Characterization Of Perceptual Spaces From Triadic Similarity Judgments, Jonathan Victor
Characterization Of Perceptual Spaces From Triadic Similarity Judgments, Jonathan Victor
MODVIS Workshop
Perceptual spaces are mental workspaces that organize a sensory or cognitive domain into a format that supports functions such as comparison, grouping, learning, and generalization. Determining the geometry of a perceptual space – i.e., the properties of the perceptual distances within the space -- is thus crucial not only to understand these intermediate levels of processing at an algorithmic level, but also as a starting point for comparison with neural measures of similarity. While perceptual spaces are often taken to be Euclidean or nearly so (the classic example is trichromatic color space), this assumption, when tested, is often violated. Moreover, …

A Foveated Model Of Visual Discrimination Based On Windowed Texture Statistics, Jan W. Kurzawski, William F. Broderick, Eero P. Simoncelli, Jonathan Winawer
MODVIS Workshop
Most information from visual scenes is discarded by the human nervous system and thus cannot influence visual behavior. Here, we investigated the loss of spatial pattern information. This loss increases dramatically with eccentricity. Recently, models have been developed that average image features in pooling windows whose diameters scale with eccentricity. These models can be used to synthesize “metamers” of natural scenes, images which are physically different but perceptually indistinguishable. Psychophysical experiments have identified the maximum window scaling for which model discrimination abilities match human performance (“critical scaling”). If images are synthesized with pooling windows that exceed critical scaling (“supercritical scaling”), …

Protecting Public Land From Trespass: Why The Six-Year Statute Of Limitations In 28 U.S.C. § 2415(B) Is Appropriate For All Trespass Cases On Federal Land, Zach Fader
Pace Environmental Law Review
The United States has the authority to bring claims for trespass on federal land under the statutes of the state in which the trespass occurs. Many states have statutes that codify and often alter the elements of common law trespass while also providing for double or treble damages. Thus, in cases of trespass on federal lands, the government is incentivized to bring claims under state trespass statutes. Doing so adds an alternate theory of liability and maximizes the opportunity to recover adequate damages. 28 U.S.C. § 2415(b), in part, sets a six-year statute of limitations for when the United States …

Fighting Climate Gentrification In The Courts, Samantha Blend
Pace Environmental Law Review
Climate gentrification, a specific type of gentrification that occurs when the impacts of climate change displace lower-income communities, will likely increase in severity as climate change worsens. While policies such as inclusionary zoning may be the most efficient way to combat climate gentrification, litigation can fill gaps that may arise in such policies. This Note examines potential causes of action for climate gentrification litigation and their likelihood of success. Based on an examination of the different causes of action and their likelihood of success, this Note concludes that climate gentrification litigation can help legitimize the issue of climate gentrification and …

Topics in Exercise Science and Kinesiology Volume 5: Issue 1, Article 5, 2024. Studies have reported that non-exercise nature immersion (e.g., sitting) and green exercise increase connectedness to nature. The sitting was long, and the exercise was moderate-to-vigorous. And whether the scales used are valid and test-retest reliable is unclear. The main purpose of this study was to determine whether brief sitting and walking in green space affects connectedness to nature. The second purpose was to evaluate the concurrent validity of the Visual Analog Scale-Nature (VAS-N) with the Love and Care for Nature Scale (LCN). The third purpose was to …
