Prosocial Behavior, Sean Fernando, Claire Leach, Danielle Haake, Debra Bigelow-Davis, Jillian Stokes, Aj Kalawai'a, Nore Heinitz, Grace Bates

Psychology Student Publications

Prosocial behavior is a widely researched area of social psychology. It can be defined as the voluntary actions performed with the goal of benefiting others. This concept of helping others includes a wide range of actions, from simple acts such as holding the door open for someone to larger acts like donating money to charity (Peetz & Howard, 2022). This chapter will explore the topic of prosocial behavior by identifying the main types of prosocial behavior and the measure used to assess them, explaining the motivation behind prosocial behavior, and discussing various benefits and counterarguments to prosocial behavior.

Effects Of Functional Fatigue Protocol And Visual Information On Postural Control In Patients With Chronic Ankle Instability, Kyungeon Kim, Hyunsoo Kim, Kyeongtak Song, Suji Yoon, Eun Ji Hong, Hyung Gyu Jeon, Kyoung Uk Oh, Sae Yong Lee

Kinesiology Faculty Publications

Chronic ankle instability (CAI) patients often exhibit postural control deficits and rely on visual information to maintain static balance to compensate for decreased proprioception. Fatigue impairs neuromuscular control, in addition to postural control, in CAI patients. However, whether functional fatiguing exercises alter postural control and sensory organization strategies during single-leg balance tests in CAI patients remains unclear. This study involved a controlled trial on 28 CAI patients in a laboratory setting. Each participant performed a single-leg balance test with eyes open (EO) and eyes closed (EC) before and after a functional fatigue protocol. Two-way repeated-measures ANOVA evaluated fatigue (pre- vs. …

The Social Justice Educational Assessment Scale: Filling A Gap In Social Justice Education Assessment And Evaluation, Jennifer R. Banas, Sarah Gershon

Health Sciences and Physical Education Faculty Publications

Nationally recognized social justice standards guide educators in developing social justice education. Absent from the guidance are tools to conduct initial formative assessment or to measure the impact of related instruction. To fill that gap, an academic researcher and 10th-grade teacher used a 3-phased, 9-step process to develop, pilot test, and evaluate a self-assessment tool called the Social Justice Educational Assessment Scale (SJEAS). In Phase 1, the team created the SJEAS items, aligning each with the Learning for Justice 9th–12th-grade social justice learning outcomes to ensure content validity. In Phase 2, they pretested the questions, revised the scale, and administered …

Hulley Enterprises Ltd. v. Russian Federation

On Appeal from the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia No. 1:14-cv-01996-BAH, Hon. Beryl A. Howell

From the Introduction and Summary of Argument

This appeal seeks to re-litigate a question that the Russian Federation had already lost with finality in the courts of the seat of arbitration (the Netherlands): namely, whether the Russian Federation ever agreed to arbitrate in the first place. Those arguments are identical to arguments the Russian Federation presented to Dutch courts more than six years ago in a failed effort to set aside the awards. Because …

Exploring 2d X-Ray Diffraction Phase Fraction Analysis With Convolutional Neural Networks: Insights From Kinematic-Diffraction Simulations, Weiqi Yue, Mohommad Redad Mehdi, Pawan K. Tripathi, Matthew A. Willard, Frank Ernst, Roger H. French

Faculty Scholarship

Deep-learning models are effective for analyzing the complex information in 2D X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns. Accurately collecting parameters of the material sample is crucial during model training, significantly impacting model performance. In this study, we employ a kinematic-diffraction simulator to generate simulated 2D XRD patterns for Ti–6Al–4V alloy, allowing precise control of sample parameters. These simulated patterns are used to train convolutional neural networks, predicting β-phase volume fractions. The training data set consists exclusively of 2D XRD patterns with pure α- or pure β-phase, while the testing set incorporates patterns with intermediate phase volume fraction. In particular, we investigate how …

Dynamic Cbct Imaging Using Prior Model-Free Spatiotemporal Implicit Neural Representation (Pmf-Stinr), Hua-Chieh Shao, Tielige Mengke, Tinsu Pan, You Zhang

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Objective. Dynamic cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) can capture high-spatial-resolution, time-varying images for motion monitoring, patient setup, and adaptive planning of radiotherapy. However, dynamic CBCT reconstruction is an extremely ill-posed spatiotemporal inverse problem, as each CBCT volume in the dynamic sequence is only captured by one or a few x-ray projections, due to the slow gantry rotation speed and the fast anatomical motion (e.g. breathing).Approach. We developed a machine learning-based technique, prior-model-free spatiotemporal implicit neural representation (PMF-STINR), to reconstruct dynamic CBCTs from sequentially acquired x-ray projections. PMF-STINR employs a joint image reconstruction and registration approach to address the …

Functionalized Gold Nanoparticles And Halogen Bonding Interactions Involving Fentanyl And Fentanyl Derivatives, Molly M. Sherard, Jamie S. Kaplan, Jeffrey H. Simpson, Kevin W. Kittredge, Michael C. Leopold

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Fentanyl (FTN) and synthetic analogs of FTN continue to ravage populations across the globe, including in the United States where opioids are increasingly being used and abused and are causing a staggering and growing number of overdose deaths each year. This growing pandemic is worsened by the ease with which FTN can be derivatized into numerous derivatives. Understanding the chemical properties/behaviors of the FTN class of compounds is critical for developing effective chemical detection schemes using nanoparticles (NPs) to optimize important chemical interactions. Halogen bonding (XB) is an intermolecular interaction between a polarized halogen atom on a molecule and e−-rich …

Michigan Tech Publications

Nonheme Fe(II) and 2-oxoglutarate (2OG)-dependent histone lysine demethylases 2A (KDM2A) catalyze the demethylation of the mono- or dimethylated lysine 36 residue in the histone H3 peptide (H3K36me1/me2), which plays a crucial role in epigenetic regulation and can be involved in many cancers. Although the overall catalytic mechanism of KDMs has been studied, how KDM2 catalysis takes place in contrast to other KDMs remains unknown. Understanding such differences is vital for enzyme redesign and can help in enzyme-selective drug design. Herein, we employed molecular dynamics (MD) and combined quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) to explore the complete catalytic mechanism of KDM2A, including …

School of Graduate Studies Faculty Publications

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) accounts for more than 90% of all pancreatic cancers and is the most fatal of all cancers. The treatment response from combination chemotherapies is far from satisfactory and surgery remains the mainstay of curative strategies. These challenges warrant identifying effective treatments for combating this deadly cancer. PDAC tumor progression is associated with the robust activation of the coagulation system. Notably, cancer-associated thrombosis (CAT) is a significant risk factor in PDAC. CAT is a concept whereby cancer cells promote thromboembolism, primarily venous thromboembolism (VTE). Of all cancer types, PDAC is associated with the highest risk of developing …

Beyond Vertigo: Vestibular, Aural, And Perceptual Symptoms In Vestibular Migraine, Claire E.J. Ceriani

Department of Jefferson Headache Center Papers and Presentations

PURPOSE: To review the vestibular, aural, and perceptual symptoms of vestibular migraine (VM) that may present alongside vertigo.

RECENT FINDINGS: Increased research attention to the wide spectrum of symptoms presenting in VM patients has improved understanding of this disorder, with recent identification of five different VM phenotypes. Research into the clinical overlap between VM and other chronic vestibular syndromes such as persistent postural-perceptual dizziness and mal-de-debarquement syndrome reveals a range of vestibular symptoms and hints at pathophysiological connections between migraine and vestibular dysfunction. Studies of migraine treatment for hearing loss suggest patients presenting with aural symptoms may have an underlying …

The record of past human adaptations provides crucial lessons for guiding responses to crises in the future1–3. To date, there have been no systematic global comparisons of humans’ ability to absorb and recover from disturbances through time4,5. Here we synthesized resilience across a broad sample of prehistoric population time–frequency data, spanning 30,000 years of human history. Cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses of population decline show that frequent disturbances enhance a population’s capacity to resist and recover from later downturns. Land-use patterns are important mediators of the strength of this positive association: farming and herding societies are more …

Engaging Students In Partial Differential Equations Through Modeling Fourier's Law Of Conduction, Justin G. Trulen, Kayla Keller, John Sinclair, Lauren Meagher

CODEE Journal

In an effort to make active learning exercises in a partial differential equations course, we present a student activity modeling Fourier's law of conduction under the framework of the heat equation. An overview of the heat equation, including several avenues of study, is provided. Then we give an intuitive way of constructing the heat equation from a couple of fundamental properties of physics including Fourier's law of conduction. We outline an experiment that can be run to collect their own data to model Fourier's law of conduction as well as provide data we collected. We conclude with a student activity …

Investigating The Behavior Of Ternary Nbvzr Alloy And The Effect Of Zr Addition On The Mechanical And Microstructural Properties, Caelyn Walton-Macaulay

Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study

This study investigates the microstructural and compositional evolution of a ternary NbVZr alloy under varying Zr concentrations, utilizing scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis. Results show consistent overall composition across different Zr concentrations, with observable Zr-enriched regions decreasing in frequency with increasing Zr content, potentially due to destabilization effects. Microstructural analysis reveals an increase in the area fraction occupied by dendrites as Zr content increases, prompting a decrease in the interdendritic phase. A comparison with an active concurrent work on the deposition of Nb to the ternary alloy highlights similarities and differences in phase distribution …

The ATPase family AAA+ domain containing 2 (ATAD2) protein and its paralog ATAD2B have a C-terminal bromodomain (BRD) that functions as a reader of acetylated lysine residues on histone proteins. Using a structure–function approach, we investigated the ability of the ATAD2/B BRDs to select acetylated lysine among multiple histone post-translational modifications. The ATAD2B BRD can bind acetylated histone ligands that also contain adjacent methylation or phosphorylation marks, while the presence of these modifications significantly weakened the acetyllysine binding activity of the ATAD2 BRD. Our structural studies provide mechanistic insights into how ATAD2/B BRD-binding pocket residues coordinate the acetyllysine group in …
