This was a presentation at the June 2026 Boston Library Consortium at Connecticut College.

UMB Healey Librarians Lydia Burrage-Goodwin and Christine Moynihan talk about what experiences they have had with faculty using OER and AI, which led them to develop ethics guidelines to support librarians who work with faculty authors. Attendees learned about creating AI use statements for OERs, using AI transparency logos, and applying open licenses to fully AI generated content as well as OER adaptations.

Effective demand forecasting has become crucial to strengthening system resilience, reducing food waste, and achieving sustainability in food systems. Despite recent advances in leveraging machine learning for food demand forecasting, most existing models remain static and assume stable demand patterns, posing a challenge for adapting to demand changes during disruption events. This paper develops a proactive approach that leverages demand forecasting outputs and weather disruption flags to guide inventory replenishment, ensuring adaptability to varying demand conditions across three weather disruption events while reducing waste. In today's fast-paced global economy, born-global SMEs must rapidly develop strategic capabilities to compete on the international stage. Understanding how these firms cultivate entrepreneurial behavior across borders is critical for sustaining competitive advantage. However, limited research has systematically examined the mechanisms and boundary conditions through which strategic intent translates into international entrepreneurial outcomes, particularly in developing economy contexts such as Pakistan. Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have transformed AI systems into increasingly interactive and relational agents, raising questions about the consequences of the perceived sense of intimacy and reciprocity formed with AI systems. The present systematic review synthesised empirical evidence on the benefits and risks of AI parasocial relationships across diverse AI agents and contexts. Following PRISMA guidelines, 39 empirical records were identified and analysed using narrative thematic analysis. Through this, five key benefits of AI parasocial relationships were identified, namely personal development and adaptive functioning, emotional support, social needs fulfilment, enjoyment and entertainment, and community participation and social belonging. When modeling two-dimensional axisymmetric accretion disks around Kerr black holes, setting the azimuthal terms of the MHD equations to zero causes the loss of turbulence and dynamo effects. In this paper, we use three-dimensional models to identify the turbulence that arises from azimuthal flux derivatives (AFDs) and create probability density functions to characterize them. We establish a pipeline for calculating the AFDs, creating a distribution, and normalizing it. Then, we plot the dependence of the conditional probability of the AFDs on density, magnetic field strength, and velocity for the continuity and magnetic induction equations. This thesis examines the relationship between business owners and individuals experiencing homelessness within urban commercial districts in the United States, arguing that the dynamic is shaped primarily by spatial concentration, uneven power structures, economic pressure, and public framing rather than simple conflict between competing interests. Drawing on stakeholder analysis, business perception surveys, a mixed-methods study, and an original content analysis of 50 news articles spanning 23 states, this thesis identifies a consistent pattern: business owners broadly perceive homeless presence as negatively impacting safety, cleanliness, and consumer behavior. Local news media reinforces those perceptions through predominantly negative framing of homeless individuals. …

This thesis studies three complexity measures of total Boolean functions f:{0,1}ⁿ → {0,1}: maximum sensitivity s(f), polynomial degree deg(f), and spectral sensitivity λ(f), where λ(f) is defined as the spectral norm of the adjacency matrix of the sensitivity graph. Building on the results of Aaronson et al., we examine the inequality chain √s(f) ≤ λ(f) ≤ deg(f) and investigate whether all three quantities can be simultaneously equal.

Scholars have noted that social work in the United States is particularly dependent on, and tied to, the government. While frameworks that are popular in the U.S. explicitly provide social support, they also implicitly maintain social order. Thus, social work in the U.S. may provide immediate, short-term relief, but as a result of government-imposed limitations, dominant social work frameworks do not work towards the ultimate liberation of humanity. This thesis reviews the mechanical engineering capstone project that designed a winch proximity sensor for WARN Industries. WARN is very interested in developing this product for market as a safety and ease-of-use accessory, and working with Portland State University was the first step in this process. A group of four mechanical engineering and four electrical engineering capstone students collaborated to research sensor types, test the selected methods, and design and build a prototype. Exploring The Durability Of Marine Picocyanobacterial Microcolonies, Erik Swanson

Picocyanobacteria of the genus Synechococcus are widespread aquatic photoautotrophs that play essential roles in primary production and carbon cycling. Some Synechococcus strains form multicellular microcolonies, but the mechanisms of cell-to-cell attachments and structural durability of these microcolonies remain poorly understood. This research investigated the physical durability of microcolonies in two marine Synechococcus strains (CC9605 and CC9311) using physical disruption treatments. Cultures were subjected to vortexing and sonication treatments, and populations of single cells and microcolonies were quantified using flow cytometry based on differences in measures of size. Results indicated that strain CC9605 showed no significant treatment effect, whereas CC9311 displayed …

Traditional LGBTQ+ mental health frameworks often conceptualize psychological safety as a matter of individual endurance. This paper critiques this focus on adaptive resilience, which systematically shifts responsibility from institutions to individuals. To counter this, the study introduces "Psychological Architecture," a framework viewing social environments as constructed infrastructures that can either support or undermine queer well-being. The model contrasts performative "Glasshouses," which prioritize visibility over safety, with engineered "Greenhouses" that nurture sustainable safety through three sequential pillars: Authentic Representation (walls), Emotional Validation (insulation), and Vocal Activism (ventilation).

Not Everyone Gets A Tree: Housing Values, Street Trees, And Equity In Portland, Matthew Moller

Street trees are positively associated with Portland home sale prices, but exposure and capitalization are uneven by race/ethnic neighborhood context. Urban trees are ecological assets, but their economic and equity implications remain uneven. This thesis examines street-tree exposure and 2023 residential sale prices in Portland, Oregon (n = 6,414) using a mixed-methodology hedonic design. Ordinary least squares models measure inventoried street-tree counts within 20m, 50m, and 100m buffers together with structural controls and census-block racial and ethnic context. Trees are positively and significantly associated with logged prices at all radii, with scale-sensitive magnitudes and modestly better fit as wider buffers. …

This qualitative dissertation examined how caregivers of students with low-incidence disabilities experienced and interpreted school support within the context of daily family life. Grounded in the social model of disability, the study was designed to explore the nature of meaningful school-based support, the limitations caregivers encountered, and the ways school-family relationships shaped these experiences over time. Mathematics proficiency has remained a persistent national challenge, with many students failing to meet grade-level expectations. This mixed-methods program evaluation examined the effectiveness of mathematics intervention strategies within Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) for students in Grades 3–8. Guided by utilization-focused evaluation, the study explored educator perceptions, implementation practices, and system-level challenges. Quantitative data were collected through an anonymous survey (n = 19), and qualitative data were obtained from one semi-structured interview. This study examines the impact of Skyhawks Sports Academy camps on youth participants’ social-emotional learning (SEL) competencies using an intrinsic case study approach incorporating both quantitative and qualitative methods. Quantitative data were gathered through SEL competency surveys and observations of coaches and qualitative data through semi-structured interviews with past and current Skyhawks coaches. A paired samples t-test analysis of the quantitative data revealed statistically significant changes in three SEL competencies: social awareness and self-management showed growth, while relationship skills declined. This study explored how a multicomponent health promotion program for pre-adolescent girls could be adapted to support positive youth development across diverse cultural and community contexts. In summer 2022, trained research staff conducted six focus groups with 27 girls from urban and rural communities in the Midwestern United States. Participants reviewed the original program curriculum and provided feedback on program activities, structure, relationships, and implementation strategies. Sessions were audio recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed thematically using qualitative software and manual review. This article presents the results of an applied experimental study aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of a transmedia storytelling approach in increasing youth understanding and awareness of gender equality, disability, and social inclusion (GEDSI) issues. The study involved 198 young people aged 17–25 years who were randomly divided into control and experimental groups, with a pre- and post-test design to measure changes in attitudes and understanding. The intervention was done to the experimental group through a series of participatory activities: transmedia storytelling modules, quizzes, participatory games, and focus group discussion. Research has established positive relationships and trust as cornerstones for successful youth-adult partnerships (YAPs), yet limited work addresses how to sustain struggling partnerships, particularly in low-trust environments. Using an explanatory, sequential mixed-methods design, this study first quantitatively affirmed the importance of strong teacher-student relationships as precursors for the formation of classroom YAPs (known here as Student Voice Partnerships or SVPs). Subsequent qualitative data explains that youth define these relationships through the lens of trust, actively assessing adults to determine their trustworthiness—a process aligning with concepts of discernment and calculation. Afterschool programs can bridge opportunity gaps by providing children with venues for learning and cultivating socioemotional skills. This paper examines the relationship between attendance in afterschool programs in a Vermont school district and two academic outcomes (the Scholastic Reading Inventory/SRI and the EasyCMB math test) using cross-sectional data from Spring 2018. Using multivariate regression analysis, this study found a positive association between afterschool program attendance and academic achievement on these tests. Moreover, the findings indicate the persistence of socioeconomic academic disparities. To identify whether and how contextual (i.e., spiritual, educational, and cultural contexts) and relational (i.e., physical and psychological caregiving) resilience influence high school completion among Black young adults, the team conducted logistic regression and moderation analyses. The interaction between contextual resilience and relational resilience revealed that at higher levels of relational resilience, increased contextual resilience is associated with an increased likelihood of high school completion. Importantly, the findings also suggest that at lower levels of relational resilience, increased contextual resilience is associated with a decreased likelihood of high school completion among Black young adults.
