Sacramento Suburban Water District V. 3m Co., Loui E. Amos

Public Land & Resources Law Review

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (“PFAS”), popularly known as “forever chemicals,” have seeped into drinking water supplies across the country. Almost all Americans have an accumulation of these substances in their blood, creating serious health risks. This exposure has created a vast unknown liability for the manufacture of these chemicals. But who should pay for the remediation of the water supply and the health effects of PFAS exposure? Mass toxic tort litigation has become ineffective, with jurisdictional hurdles and defendants’ creative techniques to sidestep judgments, such as corporate bankruptcy strategies. This ineffectiveness demonstrates the need for a long-term strategy comprising legislative …

The De-Domestication Of Ornithopus Sativus Brot. To Develop Cultivars With Physical Dormancy (Hardseed), Robert J. Harrison, Bradley J. Nutt, Ronald J. Yates, Belinda F. Hackney, John G. Howieson May 2024

The De-Domestication Of Ornithopus Sativus Brot. To Develop Cultivars With Physical Dormancy (Hardseed), Robert J. Harrison, Bradley J. Nutt, Ronald J. Yates, Belinda F. Hackney, John G. Howieson

Grain and Other Field Crops Research Articles

Ornithopus sativus Brot. (French serradella) is a forage legume that is well adapted to acidic coarse textured soils (sands) which are characterized by poor nutrition and an inability to retain water. During the process of domestication of O. sativus, there was an unintentional loss of seed physical dormancy (PY) thus compromising its self-regeneration after a cropping interval. Through mass screening of seed, we identified for the first time that heritable sources of PY exist in three populations of O. sativus. This rare genetic material was then incorporated into suitable genetic backgrounds of differing maturity through targeted hybridization. We demonstrated …

Principal Literacy Leadership Perspectives And Practices, Megan Patricia Shay May 2024

Principal Literacy Leadership Perspectives And Practices, Megan Patricia Shay

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Current elementary data from a large suburban district in the eastern part of the United States demonstrate that less than half of students in Grades 3 through 5 are demonstrating sufficient literacy achievement as measured by state assessments. This problem is of great concern since strong literacy achievement is fundamental to student success in school and preparation for college and career. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore the perspectives of elementary principals from this district on their role and practices as leaders in their students’ literacy achievement. The conceptual framework for this study is Murphy’s model …

Prolonged Ulcerative Laryngitis., Sugosh M Anur, Lauren E Melley, Robert T Sataloff May 2024

Prolonged Ulcerative Laryngitis., Sugosh M Anur, Lauren E Melley, Robert T Sataloff

Otolaryngology (ENT) Resident Research

Ulcerative vocal fold lesions occupy the vibratory margins of the musculomembranous portion of the vocal folds and cause dysphonia. Symptoms may exist for several weeks to months before improvement occurs. Lesions observed on strobovideolaryngoscopy may resemble malignant leukoplakia and tempt physicians to obtain biopsy. Biopsy can cause permanent dysphonia and should be performed only when necessary. Therefore, it is important to identify prolonged ulcerative laryngitis and provide appropriate management.

Memoryscapes: A Study Of Memory And Experience In Architecture, Jacob Granger May 2024

Memoryscapes: A Study Of Memory And Experience In Architecture, Jacob Granger

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

Thesis statement

Architecture and urban spaces are fundamental in shaping both personal and collective memories, serving as the physical manifestations of narratives that define and inform community identity and individual experiences. This thesis asserts that urban design and architectural features extend beyond their utilitarian functions to actively craft and influence these memories. By intertwining intentional design with memory, architecture not only reflects but also molds our understanding of communal identity and historical narratives. This perspective offers a unique exploration of the interplay between tangible structures and the intangible experiences they foster, illustrating how architecture does not merely mirror reality but …

Watering A Dying Canopy: How Peter Berger Can Help Us Understand Communication In A Modern Age, Julia M. Richardson May 2024

Watering A Dying Canopy: How Peter Berger Can Help Us Understand Communication In A Modern Age, Julia M. Richardson

Student Scholarship

In many instances of conflict and confusion, effective communication can be a useful tool in solving problems. When individuals experience a breakdown in communication, it can be frustrating as well as harmful for everyone involved. This autoethnography seeks to explain and remedy issues of communication breakdown through the lens of religious theory, primarily with regard to Peter Berger’s ideas of world construction and maintenance. When once taken-for-granted “worlds” that provide stability become threatened, one way communities respond is by isolating themselves from ideas which pose a threat to their way of life. In a new age of pluralism, this isolation …

Falling Through The Protection Gaps: Inappropriate Protection Of Climate Displaced Persons In The International Refugee Legal Structure, Nischala Mcdonnell May 2024

Falling Through The Protection Gaps: Inappropriate Protection Of Climate Displaced Persons In The International Refugee Legal Structure, Nischala Mcdonnell

The Transnational Human Rights Review

The nexus between climate change and forced human mobility is recognised within the international climate legal framework through the vehicle of loss and damage; however, this nexus is absent in international refugee law. Cross-border climate displaced persons have not yet received official legal status nor protection as a consequence of this legal void in international refugee law. This is largely due to two interconnected and unresolved issues: first, definitional controversy in categorising climate-forced cross-border mobility; and second, the high threshold set by Article 1A(2) of the Refugee Convention inclusion requirements to receive international protection. Cross-border climate displaced person claims remain …

Taking ‘Third World’ Lives Seriously: Decolonising Global Health Governance To Promote Health Capabilities In The Global South, Uchechukwu Ngwaba May 2024

Taking ‘Third World’ Lives Seriously: Decolonising Global Health Governance To Promote Health Capabilities In The Global South, Uchechukwu Ngwaba

The Transnational Human Rights Review

Behind glib claims of universalism in global health, evidenced by the push for universal health coverage in the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 (SDGs), lies an uncomfortable truth about the unequal, uneven and broken system of the existing framework for global health governance. A situation made more evident by the behaviour of powerful states of the Global North at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic through the hoarding of vaccines, refusal to accommodate waivers to the Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) regime to allow cheaper versions of the Covid-19 vaccines to be manufactured for the Global South and the …

An Examination Of The Framing Of Canada’S Copyright Exclusive Rights And Exceptions From A Human Rights Perspective, Justice Ogoroh, Zachary Lomo

The Transnational Human Rights Review

This paper examines the intersection of the framing of copyright law in Canada from the perspective of human rights. The study seeks to reconcile the rights of creators with public access to content. Asserting that copyright law is not a human right but a means to uphold the inherent human rights of both creators and the public. This study explores the legal instruments that articulate a copyright framework that aims to achieve the reconciliation of the rights of creators and the public. The discussion begins with the roots of copyright in Canada, tracing back to the Statute of Anne, and …

Faculty Publications

We report the development of an experimentally-validated computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model for simulation of an anhydrous HCl electrolyzer. The experimental data from 3 membrane variants was used to provide kinetic and membrane parameters for the model. The model not only accurately simulates overall electrolyzer performance, but it also provides key insights into the transport phenomena within the electrolyzer. The model allows simulation of experimental parameters like high HCl flowrates and increased cell pressure that pose a high safety risk to researchers. The model shows hotspots in the temperature distribution that will need to be addressed by flow field modification …

Turkish Journal of Botany

During a biodiversity survey in the Western Taurus Mountains (Antalya, Türkiye), a new species of the genus Knautia (Dipsacoideae, Caprifoliaceae), K. sivridaghense, was discovered. The new species, which is characterized by its dwarf caespitose perennial habit, is found in rocky places under mixed forests at elevations of 1400–1450 m. Knautia sivridaghense is distinguished from its morphologically similar species, K. goecmenii, especially by its dwarf caespitose perennial habit, unbranched stems, length of involucral bracts, and other floral characteristics. Our phylogenetic analyses based on the nuclear ITS and chloroplast petN(ycf6)-psbM regions confirm its placement within Sect. Tricheroides, contributing to the understanding of …
