improved Solar Module Reliability, Andre Chavez May 2024

Engineering Composite Gridlines For Improved Solar Module Reliability, Andre Chavez

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Renewable energy sources, such as solar power, are rapidly expanding worldwide to meet increased energy demands. However, these sources are exposed to challenging environmental stressors, such as extreme wind, heavy snow loads, and hailstorms that can cause irreversible damage to the crystalline semiconductor solar cells. Today, single crystalline silicon solar cells dominate the market, and our work is focused on improving their reliability against environmental stressors. One of the main degradation mechanisms caused by environmental stressors is cell cracks. These microcracks can go virtually undetected and lead to reduced power output from solar modules over time. To solve this engineering …

Blind Evaluation Framework For Fully Homomorphic Encryption And Privacy-Preserving Machine Learning, Hunjae Lee May 2024

Blind Evaluation Framework For Fully Homomorphic Encryption And Privacy-Preserving Machine Learning, Hunjae Lee

Computer Science and Engineering Theses and Dissertations

Various approaches to privacy-preserving machine learning (PPML) using Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE) have been developed, focusing on secure data outsourcing to untrusted servers by data owners. While FHE enables arithmetic operations on encrypted data, it struggles with integrating control structures like decision statements essential for machine learning models. Because of this, FHE is used primarily for arithmetic tasks. Non-arithmetic programming logic, such as control structures, are handled outside the encrypted domain using Interactive Rounds of Decryption and Evaluation (IRDE), where encrypted data is periodically decrypted for plaintext processing, highlighting the challenge of direct evaluation on encrypted data.

While non-interactive inference …

With the rapid advancement of computing capabilities, computational chemistry has become increasingly indispensable in both experiment design and the interpretation of experimental outcomes. Wave-function-based quantum mechanistic methods are highly sought after for their ability to provide high-accuracy data and their potential for systematic improvement. However, to extend their applicability to larger molecules, it is essential to employ rank-reducing approximations to these methods. This dissertation dedicates Chapters Three and Four to the development of rank-reduced methodologies. Additionally, beyond single-point energies, molecular geometries and properties of molecule-excited states hold paramount importance across diverse fields of chemistry. Hence, Chapter Five presents the work …

The Lipid-Heart Hypothesis And The Keys Equation Defined The Dietary Guidelines But Ignored The Impact Of Trans-Fat And High Linoleic Acid Consumption, Mary T. Newport, Fabian M. Dayrit May 2024

The Lipid-Heart Hypothesis And The Keys Equation Defined The Dietary Guidelines But Ignored The Impact Of Trans-Fat And High Linoleic Acid Consumption, Mary T. Newport, Fabian M. Dayrit

Chemistry Faculty Publications

In response to a perceived epidemic of coronary heart disease, Ancel Keys introduced the lipid-heart hypothesis in 1953 which asserted that high intakes of total fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol lead to atherosclerosis and that consuming less fat and cholesterol, and replacing saturated fat with polyunsaturated fat, would reduce serum cholesterol and consequently the risk of heart disease. Keys proposed an equation that would predict the concentration of serum cholesterol (ΔChol.) from the consumption of saturated fat (ΔS), polyunsaturated fat (ΔP), and cholesterol (ΔZ): ΔChol. = 1.2(2ΔS - ΔP) + 1.5ΔZ. However, the Keys equation conflated natural saturated fat and …

Exploring The Complex Landscape Of Proteins: From Intrinsically Disordered Proteins To Peptidomimetics Through Computational Approaches, Tongtong Li May 2024

Exploring The Complex Landscape Of Proteins: From Intrinsically Disordered Proteins To Peptidomimetics Through Computational Approaches, Tongtong Li

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Protein function is closely related to their three-dimensional structures. However, some proteins lack a well-defined structure, so-called intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs). They prefer to interconvert among different conformations in isolation and undergo a disorder-to-order transition upon binding to a partner. IDPs or proteins with intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs), constituting a large portion of the human proteome, are involved in many cellular activities and are therefore highly relevant to our health. In my dissertation, I used computational methods to systematically study systems including dynamic proteins, disordered proteins in complex with their targets, and synthetic peptidomimetics to reveal the unique physical properties …

Ngo, Ngo-Ing, Ng-Gone: Ngos And Their Social Ramifications In Jordan, Caroline Leonard May 2024

Ngo, Ngo-Ing, Ng-Gone: Ngos And Their Social Ramifications In Jordan, Caroline Leonard

Honors Theses

Recent literature has debated the viability and efficacy of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) when they are constrained both by written law and by regulations placed by larger funding agencies. However, there has been less research into comparisons of NGOs within a country, especially when they receive different levels of government restriction. One such case is in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, a constitutional monarchy that has three unofficial designations for its NGOs and non-profit organizations: Royal NGOs (RONGOs), quasi-governmental organizations (QONGOs), and NGOs. The relationship between these NGOs and the Jordanian Government is further complicated by Jordan’s complicated relationship with civil …

Can Vice Make Us Virtuous? The Effects Of Greed Reminders On Charitability, Hayley Pitts May 2024

Can Vice Make Us Virtuous? The Effects Of Greed Reminders On Charitability, Hayley Pitts

Honors Theses

Historically, society wishes to encourage people to be good – but also warns against being bad. There is little comparison between the two of which works: the threat of damnation through vice, or the promise of salvation through virtue. This study examines how each of these affect donation behavior. There are two studies within the present research, each with 149 participants randomly assigned into three categories: control, vice, and virtue. Participants were distracted then asked to view an image based on their randomly assigned category, followed by a donation question: would participants donate a $1.00 bonus to a local charity, …

Moral Arguments For Water Justice And The Jackson Water Crisis, Benjamin Oliver May 2024

Moral Arguments For Water Justice And The Jackson Water Crisis, Benjamin Oliver

Honors Theses

Across the United States, residents of towns and cities find themselves increasingly concerned with their water supply. In 2022, attention shifted to Jackson, Mississippi, as over 150,000 residents of the majority Black capital city were left without clean water. In this thesis, I discuss this case study as well as cases in Baltimore, Maryland, Flint, Michigan, and Newark, New Jersey, finding that across these cities, there exist patterns of environmental racism and divestment in public resources. Crisis is soon to follow when these patterns compound with the climate change consequences of more intense weather and pollution. To discuss this pattern …

The Effects Of Processing Tasks On False Memories, Caroline Lewis

Honors Theses

The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects that three different processing tasks had on the rate of false memories. Participants were randomly assigned into a story condition, survival condition, or a pleasantness condition. Using a word list that had three groups of ten words each connected to a nonpresented critical word, participants were asked to process the words using instructions based on their given condition. Processing occurred through written sentences, which was then followed by a short mathematical distraction test. Participants were then given time to recall all of the words presented on the list by …
