Investigating The Effects Of Male Size And Pronotal Glowspots On Female Courtship Behaviour Of The Glowspot Cockroach (Lucihormetica Verrucosa), Ella X. Whitaker, Jane Akerman, Alexander D.M. Wilson May 2024

Investigating The Effects Of Male Size And Pronotal Glowspots On Female Courtship Behaviour Of The Glowspot Cockroach (Lucihormetica Verrucosa), Ella X. Whitaker, Jane Akerman, Alexander D.M. Wilson

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Lucihormetica verrucosa (Blattodea, Blaberidae) are highly sexually dimorphic cockroaches, with the males having two symmetrically organised ‘glowspots’ on their pronotum. The spots can range in colour from whitish-yellow to red, depending on the quantity of carotenoids in their diet. These spots auto-fluoresce when exposed to UV wavelengths, with the amount of fluorescence inversely related to the carotenoid content. The diet-dependent aspect of the pronotal spots insinuates that they are a fitness-dependent trait and thus inform sexual selection, but existing studies have not directly investigated the role of the pronotal spots in courtship behaviour. Invertebrate sexual selection is commonly informed by …

Introduction, Reuven Brandt

The Journal of Contemporary Legal Issues

In April 2022 a multidisciplinary group comprised of researchers from the Institute for Practical Ethics at the University of California, San Diego and the University of San Diego School of Law began organizing a conference on the matter of conscience protections in law and ethics. At the time we could not know that our chosen subject would catapult in importance. But just two months later the Dobbs decision shattered the constitutional right to abortion that had stood for a half century. On the tail of this decision many states enacted laws making it extremely difficult, if not impossible, to terminate …

Conscience Clauses And Institutional Policies: Applicability Of Employment Law And Medical Ethics, Mark A. Rothstein May 2024

Conscience Clauses And Institutional Policies: Applicability Of Employment Law And Medical Ethics, Mark A. Rothstein

The Journal of Contemporary Legal Issues

This article explores the possibility of using employment law-based tort actions for wrongful discharge to permit healthcare professionals to invoke a positive right to provide medically appropriate, institutionally prohibited care. Although the scope and implications of conscience clauses and policies are extremely broad, the article focuses on the role of physicians in the provision of abortion-related services, which raises the central issues in their sharpest and most controversial context.

Part II of the article considers legislative and institutional policies on conscience clauses and some of the scenarios in which they arise. Part III reviews federal legislation and regulations on conscience …

Conscience Or Disobedience? Comments On Dov Fox, “The Lopsided Law Of Medical Conscience”, Samuel C. Rickless May 2024

Conscience Or Disobedience? Comments On Dov Fox, “The Lopsided Law Of Medical Conscience”, Samuel C. Rickless

The Journal of Contemporary Legal Issues

I am grateful to have been asked to comment on Dov Fox’s excellent and thought-provoking paper. Fox argues that “the conscience regime that governs American healthcare is broken.” By this, he means that whereas conscientious healthcare deniers are protected in various ways by state legal systems, conscientious healthcare providers are not similarly protected. This, argues Fox, is both morally unjust and legally indefensible. Instead, he claims, we should replace our tattered and unjust conscience regime with one that vindicates most forms of conscience, whether they involve denial or provision of healthcare, for those who invoke it in good faith, though …

The Many Faces Of Conscience: A Comment On Professor Mcleod, Steven D. Smith May 2024

The Many Faces Of Conscience: A Comment On Professor Mcleod, Steven D. Smith

The Journal of Contemporary Legal Issues

Professor McLeod’s paper has two parts. The first part is about the value of conscience as a general matter. Why should we respect and try to accommodate conscience anyway? The second part is a more specific argument related to abortion: Professor McLeod argues that although the consciences of medical professionals who are committed to providing abortions and of those who are opposed to performing abortions are both valuable, the former group—that is, the abortion providers—should receive greater accommodation. It is likely that this more specific argument is of greater interest to the participants in this conference. But time is …

Valuing Conscience And The Conscientious Provision Of Abortions, Carolyn Mcleod May 2024

Valuing Conscience And The Conscientious Provision Of Abortions, Carolyn Mcleod

The Journal of Contemporary Legal Issues

In this paper, I hope to do two things. First, I want to show that we should take the ability of physicians to act on their conscience seriously, because normally something important is at stake in allowing them to do so. That’s true regardless of what their views are on abortion. There is value in allowing physicians to act conscientiously, whether that action involves the conscientious provision or conscientious refusal of abortions. I will argue that the value of acting conscientiously supports a system that regulates these two types of action symmetrically. Here, I will draw on a theory about …

The Future Of Health Care Conscience Laws Post-Dobbs, Nadia N. Sawicki May 2024

The Future Of Health Care Conscience Laws Post-Dobbs, Nadia N. Sawicki

The Journal of Contemporary Legal Issues

The Supreme Court’s rejection of a constitutional right to choose abortion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization has prompted legislatures to make significant changes to state laws. Some states have criminalized abortion in most circumstances, while others have granted patients and health care providers broader rights to choose and access abortion. Another, perhaps less-recognized, avenue for legislative change is by amending existing state conscience laws. This Article describes the avenues state legislatures might take in using conscience laws to impact abortion access in accordance with the state’s policy preferences.

Crisis Of Conscience In Post-Roe America, Elizabeth Sepper May 2024

Crisis Of Conscience In Post-Roe America, Elizabeth Sepper

The Journal of Contemporary Legal Issues

This essay proceeds in four parts. Summarizing my previous writing, Part II explains that since Roe, the law has systematically favored refusing individuals and institutions. This asymmetry was unjustified, because “[c]onscience equally may compel a doctor or nurse to deliver a controversial treatment to a patient in need.” After Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the asymmetry may deepen. In restrictive states, Part III contends, the crisis of conscience for willing providers will increase, even as rights to refusal expand. Part IV identifies several possible complications for the legal framework governing conscience in medicine. It suggests that as …

Environmentally Relevant Concentrations Of Triphenyl Phosphate (Tphp) Impact Development In Zebrafish, Benjamin Schmandt, Mfon Diduff, Gabrielle Smart, Larissa M. Williams May 2024

Environmentally Relevant Concentrations Of Triphenyl Phosphate (Tphp) Impact Development In Zebrafish, Benjamin Schmandt, Mfon Diduff, Gabrielle Smart, Larissa M. Williams

All Faculty Scholarship

A common flame-retardant and plasticizer, triphenyl phosphate (TPhP) is an aryl phosphate ester found in many aquatic environments at nM concentrations. Yet, most studies interrogating its toxicity have used µM concentrations. In this study, we used the model organism zebrafish (Danio rerio) to uncover the developmental impact of nM exposures to TPhP at the phenotypic and molecular levels. At concentrations of 1.5–15 nM (0.5 µg/L–5 µg/L), chronically dosed 5dpf larvae were shorter in length and had pericardial edema phenotypes that had been previously reported for exposures in the µM range. Cardiotoxicity was observed but did not present as cardiac looping …

I then used Brayboy’s TribalCrit as my theoretical framework to elicit themes from my experience, many of which became a personal reflection on how my languages have become a new part of my life. This study also frames my father’s knowledge as essential towards …

The Plagiarism Question Of Ai: How Teachers Have Responded To Llms In The Classroom, Anthony E. Wolf May 2024

The Plagiarism Question Of Ai: How Teachers Have Responded To Llms In The Classroom, Anthony E. Wolf

Master's Theses

This study is a phenomenology conducted in the Spring of 2024 that interviews seven educators to bridge the gap between speculation and the observable realities of the current applicability of Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini. Interviews recorded pedagogical methods, classroom policies concerning LLMs, and various methods used to detect and address the use of LLMs for plagiarism. The findings seem to imply a relationship between the applicability of LLMs to teachers’ pedagogical methods and the policies that teachers implemented. Discussion is made through the lens of critical digital pedagogy, zone of proximal development, and Paperson’s …

Supporting Mentors Of Color In Charter Schools Through Collaborative Practices In A Teacher Induction Program, Kanako T. Wong

Doctoral Dissertations

This study determined the impact of three professional collaborative practices in an existing mentor training course within a California Teacher Induction Program (TIP). Three research questions guided this study: How do collaborative methods shift mentors’ conceptualization of mentoring novice teachers? What is the relationship between conceptualizations of mentoring and conceptualization of organizational status and hierarchy? and To what extent do global forms of collaboration support mentors’ professional development?

A phenomenologically-inspired qualitative case study was used to explore how collaborative practices could facilitate reflective, critical, dialogic conversations among mentors in charter schools. A racialized lens of mentorship fueled the findings. Through …

The role of the mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC) in regulating ferroptosis is not fully elucidated. Here, we reveal that pharmacological inhibition of the ETC complex I reduces ubiquinol levels while decreasing ATP levels and activating AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), the two effects known for their roles in promoting and suppressing ferroptosis, respectively. Consequently, the impact of complex I inhibitors on ferroptosis induced by glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) inhibition is limited. The pharmacological inhibition of complex I in LKB1-AMPK-inactivated cells, or genetic ablation of complex I (which does not trigger apparent AMPK activation), abrogates the AMPK-mediated ferroptosis-suppressive effect and sensitizes …

RNA transcribed from enhancers, i.e., eRNA, has been suggested to directly activate transcription by recruiting transcription factors and co-activators. Although there have been specific examples of eRNA functioning in this way, it is not clear how general this may be. We find that the AT-hook of SWI/SNF preferentially binds RNA and, as part of the esBAF complex, associates with eRNA transcribed from intronic and intergenic regions. Our data suggest that SWI/SNF is globally recruited in cis by eRNA to cell-type-specific enhancers, representative of two distinct stages that mimic early mammalian development, and not at enhancers that are shared between the …

Teaching Medical Procedural Skills For Performance, Kersi Taraporewalla, Paul Barach, André Van Zundert May 2024

Teaching Medical Procedural Skills For Performance, Kersi Taraporewalla, Paul Barach, André Van Zundert

College of Population Health Faculty Papers

Procedures are a core element of medical professional practice. Today's training approach was formulated in the mid-twentieth century based on a computer analogue of the brain. Despite minor modifications, the system has remained relatively unchanged for the past 70 years. It delivers competence. However, competence is not reliable performance. The inability to adapt to the variety of patients and variations in the performance environments, such as the operating room, results in patient morbidity and mortality. There is a need for changes in the development and training of medical procedural skills based on current theories of skill acquisition, movement theory, and …

H1-Conforming Finite Elements On Nonstandard Meshes, Samuel Edward Reynolds May 2024

H1-Conforming Finite Elements On Nonstandard Meshes, Samuel Edward Reynolds

Dissertations and Theses

We present a finite element method for linear elliptic partial differential equations on bounded planar domains that are meshed with cells that are permitted to be curvilinear and multiply connected. We employ Poisson spaces, as used in virtual element methods, consisting of globally continuous functions that locally satisfy a Poisson problem with polynomial data. This dissertation presents four peer-reviewed articles concerning both the theory and computation of using such spaces in the context of finite elements. In the first paper, we propose a Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for harmonic functions by way of computing the trace of a harmonic conjugate by numerically …

Using The Motivated Information Management Theory And The Social Support Theory To Understand Caregiver Perspectives Of Currently Available Health Communication Regarding Dementia: A Qualitative Study, Sara J. Alig May 2024

Using The Motivated Information Management Theory And The Social Support Theory To Understand Caregiver Perspectives Of Currently Available Health Communication Regarding Dementia: A Qualitative Study, Sara J. Alig

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Dementia brings a cascade of changes into the life of not only the person facing it, but also the lives of the supporting family and caregivers. Dementia manifests with a gradual decline, or in some cases, a variably progressive decline in cognitive abilities. This decline requires the individual to rely more and more on caregivers. Caregiving necessitates the giving of oneself for another’s sake and oftentimes results in negative physical and social-emotional side effects. To navigate through the changes that are happening to their loved ones, as well as to themselves, caregivers need educational and social support. The purpose of …

A Basis For Removal Or Retention Of Black Folk Songs In Music Education According To Black Americans In The Music Community, Ashley Yarbrough May 2024

A Basis For Removal Or Retention Of Black Folk Songs In Music Education According To Black Americans In The Music Community, Ashley Yarbrough

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Despite the contribution of a large body of musical literature by Black Americans from the late nineteenth century forward, few musical contributions of Black American slaves have been properly attributed from the centuries prior, and many were credited to White Americans. In recent years, cultural sensitivities and misinterpretations toward the early music of Black Americans have created a movement to remove many of these songs from circulation and in particular, music education repertoire. In this study, the folk music created by Black Americans from the seventeenth through the nineteenth century was explored in order to determine the motivational factors according …
