Listener Biases Toward Chinese And Latino Instructor Accents: Their Impact On Subjective Evaluations And Objective Memory Measures, Ka Wai Lau
Student Theses and Dissertations
Many people in the United States speak with a non-native accent that reveals their racial identity. Accent bias and discrimination are prevalent issues in many social interactions, including academic and work environments. Past research has argued that foreign-accented speech is generally more difficult to process. The present study aimed to explore the impact of Chinese and Latino accents compared to standard American accents on subjective evaluations and objective memory in a classroom setting. Participants were asked to evaluate speaker competence, trustworthiness, and warmth in math and Western literature lessons and completed a memory test for them. I found that Chinese-accented …
Going Nuclear: Conflict Transformation In Asia, Hariharan Murugesan
Going Nuclear: Conflict Transformation In Asia, Hariharan Murugesan
Student Theses and Dissertations
On July 16th, 1945, codenamed “Trinity,” the world’s first nuclear bomb was detonated, releasing 18.6 kilotons of energy, morphing the sand in the Alamo Desert into green sheet glass.
International relations and its study were fundamentally changed with the creation of nuclear weapons. Mutually Assured Destruction, aptly shortened to MAD became a prevailing theory that tried to explain why countries would acquire nuclear weapons but would never use them; overtime, through various frameworks and treaties, the world tried to control the spread of nuclear weapons, and since 2006, only nine countries have succeeded in creating nuclear weapons, and yet interestingly …
Typological Reading Of The Apocalyptic Vision Of Daniel 7 And 9, Timothy Andrew Prince
Typological Reading Of The Apocalyptic Vision Of Daniel 7 And 9, Timothy Andrew Prince
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
Prince, Timothy A. “Typological Reading of the Apocalyptic Vision of Daniel 7 & 9.” Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2024. 311 pp.
As a response to Daniel’s prayer for the restoration of God’s city and sanctuary, “The Seventy Sevens” oracle of Dan 9:24–27 gives further details of the overarching apocalyptic vision of ch. 7. After establishing how the canonical apocalyptic visions of Daniel and Revelation constitute a unique genre that gives a teleological-eschatological-apocalyptic perspective, this study demonstrates how a typological reading of the text best perceives the revelation and interprets the message presented in Daniel’s apocalyptic vision. The vision and oracle …
Heat Transfer Techniques In Large-Scale Hydrogen Storage Using Metal Hydride Materials, Seth A. Thomas
Heat Transfer Techniques In Large-Scale Hydrogen Storage Using Metal Hydride Materials, Seth A. Thomas
Engineering
One of the methods being investigated for storing hydrogen is the use of metal hydride materials. Metal hydrides are able to absorb and release hydrogen, giving them a wide range of potential applications for hydrogen storage. These materials are generally considered to be safe, stable, reusable, and are able to store and release hydrogen at lower pressures and near ambient temperatures. Despite these benefits, there are still existing limitations that hinder their widespread applicability. One of the main issues presented is the necessity for effective heat removal during the absorption process. When hydrogen is being absorbed by the metal hydride …
An Intertaxon Dissimilarity For Level-1 Phylogenetic Networks From Rooted Triples, Noah Palmer
An Intertaxon Dissimilarity For Level-1 Phylogenetic Networks From Rooted Triples, Noah Palmer
Mathematics and Statistics
An important problem in evolutionary biology is how to infer the evolutionary history of a set of taxa in the presence of hybridization. In this work, we present an important first step in the establishment of an algorithm for the inference of a level-1 species network under the Network Multispecies Coalescent Model using rooted triples. In particular, we define a new intertaxon dissimilarity, dRT , which can be directly computed from the topology of the rooted triples displayed on a network, and might be estimated from data. In our main result we prove that this dissimilarity is equivalent to an …
Fire Management In The Face Of Rapid Climate Change: A Case Study Of The Yukon Flats Workshop, Abigail Hicks
Fire Management In The Face Of Rapid Climate Change: A Case Study Of The Yukon Flats Workshop, Abigail Hicks
Natural Resources
The management of wildfires in Alaska stands as a multifaceted social-ecological challenge without a singular, definitive solution. Due to the influence of climate change, wildfires have evolved in their behavioral patterns, prompting a reevaluation of the effectiveness of existing fire management strategies to accommodate the dynamic requirements of both ecosystems and stakeholders. During the COVID 19 pandemic in 2021, a virtual workshop entitled, "Improving Wildfire Management Decision-Making for the Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuge: A Workshop," brought together scientists and wildfire managers. This workshop facilitated collaborative discussions on some of the most pressing issues surrounding wildfire management plans for the …
Exploring Teacher Emotions In A University Esl Writing Classroom, Matt Ford
Exploring Teacher Emotions In A University Esl Writing Classroom, Matt Ford
Linguistics
Second language acquisition research has been steadily moving towards recognizing the importance of emotions as they relate to language teaching and learning. Indeed, the language classroom - especially in the context of English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction - is often an intensely emotional place for both teachers and students. This study explores the following question: As a university ESL teacher in a writing classroom, what emotions do I experience in the classroom, and what emotional work do I put in to address these emotions? Using autoethnographic methods in my own classroom, including reflexive journals, classroom observations, and student …
Lidar Observations Of Noctilucent Clouds And Their Temperatures Over Chatanika Alaska, Hannah M. Kerven
Lidar Observations Of Noctilucent Clouds And Their Temperatures Over Chatanika Alaska, Hannah M. Kerven
Physics
This thesis presents new observations of noctilucent clouds (NLCs), and their environment made with collocated Rayleigh and resonance lidars at Poker Flat Research Range (PFRR), Chatanika, Alaska (65°N, 147° W). In 2019, the Rayleigh Density Temperature Lidar (RDTL) at PFRR was extended to a three-channel system and employed for NLC measurements. RDTL yields measurements with signals a factor of 3-4 times higher than previous studies allowing measurements at higher resolution and to higher altitudes. This study is based on 14 observations in late July and early August between August 8, 2019, and August 11, 2022. NLCs were detected in 10 …

Rebirth: Investigating Industrial Gentrification And Land Use Policy In Chicago's West Loop, Nick Mcgowan
Rebirth: Investigating Industrial Gentrification And Land Use Policy In Chicago's West Loop, Nick Mcgowan
Library Map Prize
The West Loop has undergone a dramatic transformation in the last forty years, having re-developed from an impoverished and declining industrial area to Chicago’s fastest-growing real estate market, the city’s technology center, and a model mixed-use neighborhood. Focusing on the displacement of the area’s industrial base from the late 1980s to the current day, this thesis investigates the changing relationship between the City of Chicago, real estate developers, and local businesses and stakeholders to contend that this ongoing re-development process is a form of gentrification often overlooked in urbanist literature and within the narrative of its own transformation. The West …

Educating Pediatric Registered Nurses On The Administration Of Prolonged Intravenous Antibiotics, Kasandra Rezler
Master's Projects and Capstones
Abstract
Problem According to Children’s Hospital A's incident reporting system, 50% of problems related to prolonged intravenous antibiotics were classified as administration issues. When mistakes are made in this process, the antibiotic is then delivered at the wrong rate or the wrong time, which is problematic. Additionally, findings from a needs assessment survey highlight a critical need for targeted interventions, such as an educational video, to reduce administration errors associated with prolonged IV antibiotics. Context Within Children’s Hospital A, the microsystems targeted by this quality improvement project consist of inpatient pediatric patient care units (PCU) 300, 360, and 400. Children’s …

Navigating The Intersection Of Mckinney-Vento And Idea, Patricia A. Popp, Martha Crockett
Richmond Public Interest Law Review
Students with disabilities who are also experiencing homelessness face compounded challenges related to attending and participating in school. These children and youth are provided educational protection through two federal laws: the 2004 “Individuals with Disabilities Education Act” (IDEA) and the McKinney-Vento (MV) Education of Homeless Children and Youth (EHCY) program. It is the responsibility of educators, school personnel, and families to carefully navigate the dual mandates in order to ensure equitable educational opportunities, while also meeting the unique needs of each student. The purpose of this article is to offer a foundation for understanding the intersection of the two laws …

504 Plans, School Gender Policy, And Gender Dysphoria: How The Case Of Kesha T. Williams May Change Education Policy, Clifford Clapp
Richmond Public Interest Law Review
Gender dysphoria affects transgender people at significantly higher rates than other populations. In the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit case of Kesha T. Williams v. Stacey A. Kincaid, et al., 45 F.4th 759 (4th Cir. 2022), the Court found that the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office, in denying Ms. Williams’ hormone replacement therapy for her gender dysphoria, had violated her right to equal treatment under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The Court generally found that, despite the ADA being written with animus toward transgender people, even under that language, gender dysphoria was not excluded from protection …
Breaking Barriers: Examining The Impact Of Special Education Services On Juvenile Justice Involvement, Madison Neale
Breaking Barriers: Examining The Impact Of Special Education Services On Juvenile Justice Involvement, Madison Neale
Richmond Public Interest Law Review
The following article is an exploration of the intersection between special education—namely, the long-repudiated practice of removing children with moderate disabilities from general education classrooms and placing them into “self-contained” classrooms away from their peers—and the involvement of those children in the criminal legal system. The article analyzes the parallels between the “othering” effect of segregating children with disabilities in schools, and the eventual segregation from their communities that they face in juvenile detention facilities. In a juvenile justice system where a disproportionate number of its children have been diagnosed with some form of intellectual or behavioral disability, this article …

Learning Proximal Operators With Gaussian Process And Adaptive Quantization In Distributed Optimization, Aldo Duarte Vera Tudela
Learning Proximal Operators With Gaussian Process And Adaptive Quantization In Distributed Optimization, Aldo Duarte Vera Tudela
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In networks consisting of agents communicating with a central coordinator and working together to solve a global optimization problem in a distributed manner, the agents are often required to solve private proximal minimization subproblems. Such a setting often requires a further decomposition method to solve the global distributed problem, resulting in extensive communication overhead. In networks where communication is expensive, it is crucial to reduce the communication overhead of the distributed optimization scheme. Integrating Gaussian processes (GP) as a learning component to the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) has proven effective in learning each agent's local proximal operator to …

College Honors Program
Video games have grown in popularity and relevance in global significance since the mid 1980’s, proliferating into a cosmopolitan art medium occupied by European, American, and Japanese companies exchanging and navigating their cultural differences. Within this globalized art form, elements of Greco-Roman society have become prevalent. Many facets of Classics can be found in games, including historic figures, ancient texts, and allusions to Roman society. The Latin language in particular is commonly found in video game music in a variety of game genres. This paper discusses the use of the Latin language in video game soundtracks in order to understand …

Investigating The Connectedness Of A Gorbonos Insect Swarm, Brendan Perez
Investigating The Connectedness Of A Gorbonos Insect Swarm, Brendan Perez
Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement
Insect swarms exhibit collective behaviors that emerge from the interactions between individual insects. In midges, these interactions are thought to be governed by long-range acoustic signals from other insects in the swarm. A model developed by Gorbonos et al. adds the long-range acoustic behavior into an equation of motion to describe the midge swarm dynamics. This research expands on Gorbonos' model by considering various subsets of insect-insect interactions, and investigates how diffusion and polarization parameters vary with the number of interactions.

Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement
Limited research has evaluated comments' effects on social media posts. Prior investigations have narrowly focused on negative body image measures after viewing idealized bodies. We extended this work to examine the impact of non-ideal images among 557 cis-gender women and 49 gender-diverse individuals (MAge=23.49). Participants were randomly assigned to one of eight conditions in the 2 (time:pre/post) X 2 (image: deal/non-ideal) X 4 (comment:no comment, reinforcing, challenging, reinforcing+challenging comment) mixed-model design. After completing pre-test measures, participants viewed 13 Instagram-like images standardized in a pilot study to be similar in age, attractiveness, and photo quality, but differing in body shape/size. Comments …

Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement
Carbon-carbon bonding is considered one of the most important chemical reaction classes in organic chemistry. The goal of this project is to perform a new carbon-carbon coupling reaction using copper to catalyze a radical boron reaction to form an sp3–sp3 C-C bond. Boron has been used in the past to form C-C bonds. What is novel about this research is the geometry of the two carbon atoms being joined. Two sp2 carbon coupling from boron reagents has been achieved beforeand one group was able to couple an sp2 carbon and an sp3 carbon. This experiment …

Gaba And Lactate Preconditioning Increases Cell Division In Annual Killifish Cell Line During Anoxia, Devan Duey, Chelsea Hughes, Riley Roth-Carter, Daniel Zajic, Jason Podrabsky
Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement
Annual killifish (Austrofundulus limnaeus) live in temporary ponds in Venezuela and experience drastic changes in their environment that cause their ponds to dry up. This species survives by producing drought- and anoxia-tolerant embryos that are deposited in the mud. Embryos survive these conditions by entering metabolic dormancy (diapause) until environmental signals break their dormancy and they continue developing. In order to survive anoxia, embryos rely exclusively on anaerobic metabolism, which leads to abundant lactate accumulation. Previous research has shown that the production and degradation of the neurotransmitter γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is crucial for long-term anoxia survival. This study …
