Take and drink.” The command, rehearsed countless times before, nevertheless rolled forward slovenly, tripped on the edge of Privett’s tongue, and tumbled over his sharp chin into the ears of his parishioner. The recumbent old woman, still chewing with the monotonous motion of an outdated machine, bent her neck awkwardly. Privett lowered the cup. Through a gap in the blinds, a ray of sunlight momentarily caught hold of it, arresting the glass midair. The suspended wine glistened with shards of gold. Then Privett’s arm moved again, and the room’s habitual shadows extinguished it. Like a tiny blind organism creeping toward …

Individualism And A False Christ, Benjamin Wagner May 2024

Individualism And A False Christ, Benjamin Wagner

Grapho : Concordia Seminary Student Journal

I once sat down with a well-read church historian to inquire about what makes the American Church distinct from those of the past two millennia in Christian tradition. Instead of rambling on about megachurches, televangelists, the prosperity Gospel, Christian liberalism, or anything of the sort, I received a rather blunt and uneventful answer. Immediately after my mouth closed, the historian replied, “The American Church is very individualistic.” From there, the conversation drifted into the fall of Christianity in the West, the rise of secularism, and the general spiritual deadness permeating the atmosphere of America. In the Historian’s mind, there was …

Letter From The Chairman, Kyle Moellenhoff May 2024

Letter From The Chairman, Kyle Moellenhoff

Grapho : Concordia Seminary Student Journal

The theme for this year’s journal, “With Eyes of Faith,” was selected to fit with the Seminary’s theme for the academic year, “Let us Fix our Eyes on Jesus.” As I pondered this theme it was the word “eyes” that stood out most. The Lutheran tradition, with its rich theology of the proclaimed Word, tends to focus heavily on the ears. After all, Paul says that “faith comes from hearing” (Rom 10:17). But with all this salutary emphasis on hearing, we should not neglect the role that the eyes play in the life of faith.

Sex Offenders’ Cognitive Self-Change In Group Treatment: A Pre-/Posttest Study, Malinda Rae Peterson May 2024

Sex Offenders’ Cognitive Self-Change In Group Treatment: A Pre-/Posttest Study, Malinda Rae Peterson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Wisconsin policy makers implement sex offender treatment programs with the purpose of decreasing reoffending while increasing safety for victims and communities. Research has suggested that the cognitive behavioral therapy group curriculum, Thinking for a Change (T4C), has been effective for offenders; however, this program’s key component of cognitive self-change among sex offenders has yet to be researched. The purpose of the current study was to fill a gap in T4C research and, specifically, explore whether sex offender probationers gained the T4C component of cognitive self-change as compared to non-sex offender probationers from Wisconsin. Beck’s cognitive behavioral theory was used as …

Sustaining Principals In Native Serving Schools, Marsha Hubbell-Espinosa

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Rural schools struggle to recruit and sustain quality educational leaders and systems that contribute to student success. Rural Native American schools pose more of a challenge because of the unique cultures that play a role in sustaining leaders in their communities. I explored the reasons for high principal turnover in rural Native American serving schools. I conducted a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews to collect narratives related to turnover from eight current, former, and retired principals. The stories of these principals provide a direction for recommendations for approach, strategy, and fundamental culturally responsive leadership that is unique to rural Native …

The unexplained protective effect of childhood adiposity on breast cancer risk may be mediated via mammographic density (MD). Here, we investigate a complex relationship between adiposity in childhood and adulthood, puberty onset, MD phenotypes (dense area (DA), non-dense area (NDA), percent density (PD)), and their effects on breast cancer. We use Mendelian randomization (MR) and multivariable MR to estimate the total and direct effects of adiposity and age at menarche on MD phenotypes. Childhood adiposity has a decreasing effect on DA, while adulthood adiposity increases NDA. Later menarche increases DA/PD, but when accounting for childhood adiposity, this effect is attenuated. …

It has been found that when a layer of activated carbon partially fills the space behind a finite, edge-constrained, tensioned impermeable membrane, the absorption peaks due to the modal response of the membrane can be significantly enhanced in the low frequency range. In the present work, the modeling aspects of the latter work have been extended to allow the membrane to be both tensioned and flexurally-stiff, and further, to be micro-perforated, thus expanding the treatment design space. Secondly, the particle layer behind the membrane is modeled by using a two-dimensional finite difference implementation of the Biot poro-elastic theory which then …

Granular Activated Carbon Sound Absorption Predictions Made Using Measured Material Parameters, Huawei Yang, Tongyang Shi, Guochenhao Song, J Stuart Bolton

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) is hierarchical porosity material that yields better in low frequency sound absorption performance compared with many traditional porous materials due to the sorption effect created by nanometer-scale pores within the particles. In 2017, a triple porosity model accounting for the sorption effect in the micropores was proposed by Venegas et al. In the proposed model, some of input parameters (i.e., mesopore size and micropore effective diffusion coefficient) were fitted by matching the model to measured the surface impedance of a GAC stack; however, some fitted values are questionable from an inorganic material perspective. In the present …

The Suzuki Method: History, Philosophy, And Contemporary Implications, Catherine Begin

Research Papers

Abstract

The Suzuki method emphasizes early musical intervention, involvement of parents/caregivers, and a musical home environment as foundational tenets of its philosophy. Parent involvement and home environment in general education (PI-HE) and in music (PI-HEM) has been operationalized and explored in a growing body of research. Most existing PI-HEM research has measured elementary and instrumental students in grades 4-12, while few studies have measure PI-HEM in preschoolers aged 3-5. Further exploration of the Suzuki Method through the lens of contemporary PI-HE literature could reveal a more specific understanding of the Suzuki Method in our modern landscape so that a conversation …

Preserving Shawnee Identity Through European Trade: How European Trade In Lower Shawneetown Expressed Indigenous Independence, Kelsey Grace Tuggle May 2024

Preserving Shawnee Identity Through European Trade: How European Trade In Lower Shawneetown Expressed Indigenous Independence, Kelsey Grace Tuggle

Online Theses and Dissertations

The residents of Lower Shawneetown utilized trade to express independence from colonizing European powers. Unconventionally, the Shawnee articulated their freedom from colonization through direct trade be and diplomacy with European governments in the New and Old Worlds. The dynamics of trade in Lower Shawneetown were volatile, reflecting changes in Shawnee conceptualization of independence. European traders did not understand their actions through Shawnee colonial liberation, instead believing Lower Shawneetown trade furthered colonization efforts. Due to this inherent misinterpretation of Shawnee trade practices, European powers frequently engaged in hostilities against each other to court Lower Shawneetown’s favor.

Medical-Legal Partnerships Reinvigorate Systems Lawyering Using An Upstream Approach, Kate L. Mitchell, Debra Chopp

Articles

The upstream framework presented in public health and medicine considers health problems from a preventive perspective, seeking to understand and address the root causes of poor health. Medical-legal partnerships (MLPs) have demonstrated the value of this upstream framework in the practice of law and engage in upstream lawyering by utilizing systemic advocacy to address root causes of injustices and health inequities. This article explores upstreaming and its use by MLPs in reframing legal practice.

Michigan Tech Publications

Mixed-phase clouds (MPCs) are key players in the Arctic climate system due to their role in modulating solar and terrestrial radiation. Such radiative interactions rely, among other factors, on the ice content of MPCs, which is regulated by the availability of ice-nucleating particles (INPs). While it appears that INPs are associated with the presence of primary biological aerosol particles (PBAPs) in the Arctic, the nuances of the processes and patterns of INPs and their association with clouds and moisture sources have not been resolved. Here, we investigated for a full year the abundance of and variability in fluorescent PBAPs (fPBAPs) …

A Study Of Gate Valve Supply Chain And Life Cycle Impacts, Saud Bindarwish May 2024

A Study Of Gate Valve Supply Chain And Life Cycle Impacts, Saud Bindarwish

Theses

and sustainable water supplies depend on water infrastructure. However, old infrastructure, especially valves that leak and break, can cause significant water loss, economic strain, and environmental damage. This study explores best choice of gate valves to use while replacing defected existing gate valve in the networks by examining gate valve supply chains and their life cycle consequences. Traditional gate valve supply chains are lengthy and complicated. Extracting iron ore and copper destroys habitats and pollutes air and water. Factory processing and production of these materials increases energy use and air/water pollution. Valve shipping, usually overseas, emits lots of greenhouse gases. …

High All-Cause Mortality And Increasing Proportion Of Older Adults With Tuberculosis In Texas, 2008–2020, Belinda A Medrano, Miryoung Lee, Gretchen Gemeinhardt, Lana Yamba, Blanca I Restrepo May 2024

High All-Cause Mortality And Increasing Proportion Of Older Adults With Tuberculosis In Texas, 2008–2020, Belinda A Medrano, Miryoung Lee, Gretchen Gemeinhardt, Lana Yamba, Blanca I Restrepo

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) elimination efforts must consider the global growth of the ageing population. Here we used TB surveillance data from Texas, United States (2008-2020; total n = 10656) to identify unique characteristics and outcomes in older adults (OA, ≥65 years) with PTB, compared to young adults (YA, 18-39 years) or middle-aged adults (40-64 years). We found that the proportion of OA with PTB increased from 15% in 2008 to 24% in 2020 (trend p < 0.05). Diabetes was highly prevalent in OA (32%) but not associated with adverse outcomes. Death was 13-fold higher in OA compared to YA and was 7% at the time of diagnosis which suggests diagnostic delays. However, once TB was suspected, we found no differences in culture, smear, or nucleic acid detection of mycobacteria (although less lung cavitations) in OA. During treatment, OA had less drug-resistant TB, few adverse reactions and adhered with TB treatment. We recommend training healthcare workers to 'think TB' in OA, for prompt treatment initiation to diminish deaths. Furthermore, OA should be added as a priority group to the latent TB treatment guidelines by the World Health Organization, to prevent TB disease in this highly vulnerable group.

Psychosocial Determinants Of Suicidal Ideation Among Thai Women, Raya T. Albataineh May 2024

Psychosocial Determinants Of Suicidal Ideation Among Thai Women, Raya T. Albataineh

Dissertations

According to a Thai Public Health Ministry spokesman, more than 300 Thai individuals commit complete suicide per month, making Thailand the nation with the third-most suicides in the world. Despite the high rates of suicidal ideation in Thai adult women, the predictors associated with suicidal ideation rates are still unknown. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine those predictors, specifically the extent to which quality of life, intimate partner violence, social support, employment status, partnership status, and parenthood status predict suicidal ideation in this population.
