Sanford School of Medicine Posters and Presentations

The purpose of this study was to analyze the lecture materials provided in medical schools through a diversity lens. Skin pathologies manifest distinctively on various shades of skin and physicians must be equipped with the proper knowledge to identify and diagnose these conditions accurately and promptly. For most medical students, images in prominent textbooks and lecture slides are their first encounter with disease presentations. Therefore, it is important to analyze the diversity of skin tones in the content that is being delivered. Specifically, the use of images featuring darker skin tones compared to those depicting lighter skin tones. This study …

Military Veteran Students’ Perceptions Of Support In College Writing Classrooms: A Qualitative Case Study, Jacqueline M. Beamen May 2024

Military Veteran Students’ Perceptions Of Support In College Writing Classrooms: A Qualitative Case Study, Jacqueline M. Beamen

Theses and Dissertations

Current literature indicates a disconnect between military veteran students’ experiences in college and what colleges claim they are doing to support these students. How support is manifested in writing classes at a medium-sized community college, as perceived by veteran students themselves, was unknown. This qualitative case study aimed to establish a deeper understanding of the unique needs of these students and how and whether they experienced support in their community college writing classrooms. The findings of this study showed that the participants’ military experiences impacted their perceptions of the college and of their writing classes. While they valued structure, rigor, …

The Long Shadow Of Food Lion, Knight First Amend. Inst. (May 31, 2024), Alan K. Chen

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

This essay discusses the continuing shadow of Food Lion, Inc. v. Capital Cities/ABC, Inc., which looms over the efforts of journalists and, increasingly of other citizens, to engage in undercover investigations to discover and disseminate truthful information on matters of profound public concern. At a time when many impediments to freedom of the press have emerged, legal barriers to undercover investigations suppress a key newsgathering tool that was once an important part of the news media ecosystem. After describing the extensive litigation battle in the case, the essay argues that the decision continues to cast a chilling effect over journalists …

An Inaugural Forum On Epidemiological Modeling For Public Health Stakeholders In Arizona, Joseph R. Mihalijevic, Carmenlita Chief, Mehreen Malik, Kayode Oshinubi, Eck Doerry, Esma Gel, Crystal Hepp, Tim Lant, Sanjay Mehrotra, Samantha Sabo

Department of Supply Chain Management and Analytics: Faculty Publications

Epidemiological models—which help us understand and forecast the spread of infectious disease—can be valuable tools for public health. However, barriers exist that can make it difficult to employ epidemiological models routinely within the repertoire of public health planning. These barriers include technical challenges associated with constructing the models, challenges in obtaining appropriate data for model parameterization, and problems with clear communication of modeling outputs and uncertainty. To learn about the unique barriers and opportunities within the state of Arizona, we gathered a diverse set of 48 public health stakeholders for a day-and-a-half forum. Our research group was motivated specifically by …

Perceived And Preferred Methods To Adult Language Learning, Suzie Tse May 2024

Perceived And Preferred Methods To Adult Language Learning, Suzie Tse

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research study is to understand the adult language learners in formal learning setting and know what do they perceive as the main methods of teaching and what do they prefer instead. If there is a gap between preferred methods of learning and perceived methods of learning, then there is a need that needs to be addressed. This is important because many students find language learning at best ineffective and at worst impossible. I hypothesize that there will be a difference between adult student perception and preference because student focuses more on speaking and listening skill over …

Building Agency Through Sensemaking: The Transformational Journey And Identity Development Process Of Working Mother Leaders During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Lynn Levis

Dissertations

Working mothers in America have long juggled a multitude of responsibilities while navigating several systemic barriers in the very society that claims to support them. The COVID-19 pandemic had an outsized impact on mothers when children were sent home from daycares and schools to reduce the spread of the virus. This study sought to address an important gap in the literature by using a mixed methods constructivist grounded theory approach to examine how working mothers in leadership positions navigated their various roles and systems during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data collection consisted of a survey with 105 respondents, followed by individual, …

Applying Scalability To Meet Word Count Requirements In Written Assessments, Carl Evans, Paul Harrington May 2024

Applying Scalability To Meet Word Count Requirements In Written Assessments, Carl Evans, Paul Harrington

Plymouth Business School

Using the concept “scalability,” the authors examine the difficulties university students face meeting word count requirements in assessments and explore the approaches students use to address this challenge. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with students on a Business Management degree at a UK university. It was found that students gain experience of producing large word count assignments in a variety of ways, but miss opportunities to benefit from scalability to increase output more efficiently. Indicators of where teaching staff might support students more fully emerge from the study. This study provides an original focus by considering scalability as an approach adopted …

Biased Representation Of Digital Feminist Activism: A Critical Look At Cyberfeminism, Muria Endah Sokowati, Sitti Amar Azizyah Puthe Taliu

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

The development of technology facilitated by computer networks creates ambiguity over women’s empowerment. On the one hand, the intersection of technology and women’s freedom of expression has led to the emergence of cyberfeminism. The participatory culture encourages the growth of feminist movements to facilitate public engagement and empowerment. However, several overlooked challenges persist in the representation of women’s concerns. Consequently, we undertook this study to offer critique and contemplation on digital feminist activity. This study presents a contradictory perspective, providing a counterbalance and an alternative narrative to the prevailing emphasis of previous research on the glorification of cyberfeminism and activism …

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

Filipino family dynamics and culture may influence how traditional values like “utang na loob” (debt of gratitude) are understood across time. The purpose of the study is to understand the concept of utang na loob in the Southern Philippines from the perspective of working panganays (eldest children). The research investigated the narratives of the eldest child in the Filipino family regarding their experiences with utang na loob. It employed Murray’s three levels of narrative analysis as a framework and elicited themes on personal, positional, and ideological levels. Results revealed personal experiences of early maturity and filial pressure, gratitude, and fulfillment, …

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

Excerpt: Fr. Frank Xavier Lynch, S.J. was an anthropologist and a pioneering figure in Philippine social sciences during the twentieth century, emphasizing the centrality of Philippine values in understanding local social structures (Sicat 1978; Advincula-Lopez 2023, 109; Philippine Social Science Council 1978). This is reflected in Lynch’s seminal 1749 work “Ang mga Aswang: A Bicol Belief,” the first analytical work on the aswang belief, a native supernatural belief in the Philippines (Ramos 1971, x). His work documents beliefs and practices related to the aswang, establishing it as a generic term for a profane being possessing supernatural powers emanating from pacts …

Morphometric Analysis And Taxonomic Re-Evaluation Of Pepsis Cerberus Lucas And P. Elegans Lepeletier (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae: Pepsinae: Pepsini), Frank E. Kurczewski, Akira Shimizu, Diane H. Kiernan May 2024

Morphometric Analysis And Taxonomic Re-Evaluation Of Pepsis Cerberus Lucas And P. Elegans Lepeletier (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae: Pepsinae: Pepsini), Frank E. Kurczewski, Akira Shimizu, Diane H. Kiernan

Insecta Mundi

Hurd (1952) separated Pepsis cerberus Lucas from P. elegans Lepeletier (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae: Pepsinae: Pepsini) based on external morphology and biogeography. Vardy (2005) synonymized the familiar and historically well-documented P. cerberus and P. elegans, combining these Nearctic taxa with several Neotropical variants in an extremely broad definition of P. menechma Lepeletier. In doing so, Vardy (2005) breached the principle of nomenclatural stability. He ignored the prevailing usage and clearly violated articles 23.2, 23.3 and 23.9.1.2 of the ICZN (1999). Morphological differences, ecological divergence, and narrow sympatric geographic distribution of P. cerberus and P. elegans …

Insecta Mundi

A clearwing moth species, Paranthrene sogaardi Taft and Smith, 2024, new species, is described from Michigan and Minnesota. The recognition of this new species is based on a phylogeny estimated from mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I and wingless DNA sequences of 25 specimens representing all Paranthrene Hübner species including individuals from various locations. Paranthrene sogaardi new species was monophyletic and differed from Paranthrene tabaniformis Rottenburg, 1775 by a mean of 7.6% COI pairwise “p” distance, coloration, and genitalic morphology.

Taxonomic Notes On Velvet Ants Of The Genus Timulla Ashmead, 1899 (Hymenoptera: Mutillidae) In The United States Of America And Canada, George C. Waldren

Insecta Mundi

The exclusively New World velvet ant genus Timulla Ashmead, 1899 (Hymenoptera: Mutillidae: Mutillinae: Trogaspidiini) contains 180 species and ten subspecies. Most of these species are known from a single sex, and the validity of the subspecies has not been evaluated since their original description in 1937 and 1938. The Timulla fauna of the United States of America includes thirty species and eight subspecies, and the fauna of Canada includes three species. The faunas of these two countries were critically studied with the following results. Out of the eight total subspecies, seven were found to be structurally identical to and sympatric …

Internet-Based Data Platforms Re-Define The Distributions Of Some Large Crabronid Wasps In Arkansas (Hymenoptera: Crabronidae), David E. Bowles

Insecta Mundi

The geographic distributions of three large wasps, Sphecius speciosus (Drury), Stictia carolina Fabricius, and Stizus brevipennis Walsh (Hymenoptera: Crabronidae), occurring in Arkansas are defined using museum specimens and three internet-based data platforms. The internet-based data platforms generally provided more county location records than museum records. Using data from internet sources for easily identified species can better serve to illustrate the known distributions for some species thus making for a powerful tool elucidating distributional patterns and conservation planning.

Identifying Barriers To Sustainability Of Dual Language Immersion Programs In Utah Schools, Jennifer Leigh Rowley

Theses and Dissertations

Dual Language Immersion (DLI) educational programming began in Utah in 2008. Within three short years, DLI programs in Utah schools had grown from 5 to 58 programs statewide. Presently, Utah now has over 301 DLI programs, including instruction in Spanish, Chinese, French, Portuguese, Russian, and German. DLI programs have many benefits and have attracted many student families. However, not much research has been done on program planning, implementation, and the sustainability of DLI programs within individual school cultures and climates. This study will examine the satisfaction level of faculty, staff, administrators, and parents at DLI schools (including how supported/understood each …
